LEEDS, CONNECTING THE LANDSCAPE TO THE CITY

Leeds The proposal is to connect areas of urban disuse and urban poverty, in the case of large unsightly housing tower blocks, and to rehouse those low income families into better low and medium income homes. These homes encourage through their quality, a care in their upkeep and a connection between different income groups. The connection between the classes, may help to bring up this area of Leeds. The towers blocks made from grey white concrete are an eye-saw to the entering skyline of a thriving and economic city. The jump in removing these and dispersing the inhabitants will hopefully create the desired effect of revitalizing the area. The area is connected by main roads and a green network, that largely comprises of golf courses and to the outskirts of the city agriculture and natural land. The site is at the major connection between the city and its surroundings and the area needs the care and development that the wrest of the city has had over the past few years.

Existing Buildings This page looks at the areas of the existing site that should be kept, on the top, and the ones on the bottom are the alteration areas. The first on top is the school and grounds and need which need to be retained as they are, slightly altering pathways. The second is part of the hospital and the Thackray medical museum.

2

The areas to redevelop include large towers, city housing, factories and underutilized open spaces.

Strategy The Strategy is to connect the City Centre to the housing areas in the North. This connection already exists but rigidifying needs to be implemented. The green connections need to connect between the good green areas in the site, which provide a band of green, and the green areas to the East and the Cemetery to the North.

Short Path Finding These pages look at the mesh form taken from the important transport nodes. These nodes are given a hierarchy to denote their condition of travel, weather it be walking, driving or cycling. These are then run with a shortest walk technique and then bundled, to find the most efficient way to get from one area to another. These have been created using the existing road layout so as to minimize displacement. These are then neatened up and given their hierarchy as seen in the page opposite.

Option 1: Block Masterplan This masterplan looks at the use of the shortest walk to maximize connectivity, whilst also defining the block layout. The short walk is based on a grid, where the shortest route defines the path through. The crossing point of paths denotes the area of a plaza, and the orientation denotes whether it is largely open space or private space.

LEEDS, CONNECTING THE LANDSCAPE TO THE CITY

Typology 1

This Typology looks at the relationship with the ground and how large amounts of green areas effect the cell, this would be a high value area.

18

Typology 2

This Typology looks at a merging of cells to maximize the amount of floor space to open space, this means that this area is slightly less expensive than the other areas allowing for a mix of classes.

LEEDS, CONNECTING THE LANDSCAPE TO THE CITY

Typology 3

This Typology looks at cross shaped buildings and there maximization of outdoor space, which also maximizes the light, this however comes with the drawback of views into other buildings and a lack of floor space adding to the cost of the buildings.

LEEDS, CONNECTING THE LANDSCAPE TO THE CITY

Details This page looks at the relationship within one cell and to the surroundings. There are elements that affect all of the cells and some that affect only a few. This cell looks at the relationship between open space, built land and circulation, in a way that minimises time spent in walking transit. The minimum walking transit on a certain route would be through the cells, but the paths that fall around offer an alternate route. The glass blocks offer both light and a clear circulation route whilst adding a less heavy element to the design.

26

Workings This Drawing shows how the areas that would be circulation form glass blocks that allows for the gental flow of light into the buildings like glass boulevards. The open green space and private gardens take over the two green areas and sedum roofs adorn the roofs.

28

Option 2: Close Masterplan This masterplan looks at the use of stepped down blocks to maximize private gardens, whilst allowing for views and minimization of large block areas, that can have a heavy overriding factor. The use of ribbon bands splits the large amounts of green space and gives a high level of biodiversity.

Typology 2

Typology 3

This Typology looks at a small cell, which due to its size means that the continuous closing of buildings is not possible, therefore opening up to other cells.

This Typology looks at a cell that is a continuous closed built form, and has buildings that form through the cell to add density

This Typology looks at a cell which combines the first two typologies, but also allows for sports facilities. This cell has both open formations and extra built forms.

Details This page looks at the relationship within one cell and to the surroundings. There are elements that affect all of the cells and some that affect only a few. This cell looks at a built up square that utilizes its small size but only having development on two sides leaving the other side open. This needs blocking using green elements to prevent the traffic noise from the roads that surround and give a closed courtyard feeling. The details of the window and balcony scheme are that if the windows face out they overlook the road and other buildings whereas if they are internal they look out onto green spaces and have less visual problems so can contain a balcony.

LEEDS, CONNECTING THE LANDSCAPE TO THE CITY

Workings This Drawing shows how the space closes to prevent outside noise whilst creating an open and inclusive Square, which can be used for markets, cafĂŠs and general socialisation.

Green gardens for Offices or houses on the ground floor

Contours on building act as private gardens on each level

Market Stalls add community shopping areas

Fountains add a wet element

Grass and Hedge prevent noise CafĂŠs open to the square Circulation is through a bottleneck reducing traffic noise

38

Trees close the ring and prevent noise from entering and add a visual blockage

Option 3: Ring Masterplan This masterplan looks at the use of the typical ring or block formation found in many cities worldwide. The use of a 15 meter wide block surrounding an open cell allows for a large amount of private courtyard space for social use. Boulevards cross the masterplan allowing for the maximization of build-able block on the maximized amount of open space. This means that through walkable lanes lead the passage through this part of the city.

Details This page looks at the relationship within one cell and to the surroundings. There are elements that affect all of the cells and some that affect only a few. This cell looks at the relationship between the open public space and the closed courtyard. In this case the land takes on the role of allotments and general green area for leisure. The trees are planted to give a screening effect to minimize views into other buildings. There is also a sedum roof to reduce the water flow onto the courtyard.
