Otley is a market town and civil parish in the City of Leeds metropolitan borough, West Yorkshire, England, by the River Wharfe. There is a current inhabitant number of 14 thousand residing in the town. The town is situated between Leeds, Bradford, York and many other prominent towns and cities. The map above shows the existing context of different amenities centring round the market square and town centre. The park is based towards the northern part of the centre directly beside the river Wharfe.

The current site of the park encompasses a play area and leisure amenities and stretches the length of the centre of town along the river. Adjacent is the old Wharfemeadows mill which historically used the power of water and a weir to power its production. Now shut down and in the process of being demolished, it is a perfect site for a new housing development with a new edge for the town. There is at present a development of out dated

style housing blocks being built next to the old factories, these should be incorporated in the design connecting to the road system that flows through. Incorporation of existing character and the surrounding area the park should be for all of the inhabitants and incorporate play as well as relaxing areas and a sense of woodland with flowering areas. Existing large trees should be retained where

feasible, and new trees should infill areas that require shade and densification.

Existing Character West

The Existing park has some retain-able characteristics and elements. In the Western part of the park the character is of colourful gardens with green lawns, these sit directly between the river and close vicinity housing, so therefore there should be a similar garden feel so as not to impact too harshly on those houses.

To the East of the park there is a lovely open lawn area with sprawling woodlands to the north and the river to the south. This area has good character and is a good space for sporting activities and dog walking. This should be retained for those purposes.

Towards the centre of the park the aspects are confused and donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t really fulfil their needs, however there is some good retain-able play equipment that could be reused in the redevelopment. The play equipment was not installed very long ago so is therefore in good condition.

Masterplan

The Masterplan includes the integration of the existing retain-able and desirable elements previously mentioned, adding new and amenable aspects to the area. The key design aims are to connect better, but mainly to use the space in a better and more interesting way, with more different areas and amenities. The incorporation of a building masterplan on the old factory site is of importance as this will pay for the redevelopment of the park.

On the page opposite can be seen a 3d view of how the park will work within its overall setting and how it integrates with the surroundings and the proposed building masterplan.

Cafe and Overlook Masterplan These two pages show how the cafe integrates within the mounding of the park and how the wall condition is made up of concrete elements with planting insets, and how the cafe has integrated outdoor seating and planting areas set down from the cafe to create a more private and quiet area.

Island Plan This page documents the existing sunken oasis between the weir and the river wall. The idea is to raise up and rigidify the island so that it can be accessed via a connecting bridge. This would allow for a quiet contemplative area with seating, planting and steps down to the waters edge. It would incorporate large trees and a grasscrete surface.

Terraced Planting Plan This page shows how a green amphitheatre and stepped planting terraces can traverse the difference in levels between the park waters edge and the road above. These would be highly colourfully planted and add a lovely garden feel to this end of the central park.

Building Masterplan This part of the masterplan is documenting the integration of a new urban area that will integrate a set of new housing as well as offices and a film-house. The housing ranges from high end directly next to the river, which are essentially glass boxes with high ceilings down to single storey housing clad in wood towards the existing town centre. The heights have been set up to buildings of 3 to 20m tall with there being an ability to create the high buildings due to its current industrial high factories existing on the site. The redevelopment will integrate all of the necessary requirements for itself including underground car parking and a theatre/ cinema/cafe, which Otley doesnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t currently have, therefore adding amenities to the area. The masterplan creates triangular axes

allowing for views to different parts of the surrounding areas.

Omni Centre

This page shows the omni centre gardens and the omni centre in the background. The omni centre will have a cinema for 200 and a theatre for 200 and include a cafe and lobby in the ground floor. The building will be open glazed in the ground floor to allow visual connection to and through to the other buildings, which have a similar typology.
