A software engineer (family of three) who spends eight hours a day in front of the computer in a claustrophobic environment is considered the client. The design aims at creating an environment which will influence both physical as well as the mental well-being of its occupants.
5. An open floor plan on the ground floor will see multiple activities happening in the morning. This will help bring more interaction between the occupants. A straight flight staircase is planned for maximum utilization of space.
4. Openings are planned only in the front and the rear side. A courtyard is created to bring about passive cooling through stack effect.
3. The portion of the site cut to create the basement is used up to create two more levels at the rear side which will accommodate the living, dining and the kitchen.
2. The site is 4’ below the road level. A basement is created and the roof of the basement acts as a ramp for the parking.

The proposal is a redesign of the existing public toilet built by the corporation under the Swatch Bharat Mission at the Marina beach in the vibrant city of Chennai. The design is developed keeping in mind the following aspects: • Adequate natural light and ventilation without compromising on the privacy. • Demarcation of wet and dry areas. • Ease of access for the physically challenged. • The building is oriented such that there is activity happening on all sides. This is help bring
about adequate surveillance. • The proposal is aimed at sourcing materials which are loaclly available. The design is aimed to create a demand for bamboo as building material. Bamboo is proposed for the reinforcement instead of steel. The masonry work can be with fly-ash bricks. • The selected site is prone to cyclones. Hence adequate openings are provided for the wind to pass through the building and thereby reduce the load on the structure.
