CENTENARY JUNIOR COLLEGE HACKETTSTOWN, NEW JERSEY HURST ROBINS ANDERSON,

PRESIDENT

June 9,

I94)

To the Class of 1945: Every year at this time, even during war, hundreds of our -young friends bring to a close thlii college experiences. Here aiCentenary we have had happy.hours together; you have built forlourielves a framework of experience which you will always carry with yorr; yo.t have madl Ifelong friends; you have crowded into a short interval of time what would have taken years tJaccompliih alone. You have new knowledge; you have acquired new skills u.rd hubitr of [v1ng; you have changed your views about some things; ybu have widened your horizons; yoi huue gotten your moorilgs, come to some convic' iions and beliefs which should help you to enjoy life more fully. You afe now mole nearly ready for the mature wodd into which you are going.

In this after-college world all of you will be given a function to perform.which you perform to the best of your ability. There can perform, and whic-h you will be expected -you to have- found many things to do here, things is a' job r..dy for each of you. As that have needed to be done, things tLat have rnade you better because- you have done them, you will find ahead of you similar urgent, claims on y-our,time and atention. You will 6i pulled this way and ihut, e*pected to do dozens of-things and all at the same time. Th'e crucial phase of this situaiion, either in or out of college, can-be_phrased in the form of two q^uestions: What will you choose to do? How will you do those things which you choose? These answers which I cherish for you are these: first, choose to do those_ things which the wofld needs mosr to have done; second, give yourselves with reckless abandon to rhe accomplishment of these objectives. Part of our trouble frankly. it tlt Y: .ltt+ too much abo'ut ourselves. There is a current play entitled "The Searching Wind" which presents the wind of social and economic uphiaval which is blowing fiercely in all parts bf the wo6d today. It is a good play. One of the characters suggests_a gte^t deal of our genefation. \7e see so much and cgffent difficulty in these iords:-"\7e are an ignorant -ourselves so much . . . Everybody thinks think about we maybe because know so little, about himself, no matter what happens." I hope this concern about self will not be characteristic of members of the class of 1945. It ias certainly not been true of you during your ljfe here.-\fhen you have seen a-need, you have sought to provide for ii. You have helped to build a. standard of student life and'govern-ent-of which we are ptoud. You must continue to live this way. There are big j6bs to be done, bigger than you may now realize. Tackle them. Do your share. Do no"t puss aroond them. Give yourselves to them, give your. lives- to them if necessafy. This, mimbers of the graduating class of l)45, is in the spirit 9f oy great American ., tradition. Never part from it. It is our gfeatest and most cherished heritage'

bnJ;'otion To HURST ROBINS ANDERSON, our President, the

class

of forty-five is proud to

dedicate its yearbook. During our two years here at Centenary he has given us wisdom

and understanding which has helped prepare us for the future. He has shown interest in our numerous problems, and his skillful guidance has lightened many a load. He

possesses

a deep insight into human nature, a quality which makes him admired by everyone, and we are proud to have been his first class.

FACULTY No Hack would ever be complete without

a sincere word of appreciation to the faculty.

You have been inspiring friends and grand spofts, evefyone of you. Do you femembef the baseball game we had

in the Grove on the first Guild picnic? Confidentially,

were much better players than we had thought you would

bunch

be.

you

S7e were one surprised

of girls when the final score was decided. And do you remember all the little

tricks we played on you in your classes? They weren't very original; a lot of them must have seemed pretry silly to

you. But when

you laughed and played along with us, you

were our friends for life.

\(e'll

never forget the lessons you have taught us. Centenary. was a lot difierent from

high school. We had many new people to meet, and new customs with which to become

acquainted. \7e were so anxious to make friends. And you were always so friendly yourselves and so helpful that

in a few weeks we felt

as though we had been here all

our lives. Regardless

of how far we travel from the "Ivied Halls," we

patience, your kindness, and your thoughtfulness.

shall remember your

CENTENARY PLAYERS The Centenary Players have been as busy as bees all year long. Nfe have learned not only the dramatic side of the stagg but also the technical, working side backstage and we've loved every minute of it.

RADIO NTORKSHOP \7e have produced three short plays, "Star Struck," "Evening Dress

Indispensable,"

and "Srength of the Weaklings," a Christmas and an Easter pageant, and rwo major productions. \7e have had a grand time together, and we hope that the Centenary Players of 1945 will enjoy as profitable a year.

Our Radio I7orkshop has also been

working over-

time. In addition to all the

radio programs that

we produced have written and just for our os'n class, we

have taken paff in four 15-minute programs on \7EST in Easton and two 30 - minute programs on

ITAAT in Newark. The Easton programs were planned, written, timed, and presented by our class.

The Newark programs were spontaneous quizz presentations about topics of interest to college stu-

dents. 'il7e'll be expecting

the Centenary \Torkshop

to have a regular program

of its own

some day soon. Best of luck to you!

BOOK CLUB The first and third Monday evening of each month will find about forty of the Book Club members assembled ar the home of Dr. and Mrs. DuBois for a meeting and what a meeting!

-

Each gathering centeis about a resumd of a novel, biography,

or perhaps a currenr best-seller about which one of the gids has offered to tell us. The "Letters of \7orld \far I,,, written and narrated by Dr. DuBois, were masrerpieces and certainly

hit home, didn't they? \7e won't forget

those right away!

I7e must mention the wonderful refreshments prepared for

us by Mrs. DuBois especially that never-to-be-forgotten fudge! And, speaking- of food, the picnic supper held at the Palmers' was super and the round-robin of songs ended the affair beaurifully. pres,i.clent, Nancy Anderson; The officers fot this ye^r ^te: Secretary, Rurh Kulp; Trcasraer, Virginia Kulp

CAMERA CIUB In spite of the shortage of films and printing and developing materials, the Camera Club has been very active this year. Hasn't some proud artist informed you that she has a picture of you, and, wasn't it terrific? Don't judge all her work by that! Many of the girls have taken some fine, prize-winning "pics."

Our program chairmen were very cooperarive. Any suggestions that the girls made were carried out to the letter. Mr. Lush, from town, brought his colored snapshots and his projector up here and showed us many pictures. They were won-

derful and we gor a lot of pointers on picture-taking and how to make snapshots interesting.

Remember the night Dr. Stewart brought his camera up to the Bio lab and took our pictures? T7e took shots both glamourous aod gruesome, developed them right after the meeting, and printed them the next day

-

more fun!

Jane Maclardy is Presi.d,mt; Lois Maclardy, Vice-prcs,idenr; and Grace Brewster, S ergeant-dt-Am?t.

OUTING CLUB A hayride to Stephens State Park started off the season for the Outing Club. Don't think for a minute that the fall breezes prevented us from having the traditional hot-dog roast before

we climbed into the hay and started our journey back to Centenary, singing all the way home. "Buck Hill, here we come!" was the cry of about sixty gids who headed for the Poconos that weekend to enjoy the winter sports. Skiing, skating, tobaggoning were the topics at school for many weeks to follow. The idea of the ski rack blowing off the car at the Gap made it so much more exciting, didn't it! Comes a dull weekend, the club sponsers a hike, picnic, or

skating pany

and that spring weekend is definitely some-

thing! Our -best wishes for next year's club hoping they have as much fun as we did.

INTERNATIONAL RELATIONS CLUB Going, going, gone! The auctioneer's voice rang out in the lounge on the night the International Relations Club put on its auction. Did you ever laugh so much?

Our club, however, spends most of its time studying serious questions of world affairs. Such topics as post-war planning,

the Latin American round table, the good neighbor policy, U. N. R. R. A., foreign policy, and the race problem are some of those discussed. The good neighbor policy struck home when on February 2l,Dr. Custard, our advisor, left C. J. C. to go as an exchange teacher to Chile.

One of the biggest evenrs of this year was the Middle Arlantic International Relations Club Conference held at Marywood College in Scranton, Pennsylvania. Several representarives

from our club were sent there. They brought back a reporr on what happened in order that we might profit from the knowledge they gained. Lee Boudinot is Presi.d.ent, Nancy Briwa is Vice-presi.clent, Mary Jane Conover is Seuetary, Gloria Hackeling is Treas*rer, and Alice \(orthington is Sergeant-at-Armt.

FRENCH CLUB The French Club spent most of the first semesrer planning and producing the annual French Cabaret. It was a lot of hard work, but everyone felt that it was worthwhile because it was such a big success. Remember how amazed everyone was when they saw the huge gym ransformed as if by magic into a low, dusky cabaret? There were just enough little round tables for each gid and her date, and the music and entertainment was lots of fun. Those dading cigarette girls with their bouncy red, white, and blue skirts added much to the atmosphere!

The French Club members have also knitted a lot of socks, sweaters, and baby sacks for the French \Var Relief. \7e really enjoyed doing it and are proud of the large box of knitted garments that

is all packed and ready to be shipped

away.

Some has been hard work but fun, too!

Clara Corell is Preident; Janet Cady is Vice-presi.dent; Alys Reese is Secretar!, and Colleen Delaney rs Treawrer,

SPANISH CLUB So you

think you can beat the experts? Ever try "Informaas we did ar a couple of our meetings?

tion Please" in Spanish

The Spanish Club was started by Genevieve Diaz last year,

vdth the aid of Papa La Motte. This year the club has Miss Goddin as its very able advisor.

Did you ever stop to think that all South Americans aren'r tall, dark, and lazy? Just as those are fallacies, we found out that all North Americans are thought to be blonde, blue eyed, and freckled!

At Christmas, the diflerent holiday customs of Mexico, puerto Rico, and Panama were presented by Miss Goddin, Genevieve, and Velma, respectively. A series of lectures were given on the cultures of the difierent Latin American countries. Genevieve Diaz is Presid.ent; Jean Collins is Vice-president; is Setetary; Jane Maclardy is Treasurer, and Anita Cordes is Sergeant-at-Arms.

If year,

the Chorus continues to grow as it has this past it will certainly soon be too big for \Thitney

Hall. At our first

rehearsals,

we discovered that we

were too Iarge a group to practice profitably together. Therefore, we became two choirs. Every other Sunday the Freshman Choir sang the chapel service, and

every other the Senior. The competition we gave each other did us good. However, the two choruses did not always sing separately. \We joined forces the afternoon the Stevens Glee Club was here. \7hat a concert that was! \7e enjoyed hearing the Stevens group sing very much' \7e sang the last few chapel services together and did some of our favorites, "Pilgrims' Chorus" and "The Last Chord." Baccalaureate music was sung by the

whole chorus also. But when Commencement rolled around, we Seniors were willing to bow out and let the Freshman Chorus sing our farewell.

\7e've had a busy, happy year together. wishes for the continued success know and the one that is to come.

The Guild is Centenary's religious and philanthropic organization. It has contributed much to local, national, and international societies. The Guild is one of the clubs in the school which has one hundred per cent membership, and we are very proud of this record. N7ithout the interest and cooperation of all of the girls, we could not have accomplished as much as we did. \7e opened our season with a huge picnic in The Grove; every member of the faculty and the student body was invited to attend. \7e had plenty of good things to eat, open fires, perfect v/eather, a few late-season swimmers, and, to top it all, a faculty-student baseball game that, to this day, remains one of the high spots of the year. \7e sponsored a card party for the benefit of local and school organizations. \7e also sponsored "Religious Emphasis \Zeek," which was a new experiment for Centenary, and a very successful one.

Everyone of us has benefited in some way by our membership in the Guild. Iil7e have of fun and have done much to help others too. Best wishes to next year's organization.

\Zhere would Centenary's sports and various other forms of recreation be if it weren't for the Vomen's Athletic Association? \7e really don't know because we've never known Centenary without it. The \7. A. A. was drawn up in the fall of 1943 with the idea in mind to give to the girls a recreational program which they ihemselves would have p^tt irr planning. ^

This year the \W. A. A. has been the instigator of several parties and picnics. It sponsored the basketball tournaments and assisted in paying for the referee. Also at the end of our school year the \f. A. A. awarded emblems and certificates to those gids who excelled in particular sports. Let's hope that next year the

much success as

it

has had this year.
