Our goal: Bring light to the darkness of business-related depression

M

y job comes with perk of nearly constant interaction with achievers. I’m talking about you inspirational and aspirational people with vision, gravitas and intelligence. For you, success is more common than failure. This week’s cover story and added online content on entrepreneurs and mental health awareness are part of a collaboration with our national online daily Upstart Business Journal and our colleagues in Seattle at the Puget Sound Business Journal. It began here and developed over several months of thought, effort and consideration from TBBJ’s Pam Huff. Inspiration has come from many places. There is increasing willingness to examine hard questions about impact of stress, depression, mental

illness, suicide and failure on businesspeople. Local and national incidents, including the death last year of Robin Williams, have widened the spotlight in a search for answers about diagnosis, treatment and safety nets. Not only do entrepreneurs place a huge amount of pressure on themselves to succeed, the leaders of small, handson firms hold great responsibility for the livelihoods and well-being of their small staffs. It’s a lot to shoulder. As you’ll see in the reporting, Tampa Bay’s startup scene is evolving but is deficient to service the emotional ramifications of that growth. Available resources for struggling entrepreneurs is lacking. Established employers that provide ample benefits – like the TBBJ — often include employee assistance programs. But those aren’t often as

accessible to startups. As the local startup scene evolves and matures, and as funding sources for early stage entrepreneurs seems to be loosening, coverage of the entire spectrum of a businesses life is demanding a closer look. Since last October, TBBJ’s Wade Millward has been covering the startup beat and he also contributed to this effort. Looking forward, among its assets, this business community has many kind people and lots of good listeners who can provide real and substantive advice. Some of the answer lies in expanded peer support. The hope is that our most successful business leaders remember their own times of struggle and do more to watch out for others trying to emulate their winning ways.

The ‘F’ Word

uccesses and failure. Bigger and better. Upset and angry. Broken. Challenging. Multibillion-dollar potential. These are all words Milind Bharvirkar, 47, used to describe his journey from starting a business in San Jose, to leaving San Jose, to starting up in Tampa and losing everything, to starting over again. “I walked away with more money than I’ve ever had — seven figures in the bank,” Bharvirkar — now president of Priatek — said about his experience with a coin-operated game business he started out West that ended with him “bowing out gracefully.” “I thought getting that kind of success and being on the cover of magazines and making lots of money would make me happy,” he said. “I built a baby and walked away angry and upset.” He came to Tampa with family members and wanted to start a bigger and better company. He licensed big-name games — think “Wheel of Fortune” and Marvel characters from “The Avengers.” But the technology took too long to build. Licenses expired. The recession hit. He had no capital to continue. Bharvirkar lost half a million dollars, filed for personal and corporate bankruptcy and his fiancee walked out. It was the lowest he’d ever been. Comparing failure support systems in San Jose to those in Tampa is something he had never thought about. “It’s par for the course in San Jose,” Bharvirkar said. “People understand there are entrepreneurs who have successes and failure; they’re open-book about it more than they are here.” It took a phone call with a friend, who could hear how depressed he was, to help Bharvirkar reconnect with his faith. “The only way I could make the pain go away was to read the Bible,” he said. Now he’s back in the game business, married and expecting his second child. Lacking a support system could be a factor in holding Tampa Bay back as a hub of entrepreneurship. While our large economic development agencies chase corporate relocations, the scrappy startup community is left to fend for itself.

Though the Tampa-Hillsborough Economic Development Corp.’s Business Recruitment and Expansion program assists companies of all sizes in Hillsborough County, its primary focus is retaining companies with a significant capital investment in the area that pay higher than average wages in the state, according to an EDC spokesperson. If entrepreneurs are better able to pull themselves out of a slump, homegrown companies will turn into larger companies, which will provide jobs and have significant community impact. Absolute Mobile Solutions’ president Alfred Goldberg, also a board member at Tampa Bay Wave, agrees. “The difference between cities like San Francisco and Tampa is that, in San Francisco, they embrace failure. But you’ve got to go beyond that,” Goldberg said. “They’ve got a huge safety net.”

Linking the two New research shows entrepreneurs are more likely to suffer depression and other mental illness than the general population. Several high-profile suicides, including that of tech whiz Aaron Swartz, have highlighted the problem and brought attention to resources available for entrepreneurs in markets like Silicon Valley and Boston. But in metros with nascent startup communities, like Tampa Bay, the support system helping to deal with failure and its fallout essentially doesn’t exist. In more mature tech hubs, startup events go a step further than connecting idea generators with each other and with funding. FailCon, for example, is a oneday conference started in San Francisco that has popped up in other cities around the globe. Tech entrepreneurs, investors, developers and designers study their

own and others’ failures to help them prepare for success. Cass Phillipps, global producer for FailCon, said she’s interested in creating something even more intimate, where founders can open up to each other. “There is support for founders who have moved past their failures and are now working to come back — tons of places that love to have them share their stories and offer support for others,” Phillipps said. “But as you can tell, it’s still really lacking in between the failure and acceptance.” Portland, Ore., is an area known for collaboration. Starve Ups, a peer mentoring, networking and support group for entrepreneurs, bills itself as a resource of founders for founders. Highly driven people are very self-critical, said Dr. Rahul Mehra, CEO and chief medical officer of MehraVista Health, a company in Indian Rocks Beach that implements employee assistance programs. “There’s a delicate balance between

COVER STORY being self-critical but taking it too far, to the point of really beating yourself up,” Mehra said. “It’s that self-criticism that can lead to depression, anxiety and a further state of emotional barriers that are created that keep that entrepreneur from overcoming those hurdles and achieving their own business goals.” There is also a stigma in revealing weaknesses to peers. “They don’t want other entrepreneurs to think they made mistakes,” Goldberg said. “I know some startups that were very promising and got a lot of publicity over the last two years, and then they made some really bad decisions. Their personal lives are in turmoil, their family lives are just completely in jeopardy. And they’re like drowning people.”

His hunch was right. Fitlife Foods has been a success and has expanded in Tampa Bay. The very product he sells — the “fit” lifestyle and good nutrition — are what kept him from getting down while starting the business. He also leaned on his wife, Laura, and their children for support. FailCon’s Phillipps said many founders are turning to advisors or career coaches when they are down. Osterweil called upon Jennifer Hall, an executive coach and senior trainer at Eckerd College in the Leadership Development Institute. She’s author of the Entrepreneurial Mindset Profile, an online profiling system and test of sorts that gauges how entrepreneurial you are. (For the record: I’ve taken it and discovered I am not entrepreneurial.) “There are times when you know your spouse doesn’t want to hear it, so you have to have somebody who could be objective and give you good feedback,” Osterweil said. Hall warns other entrepreneurs to be careful of the “coach” title. “I’m a trained psychologist,” she said. “That’s a protected term. Coaching is not a protected term and anybody can call themselves a coach.” Finding someone you trust to advise you is important when you feel there’s nowhere else to turn and you don’t have health care coverage yet. But “it’s a buyer beware situation” when reaching out to a coach, Hall said. Life coaches and advisers are incremental aspects of establishing a viable support system for local entrepreneurs. It’s going to take a broader community effort like the ones found in startup hotbeds. That’s no small feat. Entrepreneurs are by nature busy, independent people. But building a network of lifelines will pay dividends for the Bay area startup scene’s mental health — and business health as well.

Her Jabil co-honoree, Meredith Kovarik, director of supply chain, favors “sponsorship,” a concept that she said is more active than mentorship. “Sponsorship is having someone a couple of levels above you who doesn’t give you advice but gives you opportunities, invites you to meetings that you wouldn’t otherwise be invited to,” Kovarik said. “Find that person who will sponsor you, who believes in your capabilities and will push you into situations you are uncomfortable with because you haven’t done that before. As long as that sponsor is there to support you in case you get a little flustered or get off track, that sponsor can get you back on the rails and make sure you have the resources you need to grow.”

Dawn of a new city in downtown Tampa Downtown Tampa isn’t a thriving 24/7 neighborhood yet — but the numbers are trending that way. Vacancies are down across every sector of commercial real estate in the city center, and prices are creeping up to the point that could justify new construction. Residential development, urban renewal experts say, is the foundation of a thriving downtown. It creates a customer base for the retail and restaurants that make a neighborhood a destination, and a tax base to fund amenities like parks and green space. Downtown Tampa has traditionally been anchored by its office market, and it will take a combination of more office workers and residents — and residents who can walk to work — to revitalize the city center. On the residential side, rents are trending toward all-time highs, and the for-sale market appears to be coming back, too. About 4 percent of the downtown condo inventory — 85 units — is for sale, said Dave Traynor, a vice president of real estate and developer services with Smith & Associates in Tampa. That point

Units in Grand Central at Kennedy, Traynor said, fetch an average sales price of $256 per square foot. That number is slightly higher in Towers at Channelside and Skypoint — $358 and $326 per square foot, respectively. Prices need to be closer to $400 per square foot to justify new construction. In downtown St. Petersburg, where three condo towers are in the works, prices are around $500 per square foot. Traynor said he’s encountering potential buyers who visit downtown Tampa and see things like the Sail Pavilion, recently opened Ferg’s and the soon-tobe-completed Riverwalk and want to live within walking distance of it. Most of those buyers are interested in the neighborhood as it is, not just the potential of Tampa Bay Lightning Owner Jeff Vinik’s plans for the souther fringe of the urban core. Most see Vinik’s plans as “the exciting outlier that’s a couple years away,” he said.

A walkable, car-optional urban core could drive economic growth Tampa Bay Lightning Owner Jeff Vinik has hired two household names in urban planning to bring his billion-dollar vision to life. Vinik’s real estate company, Strategic Property Partners, has brought on two consultants for a 120-day term: Jeff Speck, Washington, D.C.-based author of “Walkable City: How Downtown Can Save America, One Step at a Time” and Dave Dixon of Stantec’s Urban Places Group. Dixon and Speck will master plan the district, sketching out every detail from tree placement to road and sidewalk width to building heights and set-

backs. All of those details are driven by what makes a space an enticing, walkable, interesting place. The pair realizes they’re up against a

street grid that makes the existing neighborhood a scary place for pedestrians. “It’s dangerous because the streets look and feel like they’re designed for going high speeds, because they are designed for going high speeds,” Speck said. “So one of our key charges is creating street configurations that encourage driving the posted speed limit.” It’s not just the Channel district or the roads around Vinik’s land that are dangerous — Speck points out that four of the five most dangerous places to be a pedestrian in the U.S. are in Florida, and one of them is Tampa Bay. In fact, Florida led the nation in pedestrian deaths in the

first six months of 2014 with 292 fatalities, according to data the Governors Highway Safety Association released in February. The existing Channel district isn’t truly walkable because it doesn’t connect to anything else around it, Dixon said. Connecting Vinik’s neighborhood to the Channel district and the urban core is what could make that corner of the city a truly walkable area. “Ultimately, making it more walkable means creating the right mix of uses so that people can live, work, play and enjoy their lives without often leaving the district,” Speck said.

Jack Latvala, R-Clearwater, and Rep. Kathleen Peters, R-South Pasadena, and moderated by Nancy Stephens from the Florida Manufacturing Association. In a lightning session panel discussion, with each speaker given three minutes to talk about a topic, Stephens first turned to Dick Peck with QTM, a small manufacturer in the area, to talk about a sales tax exemption for manufacturing machinery and equipment.

I can also tell you I used it several times and all the manufacturers that I’ve talked to, all the sales tax we saved, none of it went back into our pockets. It all went back into buying more equipment, tooling, and employing people. We’re pushing to make it a standard deduction. A lot of manufacturers and reps did not know that this bill had passed. We need to communicate about this. And the other thing I’d like to say is there’s still a shortage of manpower. That’s my biggest thing right now. I have great equipment. I just don’t have enough manpower.

The next speaker is Bill Wilson and he’s going to talk about the Communications Services Tax bill proposed this year in the legislature, which has already passed at least one committee in the Senate. Wilson: The Communications Services Tax applies to telecommunica-

tions, video, direct-to-home satellite, and related services. The tax is comprised of two parts: the Florida communications services tax and the local communications services tax. The Florida tax is 9.17 percent on landlines, etc. Between state and local tax it’s 14.17 percent on average. Gov. Scott proposed the reduction of the state portion of the tax by 3.6 percentage points. The bill has made it through the Senate and mirrors the gov-

Stephens: There is a temporary sales tax exemption and the proposed bill is to make that permanent. Next we’ll hear from Jeff Croskey of Creative Sign Designs to talk about proposed legislation that would reduce the sales tax on commercial leases. Croskey: I wanted to share our story. The company is 29 years old. A couple of years ago we had 56 employees and were losing money. Now we have 115 employees and are growing out of our facility. We’re looking for a 90,000-square-foot building. Our owners are looking at owning versus lease because of the cost of tax for leasing. CAM (common area maintenance) is part of the lease and base rate. CAM is a tax. So we’d be paying double tax. It’s a $53,000 a year sales tax as part of the lease. Most are 10-year lease terms. That’s over half a million in sales tax. Florida is one of the few or the only state that has a tax on this. We don’t want to face that tax penalty because it limits us. Stephens: I think this is important, too, because right now we’re not competitive with other states. We’re either the last state or one of the last states to still have this sales tax on commercial

out the state. CareerSource in Tampa Bay and Pinellas offer a lot of different training programs. The Quick Response Training and Incumbent Worker programs are handled at the state level. QRT is designed to train and retrain for new jobs in the state of Florida. QRT has been around since 1990 with little or no training in all those years. We’ve been here through good and bad times. We offered up an online application process and streamlined the reimbursement process and opened it up so more training could be covered under QRT. Those were good for the routine QRT. With the $12 million we get every year, we needed to bump it up to work with the local education providers. For example, if a company is going to develop 500 new jobs, we can then partner with the local education entity to be sure the training program gets started. This lets us bring together a pool of talent. I also wanted to talk a few minutes about the governor’s high-skill/highwage program that offers $30 million program for advanced manufacturing skill training. It would go toward STEM (science, technology, engineering and mathematics) occupations and careers. It would also offer up equipment dollars. We would hold back 30 percent just for advanced manufacturing.

Stephens: I’m going to go back a little bit in time. Over the past year, the manufacturers have been opening up their plants for tours. What they discovered is they were educating a lot of students through these plant tours, but not getting teachers or parents involved. The governor came up with this proposal that would allow teachers to go into manufacturing plants and STEM businesses during the summer and it would be paid for by the state. So this would be money for teacher scholarships. We would like to see this brought back. The next thing we wanted to talk CONTINUED ON PAGE 14

about is the state match which is in the governor’s proposed budget for a national institute for standards in technology, a federal grant that has been awarded to the state of Florida. And Bill Wilson is going to talk about that for us. Wilson: At the end of the last month, the Manufacturing Extension partnership, a program of the U.S. Department of Commerce, announced the funding for a new center in Florida dedicated to helping state small and medium—sized manufacturers: Florida Makes, through the Manufacturers Association of Florida, and Center for Advanced Manufacturing Excellence was named the recipient of that award. The center will offer manufacturers services that will help them develop new products and customers and expand into new markets. The center will join the Federal Manufacturing Extension Partnership’s national network of 60 centers across the U.S. to help manufacturers solve business problems and identify growth opportunities. FloridaMakes, with the new funding, will leverage a network of 12 industry— driven regional manufacturing associations, and that together they’ll serve the manufacturers statewide. Stephens: Now we’re going to go on to export assistance. Preston: I’ll talk about the Export Assistance program first. There are three programs: We worked for quite a while to get in the governor’s recommendations. There is $1 million available for these grants. They were included in the budget for the last two years and are recommended for this year. They helped the small manufacturer. It helps Florida manufacturers to pin point the best countries for their exports. A second grant is to offset the cost of a trades how booth. Third, the Gold Key matchmaker program uses partners from around the world. It is for matchmaking with businesses looking to purchase your product. We have a network of offices in 15 countries around the world. These grants are available so we can take products to countries over there. A lot of our focus is on the incentive program. We have to compete with every state and other countries for jobs. We have a lot to offer: our infrastructure, our quality of life, but a lot of southern states have that. Incentives are performance based. Once you receive an incentive, you have to meet some requirements. The QTI is a good example, a rebate on taxes is a good example of that. Quick Action Closing Fund, we can come in and get those funds released more quickly.

How do we structure it as a cash grant available, but be sure there are incentives in place? They go into an escrow account and once you meet your requirements, those funds are released. We’re looking at improving the cash flow on that. We need to tell the story of doing business in Florida better around the world. We need to continue to have metrics to release those funds, but use the money. Capital Investment Tax Credit pro-

gram, for capital intensive projects. The thresholds are very high for someone coming into Florida. Right now it is 1,000 jobs and $100 million in capital investment. Sen. Stargel has been working on this bill to lower some of these thresholds — down to 100 jobs and $25 million in capital investment as long as you are an existing Florida organization. The long-term impacts will make a huge difference. We have large manufacturers

who have large facilities and they want to expand. They are going to go where they are treated the best. If we can see a permanent removal on the sales tax exemption – we’re really seeing the manufacturing sector pick up. Let’s continue that momentum.
