Turnover in the boardroom at NorthStar Bank brings new expertise By Margie Manning Senior Staff Writer

TAMPA — Executives in health care, manufacturing and education are among the newest members of the NorthStar Bank board of directors. The bank expanded its board to 15 members bringing in six new directors who replaced five founding directors. Bank directors can bring fresh perspective, business acumen and new contacts to help financial institutions, while also boosting their own resumes and gaining prestige in the community. It can be tough to attract community bank directors in the current economic environment because of the risk that directors could be held liable for poor decisions, particularly at banks with credit problems, said Michael Blanchard, chief executive of Blanchard Consulting Group in Atlanta. NorthStar’s strong balance sheet was key in drawing its new directors, said Marty Traber, partner at Foley & Lardner LLP and a founding NorthStar director who stepped down.

put more capital into the bank, which currently has one location and $171.2 million in assets, but NorthStar elected not to take capital it doesn’t need. “One you do, you have to have a return [on that capital], and that sometimes forces poor decisions,” such as opening branches or making loans that bankers would later regret, Weigel said. Stock grants are a common form of compensation for bank directors, who then have an incentive to increase the value of their stock by focusing on the long-term success of the organization, Blanchard said. Community banks often also pay

competitive fees, usually in the form of cash, to directors, ranging from $200 to $300 up to $1,000 per meeting. Other business interests Traber said he stepped down from the bank board because of his friendships with other bank CEOs or chairmen. “There was a level of discomfort in hiring me or my firm while sitting on the board of a competitor.” Also leaving the NorthStar board were Dr. Kiran Patel, founder of Freedom Health; Paresh Patel, chairman and chief executive of Homeowners Choice Inc. (Nasdaq:

HCII); Gregory Politis, president of Xenia Management LLC, a real estate portfolio management firm; and Mark Berset, chief executive of Comegys Insurance. Weigel said each of the directors who stepped down did so because their other business interests were taking more of their time. John H. Sykes, founder of wealth manager JHS Capital Holdings Inc. and founder emeritus of Sykes Enterprises Inc. (NYSE: SYKE), remains chairman of the NorthStar board. mmmanning@bizjournals.com | 813.342.2473

‘Stable workhorse’ NorthStar’s core capital — a key measure of financial stability — was 8.6 percent as of June 30, well above the 5 percent level that bank regulators consider “well capitalized.” Capital levels were even higher when adjusting for risk in the loan portfolio with key ratios at NorthStar standing at more than twice the “well capitalized” level. The bank avoided a concentration in risky assets classes such as real estate and land loans, said Monty Weigel, president and chief executive. “Those products were very profitable for banks through most of the decade, but the problem is once the merry-go-round stops, it stops abruptly,” he said. “We could have grown faster, but we’d rather be the stable workhorse instead of the flash in the pan.” Directors and other investors want to

Business: Demand, not tax breaks, will boost hiring By KENT HOOVER Washington Bureau Chief

TAX BREAKS

at Threshold Acoustics in Chicago, thinks his business would benefit from President Obama’s proposal to spend $25 billion on modernizing schools. That’s because Pfeiffer’s firm provides consulting services to architects designing auditoriums, concert halls and churches. But Pfeiffer doesn’t think the tax breaks for businesses in Obama’s jobs plan will do much to spur job growth. The tax incentives for hiring are “so incremental” that they wouldn’t be a deciding factor on whether to bring on an additional employee, he said. Hiring decisions are based on whether a business needs additional people to keep up with demand. Tax breaks account for $253 billion of Obama’s proposed $447 billion plan. The president wants Congress to cut in half the usual payroll tax rate paid by employees and their employers. Employers who increase their payrolls, either by hiring or giving employees a raise, would be exempted from payroll taxes on this increase. The plan would give businesses a $4,000 tax credit if they hire someone who has been unemployed six months or more. More generous tax credits would be provided to employers who hire unemployed veterans. The payroll tax cut would shore up cash flow for small businesses and help the selfemployed, who pay the employer’s and employee’s share of payroll taxes. ‘Great time’ to buy equipment The president’s proposal also includes incentives for businesses to invest in new equipment. It calls for extending into 2012 a current break that allows businesses to immediately write off all the cost of new

As part of his plan to boost jobs, President Obama proposes: • 50 percent reduction in the employer’s share of payroll taxes for the first $5 million in payroll • No payroll taxes on any growth in payroll of up to $50 million • $4,000 tax credit for businesses that hire workers who have been unemployed for at least six months • $5,600 credit for businesses that hire unemployed veterans, $9,600 credit if they have service-connected disabilities • Extension of tax break that allows businesses to write off 100 percent of investments in new equipment instead of depreciating them over time Source: White House

equipment instead of depreciating the capital expenditure over time. “That’s very advantageous to anyone that’s expanding,” said Nicholas Crocetti, a director in the Plymouth Meeting, Pa., office of accounting firm CBIZ who works with privately held companies. But, like the tax incentives for hiring, a business has to be convinced that it will get a return on this investment. One of Crocetti’s clients, a general contractor, took advantage of the accelerated depreciation break when it purchased $1 million worth of highway equipment to perform an upcoming contract. “It’s a great time to buy,” he said, because construction equipment companies are desperate for business. But Crocetti added, it was “the contract that drove everything,” not the tax break. khoover@bizjournals.com | 703.258.0845

SPECIAL REPORT

KATHLEEN CABBLE

Casey Paquet, director of marketing, communications and Web services for Eckerd College. Left, Eckerd College student Ashley Porterfield, East Asian Studies, uses the college’s new virtual tour app on her iPad.

Private colleges invest in tools for touring Visual details seen as key to recruiting students By Margaret Cashill Staff Writer

Twenty years ago, prospective college students leafed through brochures that arrived in the mail. A decade later, they accessed websites. Today’s prospective college student can go several steps further by taking virtual college tours, often with 360-degree views. As technology advances, schools continue to invest, hire staff and enlist outside firms to stay ahead. Eckerd College partnered with TourWrist, a provider of online and mobile marketing platforms based in Tampa, to launch the Eckerd College App earlier this year. Avail-

able through the iTunes App Store, the app offers 360-degree panoramic tours of the college’s campus. The Eckerd College App is geared toward prospective students for whom Eckerd’s 188-acre waterfront campus in St. Petersburg is a “compelling story,” said Casey Paquet, director of marketing, communications and Web services. “We hook them with the visuals and have the additional information available,” he said. “As you go through, you can read about the locations, the majors and what it’s like to get a degree here.” Eckerd invested roughly $5,000 to set up the app and $1,200 to hire a photographer to shoot 20 locations around campus. TourWrist built the application, and Eckerd populated the content. The college expects to spend about $580 a year to maintain the site.

QR codes and more Beyond virtual tours, colleges and universities are exploring new ways to market with technology. Web analytics, in particular Google analytics, show what people are doing online and why they behave certain ways, said Casey Paquet, director of marketing, communications and Web services for Eckerd College. Eckerd created a personalized website that asks students for a small amount of information in exchange for customized content. University of Tampa will add QR codes to its mailings that lead to websites prepopulated with information. Eventu-

ally UT would like to put QR codes at vantage points around the campus so visitors can access information about buildings, said Dennis Nostrand, vice president for enrollment management. Based on the popularity of its Facebook Group for law students, Stetson University College of Law launched a private social network offering forums, interest groups and announcements to help students prepare for law school. “Students came to orientation knowing each other from connections online,” said Davina Gould, director of publications and online communications.

— Margaret Cashill

Since the company launched in January, TourWrist has seen strong demand in the “education space,” said CEO Charles Armstrong. A virtual college tour is a powerful marketing tool, he said. “Not everyone has the privilege to go check out the campus,” Armstrong said. “That’s been our immediate, obvious opportunity.” Eckerd is one of many colleges and universities in the Tampa Bay area, and around the country, to offer virtual tours. Stetson University College of Law launched its virtual campus tour in August 2010, working with Virtually Anywhere, a virtual tour developer based in Austin, Texas. Stetson has long understood the Web is the No. 1 resource for students researching colleges, and prospective law school students are no exception, said Davina Gould, Stetson’s director of publications and online communications. “Many of the students out of state apply before they have the chance to visit in person,” Gould said. “Having the virtual tour with audio and video provides the feeling of what it’s like to be here.” While Virtually Anywhere developed the tour and provided the 360-degree images, Stetson integrated its own content into the format, including links to video and audio clips and text. This spring Stetson made the tour available for mobile devices and is preparing to add an illustrated campus map in place of a flat overhead map. Carrington Weems, founder and owner of Virtually Anywhere, began offering virtual tours in 1998 as a division of his photography business. Eventually virtual tours became 100 percent of his business. Health care, education and corporate

communications, in that order, are the firm’s greatest sources of clients. In the Tampa Bay area, Virtually Anywhere also works with Tampa General Hospital and St. Joseph’s Hospital. Virtually Anywhere’s education clients include universities, small colleges and some school districts, which often use the technology as a recruiting tool. “We try to engage with students and shoot photographs that allow a prospective student to feel he or she is in the room, experiencing it first hand,” Weems said. Virtually Anywhere publishes its pricing on its website. Packages for colleges and universities start just under $5,000. Using internal resources The University of Tampa is also at work on a virtual campus tour, but instead of hiring an outside firm, the school enlisted graphic design students to build the tour. The students have been working on the tour since last spring and over the summer, in a project that has provided “experiential education,” said Dennis Nostrand, vice president for enrollment management. The university’s main investment has been the time and energy of its students and its instructors, including Media Services Director John Stepro, who leads the project. Unlike other tours, it will be a mixture of photographs and renditions by graphic designers. Users can go inside buildings, walk down hallways and into classrooms. “You would think that you are really there,” Nostrand said of the tour. He expects the tour to go live in October. mcashill@bizjournals.com | 813.342.2463

TAMPA BAY BUSINESS JOURNAL

KATHLEEN CABBLE

Manatee County government employees Claudia Campos, Darin Cushing and Robin Amos work out during lunch. See more about this year’s Healthiest Employer and the ManateeChoice self-insurance program on Page 22.

Wellness programs keep maturing, provide big benefit to the bottom line Welcome to the 2011 Healthiest Employers Awards special publication. We’ve heard it before. If you ask a CEO what their company’s most important asset is, it tends to uniformly be “the people.” Now in its second year, the Tampa Bay Business Journal works exclusively with Indianapolis-based HealthiestEmployers, a technology and data research company focused on corporate wellness. The firm’s proprietary Muellner technology was developed in conjunction with wellness experts, physicians, professors, employers and human resource professionals. In the case of the newspaper, the collaboration provides for an arms-length tool to identify and honor those local businesses that have made a rewarding realization — a healthier workplace means happier employees who are more productive, use less sick time and remain loyal longer. To participate, employers completed an online assessment designed to provide a non-biased measurement that scores worksite wellness programs in comparison with regional and national employers. It focused on six categories: culture and leadership, foundational components, strategic planning, communications and marketing, programming and interventions and reporting and analysis. As readers will notice as they peruse our winners’ answers to questions about their best practices, programs that reward the wellness efforts of their employees are really maturing — and have become part of these businesses’ culture, not just an added amenity of their workplaces. Education, a key component of a corporate wellness program, may not be enough to motivate. Long term, a huge potential savings in health care is likely to come from behavioral change in which people are more often taking preventative actions to steer

clear of chronic conditions and detect others early. That theme seems to bind the efforts at play in our winning workplaces. Duke Realty, for example, does a complete biometric wellness screening with generous incentives for participation. At Fowler White Boggs, employees now have a chance to gain discounts in their care costs through participation in wellness efforts. At KCI Technologies, there are medical premium credits and $25 Dick’s Sporting Goods gift card raffles as part of quarterly Health Awareness Days. Clearly, these firms are on the right track. The good news is that there’s an increased prevalence of wellness programs, use of incentives and more nationally, according to the Rhode Island-based wellness program outsourcing firm Preventure and its 2011 Wellness Trends and Best Practices Report. It found that corporate wellness programs around the country are thriving with 76 percent of companies saying they will maintain or increase their wellness investment in 2011. The report also found that nearly a quarter of respondents are actively tracking return on investment for their wellness programs with an average outcome of $3.71 returned for each $1 invested. In a sluggish recovery, it makes even more sense to put these programs in place, and we hope the portion of readers who can but don’t will come to see the light. It’s never too late to get started. Once again, our hearty and healthy congratulations to all the 2011 honorees, and welcome inspired newcomers to jump in for 2012.
