Some people, they say, live to eat. Others, they say, live to work. As for me; I live to be surprised. Pleasantly, that is. For a quarter of a century, I have been alive on this planet; another witness to its bizarreness and its beauty; another set of lungs. And thinking back, many of my most treasured memories entail some element of surprise. I must have been four or five years old when, one day, I accompanied my mother to pick up some drycleaning. Down the stairs came a lady carrying a strange cardboard box, which she then promptly proceeded to hand to me. Inside, curled up into a tiny ball of black and white prickles, snout all snuggly tucked in, lay a tiny hedgehog. Sadly, my hedgehog was a crafty little creature, and disappeared from my house the very same day. Despite my new pet’s swift escape, the incident left me with a memory that will probably, one day, have my grandchildren exchange knowing looks when I start telling the story for the umpteenth time. I will also never forget coming home from school one sweltering summer’s day, and my mother announcing that for lunch, that day, I would be having nothing but ice cream. Later on, surprise would sometimes present itself in the most strangely serendipitous ways. Bumping into an old friend in a strange city (Facebook does not count), having a car pull out just when you really need a parking spot, or a random stranger giving you a bar of chocolate. (It happens, really. And there was nothing wrong with the chocolate.) A few months ago I was most wonderfully surprised when, attempting to pay for my parking ticket, coins kept gushing from the machine as if I had just won the lottery. Surprise is a strange thing; intended surprise is born in the realm of the imagined. It is playful, and full of magic, and triumphs over all that is predictable. But perhaps the strangest thing about surprise is that the greater your capacity for surprise, and appreciation of it, the more likely you are to find things unexpectedly delighting you. To my parents for surprising me in the best ways possible, to my boyfriend for leaving Swiss chocolate on the kitchen counter, and to the kind stranger for picking up my wallet and leaving it with the shop attendant; many, many thanks. My challenge to you this month; spare a thought, stir up some creativity, invest some imagination, and surprise someone.

My fiancÊ, Terrick, and I flew on 1time to Port Elizabeth a few months ago, to participate in the Ironman race in Nelson Mandela bay. Terrick had boxed his bike, and during check-in we left it with a 1time consultant. After a lovely flight, we excitedly we got off the plane and went to collect our belongings. Soon it became clear that the bike was not on the aeroplane, and no-one could tell us where it was. I am sure you can comprehend the complete anxiety that overcame us, as a year of sacrifice and training could now have been for nothing if we didn’t have the bike by that Sunday. Terrick started talking to an employee named Judith, who told us that there were no more 1time flights arriving until the following morning. She also told us that her shift would end at 6:30 pm, and assured us that she would call us later with an update. By then we were extremely worried, but knew there was nothing more we could do until the following morning. To our surprise we received a call from Judith at 7:00 pm, half an hour after she was supposed to have finished working. She informed us that the bike had been left in Johannesburg, but that she managed to get it onto a flight to Port Elizabeth on a different airline, and that it would be arriving later that night. We were so relieved and impressed that she had actually contacted us, and that the bike was on its way. We returned to the airport later that night and waited patiently for the bike to come through, which it did, and in one piece! Terrick completed his second Ironman that Sunday. Even though Judith probably didn’t realise how important it was for us to get the bike, she went out of her way give us peace of mind, and get it back to us. Her commitment does not go unnoticed, and is very much appreciated. Regards, Bronwyn mcArthur

South African Art Talent In London

New Life for Plett Post Office

Bring It On (Get Nasty remix), 2008, by Julia Clarke

Cape Town gallery, Whatiftheworld, has been invited to take a dual exhibition to London’s Ferreira Projects Gallery from 9th to 26th July 2008. The exhibition will feature the work of emerging South African artists Zander Blom (‘The Drain of Progress’) and Julia Rosa Clark (‘Hypocrite’s Lament’). Both Blom and Rosa Clark are represented by Whatiftheworld / Gallery in Woodstock, Cape Town. Zander Blom’s Drain of Progress was recently hailed by freize Magazine (UK) as one of the “most internationally significant solo exhibitions of 2007,” and Julia Rosa Clark’s Hypocrite’s Lament, was the SA Critics Choice Award winner for 2007. Whatiftheworld owners Justin Rhodes and Cameron Munro are travelling to London to personally present the exhibition and generate interest in these emerging South African talents. In return, Whatiftheworld hopes to build on this global relationship by hosting European-based emerging artists here in Cape Town in 2008 and 2009.

The historical Old Post Office (dating back to the early 1900s) at The Upper Deck Lifestyle centre in Plettenberg Bay, has been given a new lease on life by Ara Manuelian and Noelle Bolton who converted it into an eatery reminiscent of days gone by. The Old Post Office was painstakingly restored to its former glory, and blends beautifully with the über design of the surrounding chic centre. Manuelian and Bolton state: “We wanted to show how old and new can complement each other, and of course to provide a unique yet casual eatery to the upgraded town centre. The food and atmosphere was to bring back the simplicity of wholesome, farm style food.” Guests can feast on traditional delicacies, but the pièce de résistance is the lunchtime Harvest Table menu. Operating hours are from 9 am to 5 pm Monday to Friday, 9 am to 2 pm Saturday.

Lucky Avis Rent a Car competition winner, Dan Schilling, has won three months of driving bliss in a luxurious new Mercedes C-Class. Schilling was one of several Avis customers who rented a Mercedes C-Class last year. He was automatically entered into the competition and selected as the winner via an SMS campaign. Avis MD, Wayne Duvenage, explains that Avis gives discerning users the opportunity to choose from a wide range of luxury vehicles such as the Mercedes C-Class. “Avis receives many of these cars long in advance of motor dealerships, which gives customers a taste of the exotic vehicles before they are officially on the roads,” he says. Schilling says he is delighted about winning the competition. “When I rented a Mercedes C-Class in Richards Bay last year I remember the manager asking me how I enjoyed driving it. I told him it felt like being home. That’s because I am German and my wife imported me to South Africa,” he says.

rs oc k uccess Prime Circle

Story by Laura Cooke Pix © Lillith Leda

In 2001 a small, unknown band from Emalahleni (or Witbank, as many people still know it), entered the South African rock scene – and proceeded to blow the socks off

W

fans across the country. ith their first two CDs reaching gold and platinum staus, a multitude of hit singles on the airwaves, a third album fresh out of the studio and an impressive line-up of live gigs, Prime Circle has undeniably ‘made it’. The early days of Prime Circle go back seven years to a small town and – says bassist Marco Gomes – “a bunch of boys looking for the same dream, and believing it”. Prime Circle was formed as Marco, Gerhard and Dirk’s band at the time was reaching the end of its run, while at the same time Ross’s band was also winding down. The four came together and Prime Circle was born, with Ross Learmonth on vocals and rhythm guitar, Dirk Bisschoff on lead guitar, Marco Gomes on bass guitar, and Gerhard Venter on

drums and backing vocals. As Venter explains, “From there, all else is history. We recorded an EP and sent it to all the record labels. The first single, Hello, went to radio, and here we are today, still doing what we love most.” The latest addition to the band is session keyboardist Neil Breytenbach, who joined the tightly-knit crew roughly nine months ago. Neil added fresh perspective to the band, and fit seamlessly into the group from the outset. “We threw him into the deep end, and the minute he was on stage, he played wonderfully,” recalls Learmonth. Since then, Breytenbach has formed an integral part of the group, as they work together pushing each other’s limits, writing lyrics, and creating “feel good rock” music. When asked what the best part about being in Prime Circle is, Breytenbach states: “We wake up every day being able to play music, which means we get to

follow our dreams and passion.” Like every success story, what appears to be an overnight sensation takes hard work and perseverance. Prime Circle may have a loyal and fanatical support base today, but in the beginning, not all their gigs were well attended. Venter shares his recollection of one of their worst gigs, “I can’t recall the name of the club now, but it was somewhere in Jo’burg South. We had the other band that played with us as a crowd, and they had us. They were a three-piece, and we were a four-piece, so they had more people in their crowd.” From these early beginnings, Prime Circle has consistently impressed their fans and they have performed on stage with a variety of world-class acts, including Incubus, Metallica, Muse, Chris Cornell, Goo Goo Dolls, Annie Lennox, Korn

and 30 Seconds to Mars. The performance that catapulted their career into the fast lane was opening for Live in 2002. “Opening for Live changed our lives. Even though we had been on the radio, it put a face to a name and from there on we became a household name,” says Learmonth. Prime Circle’s new album, All or Nothing, has taken nine months of recording with renowned rock producer Theo Crous at the helm. This album reveals a fresh, more mature sound, yet die-hard Prime Circle fans won’t be disappointed. “It’s the same Prime Circle sound underneath,” says Gomes, and Bisschoff describes the album as “pulsating and energetic, yet emotional.” When asked what his favourite track on the album is, Learmonth responds, “Each song has its place. They are like my kids, I can’t favour one over the

other, or they’ll get jealous.” This new album, released on 23rd June, follows hot on the heels of their new deal with EMI South Africa, an opportunity that could open many doors for the band. With their previous albums, Hello Crazy World and Live this Life both earning gold certification in South Africa, and producing numerous number one hit singles, it is expected that their latest offering will follow suit, and further cement Prime Circle’s place at the top of SA rock. Faithful Prime Circle fans, and new converts, can look forward to a schedule of exciting live shows throughout South Africa over the next few months. For more information go to www.primecircle.co.za. Mountain of many faces Whether you go for the berg or the burg, you are sure to encounter the one thing that has always set this region apart – people of character and charm who will take you to their bosom like a prodigal pal before slaughtering the proverbial fattened calf in your honour. hen you enter the area around the Magaliesberg, pause for a moment of quiet reflection. Glance over your shoulder at the ghosts of those who walked this ground before you. See them regress through the Iron Age and the Stone Age into the antiquity of primitive man. They all breathed this air, hunted here, and probably contemplated the mountain just as you are doing now. This area is widely regarded as having harboured humanity for longer than anywhere else on Earth. This was the home of Mrs Ples,

who was born around 2.7 million years ago. She, and others of her tribe, may have stood exactly where you are standing now. The berg bore witness to them as it now witnesses you. This is, after all, our collective place of birth. The Magaliesberg area is known as The Cradle of Humankind and has been declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Once you are properly imbued with the weight of history, consider the fact that Mrs Ples may in fact have been a Mr, and you will begin to understand that not everything around here is what it seems at first glance. Indeed, some mysteries that reside here may never be solved. There is a great deal of activity underneath the

www.travelstart.co.za region’s apparently sleepy surface. The mountain range is among the oldest in the world. Even Mount Everest is but a babe in arms by comparison, as the Magaliesberg is almost a hundred times as old as Everest. The range forms the natural border between the highveld in the south and the bushveld in the north, stretching over 120 km from Bronkhorstspruit Dam, east of Pretoria, to Rustenburg in the west. It is the section of the Magaliesberg between Hartbeespoort Dam and Magaliesburg that has, in particular, become the playground of depleted urbanites in search of a weekend hidey-hole that is both close to grassroots and populated by real people. Many come for a weekend and are charmed into permanent residency. Maybe of necessity, the area now bustles with entrepreneurship. It has become a hive of creativity and enterprise. So much so that two routes have been developed to signpost the way to an abundance of local artists and talented crafters. Around Hartbeespoort Dam you can follow the Crocodile Ramble and around Magaliesburg the Magalies Meander. A stop-start trip down either of these two routes (or, preferably, both) is likely to yield treasures that are sure to accentuate your inner city penthouse with a breath of fresh country air. Besides, you will be enchanted by the natural beauty, the friendly hospitality and the creativity that the mighty Magaliesberg, like a giant magnet, holds fast around it. With scenery that takes your breath away and people who were seemingly born to effortlessly host

and indulge their guests, it naturally follows that this area has become Gauteng’s wedding venue of choice. Romantic chapels set in lush gardens, facilities that accommodate conferences and confetti with equal grace, and (last but most definitely not least) mouth-watering catering, make for an unforgettable experience. The Magaliesberg area also offers a host of opportunities for adventurers. From leisurely hot air balloon rides over the treetops to more demanding activities like abseiling, quad biking, paint-balling and clay pigeon shooting (to name but a few), visitors to this magnificent mountain area really are spoiled for choice. The jam-packed local events calendar also ensures that the area does not only attract, shall we say, the more ‘mature’ generation. The Magaliesberg area might be heavy with history but it is versatile enough to also be Generation X-compliant! The local tourism office is the ideal source for news and know-how regarding the area. With their help, you are sure to find accommodation and activities to suit both your pocket and your appetite for adventure. Berg, burg, dam, meander or ramble, the mercurial Magaliesberg area is sure to seduce you with at least one of its myriad faces. Magically, the Magaliesberg seems to mould itself around the individual preferences of each of its visitors. Relax, rejuvenate, and rediscover romance. Test your physical limits against a two billion year-old mountain, or drift languidly over the dam in a small boat. The Magaliesberg has many facets and, if you just open your eyes, there is one just for you. >

Madiba Celebrates his 90 th Birthday

On 18th July 1918, Rolihlahla Mandela was born in the village of Mveso, in the heart of the Transkei. This year, South Africa and the world celebrate 90 years of this icon’s existence.

rebel, a prisoner, a leader, and ultimately a symbol of peace and democracy, the 90 years of Madiba’s existence recount the history of our country’s long walk to freedom. As we celebrate his birthday this month, we take a look at what Nelson Mandela has bestowed upon our nation, and indeed humanity as a whole. “Education is the most powerful weapon which you can use to change the world.” Commencing his education at the age

of seven, Rolihlahla Mandela was the first member of his family to attend school. It is said that a teacher who struggled to pronounce Rolihlahla – a name that had the colloquial meaning of “troublemaker” – decided to call him Nelson. After completing his schooling, he attended the tertiary institution of Fort Hare, but was asked to leave following involvement in student protests. Later, to escape an arranged marriage, Mandela fled to Johannesburg, where the politically minded youth proceeded to arm himself with knowledge, skills and qualifications.

Here he completed a Bachelor of Arts degree via correspondence with the University of South Africa, after which he enrolled for legal studies at the University of the Witwatersrand. It was while he was living in the township of Alexandra that he joined his friend Walter Sisulu as a clerk at a law firm. “There is no passion to be found playing small – in settling for a life that is less than the one you are capable of living.” Despite the election of the National Party and its policy of Apartheid in 1948, Nelson Mandela not only refused to accept a system that

undermined the basic human rights of most South Africans, but also chose to actively combat it. Although he initially adopted a non-violent strategy of resistance, Mandela and 150 like-minded others were arrested in 1956 and charged with treason. The trial lasted five years and resulted in the acquittal of all. “When the water starts boiling it is foolish to turn off the heat.” In 1960, a police shoot-out on a gathering of protestors sent shock waves through the nation. The Sharpeville Massacre was met with renewed efforts to overthrow the

increasingly oppressive government, and Nelson Mandela helped to establish the African National Congress’s (ANC) armed faction. The group was called Umkhonto we Sizwe, meaning “Spear of the Nation,” and Mandela became the leader of this assembly in 1961. A year later he was arrested again, and sentenced to five years of imprisonment on Robben Island. “The brave man is not he who does not feel afraid, but he who conquers that fear.” Following the arrest of other ANC leaders, Nelson Mandela was brought

out of prison to attend the trial in 1964. Mandela and his comrades escaped the death sentence, and on 12th June that year, a sentence of life imprisonment was pronounced. “It always seems impossible until it is done.” Nelson Mandela was to spend a total of 27 years in jail, with the majority of his sentence being carried out on Robben Island. Unsuccessful negotiations between Mandela and President PW Botha commenced in 1985. After suffering from a stroke, Botha was replaced by Frederik Willem de Klerk in 1989. Local and international pressure for Mandela’s release became overwhelming, and on 2nd February 1990, De Klerk announced that Mandela was to be freed. “After climbing a great hill, one only finds that there are many more hills to climb.” Mandela’s release saw him resuming leadership of the ANC, and in

1993, Mandela and De Klerk were joint recipients of the Nobel Peace Prize. Despite this victory, there were many obstacles leading up to Mandela becoming South Africa’s first democratically elected president at the age of 75. In addition to challenges facing the young democracy, Mandela’s health was also on the decline. In 1999, Thabo Mbeki succeeded him. “For to be free is not merely to cast off one’s chains, but to live in a way that respects and enhances the freedom of others.” In 1998, on his 80th birthday, Nelson Mandela married Graça Machel. Having largely retreated from the limelight, Madiba’s incredible life story continues to be a source of inspiration that transgresses geographical boundaries and refutes racial classification. Once a fighter, he now enriches our world as a symbol of peace and wisdom. Happy 90th birthday, Madiba! >

“There can be no keener revelation of a society’s soul than the way in which it treats its children,” Nelson Mandela once famously remarked. In accordance with this view, the Nelson Mandela Children’s Fund (NMCF) was established in 1994 by Chairman and Founder, Mr Nelson Mandela. The Fund’s mandate is to address issues that affect children and youth, particularly those living in disadvantaged situations. While the NMCF’s programmes do not claim to offer the ultimate answer to the myriad of challenges facing the South African youth, they operate in key areas where a notable difference is made. The Fund operates within a strategic intent called Sakha Ikusasa, which means “building the future” in Zulu. The Fund addresses four distinct areas, namely the wellbeing of a child, leadership and excellence, skills development, and children and youth with disabilities. The NMCF’s target beneficiaries are children and youth from birth to 22 years of age who come from impoverished backgrounds. For more information, visit www.nmcf.co.za, or email info@nmcf.co.za.

hen British architect Sir Herbert Baker first came to South Africa in 1893, it was supposedly to visit his brother. But soon after his arrival, Cecil John Rhodes asked Baker to remodel his own residence and other buildings. Today, examples of the Englishman’s architectural acumen can be seen all around South Africa. While structures such as The Rhodes Memorial and The Union Buildings are

counted among his more renowned designs, examples of Baker’s finest work can also be found in historic neighbourhoods all around our country. The Andros Boutique Hotel, which can be found in the verdant Cape Town suburb of Claremont, shows just why Baker came top of his class at the Royal Institute of British Architects. Built in 1908, the restoration of the old Cape Dutch homestead compromised none of its original grace and elegance. Rather, the air of oldworldly splendour has been perfectly

preserved to be complemented by the very best in modern conveniences. Eight of the Hotel’s bedroom units are located along the circumference of the garden, with private verandas overlooking its lush tranquillity and the swimming pool. Four more individually decorated bedrooms can be found in the original manor house, and the Hotel’s suite offers the most discerning guest true comfort. Here guests can enjoy the added luxuries of a separate entrance, spacious living area and private swimming pool. Some of Cape Town’s most

treasured tourist attractions are all located within easy reach from The Andros Boutique Hotel. The beautiful Kirstenbosch Botanical Gardens and Constantia Winelands are located near the Hotel, while the V&A Waterfront is a mere 15 minutes’ drive away. Guests may, however, be forgiven for missing out on these sights in favour of spending time relaxing at the Hotel. The beauty salon, appropriately named Bliss, features two treatment rooms where fully-qualified beauty therapists will ensure that guests

unwind completely. Visitors can also relax at the poolside, work out in the well-equipped gym, or simmer down in the sauna. And if it has to be work, the Andros Boutique Hotel can also comfortably host up to 20 delegates in its conference room. Excellent service can be seen in all aspects of one’s stay at The Andros, and the dining room is no exception. The Hotel boasts an intimate 34-seater restaurant, DINE, where white-marbled floors and a selection of South African art create an atmosphere of elegant romance. By

night, the scene is completed by the soft glow of candlelight. Here guests can choose from an à la carte menu that will please all tastes, and a superb selection of fine South African wines. When Sir Herbert Baker designed the original homestead, he must have envisaged that its graceful structures would witness many a blissful moment. And while Sir Baker today has found his final resting place in London’s Westminster Abbey, visitors to the Hotel continue to discover luxury and quiet in its sumptuous structures. >

RoxyLouw B Story by Miles Masterson Pix © Oakley

The daughter of a legendary Springbok rugby player Rob, it was inevitable that Roxy Louw would be well-suited to deal with her own imminent stardom.

eing surrounded by many of South Africa’s top sporting heroes from an early age also meant that Roxy Louw would be adequately prepared for the pressures of her future career as a model. “You grow up with these people, and so everyone is the same, they are all normal to me,” says the 21-year-old blonde-haired, blue-eyed cover girl. Now increasingly famous in her own right, Roxy, the eldest of four siblings, spent many

childhood weekends at the Louw household in the presence of rugby greats such Corné Krige, Braam van Straaten and the Burger and Pienaar families. “They are all friends,” she reveals, “and the way we were brought up is that there are no stars.” Her background, says Roxy, has thus helped her to retain a humble outlook, and not be overawed by anyone in the fashion and entertainment world, where she now works and plays with the country’s A-listers. “Everyone’s got their shining talent, so

we’ve kept it very grounded.” Roxy’s renown also extends to the sporting world. Besides her dad’s achievements, her artist mom Azille is a WP runner, and so it was a given that Roxy would take up physical pursuits. A self-confessed tomboy and adrenalin junkie who still enjoys rubber ducking with Rob, Roxy laughs how she would play rugby and soccer with the boys at her parents’ braais, and dabbled in swimming and squash. Guided, she says, by the imparted knowledge and experience of her extended family

Glendine

Art For The Heart Glendine captures the elusive vastness of the Namib and Karoo with a beautifully balanced use of detailed line work and generous swaths of sky and texture. Her landscapes are inspired by crumbling and deserted homesteads, rusty windmills and dustladen red sunsets. Glendine’s more abstract masterpieces, focusing on chairs and graphic flowers, and more recently a phenomenal study of the female form, are able to communicate an array of emotions, sadness, passion, rage, tenderness… in a nutshell, HEART. To highlight the intimacy of her work the artist often combines images and words to convey a personal image and touch. Her rich colour palette is pure Africa with deep terra cottas, dark greens and yellow that is quite indescribable to a foreigner. Glendine studied fine art and has participated in numerous group and solo exhibitions in South Africa

and was invited for a solo exhibition in New York. Her work adorns homes and embassies in the UK, USA, Australia and South Africa. The fantastic yearly exhibitions to which we have all started to look forward to have mostly been inspired by strong female figures such as Ingrid Jonker, Frida Khalo, and Helene’Martins. As an artist (and as a woman) she has grown by leaps and bounds, and delights us with something new and fascinating every time. It is this quality that has made her one of our country’s top- and most loved, artists. Her love affair with the Karoo has marked her work and her life. Every aspect of it: the noise, the silence, the sun, the stars, the dust, the openness, the endlessness, the colours. It raises an unrivalled passion in her that floods out onto her canvass. The pull of this wonderland has proved irresistible to her, and she has recently relocated to live and work in that haven of inspiration. She has also recently got engaged to Johan, who has proven himself to not only be a soulmate, but an incredidle source of support aswell. This artist has reached the almost unattainable status of the elite few, and joined the pantheon of top South African Artists. This is because of her unique, recognisable style, her massmarket appeal, and the fact that her work is not only decorative, but also understandible. She is exceptionally grateful for her God given talent, and thanks the Lord everyday for his grace by using her ability to paint to inspire and uplift those around her. For Glendine, nothing is more important than this: Using your gifts every day of your life!

network of provincial and Springbok sportsmen, Roxy achieved much success in hockey at her high school, Stellenberg, and later for Western Province. “At night I was still a girly girl though, at functions with my dad,” she adds with a coy smile. However, Roxy’s true sporting passion and raison d’être is surfing. Her dad has always been a keen surfer, and she was introduced to the sport during family camping trips to the Southern Cape holiday town of Stilbaai. “It just came naturally,” she recalls, “and from the first day I took my board out there I didn’t turn back.” Roxy was able to easily transfer her athletic ability from the hockey field to the waves, and ascended quickly through WP surfing’s ranks, posting a number of good results at provincial and national surfing events. Her prowess also secured Roxy a sponsorship from eyewear brand Oakley, which, in a roundabout way, led to her subsequent career in modelling. During a surfing trip to Brazil, a photo of her sitting on the back of a scooter looking at the waves became a popular poster, and Roxy was soon approached by top agency, Outlaw Models. “I got a lucky break,” she beams. Her fame grew last year, when she rescued a group of tourists who had run into trouble in a small boat, in the bay below her parents’ Clifton flat. Roxy humbly explains that any surfer would do the same. “I don’t know what the hype was all about,” she says. “This kind of thing happens all the time in Stilbaai.” Clearly at ease with her growing recognition, Roxy even has a fan club on Facebook, but thankfully hasn’t had to endure any stalkers yet. “I do get guys who, after a few drinks, follow me saying ‘Roxy save me,’ but nothing hectic,” she laughs. “I also get a few weird emails, but I distance

myself from anything too crazy. [It’s important to remember that these] people are the ones that make you, so you’ve got to be good to them.” Currently single, Roxy says she’s happy to be on her own for now; it frees her go on trips to locations such as Brazil, Mozambique, Costa Rica, Bali and, most recently, Mauritius, where she was a celebrity contestant in the Tropika Island of Treasure, among a host of well-known South African stars. “It was great,” Roxy says. “Everyone was so mellow and down to earth.” To invest in her future, Roxy is currently studying event coordination part-time, but adds that before she settles down, she is content to follow her idyllic lifestyle wherever it takes her. “I’ve learned a lot from going to places,” she smiles. “The world is huge, there is so much to explore, [so many] things to do and people to meet.” >

Wine

For The Love Of

Story by Judith Lee Pix Š iStockphoto.com

Self-confessed wine enthusiast, Judith Lee, reflects on her own passion for the heavenly nectar, and then heads for the terroir to gain insight from some of South Africa’s leading winemakers.

W

hen I first started working and earning my own disposable income, I thought the pinnacle of sophistication was eating in a restaurant and ordering a bottle of wine, which would inevitably be sweet and pink. But the day came when the restaurant did not have a sweet wine on its menu. I settled for the waitress’ recommendation, which was neither sweet nor, at first, palatable. However, towards the end of the bottle I realised that the bitter-sweet-sour experience was fascinating; the different nuances enticing me to roll the wine in my mouth.

44

Reservations:

0861 345 345

I wanted to repeat this new experience, and I discovered that when you love wine, each bottle is a new adventure. Since that first wine adventure many years ago, I have tasted many fine wines, and some not-so-fine wines. Often, the doubtful qualities of poorer wines are easily forgiven by politeness, and more often by good company, but the desire to relive the joy of tasting a different wine remains. Personally, I love the individuality of every different bottle and the surprise of how wine is always alive and always complemented by fine surroundings and good conversation. No matter how many fine wines I have enjoyed, I still get excited when a

friend announces the discovery of an interesting wine, asking me to make dinner so that we might judge just how fabulous it is. But just what makes wine so pliable, so susceptible to a good atmosphere and so willing to accommodate its environment? Why is the drinking of every bottle an adventure? The answer probably lies in the complex interaction of terroir, cultivar and vintage which, if it were possible to determine exactly, would give us a predictable wine. Yet, no two wines are the same, and neither are winemakers. Is it possible that the heart and personality of the winemaker could dictate the individuality of his creation? Does the passion of the winemaker shine on the

tongue? Can we say the ethos of an estate is palatable? And what makes a wine unique? I took my questions to the winemakers of the estates represented by the Ultimate Wine Company. For Wynand Grobler of Rickety Bridge, wine making is both art and science. “I don’t want to bend or shape the wine. It should reflect where it comes from, which means that I will interfere as little as possible. Wine making is something you must live and enjoy.” Theuns Botha Waverley Hills Organic Wines has a different take. “I grew up on a wine farm in Stellenbosch and I suppose it has always been part of my culture. But the first wine that made me fell in love

with quality wine was a 1979 Pinotage. It tasted like a strawberry cool drink. I couldn’t believe wine could taste so good. For me, wine must be fruitdriven with soft, ripe tannins. And it must be organic, because you can feel the difference.” Stephan Basson of Babylon’s Peak, the fourth generation to live on a wine farm, has a hands-on approach, and he too believes in keeping the winemaking process natural. “To create unique wines we concentrate on varietals that are really suitable for the terroir. It’s a way of living and enjoying everything that complements wine. Wine making is an art and it is part of my character; I like to create something that I can be proud of.”

Lammershoek’s Albert Ahrens says each bottle, through its encryption of flavour and tannins, forms a part of their identity. “Each sip reminds me of the weather patterns and emotions around that vintage. Winemaking that embraces the difference of each year, respecting the terroir and using a minimalistic winemaking style, will result in a complex and characterful wine. It is the story of my life.” Sean Skibbe of South Hill Vineyards expresses the joy he derives from being a winemaker. “How can one be anything but passionate about a job like this? There are not many professions that can stimulate one in as many ways, with such a wide scope of responsibilities;

w w w .1 t i m e . c o . z a

45

from farming to finance and marketing, with the fascinating and thrilling process of actually making wine sandwiched in the middle.” He continues: “I wouldn’t say the uniqueness of our wines is entirely due to me. I feel very strongly that wine should be an expression of its origin, but this attitude is far from unique. I have no secrets about what I do in the cellar, I’m happy to share with others exactly what I do secure in the knowledge that they will not be able to replicate the South Hill style, simply because they don’t have South Hill grapes. If I were to sum up what I strive for it would be balance and elegance; wines that are rewarding and interesting to savour, not created to wow under competition circumstances.” Marc van Halderen of La Vierge says his inspiration comes from the gratification of being involved in a creative process, where the reward is tangible and brings pleasure to people. “I’m fascinated by cause and effect, being involved in turning grapes into wine and enjoy the art of blending. Of course I love drinking wine, and sometimes I do get a little merry and musical.” Van Halderen continues: “I am proud of the provenance of our wine-growing region, namely Walker Bay, and in particular the Hemel en Aarde Valley. We offer wines with elegance and finesse, and a touch of the cool maritime climate that gently ripens our grapes. I am thrilled to be in this valley and involved in the crafting of, particularly but not exclusively, the noble varieties Pinot Noir, Chardonnay and Sauvignon Blanc.” Van Halderen’s point is compelling, and I cannot help but agree with his reference to Oscar Wilde, who once said: “I’ve taken more from wine, than wine will ever take from me.” Familiarity may be comforting and safe, but adventurers - you and I - must seek the new and unique. If winemakers pour their creative hearts into the wine, the least we can do is drink more imaginatively. >

Therefore the only question we can ask ourselves is “What to do about power outages?” The most commonly thought of solution is to install a fuelpowered generator. Large, Silenced Automatic Genset

Portable Battery Backup Unit

to dedicated circuits by licensed electricians making their use during power outages simple and quick. For those who are determined not to allow power outages to inconvenience them in the slightest, there are larger generator sets capable of running the largest mansion with its security lights, underfloor heating, pool pumps and air conditioners. These generators are mostly configured to start automatically when the mains power is interrupted, and stop automatically when mains power is restored. As an interesting aside, large generators have spawned a whole new industry which provides installation, maintenance and even fuel supply services. Commercial applications are generally more complex and can range from a home office through to a bed and breakfast establishment, service stations and convenience stores or even a private medical practice.

Whatever the commercial application, it is strongly recommended that the services of an expert be employed to measure the electricity consumption patterns of the operation. In this way, the size of the alternative power source can be accurately determined and disasters and losses can be avoided. At a cost of under R2,000 for a professional test, this is money truly well spent as commercial and domestic users alike will benefit from having their electricity consumption patterns accurately measured before buying a genset. Generators to commercial users are available in a wide variety of sizes and configurations, and where these are impractical or not allowed, large capacity battery back-up units can be installed. Another innovation which will be available shortly is the Liquid Petroleum Gas (LPG) driven generator.

This will mean that users that already apply other gas technologies in their homes will soon be able to install auxiliary electric power that uses a common fuel to their other appliances. If you are considering generating your own power, you will also be glad to learn that there are a number of financing options available. Renting an auxiliary generator also makes good business sense. Always obtain expert advice when considering your generator options. Don’t be tempted by vendors offering ridiculously low prices, as their service and quality will no doubt be of the same standard. Only established vendors who can prove they have the spares and service support to assist you in any eventuality should be considered. Tomeaton “What do you do when you’re not writing?” I ask. “What do you do when you’re not interviewing?” responds Tom Eaton. “I do that.”

C

ape Town-based writer, Tom Eaton, is renowned in the South African media for his humour, sharp tongue and biting witticisms. He has penned two popular satirical novels, The De Villiers Code (2005) and Texas (2006) and in February 2008 a work of literary fiction, The Wading. Stuck in a drawer for seven years, this more serious piece is his first novel. And although his fans are familiar with

his humorous style, the comedy has in many ways been a diversion from his initial literary inclinations. As a prolific South African writer, having written hundreds of columns, articles, a couple of books and a screenplay, what would you say is the most rewarding aspect of being a writer? I often remind myself that nobody asked me to be a writer. Writing is self-indulgent, a complete luxury. So I suppose the best part is being answerable to nobody but myself,

and to nothing but my whims. It beats working. And what would you say is the worst part about being a writer? I always answer this the same way: asking me about the worst part of my work is like asking me what the worst part of my last holiday to Eastern Europe was. Well, Romanian television was awful. And Venice was overcrowded. And it was raining in Budapest. But I got to see Romania and Venice and Budapest. I suppose if there is something,

w w w .1 t i m e . c o . z a

55

it’s the look of mild disappointment on people’s faces when you explain what a writer’s life is like, and they discover that it’s like anyone else’s, except with fewer office parties. Did you always know that you wanted to write? Or did you have other ambitions? I wanted to be a teacher like my parents, but they looked up long enough from their piles of marking to give me the “I want to be a stripper” parental response: we love you, and we’ll support you, but we’re not thrilled about your choices. Then I wanted to be “in advertising”. I didn’t know what that meant, but I realised I wasn’t interested enough in fish paste or pimple cream to go that route. Was there any defining moment when you realised you had ‘what it took’ to make a career out of your writing? ‘Writing’ is an extremely broad church, so yes, I suppose I always hoped to make it my trade, simply because it’s the only thing I can do. I don’t think any South African can hope to make a living from writing fiction, but certainly there is enough writing that needs doing to make a living. How did you feel when you first saw one of your books on the shelf in stores? It was pleasing, but the real excitement was about a month before that, when the publisher sent me a dozen advance copies. I was delighted when I got my first copy of The De Villiers Code – my first novel. I think a lot of writers will deny this, but I suspect most react like me: ‘Look how fat it is!’ Thickness rather than quality, that’s what we go for… It’s been reported that you gave up all your journalistic commitments at the beginning

of the year? What motivated this decision? What have you been doing since? I needed a break, to catch up with what was important. I got tired of the sound of my own voice, and my opinions started sounding very tinny and strident. So I’ve taken a break from pontificating, and done some other sorts of writing. I am also co-owner of the local satirical news website Hayibo.com, and that keeps me off the streets. You’re best known for your satirical and humorous style. Recently you published a much more serious work, The Wading. What has the response been to this new work? All I secretly hoped for was one good review from a particular reviewer whose judgement I trust very much. He obliged, and as far as I’m concerned, that’s mission accomplished. What was your motivation for veering away from the style your readers are familiar with? The Wading is actually my first novel. I wrote it in 2001 or 2002, and then it sat in my desk drawer for seven years until I fished it out and gave it a major overhaul. So really all the comic stuff was a veering away. Which style of writing do you enjoy most? It’s not about style. It’s about intensity of focus. I’m happiest with whatever sucks me in the deepest. Usually that’s fiction, but it can happen with anything. >

Cheap And Cheerful Ways To Keep Kids Entertained Raising children these days is no walk in the park. Crime, materialism, packed schedules and strained budgets all conspire to make entertaining our offspring rather complex and expensive.

W

e tend to spend fortunes on outings, educational toys, the latest DVDs and must-have gizmos because we worry about our children’s safety beyond the garden gate – and we’re constantly cajoled into raising young Einsteins for a brave new world. Holidays, long weekends and loose ends can become a nightmare for parents, but happily, there’s plenty of fun stuff to do (virtually for free). Our little ones need to play. It’s biologically and educationally crucial –

and far more important than achieving a glowing academic report. Occupational therapists and parenting experts explain that unstructured and undirected play – called “free play” – is vital for development. Do you remember long afternoons spent hanging from branches or building houses out of cardboard boxes? That’s the type of normal, natural magic that modern children are in danger of losing. So how can you foster this fabulous childhood skill without breaking the bank or fearing for their safety? Explore these ideas to while away the time and give their brains (and bodies) a boost.

Nature is nurture Get them outside! No matter the weather, our natural environment is the world’s greatest classroom – and once you start the ball rolling, kids are rather good at getting on with things alone, giving you a welcome break. Create a season journal: gather together several sturdy, A4 or A5-sized pieces of paper, punch holes at the top, bottom and in the middle, and bind together with string or raffia ribbon. Decorate the front cover. Go for walks, identifying interesting objects (orange leaves in autumn, for example, or budding flowers in spring)

w w w .1 t i m e . c o . z a

59

and then draw and/or write about them afterwards. Be a nosy neighbour: With notebook and pencil in hand, take a stroll around your area, recording street names, number of houses, neighbours’ names, dogs, children and other interesting bits and bobs about where you live. Draw a map afterwards. The great outdoors: Send your kids on a camping trip in the garden. Give them the basics; old pots, plates (tin or plastic), safe, age-appropriate utensils, a blanket, tent or two chairs with a throw or old sheet, worn-out sleeping bags, a couple of toys and food in carrier bags. Give them a basic lesson in camping skills (pitch the tent, make your bed, go exploring, come back and ‘cook’ your food, eat it, sit in a circle, tell stories and then go to ‘bed’). Crafty art Even if they’ve seen it all before, children love paints, pencils, paper and

play dough. Sort out the art cupboard at home and give your Picassos hours of pleasure. The cardboard inners of toilet rolls and paper towels make fantastic instruments, telescopes and festive crackers. Crepe or tissue paper, old newspapers, cardboard boxes, scrap materials, ribbons, glue and plenty of stationery can transform the most dreary day into a delight. Family fun How about some bonding time in your own backyard? Simply doing things differently generates excitement and makes family time fun. Instead of visiting the local take-out for an oily meal and toy, throw a pizza picnic on the lounge floor (in winter) or on the patio or grass (in summer). Pizza bases are easy to make (and even easier to buy). Prepare plenty of healthy toppings and encourage

everyone to build their own supper. Pop pizzas in the oven, slip them onto paper plates and eat on the floor. Brain boosters for the whole family include board games, puzzles, crosswords and books. Fill your home with these – from the most simple card game such as Snap to the hand game, Rock, Paper, Scissors, there’s plenty to learn about teamwork and sharing. Simply silly Are you caught in traffic or waiting in a long queue? Cheap boredom busters that don’t require anything but hands or clothing are a must-know. Try these on for size: • Stack your fists or arms or draw letters on each other’s back and try to guess what it is. • Have staring, “not laughing” and “no talking” contests. • Give invisible manicures and pedicures. • Take turns telling a story, one sentence at a time. • Walk your fingers up and down each other’s backs, pretending to be a spider, horse or goat exploring the rugged terrain. • Use socks as puppets. • Play “I Spy”. • Count your loose change. No frills, no fuss fun is what childhood is all about – and taking the time to get back to basics will give them a lifetime of good memories. >

T

he South Coast is a scuba diver’s paradise. Among its many diving spots, Aliwal Shoal proves to be the most popular, with more than 30,000 dives taking place there annually. Further south lies Protea Banks, considered to be one of the best shark diving spots in the world. The coast also offers one of the best angling areas worldwide. Each year shoals of pilchards migrate this way from the Cape. Nearing KwaZuluNatal, they begin to cuddle the coastline when sea currents bring them closer to shore. Hot on their tails are large numbers of predatory big-game fish, providing wonderful opportunities for anglers. This event is known as the “Sardine Run.” Located only two km south of Margate, you will uncover the spectacular white beaches of Ramsgate that received international “Blue Flag” status. Blue Flag status is only awarded to beaches that achieve excellence in water quality, and adhere to international safety standards. Professional lifeguard services, high levels of cleanliness and the quality of facilities (toilets and showers) are also key criteria. Ramsgate is a quaint village just south of Margate with an excellent bathing beach and safe lagoon. Peaceful picnic facilities in a park-like setting provide a haven from the bustling beach towns. Restaurants, antique shops, art galleries, numerous nature reserves and

crafts shops, as well as a crocodile farm, are among the region’s many attractions. Ski Boat Bay is a popular venue among ski boat enthusiasts. Duzamanzi Sea View Units is nestled in the subtropical forests of Ramsgate, where lush green foliage gives shelter to stunning birdlife. Relax in your own private Jacuzzi while immersing yourself in beautiful scenery at the meeting point of the Bilanhlolo River and the Indian Ocean. These luxury three-bedroom, twobathroom units come fully equipped with granite tops in the kitchen, washing machine, tumble dryer, dishwasher, microwave, 600 litre double door fridge/ freezer, DSTV, DVD player with surround sound, and a lockup garage. Your own private Jacuzzi and a Weber gas-braai on the 30m² balcony are there to make your holiday a unforgettable experience. Investment Options Acquire a week/s during a specific time of the year, and use it every year at Duzamanzi Sea View Units. Prices start from as little as R 25,656, with financing options available. abouTime readers can now make use of this special offer. The second option, Fractional Ownership, implies shared ownership or, in other words, co-owning a holiday home. Fractional ownership offers you the opportunity to buy partial ownership of a quality and substantial holiday home, in a first class resort area. It is the ideal vehicle to acquire a share in something that would otherwise be out of reach.

The property is owned by a private company with a number of shareholders. The number of fractions determines the number of shares. You would therefore be a shareholder of a private company that owns the property outright, and your percentage shareholding in the company will constitute the size of your share in the property. One share gave the investor four seven-day breaks to utilse every year. The use of these periods is set out in a fixed rotation schedule. Segments are divide equally among shareholders, and each shareholder will occupy the home one full year over a 13 year period. This is a cost-effective way of partially owning a holiday home, as you only pay for what you use. Leisure property has become very costly to acquire and maintain, so sharing these costs and benefiting directly from the capital growth makes financial sense. abouTime readers can now purchase fractional ownership at a once-off discounted price of R149,000 for four seven-day breaks per year. As with any other piece of real estate, the owner of abovementioned investment options may use their week, rent their week, leave it to their heirs or exchange their weeks with thousands of other resorts worldwide. Staying

Inside and Out

Winter is that time when vitamins and minerals and thick slathers of body lotion are more often than not ignored when, instead, they should be revered. These lotions and potions, pills and concoctions aid us in keeping our bodies healthy on the inside, and on the outside.

A

s the temperature drops, so the desire increases to put on a Bridget Jones flick, draw the curtains against the cold, and gorge yourself on cookies. In winter, your body takes a beating not only on the inside, but

on the outside too. Colds and flu, sidestepping the office water cooler, forgetting the daily body lotion slathering, and subjecting yourself to the chills of winter will take their toll on your skin – making you quickly outdo King Tutankhamen in the bleached parchment department. But fear not, there is hope for

your ailing epidermis and your static spirals, as there is for your dwindling immunity. Ensure you get enough of the following: vitamin C and betacarotene, vitamin A, zinc, Echinacea, and omega 3, 6 and 9. You should also aim to ingest at least a little garlic, and some pre and pro-biotic

cultures (found in good yoghurt). Most of these can be found in fresh fruits and veggies; though supplementing your diet is not a bad idea. A few obvious culprits cause winter health woes: cold air outside and overheated air inside. Paired together, this diabolical duo strips the moisture from your skin and hair in no time. But you can fight back. To look after your skin, wear natural fabrics such as cotton or blends; take warm showers, rather than hot to avoid too much moisture loss; and always use body lotion or light oil after bathing. If your hands and feet need a little help, try an antibacterial ointment to repair the cracked skin. For your face, investing in a good regime won’t go unnoticed. The best products for your skin combine a mix of elements from three categories – humectants, occlusives and emollients. Glycerin is a great humectant, petrolatum (the kind found in Vaseline) is a fantastic occlusive, and lanolin and mineral oil are the most commonly used emollients. For sensitive skin, switch from soap to a gentle crème-based

cleanser, and avoid fragranced facial products that further irritate the skin. Water is also a crucial element to a healthy flow and a healthy glow. Maintaining your liquid intake helps your body rid itself of built-up toxins, and gives your skin a fit-and-fighting pink hue. With the cold of winter also comes the destruction of the hairdo. It’s likely you’ve noticed the change in its tangled temperament, so ensure you go to extra lengths to protect your locks. Get a trim, as dryness starts at the ends, not the roots. Try not to wash your hair too often, as this strips moisture. Leave-in conditioners also help keep in moisture, as do occasional moisture masks or hot oil treatments. Your diet also has an immediate effect on your hair, so a healthy, balanced eating plan is important. Be proactive about caring for your body this winter, from head to toe, inside and out. If you do all of the above and still end up achy, red and rough around the edges, perhaps the aforementioned Bridget Jones flick is as good a pick-me-up as any. >

The Hawksbill Turtle

Story & Pix © Stuart Philpott

W

hen I reached the turtle, it had already stopped laying its eggs. The group walked away laughing and joking, oblivious to the consequences of their disturbance. They had no idea that this was a Hawksbill Turtle (Eretmochelys Imbricata), a critically endangered species. After their departure, I watched the turtle from a safe distance. Some tree vines had become entwined around its flipper-like limbs. The turtle was getting more distressed as it tried to break free. The old adage “You shouldn’t interfere with nature” crossed my mind, but I couldn’t just sit and watch the creature suffer. Once freed, the young female shuffled down the beach towards her safe haven, the sea. For more than 20 years I have

been diving with these awesome sea creatures, virtually ignorant of their plight. Now, this one act of gross ignorance had hit me like a sledgehammer. It’s a scientific fact that critically endangered species are unlikely to survive. Maybe it will be 10 years, maybe 20 years, maybe longer, but the outcome is inevitable; one day the Hawksbill Turtle will cease to exist in our oceans. The IUCN Red List is the bestknown worldwide conservation status and ranking system. It states that out of the seven species of turtle, three are critically endangered, and the other four are listed as either threatened or endangered. The critically endangered classification is not just based on the number of animals remaining in the wild. It also incorporates other factors, including the increase and decrease in population size over time, breeding success rates, and known threats.

The next step down the ladder for any critically endangered species is permanent extinction in the wild. It takes around 30 years for a female Hawksbill Turtle to reach maturity. The adult females normally return to the same beach of their own hatching. Turtles are thought to be highly sensitive to the Earth’s magnetic field, and take a magnetic imprint from the beach where they once broke out of their shells. The harsh reality for turtles is that prime beach frontage is the obvious location for any luxury holiday development. But these creatures cannot just switch off or change what was inbred at birth. They will inevitably return to the same beach; resort or no resort. Mature Hawksbills lay their eggs every two to four years, and make four to seven nests per season. They normally return to the beaches at

Ten pairs of eyes stared down at the struggling animal. “Oh, it’s a turtle” I heard one of them say. By the time I appeared on the scene the damage had already been done.

night when it is cooler, but there are also regular sightings during daytime hours. Their telltale shuffling sand tracks are easily recognisable. Nesting sea turtles will usually select a spot that is protected by palms or some other kind of vegetation. Using their hind flippers, the mature females will dig a circular hole 40 cm to 50 cm deep. Once the hole has been dug, the female will deposit around 150 to 200 eggs. These are covered with loose sand that is then flattened and smoothed to make it look untouched. The whole process lasts from 30 minutes to an hour. It then takes around two months to incubate the eggs, although the length of this period can be affected by the temperature of the sand. The eggs usually hatch at night. Baby turtles always head for the brightest light on the horizon, which is normally the moon. These days, however, artificial ground lights surrounding luxury resorts cause confusion. Thousands of hatchlings head in the wrong direction and are either burnt alive, or die of dehydration on the hot lights. Some hotels have set up a regular ‘turtle watch’ patrol during the main nesting season. When a female is spotted laying eggs, a protective wooden box is placed over the site. This stops anyone from accidentally treading on the eggs, and there is only one exit for the baby turtles, facing towards the sea. Other hotels turn the ground lights off at night when the eggs start hatching. Everyone needs to do their bit, as less than 1% make it to maturity. Mature turtles may grow up to a metre in length, and weigh more than 100 kg, and they can live for 80 years. There are also other factors affecting the Hawksbills’ existence. The black market trade in shells, eggs and meat is still a thriving industry, especially in Japan and China. Global warming is yet another major threat. The sex of a turtle is defined by the temperature of the sand surrounding the developing eggs, and there are fears that a rising temperature would produce predominantly male turtles. Long lining and fishing nets are also being blamed for causing hundreds of accidental ‘by-catch’ deaths each year. Turtles have been around for tens of millions of years. In mythology man sees the turtle as a symbol of good fortune, wellbeing and longevity, but ironically it is man himself who now threatens the very existence of the symbol he once worshipped.Theturtle’s plight is well known aroundthe world. There are many governments, organisations and volunteer groups taking active measures to save the Hawksbill. It will be a sad day when there are no more turtles left in the ocean, and we can only hope their plight won’t be another case of help being ‘too little too late’. >

A Hidden Gem

Parys is located a mere two hours from Johannesburg, and is a true South African gem. This quaint little town is situated along the meandering Vaal River and is the gateway to the Vredefort Dome, the largest meteorite impact crater on our planet.

O

nce a sleepy dorpie, Parys is becoming increasingly popular as an ideal place for a weekend getaway. The town is known as an “antique hub” and has a vast array of entertainment options, which include white water rafting, abseiling, 4x4 trails and wildlife adventures, as well as coffee shops, antique stores and fashion boutiques. Parys is also home to the beautiful Parys Golf & Country Estate. This inimitable golf estate is situated partially on the banks of the Vaal, and on an island in the centre of the river. The estate has undergone a complete redevelopment over the last few

years, transforming it into a stunning country estate, with a quiet, relaxing atmosphere, a variety of wildlife, access to a vast area of “skiable” water on the Vaal, and a championship golf course. One of the developments that is currently underway at Parys Golf & Country Estate is Meerkat Manor Lodges and Guesthouse. If you would like to own your very own piece of paradise, then this is certainly your chance to do so. Hannes Muller, popular South African actor and director, and one of the developers of Meerkat Manor, spoke to abouTime about this lucrative project: What exactly is Meerkat Manor? “Meerkat Manor is a two-phase development on the Parys Golf &

Country Estate. The first phase consists of four fractional ownership lodges. This is an opportunity for people to own a part of this beautiful place for very little. What often happens is that people buy a holiday home, and use it perhaps once or twice a year. Here you can buy 10% ownership and can use the house for up to four weeks a year. Each four-bedroom, four-bathroom lodge has a beautiful view, and what is unique about it, is that a golf cart and a ski boat are included in the membership.” What is there on offer at Parys Golf & Country Estate? “The area is in the Vredefort Dome, a World Heritage Site. What I really love about the estate is the open water, where residents can use skiboats and

waterski. There is also a weir, which lends itself to highly exciting white water rafting. Added to this is the opportunity for fishing, a great mountain bike course as well as a vast variety of wildlife. We have also entered into a partnership with Twin Boats, which will be offering residents a unique combination of golf and boating.” Why did you decide to get involved with this development? “I fell in love with the place. I have been a member of the Parys golf course all my life and I was very angry when it was sold for development. But when I walked onto the estate for the first time, I really had to swallow my words; I adored everything about it. The development is spacious and does not intrude on the openness and

beauty of the golf course, or the area, at all. The championship golf course has wonderful, undulating greens and brings the river in as a feature all the time. It’s a brilliant design and has a park-land feel.” What else is on the cards? “Phase two is the Meerkat Manor Guesthouse, which combines golf and boating. This is going to be a luxury lodge on the river, with a boat for guests to use. All 12 rooms will have views onto the dam and river. We also have amazing plans for a floating restaurant. The idea is to get the best restaurateurs and chefs to run the restaurant for a week or a month each, so that you can experience the best Japanese sushi one month and perhaps Reuben’s restaurant the next.”

What would you say is the best aspect of this development? “This is a total leisure package. It’s close enough to drive and far away enough that you can’t hear any noise. It’s a leisure lifestyle estate that offers wildlife, mountain biking, a champion golf course, water skiing, a white water area, fly fishing, and tennis courts, all in one spot. It’s fantastic to play on the course and hear no traffic. Your biggest irritation is that a monkey might steal your ball – and that kind of irritation I can live with. I can’t think of anything better.” For more information, contact Engel & Volkers at +27 12 460 7775.

learn, and to teach what they had learnt. That simple wish to see the world is not dead, despite the fact that the road we take may well have been taken before. Like baby birds jumping from nests, or cheetah cubs beginning to learn to fend for themselves, we, as a country, are spreading our wings and sharpening our claws on new experiences. We’re a burgeoning country: young and still growing. Like all things green or wet behind the ears, we’re cocky and self-assured and ready for anything. The reasons for so many South Africans leaving our shores to see what the world has to offer are many. One reason is that need to see what’s out there: whether that proverbial grass really is greener. We may go to find out more about and test ourselves, whether on a spiritual or business front. Foreign currency is another big draw card. Our hearty upbringing, smartness and savvy help make us potential big money-earners on the global stage. But those kinds of concerns aside, there is always the simple joy of travel. Lao Tzu said “A good traveller has no fixed plans and is not intent on arriving”, and he may well have had a point. The Internet and super-fast communications media have made the world a smaller place, but it’s still pretty big from the point of view of the individual. A good reason to pick your life up and move it elsewhere is simply because you can. It’s our prerogative to choose where we want to spend our time, develop our lives and settle ourselves. And now, like no other time in history, we can exercise that privilege to its fullest extent. The world could only be a better place if words and phrases like lekker, pashash, aweh, mnandi and yebo were spread far and wide. So, whether we leave here to gain money, knowledge or experience, and return to bring what we’ve learnt or gained home, or we leave to settle in some far-off, or not-so-far-off place, and bring that unique, innate, indescribable “South Africanness” to the rest of the world, we are forging new pathways, new highways and byways, and the world is a better place for it. To all those people of any age planning to test their feet in new foreign waters, or any who might be sampling South Africa’s spectacular shores for the first time, I wish you a very happy journey. >

snapping Happy E a s y Wa y s To I m p r o v e Yo u r P h o t o g r a p h y

Photography – equal parts art and science – is one of the only ways we have of capturing our memories before they settle down in the dusty recesses of our minds. It’s worth it, then, to spend a little time understanding the basics of taking good pictures.

O

ne of the most amazing aspects of photography is that, with some flair and some luck, even the novice photographer can take brilliant pictures. Photography is one of the few disciplines where you can achieve amazing results, even when you break all the rules. When traced back to its Greek origins, the word photography literally means “painting with light,” and understanding that photography is, indeed, all

about light, is the first step to taking great pictures. Humans are able to perceive things because of the light that reflects off objects, and it is this reflected light that our cameras record. By understanding the way your camera captures light, you can start to control and manipulate the appearance of your photographs. To cover even one aspect of photography can fill huge tomes, so what follows are some fuss-free tips to help you capture your memories, the way you experience them. Luscious Landscapes Have you ever wondered why that

breathtaking view of the mountains didn’t come out the way you remembered it? If the colours seemed dull and the landscape appeared all washed out, you probably took the picture at midday. To get striking colours in your landscapes, wake up before the sun rises, or wait until the sun starts to set. During these hours things will be lit up most beautifully, making for deep, vibrant colours. Read Your Manual Film is fast becoming obsolete, and the advent of the digital age has made it much easier to hone one’s photographic skills. It is important, however, to

w w w .1 t i m e . c o . z a

85

understand what your camera can do, and the easiest way to do this is to read the manual. Find out what every icon on your camera means and what all the modes are for. If you don’t understand something, look it up on the Internet, ask a photographer friend, or consult someone in a photographic store. Perfect Portraits So you’re having a great time outdoors, but the sweltering sun overhead is casting ugly shadows on people’s faces. Luckily, there is an easy solution; flash. Many people might be confused about using flash in broad daylight, but fill-in flash is about the most flattering way of taking pics of people in sunny conditions, as it gently blasts away shadows and evens out skin tones. If your camera has an automatic fill-in flash function, use that. Otherwise you can create the same effect manually by underexposing a bit, and activating the flash on your camera. Experiment Are you not sure what that white balance setting on your camera does, or you don’t quite know what it means when it says the camera is in spot metering mode? Snap away, change the settings, snap away some more and then compare the results. This is one of the best ways of learning and, thanks to digital photography, need no longer be an expensive business. Keep Your Eyes Open Although we don’t always realise it, we tend to observe the world in from a very specific perspective. Use your camera to reveal things from a different vantage point. Instead of taking a picture of a subject straight-on, try photographing it up close, from below, or as seen from above.

Remember that striking photography is often the result of strong visual effects, so keep your eyes open for shapes that repeat themselves, interesting textures and colours that complement each other. Take Millions of Photos When we look at famous images, we tend to see them in isolation and we assume that the photographer was able to see the right moment, and snap the picture at just the right time. Most of the time, however, this is not the case. Usually, the perfect picture is preceded and followed by at a multitude of less-than-ideal images. When it comes to photography, practice definitely does make perfect. Stay Composed Most amateur photographers make the same mistake when taking pictures of people; they cut off details, such as hands or feet, and include a whole lot of unnecessary space at the top. This tip is very simple, yet it will make a big difference; look before you take a picture. In the second before your shutter clicks, consider just how the frame is filled, and be aware of what you include in the picture and what you exclude. Try composing your pictures differently; tilt your camera, position your main subject off-centre, or ask your subject to pose in an unusual way. Taking good pictures requires a subtle mind-shift. Instead of trying to capture what you are looking at, rather focus on how it appears. Luckily, modern media offer enthusiasts a wealth of practical, user-friendly material, making it very easy to keep learning about photography. And, should you discover a true passion for taking pictures, the sky is veritably the limit.>

Wedding Bells Story by The Thornybush Collection Pic © Steve Wagner

I n T he B ush

Edith Venter And Johnny Schwartz Tie The Knot South African starlet Edith Venter chose Thornybush Game Lodge as the perfect venue for her perfect day. The long weekend in June saw her and businessman Johnny Schwartz host a fairytale wedding, which was attended by 200 guests.

W

ell-loved South African celebrity Edith Venter invited over 200 A-list guests to what has been called the event of the year. Many of the guests were accommodated in the six lodges within The Thornybush Collection. Most of the guests spent between two and four days enjoying the peace and quiet of the bush and, of course, partaking in the wedding festivities. The event started with a welcome bush cocktail function, hosted by Thornybush Collection Chief Executive, Nic Griffin. “This was a challenging undertaking,“ said Nic. “We have never before had a function at the Main Lodge for more than 70 guests, but it was difficult for Edith & Johnny to restrict the number of invitees. The Thornybush team certainly rose to the opportunity to give them all a couple

of days of great interaction.” The riverbed cocktail function saw guests transported from several points in the Thornybush Nature Reserve to converge at an enchanting location on the dry Monwana riverbed, which was magically illuminated with lanterns in the trees and open fires, allowing for merriment, eating and drinking. The course of the festivities saw guests consume over 170 bottles of champagne over the three days. Sunday marked the actual wedding day. All guests were again shuttled in 17 open-air vehicles to a speciallyprepared location in the bush. This set the scene for the ceremony, which took place in the late afternoon sun of a perfect autumn day. From this ‘church in the bush’ exchange of vows and rings, the couple lead a cavalcade of open LandRovers to the reception at Thornybush Game Lodge. Seated on the lower deck, an eagerly anticipated evening of wedding celebrations was

kicked off with a truly spectacular banquet, as the sun set on a glorious evening. Leanne Mannas from Morning Live lead the evening’s programme, and family and friends partied until the early hours of Monday morning which was, thankfully, a public holiday. Johnny and Edith proved to be fine hosts, clearly in love and certain that a wedding in such a unique location would guarantee cherished memories for themselves and their guests, for years to come. The happy couple were guests of The Thornybush Collection’s five-star Shumbalala Lodge, and retired late to the Presidential Suite, 15 minutes’ drive from the celebrations. The couple left the next day for their honeymoon in the warm sun and sea of Croatia, with newly created memories of enjoyment guaranteed to linger in their thoughts for a long time to come. >

Rock `n Yaris Toyota have released a special edition model of its popular Yaris, the RF (Rockford Fosgate). While it is a rocking roller with pumping sound, the RF remains a small hatch at heart.

T

he Toyota Yaris has proven itself over and over in the competitive small hatchback market. In terms of sales numbers, even in current tough market conditions, the car sells well. Now, the limited edition RF derivative of the Yaris T3+ also offers more decibels per minute than any other car in this segment, but struggles to be more than a stock standard performer, as it offers the same 1.3-litre, 4-cylinder powerplant of other models. While one can appreciate the superior sound system, the Yaris still suffers from the same problems as its quieter cousins. Chief among these is the challenge of loading any combination of adult passengers and luggage into your Yaris at the same time.

92

Reservations:

0861 345 345

Other upgrades for the R149,532 price of the RF include the luxury of high-quality leather seats, a rear spoiler, a chromed tailpipe and special RF badging. Add the 15-inch alloy rims and embroidered carpets, and you have a special little car that stands out from the crowd. However, the Pièce de résistance is in the sound system. The radio and CD player sport an added amplifier, two upgraded speakers and a sub-woofer. The rest of the car is standard T3+ with electric power steering, power mirrors and windows, air conditioning, central locking, anti-lock brakes (ABS) and two front airbags. Selling at an average level of some 2,000 units per month, it is easy to understand that the motoring public have taken the Yaris to their hearts (in either hatchback of sedan configuration).

Story by Bernard K Hellberg Pic © Quickpic

It remains an excellent little car with great reliability. During the test period the Yaris demonstrated all the good Toyota qualities such as well-spaced gears, a willing and smooth engine and friendly ergonomics. In other words, you always know where to find the relevant switches and controls. Cornering at speed was safe and predictable, but there was a slightly vague and wandering feeling when travelling at speed in a straight line. Other advantages for the prospective owner buying into the peace of mind of the Toyota brand include a 3-year/100,000 km warranty, and a 4-year/60,000 km service plan. The verdict: the limited edition RF is a good buy if you absolutely must have superior sound, and are willing to trade it off against the standard performance of so many other Yarises’. >

A Swift Success

Suzuki Returns to South Africa

Most of us have fond memories of our first car – a first Beetle, a first Mini, or for the lucky few, a first Suzuki Jeep. However, for the past number of years, the Suzuki brand has been playing second fiddle to other brands in the GM stable.

T

he iconic Suzuki Jeeps of the 1980s and 1990s – the SJ110 and SJ113 – were legendary vehicles to own and drive. While they weren’t the fastest or, necessarily, the most comfortable wheels around, they were mechanically reliable and almost impossible to break. With a high overall ground clearance and lightweight, short wheel-base design, the SJs were renowned for often coming to the rescue of larger, more sophisticated 4x4s in tough off-road conditions. The good news (or bad news for its rivals) is that Suzuki has not only returned to our country, but has entered the B-segment of the passenger car market with two brilliant new offerings. While both derivatives match market rivals in terms of quality, they concurrently offer a dramatic price advantage over other small hatchbacks. Living up to its name with a muscular stance that is emphasised by the pronounced shoulders, and a trademark

wraparound windscreen that resembles the shape of a helmet visor, the Suzuki Swift is an athletic performer. Where the majority of its competitors feature 1.3 or 1.4-litre engines, the Swift’s larger 1,490 cc unit ensures that its performance characteristics are just as noteworthy as its styling, with outputs of 74 kW at 6,000 r/min and 133 Nm of torque at 4,000 r/min. The responsive 1.5-litre multi-point fuel-injected engine boasts variable valve timing (VVT) to optimise the unit’s power and torque delivery, particularly at low to midrange engine speeds. While delivering ample power, the Swift remains extremely fuelefficient, with an impressive fuel consumption figure of just 6.1 l/100 km in the combined cycle. Frugal fuel use underscores the car’s efficiency and allows a useful range on the 43-litre fuel tank. There’s no compromise when it comes to safety either, as the Swift boasts an

impressive level of standard features and a proven track record. A four-star Euro NCAP rating places it up there with the best. Driver and passenger front airbags are standard, with additional side and curtain airbags on the high-spec GLS models, along with ABS brakes and the latest electronic brake force distribution (EBD) and Brake Assist systems. The very capable Swift offers exceptional value for money, with a remarkable level of standard luxury and convenience features matched to a convincing price tag – starting at R116,900 for the 1.5 GL, and extending to R131,900 for the high-specification 1.5 GLS, or R144, 900 for the four-speed automatic version. The Suzuki warranty is good for 3 years or 100,000 km. A four-year/60,000 km service plan takes care of the parts and labour costs associated with routine servicing. This even includes engine, transmission and differential oils, filters, spark plus, all fluid replacements and accessory belts. >

Big in Japan

…And Lekker Local

The highly anticipated, new generation Subaru Impreza STI has finally exploded onto the local automotive scene. This, the newest edition to Fuji Heavy Industries of Japan’s motor vehicle collection, sports a complete makeover in design, chassis and features, bringing what’s big in

A

Japan to local shores. s far as the vehicle’s curvaceous new look is concerned, the Subaru Impreza STI sports a wider body and streamlined, high-quality finish interior. The flared exterior design has taken into account the modern trend for high performance looks, and a delightfully cheeky and daring rear spoiler guarantees a significant decrease in wind resistance. Drawing on their knowledge of aerodynamic principals, Fuji Heavy Industries has revolutionised the look with an aerodynamically curved form, from the front bumper to rear fender, which maximises down force. This directly results in greater vehicle stability at top speeds as well as a provocatively elegant look. None of the engine features that make the much-favoured Subaru Impreza STI so sought after have been lost. Rather, this daring new model

96

sees an improvement that promises to maximize performance and driving pleasure, thanks to Subaru’s constant All-Wheel Drive system and symmetrical drivetrain. This powerhouse of a vehicle produces 221 kW of power at 6,000 r/min, and 407 Nm of torque at 4,000 r/min; combining the best in performance with the best in handling. Symmetrical All-Wheel Drive complemented by a horizontallyopposed Boxer engine remains at the heart of the STI, but for the first time it is clothed in the five-door hatchback body shell of the latest Impreza WRX. This, however, is more or less where the similarities end. Everything, from the engine and sheet metal to the wheels and centre differential – and even the gearbox and brakes – has been heavily revised. In terms of bodywork, these derivatives share only the front doors, bonnet and tailgate. The STI offers rock-solid Japanese build quality, and safety of the

highest standards. Like other current generation Impreza models, the STI boasts six airbags (front, side and curtain), ISOFIX child seat attachment points and pre-tensioners, and load limiters on the front seatbelts and the rear outer belts. For the first time, the STI also adds Vehicle Dynamics Controls (VDC) to the equation – precisely configured especially for this specific application. In this guise it has three settings, unlike the on/off positions that are fitted to other Subarus. The new generation Impreza STI’s arrival in Southern Africa is one of note. Synergising power, control and safety, all packaged in one sexy and oh-so-sporty body, this vehicle is bound to get you talking. The Subaru Impreza STI’s recommended price of R489,000 includes a 3-year / 100,000 km warranty and a 3-year / 63,000 km maintenance plan. >

Give Yourself a Goal

Do Your Bit For The Earth’s Lungs www.therainforestsite.com Have you ever accidentally printed out 91 copies instead of 19, experienced a brief twinge of guilt, and then forgotten the entire scenario ten minutes later? Now you can instantly compensate for your outrageous office behaviour, and make up for some bad tree-karma. By going to The Rainforest Site you can support projects that help to protect endangered rainforests, simply by clicking away. All you have to do is open the main page, locate the large green “Click Here to Give – It’s Free” button, and tap your mouse. The website asserts that since The Rainforest Site began in 2000, they have funded the protection and preservation of more than 41,000 acres of rainforest habitat. Considering that a mere mindless finger movement is all it takes, we should all make a habit of helping the planet to help us, by clicking our support every day.

Movies such as recent release, The Bucket List, may have inspired many of us to consider what we really want out of life. And while few of us are likely to start scribbling down lists of goals, it isn’t a bad idea to keep track of those things we still want to achieve. 43things.com allows users to do just that. Encouraging you to compile a “Life List,” the website also lets members share goals and cheer each other on. Some of the broad categories of goals include topics such as Travel, Work and Career, Money and Wealth, and Health. Browsing through popular goals is a good indicator of the common desires that bind people together, and in many cases even a good way of gauging what might be missing in our modern lifestyles. Popular goals include the desire to lose weight, to fall in love, to take a road-trip to a random destination, to stop procrastinating and, simply, to be happy. Another interesting result of browsing through other people’s lists of goals is that it might just remind you of some of your own longforgotten dreams. For most of us, normal living means spending the greater part of our days working away, without sparing much thought for the ideas and ideals that give us joy and keep us feeling alive. A list of goals is a great way to stay inspired, and to remind us that we have to shape our own destinies.

Don Your Chef ’s Hat – www.bbc.co.uk/food British food used to take bland, tasteless cooking to new heights. During the last couple of decades, however, a tasterevolution has swept across the United Kingdom, with chefs turned into celebrities and cooking shows competing with soap operas for prime-time TV. At the heart of this taste-bud transformation is the BBC’s dedication to all things delectable, and their food website is no exception. Visually appealing and user-friendly, the site is infectiously enthusiastic about the art and science of producing yummy fare. Perhaps the best thing about the site is that, although it gives superstar status to the preparation of fine cuisine, it is crammed full of practical info that the man on the street will find easy to use. South African visitors won’t experience the full benefit of the site’s effort to stay updated with what the current season has to offer, given that we are hemispheres apart. Nevertheless, anyone

who suffers from chef’s block will find the site useful. The quick recipe search allows you to enter up to three ingredients or the name of a recipe, while the ‘How To’ section takes budding chefs back to basics. The recipe section allows one to search according to a particular ingredient (chicken or beef?) and also has an ‘Inspire Me!’ function, where you allow the site to randomly choose a starter, main dish or dessert for you. Their ‘Swift Suppers’ section is bound to give you many quick dinner ideas, and vegetarians will be glad to see that they too are catered for. Bon appétit!

Selecting a floor covering is one of the most important decisions you’ll make when building or renovating. Will it be wood, tile, or carpet? The myriad of options can be daunting. But what if a new and innovative floor covering system could give you all the benefits, plus more style,

Offering unlimited and unrivalled design possibilities, Quartz Carpet, is the next generation of entirely natural floor covering. It is created by combining natural imported glacial aggregates, and clear epoxy and polyurethane resins. While the glacial aggregates maintain their natural angular appearance,

they have lost their sharp edges from tumbling down glacial rivers, resulting in a luxurious “soft” sensation underfoot. The exquisite interior and exterior Quartz Carpet floor finishes are available with an open or closed-pore structure, three aggregate sizes, 34 colour shades, 100s of colour combinations, and even a gloss or satin finish. The result is an unrivalled quality appearance that is not only durable, but also beautiful to look at.

Being 92% natural, the Quartz Carpet is one of the most eco-friendly flooring solutions around. Other than its obvious natural beauty, Quartz Carpet offers incredible low maintenance. Completely scratch resistant, its MOH (measurement of hardness) rating sits comfortably at 8,

not far from the diamond rating of 10. UV stable and stain resistant, Quartz Carpet is equally suitable to outside areas, and microbial tests show that it can even be applied in wet areas such as swimming pool surrounds, aquatic centres and saunas. Quartz Carpet is even fire retardant, and will prohibit a fire from spreading to other areas. Owing to its versatility and strength, Quartz Carpet is also the ideal flooring system for the retail environment. And, Quartz Carpet is endorsed by the American Disability Association for use on walkways and ramps as it is slip resistant. To clean, simply use a wet and dry vacuum cleaner once a month to ensure that the floor will always look brand new. Cupid Strikes on 1time Flights

A

lthough February is traditionally seen as the month of love, 1time Airline experienced its own love fest in the month of June, with no less than three couples getting engaged on board.

120

Reservations:

0861 345 345

One of these couples was Rob Allin and Diveanne de Kock. Rob had been planning the engagement for some time, and thought that the perfect way to surprise his wife-to-be would be on board her 1time flight to Cape Town. Rob proceeded to do exactly that on 5th June. Enlisting the assistance of cabin

crew, Rob even managed to get onto the plane without Diveanne seeing him. 1time Airline is very happy to report that the dazzled Diveanne did say yes! 1time Airline would to congratulate all their newly-engaged passengers this month. We wish you all the happiness in the world! >
