Hearing the opinions and thoughts of our guests greatly assists us in improving and growing and I look forward to receiving your constructive feedback on the lounges
So much has happened for Bidvest Premier Lounge that is already feels as though months and months have gone by since the last issue of Premier. From early in February, you may have noticed that all of our lounge staff members are sporting brand new uniforms. This smart new look coincides perfectly with the completion of customer service training which was initiated last year. We will also be reviewing and “tweeking our food and beverage delivery over the next few months to ensure that the freshest, and tastiest goods are available. This new look as well as the training and the revised menu all benefit you, our valued guest, and form part of our constant endeavour to bring you the highest levels of service and quality each time you visit the lounge. Hearing the opinions and thoughts of our guests greatly assists us in improving and growing and I look forward to receiving your constructive feedback on the lounges either through our website www.bidvestlounge.co.za, our call centre 0861243247 or via the Bidvest Premier Lounge Facebook page. In addition to the above improvements, I am proud to announce two significant achievements made by Bidvest Premier Lounge recently. Firstly, my sincere gratitude goes out to everyone who took part and/or contributed to the PinkDrive fundraising initiative that took place in December. We managed to raise a grand total of R5,708.00 for this worthy cause. The donation will make a huge difference for their mobile testing units that go into communities around SA spreading awareness and offering free testing for Breast and Prostate Cancer. The second achievement that I would like to mention is the fact that Bidvest Premier Lounge has recently been audited and was awarded a BBBEE Level 4 status through Empowerdex. This is a great achievement and speaks volumes of our commitment to equality and the provision of uplifting opportunities to all. For those who frequent our Cape Town International Lounge an important announcement must be made. Both Etihad and Malaysia Airlines have reviewed their flight schedules and will no longer be flying into Cape Town. Until next time, see you in the lounge. Gavin

editor's letter commitment might be a concept playing on everyone’s mind. And if it is not – it should be.
“Pain is temporary. Quitting lasts forever” Lance Armstrong Commitment. It’s a strong word that seems to be running out of steam. I recently turned to one or two gossip rags after a particularly gruelling day – make that a particularly gruelling week! I was looking for something easy to read, something that would not require more than the most basic of brain functionality. What I ended up getting was some food for thought. Every page I turned told tales of infidelity and divorce. I guess that famed statistic of two in three marriages ending in divorce is sadly true and I found myself asking “whatever happened to commitment?” Celebs and public figures blithely announce divorce alongside new endorsement deals or upcoming film premiers – hardly in the same category. It feels as though people have forgotten what it means to make a lifelong commitment, to make a vow where you promise to be there for that person for better or worse. Looks like people are having a whole lot of the “worse” and don’t know where to turn to find the “better”. When the tough times come around, those in the know use them to make their relationships stronger instead of allowing their problems to drive a wedge between themselves and their loved ones. When the passion fades, and that loving feeling seems to have taken a dip, those in the know fight for their commitment and do whatever it takes to get the fire back. These struggles are hard, as you are constantly battling the strong force of human nature. But – if you can fight it and win, your reward is a relationship that is simply super-human. This applies not only to marriage but to all facets of life in which we find ourselves failing ourselves, our loved ones, our goals or our obligations. As we enter the second month of 2012, commitment might be a concept playing on everyone’s mind. And if it is not – it should be. We are all in the process of finding out what will happen to those eagerly made and embarked on New Year’s resolutions and many of us may already be starting to notice that the commitment we made may be too onerous to bear. Commonly the start of a new year also sees many people heading towards other new beginnings – new jobs, new houses and even possibly engagements. Our ability to stand by these commitments and to follow through with our plans symbolises our attitudes to ourselves and to the world around us. Do your best to follow through – no one wants to be a quitter! Nicola

Dear Gavin I trust you are well. I would like to commend TK on the excellent and outstanding service I received from him yesterday afternoon at your Premier Lounge at the King Shaka International Airport in Durban and also to you for your efforts. Because of his great service I have built a lasting and long term rewarding relationship not just with TK and you but with the airline. Because of this, going forward, I am only going to fly 1time airlines from now on. You guys are an asset to your company and I hope that your sincere efforts are recognised. My next booking on 1time is for the end of January for my birthday. Once again – Thank You. Take care and see you soon. Gregory Mariemuthoo Dear Gavin I am writing to you to compliment your staff at the Premier Lounge. My husband and I were unfortunate enough to have a very delayed flight at OR Tambo over December, but fortunately we had our Diners Club cards with us that allowed us access to your International Premier Lounge. Every staff member was exceptional, and they went out of their way to try and get information about what was happening with our flight. They looked after our hand luggage while we went to try and find more information and they remained cheerful and friendly throughout. As bad as the communication from our carriers was, the assistance from your staff made the extended wait extremely bearable. Thank you and your staff very much. Yours truly, Hilary Holmes Join the Bidvest Premier Lounge Fa c e b o o k pa g e f o r m o r e u p - t o - d at e l o u n g e i n f o r m at i o n !
Dear Gavin A few months ago, my wife and I were in the Premier Lounge at George airport. As my flight was earlier than hers, she spent a long time by herself. She said the staff were really very pleasant and looked after her very well. On the 2nd December, we were again in the lounge, and your young lady Winodene came over and greeted me by name, enquiring whether we were flying together on this occasion. This is pretty impressive service from someone that sees hundreds of customers a month. Well done to the George team. Regards, John East Dear Gavin Our flight on 1st December 2011 was delayed and eventually cancelled. This meant that we were at the airport until 22h30 that evening. During this time I was privileged enough to be able to use your lounge where I experienced exceptional service from a young lady called Tarryn. She even stayed open after 21h00 when she should have gone home. Well done! Yours sincerely, Bob Thorne

Bidvest Premier Lounge Manager Profile Malini Naiker, General Manager of the Bidvest King Shaka Domestic Premier Lounge spoke to Premier about working in Kwa-Zulu Natal – a province known for it’s warmth, in more ways than one.
I started as a lounge receptionist in 2001 and was lucky enough to grow within the company.
20 | PREMIER
Q: What is it like working in the sunny province of Kwa-Zulu Natal? A: Well this is not the ideal time to ask this question – with the heat we are experiencing in Durban at the moment its best to be on the beach. Q: Did you grow up in Durban? A: Yes, born and bred here. Q: Do you think the crowd of passengers passing through Durban differs from what you see at other lounges, and if so, how? A: No, not really. We tend to see the same passengers travelling through our lounge to other branches and vice versa. Q: You work exclusively with people who travel – do you like travelling? A: I love it. Given the opportunity, I would do it more often. Q: Are you scared of flying? A: Absolutely not, I love it. Q: What places have you been to? A: I haven’t been abroad much but I did visit Mauritius in November last year and it was fantastic. Q: How did your career in hospitality begin? A: I started as a cashier at a restaurant at Durban International Airport and worked my way up. Q: What kinds of challenges do you come across in your work that people may not know about or understand? A: The airport moving from Durban to La Mercy has had a huge impact on both my staff and our guests. Particularly transport problems as most of my staff reside in the south, closer to the old airport and although it has been about 20 months since the move, it still poses challenges for us.
Q: What does job satisfaction mean to you? A: When my lounge runs smoothly and the staff are happy, then the guests are happy. And when a guest compliments my staff, I feel so proud. Q: So, do you ever sneak a croissant or a quick sausage roll when the guests aren’t looking? A: No not really, I’m well disciplined. Q: What is the one thing that would surprise our readers about you? A: I’m a very down to earth individual. Most would be surprised to learn that I am the Lounge Manager now. I started as a lounge receptionist in 2001 and was lucky enough to grow within the company. Q: What makes you happy? A: Spending time with my family – we find any excuse to have a party. Q: What do you dislike? A: People who lie. Q: What is your worst habit? A: Not having regular meals, especially when I am at work. Q: How do you relax when you are off duty? A: With my husband and daughter, watching good movies. Q: Tell us your favourite joke (if its fit for print). A: The older you get, the tougher it is to lose weight because by then your body and your fat are really good friends (I should know).

Uncorks Its Latest Recycling Initiative
The Vineyard Hotel & Spa’s Food and Beverage Duty Manager, David Wibberley has recently implemented a unique and truly inspiring idea of recycling corks to provide flooring for schools catering for underprivileged kids. “The idea unfolded after I heard about a spate of unfortunate events,” explained Wibberley. “Many poorer communities are affected by accidental shack fires through paraffin lamps or candles being knocked over. Cork has excellent fire retardant qualities as well as having elasticity, durability and hypo-allergenic qualities. I suddenly realised there may be a potential for this product beyond its use in wine making.” The project received enormous support from visitors and guests to the hotel over recent months, as well as from the Vineyard Hotel & Spa’s 5 wine partners (8, 000 corks collected from Klein Constantia alone), Buitenverwachting, Boschendal and Anthonij Rupert, and a combined effort by Villiera and Groot Constantia resulted in over 6000 corks being collected for the project. As a result, the Vineyard Hotel & Spa has collected over 25, 000 corks in just three months. The first project that will benefit from the recycled corks is the Eerste Rivier Empowerment Centre, a safe house for children from abusive homes. The recycled corks will cover an area of 24 square metres that serves as a playroom for the children. For more information visit www.vineyardhotel.co.za.

Master Class Horlogerie The Blue Ocean is a design statement on the wrist and an absolutely unique piece in which countless hours have been invested in restoration, hand-skeletonisation, hand-engraving, and guilloché (an intricate engraving technique) in order to create this masterpiece of time. This timepiece is a skeletonised monopusher chronograph based on a column wheel chronograph movement from 1926 housed in solid platinum with a guilloché platinum crown button. The company’s typical blue platinum coating of the base plate has also found its way into this new unique piece. The base plate was first hand-skeletonised to its barest minimum and the case back hand-guilloché before being coated with the blue platinum developed by Grieb & Benzinger. Every single bridge and cock as well as the wheels and all 34 steel screws are hand-guilloché and polished. As usual, there will only be one lucky timepiece enthusiast worldwide to have the pleasure of wearing this exclusive timepiece on his or her wrist – whose price is structured along the usual Grieb & Benzinger level in the six-digit euro region. Tasty Tapas
Tapas are the perfect way to sample many different foods in one sitting and are perfect for sharing with friends. This month we bring you our top picks for the tastiest tapas from Jo-burg to Cape Town.
A French toast to Bree Street French Toast, City Bowl, Cape Town
French Toast wine and tapas bar, is a typically French wine bar, specialising in both local and international wines and offering a wide variety of generously sized tapas to accompany their impressive wine list. This elegant wine bar is situated in what was once an old city warehouse and has been transformed into a sophisticated venue reminiscent of Paris in the 1950s. Sumptuously comfortable chairs, private leather banquettes, luxurious sofas, oversized light fittings, exposed brick walls, industrial beams and an incredibly beautiful bar counter, which begs to be lounged at, all create an atmosphere of easy elegance. There are few places that offer so many fine imported and local wines by the glass, and French Toast can do this because of their Le Verre de Vin wine preservation system, which reseals wines by removing oxygen from the bottle. Their South African selection of wines is equally impressive, allowing wine lovers to flirt with several estates and vintages. For reservations call +27 21 422 3839.
A Trendy Oasis
Green with Envy, Berea, Durban
An Enchanting Venue
Buddha Ta, Fourways, Johannesburg
This fabulously fresh restaurant is nestled in between the shady trees of the nursery and offers a delicious assortment of meals from hearty & healthy breakfast to cakes, coffee and specialty lunches. It’s the perfect place for friends to meet! As for the menu, besides tapas, expect to see salads, sandwiches (try the beef fillet with balsamic onion, rocket and Dijonaise on ciabatta) and pastas (like the comforting Alfredo) are augmented with a tempting array of cakes. Extensive breakfast options include kippers and a Spanish omelette with chorizo, paprika, potato and cheese. In addition to this mouth watering array, shopaholics will be delighted to find that their next fix is not too far away – as both the Green with Envy nursery and the gift shop are in the same building! The Green with Envy Restaurant is a little oasis that serves hot coffees, crisp wines, decadent desserts and meals that keep you coming back for more. For more information, or to make a booking, call +27 31 201 3779. The name is both mystical and divine, the venue is enchanting and breathtaking. The splendid layout and unique features of this venue offer its visitors an unforgettable experience. The decor poses style and elegance with dark wooden finishes, attention to detail and stunning displays. The lounge areas are soft and inviting and provide an alternative to the cafe style outdoor or the social bar standing areas and high tables. The outside area presents an ideal setting for casual lunches, meetings, socials and sundowners – the impressive cocktails will captivate your imagination. Their signature Candy Floss Mojito is not to be missed! From the kitchen Buddha Ta offers an array of tapas style bites as well as an a la carte menu. Guests are encouraged to come and experience what Buddha Ta has to offer, from food and drink to ambience and vibe whilst rubbing shoulders with Johannesburg’s elite. This spirited venue combines a variety of social scenarios in an electric buzz of excitement and mood. The Pearl of the
Archipelago
Vilanculos Beach Lodge
Vilanculos Beach Lodge sits on a privileged perch among indigenous, rolling tropical gardens and commands stunning views of the Indian Ocean and the Bazaruto Archipelago. At Vilanculos Beach Lodge the approach is more barefoot chic than 5-star opulence, just what one needs for that spectacular holiday in Mozambique.
All too often travellers book a holiday months in advance and are deeply disappointed when they finally arrive at their destination. Let me assure you that we were thrilled to find that this was not the case when we arrived at the Vilanculos Beach Lodge situated in the “allyear-round” playground and charming coastal town of Vilankulos! The town of Vilankulos lies 780km north of Maputo and 500km south of Beira and is the gateway to the world-famous Bazaruto

With the newly built international airport located just 7km from the Lodge which has flights arriving and departing from Maputo, Johannesburg and Nelspruit on a daily basis, one would be hard pressed to find a destination as breath-takingly beautiful and accessible as this. The Bazaruto Archipelago, a chain of islands strung out like a pearl necklace, consists of five islands; Bazaruto, Benguerra, Margaruque, Bangue and Santa Carolina (also known as
Paradise Island). These pristine and undeveloped pieces of paradise offer unspoiled coral pink beaches, world-class deep sea fishing, salt water fly fishing, scuba diving and snorkelling. We arrived at privately owned and operated Vilanculos Beach Lodge at midday after travelling a long way from Cape Town, desperate for our holiday to start and the staff at the lodge did not disappoint us. Vilanculos Beach Lodge is the premier holiday destination on the mainland and the picture-perfect setting for a family vacation, getaway with friends, beach wedding, honeymoon, corporate incentive, conference or reality check from the humdrum of everyday life. The expansive white sandy beach is perfect for leisurely strolls or soaking up the tropical Mozambican sun and is paradise for families who set their sights on sunbathing, lazy days

The lodge is constructed from natural indigenous elements of thatch and local hardwood which have been combined in perfect harmony with plaster walls and wood framed doors and windows resulting in a relaxed yet elegant finish to the luxury chalets and Presidential suite. The property extends right onto the beach and the lodge buildings are set

The rolling green lawns around the main building, pool and activity centre are peppered with palm trees, offering shade on hot summer days. Scattered paved areas amongst the trees offer quiet shaded areas for drinks, meetings, meals or simple relaxation. The spacious restaurant offers the choice of dining indoors or out on the patio under attractive shade sails. An extensive a la carte menu of traditional Mozambican foods is on offer, but fresh, scrumptious seafood remains the specialty. In fact, they give the word ‘speciality’ a new meaning. cater for all tastes. Take a day trip to the islands and enjoy snorkelling, scuba diving or game fishing; explore Vilanculos; ride a horse in the surf or just relax on the beach and soak up the sun. Vilanculos Beach Lodge is the perfect base from which to explore the Bazaruto Archipelago. Most of the Archipelago has been declared a National Park and sustains a diverse range of flora and fauna. Visitors are often rewarded with sighting of dolphins, turtles, Manta Rays, Humpback whales and, if you are lucky, the elusive and extremely rare dugong. Over 150 bird species have been identified in the area, including several rare species and their varied habitats make this a birdwatcher’s paradise. The sand banks are a haven for pelicans and wading birds such as flamingos. The Bazaruto Archipelago is a world renowned deep-sea fishing destination, particularly for marlin and sailfish anglers. Fishing is excellent all year round, especially for giant king fish, king mackerel, yellow fin tuna and barracuda, with Dorado and Wahoo being found in the summer months. Knowledgeable
local skippers will expertly guide you to the current fishing hot spot aboard one of the lodge’s fishing vessels for a memorable day of game fishing, drop shotting, light tackle or fly fishing. Back home now, reflecting on our amazing few days at Vilanculos Beach Lodge, the deeply imprinted beauty and peace that we experienced there will for many years form part of our memory – in particularly when work demands are dominating our lives and we need to close our eyes and think of the perfect escape. Westwood
retains Nedbank Golf Challenge title
Lee Westwood became only the sixth player in Nedbank Golf Challenge history to successfully defend his title when he won by two strokes at the Gary Player Country Club on 4th December 2011.
With a final round of 73 for a total of 15 under, Westwood joined Seve Ballesteros (1983 and 1984), David Frost (1989 and 1990), Nick Price (1997 and 1998), Ernie Els (1999 and 2000), and Jim Furyk (2005 and 2006) as the only players to have defended their titles in the 31-year history of this event. “I’m delighted. It’s a great tournament to win. You just have to look at the names on the trophy to realise how special it is. It’s not the winning margin that is important to me, but it’s the coming back and defending the title that is so satisfying,” said Westwood. Sweden’s Robert Karlsson finished second
on 13 under with a closing 68, while Jason Dufner and Graeme McDowell shared third place on 11 under. McDowell and Dufner did their best to make a contest of it but both his challengers faltered at the par-four 15th, each with a double bogey that ended their challenge. Karlsson made his own run over the closing holes with three birdies, and a single bogey, from the 14th. But such was Westwood’s lead that he could afford to bogey 17 and 18 and still win by two. “It wasn’t going to be easy going out with a big lead. When you’ve got a big lead you’re never sure how to play. I tried to break it down

and hit fairways and greens. I kept it on the safe side whenever I could, and on the back nine I tried to play conservatively. That 62 was so special and I was never going to replicate it.” Westwood also enjoyed the local support he received. “I seem to have a lot of fans down here and have had a lot of support since I’ve been coming down here since 1994. It was great out there and they were right behind me. “I’d love to be the first to win three in a row. But I want to enjoy this one first. I’ll have a couple of glasses of champagne on this one.”

Why not try something new this year?
Treasures
of the boutique winery
If 2011 was anything to go by, we are sure to see the continuation of the rise of the new ‘foodie’ in South Africa. Artisinal bakers, butchers and beermakers will continue to populate the local food scene, with farmers’ markets multiplying countrywide. The significant buzz generated by the upcoming production of Master Chef in South Africa is testament to the growing enthusiasm and innovation of ‘foodies’ within the country. This month, Sommelier Neil Grant, who has himself just opened a new restaurant, Burrata, in Cape Town’s famous Old Biscuit Mill, introduces us to three noteworthy artisinal boutique wines. Windfall Sauvignon Blanc 2011 This great find hails from a winery situated in what is popularly known as ‘The Valley of Wine and Roses’ in Robertson in the Western Cape. It is a tropical Sauvignon Blanc that is fresh on the nose and easy on the acidity. The sweet melon and apple notes ensure the perfect refreshment for a long summer‘s afternoon.
52 | PREMIER
Howard Booysen Pegasus Cinsaut 2011 Howard’s Cinsaut is as spectacular as his famous Riesling. It is a sommelier’s friend, able to work with those unusual food combinations (such as a turkey and cranberry sauce dish, for example, with which it pairs beautifully). It is an elegant, light and refreshing wine. The alcohol content is a low 12.5%, but when it comes to fruit and flavour, this wine takes the lead with its abudnace of juicy, floral and berry notes.
Vuurberg White Blend 2010 Located just outside Stellenbosch in the Banhoek Valley, the Vuurberg boutique winery was founded by Sebastian Klaassen with the help of Miles Mossop of Tokara Winery fame. In 2010 Sebastian handed over the winemaking to Donovan Rall, who has already started to make his mark in the industry. Donovon’s roots hail mainly from making wines in the Swartland, and this white blend has a distinct Swartland feel to it. The wines go into a basket press, straight into a barrel and are fermented naturally, keeping both process and product refreshingly simple. This blend constitutes 40% Chenin Blanc, 20% Viognier, 20% Semillon, 10% Roussanne and 10% Grenache Blanc. The majority of the grapes are sourced from Stellenbosch. The White Blend 2010 has the Viognier characteristic of dominant Honeysuckle notes. It is also rich in peach and apricot notes, while remaining clean and fresh.

The Competition Revs Up
2011 Car of the Year Finalists Finding a worthy Car of the Year (COTY) winner is no simple feat. With hundreds of new car models and derivatives launched in 2011, the COTY Jury has its work cut out as it prepares to test this year’s 10 finalists at Gerotek, west of Pretoria. It’s an epic battle that has raged since 1986 and, this year, the South African Guild of Motoring Journalists will again put the best of the best through their paces to find the 2011 Car of the Year competition winner. This year, the 10 finalists will undergo static as well as dynamic evaluation, with the focus firmly set on build quality, cost of replacement parts, and value for money, as well as the vehicle’s ability to perform the tasks it was designed for.

Audi A6 3.0 TDI Quattro S-Tronic As a regular winner of the competition, the A6 is no stranger to praise and accolades. It is a brilliantly equipped sports car masquerading in the body of a sedan. The A6 oozes luxury and boasts top quality build, dynamic performance and pride of ownership. It may stumble, however, when value for money comes into play. Personally, I would rank the all wheel drive A6 as a hot favourite to take the title. It will then proudly join its Audi/VW predecessors, who have walked away with the trophy on no fewer than six occasions.

Citroën DS THP 200 Sport Should the Citroën DS4 win, it will score a first for this premium French manufacturer. It certainly has enough power, more than enough French style (after all, its big brother, the Citroën C6, is French President Nicolas Sarkozy’s ride). It also has the advantage of exclusive ownership (there aren’t that many of them on our roads). Nevertheless, being French, the DS4 would not do justice to its country of origin’s reputation if it did not feature at least one quirky design aspect. In this case, the rear windows cannot wind down, and rear passengers have to rely on the car’s air conditioning, albeit excellent, to keep cool in summer. The DS4 has an outside chance of taking the title.
Ford Focus 2.0 TDCI Trend Powershift The Focus brings to the competition German build quality, modern design and probably one of the best chassis currently available in road cars. Although the interior design – especially the instrument cluster – may not be to everyone’s taste, the Focus is a hot favourite in the value for money department. Should it win, it will be only the second time that Ford has managed to grab the title after the Fiesta took the honours in 1998.
Hyundai Elantra 1.8 GLS The Elantra looks set to make history as the first Korean car to take the title. With its flowing, modern design, comprehensive specification list, huge luggage compartment and adequate power from its modern four cylinder engine, the Elantra is virtually impossible to fault. Closely resembling its bigger brother, the Sonata (which was unlucky not to have taken the title last year), the Elantra is also arguably the best value for money proposition in this year’s line-up. I regard the Elantra as a potential 2012 winner.
Kia Picanto 1.2 EX This chunky little German-designed Korean runabout was a surprise finalist. It looks small and underpowered (until you actually drive it), and too inconsequential to run with the big boys. However, its modern 1.2 litre, four cylinder engine is proof that a prospective owner does not have to stoop to a silly little 1 litre, three cylinder car to get value for money. The Picanto is a poodle which manages to run (and keep up) with the big dogs.

Mercedes-Benz SLK 350 BlueEFFICIENCY No competition of this nature would be complete without the presence of a model representing the oldest manufacturer in the world. The SLK literally has everything that the motoring heart desires: Stunning good looks, unmatched build quality and performance, as well as superb road holding and braking. But then the heart breaking reality kicks in that the SLK is a twoseater, and no two-seater has ever won the competition. Price will also be a consideration. After all, one could probably buy 12 Kia Picantos for the price of a single SLK. This might be one of the reasons why Mercedes-Benz has only won the competition once, in 1987.
Peugeot 5008 2.0 HDI Active Manual Supporting the Citroën DS4 as the only other French make in the competition, the Peugeot brings modern, if unusual, design to the competition. It has a powerful and willing turbo diesel engine, and superb interior comfort. It offers reasonable to good value for money, and that elusive “not everyone has one” ownership cachet. Although deserving of its place in the list of finalists, it is doubtful that the Peugeot will take the title.
Suzuki Kizashi 2.4 SDLX Manual As a young brand in our country (it has only been here since 2009) Suzuki has made great strides, regularly selling more than 400 units per month. The Kizashi has tons of power, sports car handling, every conceivable creature comfort and safety gadget, and the ability to grab the title from under the noses of its more fancied rivals. Hard to fault, the Kizashi is muscular and compact, but the boot lid design does take some getting used to.
Volkswagen Jetta 1.4 TSI 118 kW HighLine It is inconceivable not to have a Volkswagen in the lineup of any COTY competition. Having won six times (with cousins Audi), the Jetta, as always, is a major competitor. It does everything right with its relatively small but powerful engine, and offers traditional VW build quality. I have a suspicion, however, that the Jetta is a little too bland and lacking in the “wow” factor to take the crown.

We’re Landing
Where?
Taking on Juancho E. Yrausquin Airport’s 396m runway
Just the word ‘airport’ is enough to make anyone cringe. We rush from one side to the other, trying to get in and out as fast as possible but if you stop to take a look around, an airport can be a very interesting place: some steeped in history, others breaking world records and almost all of them changing every day. Each month, Premier brings you a closer look at some of the biggest, the smallest, the best and most technologically advanced airports in the world. The airport we will be looking at this month has quite a reputation. Some call it the smallest airport in the world, some call it the scariest, I call it an airport I don’t see myself ever landing at; but on the Dutch owned Caribbean Island of Saba, it is known as Juancho E. Yrausquin. Located in the Caribbean, the island of Saba is held as a municipality within the country of the Netherlands and is a twelve minute flight from the popular holiday destination island of St Martin. Saba is a small island, roughly 13km2 in size, with a population of about 2,000 people. The island itself consists mainly of the potentially active volcano, Mount Scenery which, at 800m, is the highest point of the Kingdom of the Netherlands. The island’s
official language is Dutch, but English is more commonly spoken and is used in their school system. In January 2011, the US dollar replaced the Netherlands Antillian Guilder as Saba’s official currency. The danger in landing at or taking off from Jauncho E. Yrausquin airport lies in the nuances of its geographical location. The runway is situated on a narrow cliff with high hills along one side and a steep cliff face along the other
and at either end. Despite being well known among pilots as the most dangerous airport in the world, it actually has no recorded accidents in its history, which is remarkable. Because of the island’s sloping topography and limited amount of land, the only option was to build the runway on this particular stretch of land. This means that at 396m, the runway is not much longer than the average aircraft carrier. At less than one eighth of the length

of most runways at commercial airports, the runway has to be approached in a very specific and careful way otherwise pilots run the risk of under- or over-shooting the runway meaning that they could end up in the sea or smashed onto a cliff face. The airport is officially marked as closed to commercial traffic but local airlines are still able to land there by obtaining waivers from the Netherlands Antilles’ Civil Aviation Authority. The runway tarmac is marked with an X at both ends indicating to pilots that it is not open for commercial use. Jettype aircraft obviously cannot land at the airport because they require a much greater distance for landing or taking off but smaller airplanes and helicopters are a common sight around the island. The most common planes that you are likely to see are the De Havilland Canada DHC-6 Twin Otter and the Britten-Norman 2 Islander. The only airline currently serving Juancho E. Yrausquin Airport is Windward Island Airways, more commonly known as Winair. Winair operates daily flights from Saba to the islands of St Maartin and St Eustatius on the DHC-6 Twin Otter. The terminal is situated on the south

side of the airport and houses the offices for Winair, immigration, security, a fire department with one fire truck and a tower. The tower is merely an advisory service and does not provide any kind of air traffic control. Pilots flying to Saba need to remember to have enough fuel on board to get to Saba and back because aviation fuel is not available on the island. This airport is not recommended for people who are afraid of flying but without the valuable service that these brave pilots offer, many people on the island would have to go without basic services such as mail and the delivery of supplies. While I don’t see myself ever landing at this infamously scary airport, some of you adrenaline junkies out there might get a kick out of it.

All of the rooms also have a radio and TV with tea and coffee-making facilities. In addition, there are six conference rooms,

Much talk, little action
Climate change is still high on the agendas of most of the Top 100 listed companies in SA despite short-term concerns and the pressure resulting from the downturn in the economy. This is evidenced by the results of the 2011 report for SA by the Carbon Disclosure Project (CDP). As many as 83% of the Top 100 JSE companies took part in this year’s project, compared with 74% last year. This is the second-highest participation rate among all the countries that took part in the CDP this year, says Jonathon Hanks, director of Incite Sustainability, the environmental consultation group running the CDP on behalf of the National Business Initiative (NBI). The participation rate throughout all sectors of the economy improved, except in the energy and materials sectors, because of new companies entering the Top 100 for the first time. The biggest improvement in participation was in the information technology, telecommunications and consumer goods sectors. However, the CDP this year still shows that certain sectors have a fairly low response rate, especially the property sector, in which only three out of nine companies replied to requests to participate. Even so, this is an improvement over last year, when only two property companies took part. The performance of the hotel sector is still poor, with the only company in the sector still not participating for the fifth consecutive year. NBI CEO Joanne Yawitch said in the foreword to this year’s report that companies that participated honestly and consistently in the CDP will be well positioned to be at the forefront of the transition to a green economy. Sectors that responded poorly in the past showed an improvement, especially the food sector, in which all the companies participated. All the companies in the industrial and IT and telecommunications sectors also participated. Another encouraging trend is that 99% of the participating companies disclosed their annual greenhouse-gas emissions – the original
64 | PREMIER
idea of the CDP. This is an improvement on last year’s 94% and 2009’s 87%. The 2011 CDP report shows a growing awareness among SA companies of the risks and opportunities inherent in climate change, even if it’s often only in a general sense. Few companies show evidence of being thorough in the calculation of the potential financial implications of climate change, and there are questions concerning the extent to which companies respond strategically enough to the identified risks and opportunities. While there were only 20 companies in 2009 that had targets for the reduction of greenhouse gases, and only 31 last year, this year 40 companies boast of reduction targets. The targets are a mixture of absolute and intensity-based targets, with a large measure of difference in the ambition and time framework levels. Again, there’s also an increase in the disclosure of initiatives for the greenhouse-gas reduction, with the greatest emphasis on energy efficiency. The total amount of money allocated to the initiatives grew from R9.5 billion to R17.9 billion. According to Johann Scholtz, head of legal firm Webber Wentzel’s climate change and carbon treatment practice group, the implementation of such initiatives require large-scale restructuring, and it’s costly. But the feeling is that delaying action or an absence of action will cost a lot more. A few carbon-intensive companies still dominate SA’s direct greenhouse-gas emissions. These are the so-called Scope 1 emissions, which exclude the emissions related to electricity consumption. Eskom’s greenhouse-gas emission for the financial year to the end of March this year was 230,3 million tons, which represents 45% of SA’s total emissions. Eskom and all the Top 100 JSE companies together are responsible for
65% of the country’s greenhouse-gas emission. The writers of the 2011 CDP report feel that though it’s important to monitor the progress of the large greenhouse-gas emitters, this should not be at the cost of less emphasis on companies with the potential to change the behaviour of organisations and individuals within their sphere of influence. This is the fifth year that an SA CDP report is being issued. The partners and sponsors of this year’s CDP are the auditing group KPMG, asset managers Element Investment Managers, the Industrial Development Corporation, the SA Post Office and legal firm Webber Wentzel.

FINAL THOUGHTS
MICHAEL VLISMAS
What’s in a
Name?
“I have the sea legs of a Kalahari bushman.”
72 | PREMIER
You have a sense that your day will not be an ordinary one when you sip your morning coffee, switch on the TV to catch the European Short Course Swimming Championships, and are just in time to see a Russian swimmer by the name of Semen Makovich hit the pool. Semen Makovich? Destined to always finish first? He didn’t this time. The fact that the champs were in Szczecin in Poland already required a second cup of coffee just to pronounce that name. I once met an Italian professional golfer by the name of Ivo Giner. Don’t dare say that one too fast either. Another favourite of mine is the property agent in Bronkhorstspruit (yes, people do want to buy property there). Her name is Phyllis Steyn. And I’ve always had a soft spot for Linda “Sparky” Hawes. She comes up on the credits of a number of the popular sitcoms. Anyway, the day unravelled rapidly from the moment I watched Semen Makovich make his splash and dash. It was December and we were in Cape Town. We’d done the whole Great Trek, going on our epic family road trip from Pretoria, stopping in the book town of Richmond, visiting the flood museum in Laingsberg, and playing touches with the boys in the one-horse town of Hanover while the wife hit a farm stall with a vengeance. But this particular day we hit the beach at Rooiels. And things grew more bizarre. We were no sooner on the beach than we spotted what my wife thought was a dead piglet. That alone was a strange concept. It turned out to be a seal. There were about 15 of them, washed onto the rocks by a freak storm. People were coming down with spades to bury them. They really pull out all the stops for us Vaalies. Then we spotted what we thought were sharks breaching in the waves. In a frenzy of excitement we told the locals next to us. They blandly informed us that it was seals throwing around the octopus that they had caught. Not our finest National Geographic moment. But the highlight was the Coloured family that had come down to do some crayfishing. They were a fantastic bunch. Ridiculously friendly. They even allowed the boys and me to take a trip on their little inflatable as they threw down their nets. The boys loved it, while I did my customary throwing up. I have the sea legs of a Kalahari bushman. They also offered us a few crayfish to take home. We eagerly agreed, then were told we needed a permit for the little fellas. So we had to turn them down, and settle for the permit-free pizza for supper. But when we left the beach, with the sun setting and all of us bathed in the glow of a magnificent day, I shook hands with the chief crayfisher. “Thanks …” I said, waiting for him to give me his name. “Freddie,” he says to me. “Freddie Orff”. As in F. Orff. That night I watched the highlights of the European Short Course Swimming Championships. My wife is still not entirely sure why I cheered so much when Semen Makovich finished second.

A new wine list will be selected every four months and will be available for your perusal in the Premier Magazine. 01 Moonstone Premier Vintage 2005: The red partner to the Moonstone exclusive range has been blended for the discerning wine drinker and from grapes selected at the historically rich farm, Vergenoegd. The bottle-aged blend comprises a magical combination of five grape varieties – Cabernet Franc, Merlot, Touriga Naçional, Cabernet Sauvignon and Shiraz. This is a serious red wine. Rich and full-bodied, this wine holds depth of flavour that keeps on giving. Subtle notes of vanilla, cloves and spice ensure that this wine continues to evolve in the glass from the first to the last sip. From hints of black olives to tobacco with a slight minty note – this wine will have you searching and it will continue giving you more to explore. If you enjoy a fuller, richer red wine, this is the one for you. 02 Moonstone Sauvignon Blanc: A Sauvignon Blanc is perfectly suited to the airline lounge environment, offering a soft and accessible wine with a slightly lower alcohol content and well-integrated flavours, which are ideally suited to the lighter meals served in the lounges. This wine is produced from grapes grown in Elgin, only seven kilometres from the ocean, and these conditions have contributed to this wine’s great character. Easy on the eye, this wine shows its true varietal characteristics with a pale green colour. An attractive array of fresh fruit aromas leap from the glass, where one can pick up hints of fresh lemon, melon, guava and spring floral notes. On the palate, it carries hints of tropical fruit, followed through by clean mineral notes with a dry and refreshing finish.
03 Granite Ridge Reserve Shiraz 2010:
On first appearances this wine seems easy and fresh however on the palate it gives heaps more. On the nose it takes us back to childhood with fun candy floss flavours and floral notes. Clean refreshing acidity with a vibrant finish of lemon, citrus and pink lady apples.
05 The River Garden 06 Excelsior Chardonnay Merlot 2010: 2011: This Chardonnay is elegant and soft on the palate. The nose bursts with floral tones of jasmine and geranium, a prelude to what it offers on the palate. One sip brings to mind the elegance of jasmine, and the balance of melon and apricot.
A light and elegant wine with an approachable personality. Because of the purity of the fruit in this wine, it is surprisingly refreshing for a South African Merlot. The nose shows spice and sweet fruit as it is packed with raspberry, black current and black olives. The oak plays its part in rounding this wine off, but does so with grace.
07 Cape Atlantic Pinotage 2008: A superb red-fruit appearance with hints of vanilla and sweet spice on the nose. This wine is extremely approachable as the softer tannins give way to flavours of mulberry, raspberry and blackberry on the palate. This is a fine example of a modern-style of Pinotage – the true South African grape.*
*Only available in international Premier Lounges
An approachable wine that does not jump out at you with loads of ripe red fruit. Instead it is restrained and perfectly balanced. It shows traces of black pepper and liquorice on the nose. On the palate it is silky with that perfect touch of oak. There is a fine line between too much or too little, and this is just right.
