Strong Minds.Strong Faith

The Toledo Christian Family,

Scott Gibson Superintendent

This morning I woke up to see a beautiful sunrise and it took me back to a quote I read by C.S. Lewis: “I believe in Christianity as I believe that the sun has risen: not only because I see it, but because by it I see everything else.”

The way your student sees the world, the way they approach life, and the depth of their character are all influenced by their education. Philosopher Jean-Paul Sartre once wrote that, “without an infinite reference point, every finite point is absurd.” The need for an infinite reference point explains why an understanding that each child bears the image of God is so central to the process of Christian education. We believe that all children are fearfully and wonderfully made in the image of God and are given a purpose only they can fulfill. Working with you and your church, we look to help pave the way for them to soar, confident in whom and whose they are.

The apostle Paul reminds us in Colossians that, “in Christ are hidden all the treasures of wisdom and knowledge.” We look forward to a great year where we discover those hidden treasures through the lens of Jesus Christ – The Son. Blessed to serve with you, Scott Gibson Superintendent

TCS Teacher Spotlight

New Faces at TCS Mrs. Katie Castor

Ms. Taylor Herschelman

Many of you remember Katie from when she taught in our Eagles Nest from 2006-2008. Katie left to raise her family and returns ready to teach 2nd Grade. Katie and her husband Tim are both 1999 graduates of TCS and worship at First Alliance Church with their children Jocelyn (8), Hannah (6), and Evan (3). Katie earned her bachelors in Early Childhood Education at Bowling Green State University in 2003. Katie is thrilled to be back at TCS and covets your prayers as she and her family adjust to this transition in their lives. Katie is claiming several verses for the beginning of the school year including Colossians 3:17 and 2 Timothy 1:7, but especially 1 Thessalonians 5:16-18 – “Be joyful always. Pray continually. Give thanks in all circumstances for this is God’s will for me in Christ Jesus.”

Taylor is a 2014 graduate of the University of Toledo with a bachelor’s degree in PreK-12 Music and is relocating from Lorain, Ohio. Taylor’s hobbies include reading, amateur photography, and music. Some of Taylor’s goals include rejuvenating the band program by creating an enjoyable environment that fosters learning, creativity, and a Christian lifestyle. She also wants to strengthen the band in numbers and skill level by introducing new, more challenging music and making band a fun experience for all students. Taylor is excited to be the new band director at TCS and appreciates the support she has already received from the parents, students, and staff.

2nd Grade

Mrs. Sarah Dysard Choir Director

We welcome Sarah back to TCS! You may recall Sarah assisted Jim Pinkelman during the spring musical as the vocal coach. Sarah is a 2005 graduate of Bowling Green State University where she earned her bachelor’s degree in Music Education. Sarah is very active in community theatre, various singing groups, giving private lessons, and children’s theatre workshop. Sarah is married to Andrew and they worship at Hope United Methodist Church where she is active in the church choir and assists with the children’s ministry. Sarah is very excited to join the Toledo Christian team and can’t wait to share the love of music with the students, helping them to grow musically, spiritually, and as well rounded individuals.

Band Director

Ms. Anna Kaiser

9th Grade World History Anna attended TCS from kindergarten until 10th grade when she left to spend her junior year as an exchange student in France. She continued her education internationally by attending the Irish-American University in Dublin, Ireland. While living in Ireland, she discovered her passion for history, and recently earned her bachelor’s degree. Anna attends Mosaic Ministries where she is involved in The Beauty Project, Summer Day Camp, Baby University, and serving in the kitchen. Anna is very excited to share her love of world history with her students this year!

Ms. Kara Segler 4th Grade

Kara is a 2010 alumnus of TCS and graduated Summa Cum Laude this past May from the University of Toledo majoring in Middle

Childhood Education. Kara attends Rapha Ministries where she currently serves as the lead percussionist on the worship team and also serves as a children’s ministry teacher. Kara continues to enjoy the challenge of coaching girls’ basketball at various levels. She has also served as the assistant director for Camp Invention and Spark Your Noodle Adventure Camp held during the summer at TCS. Kara is honored to teach and enrich the lives of students at TCS both academically and spiritually so they may fulfill the Lord’s purpose for their lives.

Mr. Dave Westmeyer

Spiritual Life Director Pastor Dave Westmeyer is a native of South Toledo. He trusted Christ as his savior in the middle of his junior year of high school. That summer he answered the call to full time ministry at youth camp. Pastor Dave pursued his ministry training at Trinity Baptist College in Jacksonville, Florida where he earned a Bachelor of Arts in Church Ministries. In 1990 he married Debbie Skeels who had just received her degree in nursing from Pensacola Christian College. They spent five years doing youth ministry in Elizabeth City, North Carolina before moving back to Toledo. Pastor Dave served 16 years as an assistant pastor at Monclova Road Baptist Church. He is currently pastoring the Wood County Baptist Church in Bowling Green. The Westmeyers have two TCS graduates, David (2011) and Darian (2014). Their daughter, Drew, is in her junior year, and Atticus and Madeline are part of our Eagle’s Nest program. Our Lower School students worshipping at their Thursday Chapel.

Flashlight Friday

TCS fifth graders went on an insect hunt to kick-off their study of insects. This very warm trip was topped off with a “cool” visit to Lickity Split for ice cream. Each student also completed an insect collection project Friday, September 11, was Flashlight Friday in Mrs. Johnson’s class. This was a fun activity that is done with all the lights off and students use a flashlight. On Friday, they did a Lego building activity where they had to copy a Lego structure. It was a little harder than just copying a structure, there was a “see-er” a “runner” and a “builder”. The see-er could look at the structure that they had to copy, then they had to tell the runner what to do and the runner had to relay the message to the builder. The builder had to replicate the structure from the messages received. It was a lot of fun and a lot harder than they thought.

Front Row L to R: Braden, Annabelle, Mia; Middle Row: Carleigh, Cody, Erin (holding baby Darren), Darren, Jen; Back Row: Mason, Garner.

How can YOU impact the WORLD? I suggest the best way for most of us to impact the world is to educate, equip, and empower our youth to do great things. The foundation and launch pad is a Christcentered, high-level education provided by Toledo Christian Schools. Does this really happen? YES! I know it does because I experienced it personally in my 13 years as a student at TCS. Now my companies are reaching and impacting people all over the country in the name of Christ. The friends I made at TCS are impacting the entire United States and the WORLD. From Grammy-nominated musical artists, college athletes, pastors, and missionaries to doctors, global businesses, attorneys, and public servants. Most importantly, they are Christ-centered moms and dads – like you – who are raising their children to follow Christ. Now, my wife (Erin) and I have five children at TCS and are so blessed to see how they are taught and trained by loving teachers with a high standard of excellence. We are so thankful TCS is here and is raising the bar for Christian education to come along side and support us as we raise our children. TCS has worked hard to maintain affordable tuition so more families can experience Christ-centered, high-level education. But the tuition only covers 80% of the cost to run the school. The Eagle 1 Fund bridges this gap and does even more. It provides resources for capital improvements to enhance the learning environment. It provides funding to enhance our curriculum and extra-curricular activities. It helps attract and retain our amazing teachers and staff. Let’s join together to share and invest the resources God has given us to support an excellent organization that has proven results so our global impact can continue to grow. Let’s continue to raise the bar on quality and excellence in Christian education.

Fall Gala

Red Carpet Event, Featuring David A.R. White We are rolling out the red carpet for our annual Fall Gala featuring David A.R. White. David A.R. White is an actor, producer, and director of movies such as “God’s Not Dead”, “Mom’s Night Out”, and “Do You Believe?” The Fall Gala is a fundraising event that includes dinner and entertainment for the whole family.

This year’s event will be held at Parkway Place in Maumee, Ohio on Friday, November 13. Doors open at 5:45 p.m. and dinner begins at 6:30 p.m. Tickets are $65 for individuals, $550 for a Full Table Sponsor and $275 for a Half Table Sponsor.

hat is the Fall Gala? Why should you attend? Do you have to dress up? Where does the money go? These may be a few of the questions that come to mind when you hear about our 2015 Fall Gala Red Carpet Event. Please let me provide some clarification for you!

TV CBS sitcom, Evening Shade for four years; he played the best friend of Burt Reynolds’s son. David then went on to guest appearances on such shows as: Coach, Saved by the Bell, Sisters, Melrose Place, Martial Law and many others. Early in 2006, David became a founding partner in the film distribution/production entity PURE FLIX. Today, Pure Flix maintains its position as the number one faith-based studio, producing and distributing more films in this genre than any other studio. David also maintains his position as one of the most prolific actors/filmmakers in the faith based arena, as he writes, directs, produces, and stars in many of the films.

For ticket information, contact the Development Office at 419-389-8700, ext. 153 or download a registration by going to toledochristian.com/ support-tcs and clicking on 2015 Fall Gala.

The Fall Gala, also commonly known as “The Banquet”, has been around TCS since the beginning. The purpose of the Fall Gala is to raise financial support for Toledo Christian Schools. Initially, there were spaghetti dinners and pot lucks where the hat was passed around the tables to raise money for the school. As time progressed, the event went off campus and a family event was formed. TCS has had many different keynote speakers over the years, including Colonel Oliver North, Former Arkansas Governor and Presidential candidate Mike Huckabee, former NFL Superbowl winner Terry Bradshaw, and award winning comedian Lyndsay Phillips. Many families over the years would purchase a table or find another family to split the cost to support the mission of the school and have a great evening receiving updates from the school, fellowshipping with other TCS families, and receiving a blessing along the way. Would you please prayerfully consider attending the Fall Gala and purchasing a table for TCS? All of the money raised at the Fall Gala goes directly into the Eagle 1 Fund to support the mission of TCS. The Eagle 1 Fund is a comprehensive fundraising campaign that supports the highest needs of Toledo Christian Schools. As of today, funding scholarships and academic programs, repairing and updating our TCS Chapel (roof, carpet, chairs, sound system), and creating an Academic Enrichment Center are high on the list of priorities. We believe we have a great speaker lined up to help inspire you and your family. Mr. David A.R. White’s resume is long and decorated; he will lift you up with his “Dream Big” presentation. Please join us this year! If you have never attended the Fall Gala/Banquet, this is the year to step forward and secure a table or tickets. On a final note, you do not need to dress up for the Fall Gala. The dress is casual to semi-formal. I hope to see each and every one of you on November 13th at Parkway Place in Maumee, OH.

A note from the President: As more and more alumni continue to get reconnected with TCS, I want to start by welcoming them back into the TCS community! With an alumni base over 1,500, our main mission is to always be reaching out and reconnecting alumni to their friends, classmates, teammates, and school. As an update, we have had a great start to the new school year as we have added three new members to our Alumni Council: Ted Weemes ‘09, Tabi Weemes (Yeager) ‘09 and Lance Wood ‘09. Each one has jumped in head first with new ideas and a willing spirit. I want to encourage any alumnus that has a desire to serve and lead our alumni to contact me for more information regarding our Alumni Council positions.

We are very excited about the upcoming homecoming weekend! We made it our goal to create a special homecoming weekend where alumni can participate and connect in numerous ways with their fellow alumni. Due to the amazing success of last year’s tailgate, we will again be hosting the Annual Homecoming Alumni Tailgate on October 16th. For the first time, the Alumni Association will be hosting the Toledo Christian Golf Outing at the Toledo Country Club on the following morning, October 17th. As the homecoming weekend approaches, I want to encourage you to reconnect with your friends and family from TCS. Make plans to come out to the football game and the golf outing to both support your alma mater and create new memories with us!

The minor is a collection of theatre and film classes that all relate to the different skills an assistant director needs to have.” She credits Kelly Mangan, an instructor in scenic design, prop design and technical theatre, for the opportunities to have leadership roles backstage, and Ostrowski for giving her a better grasp of the job of assistant director when he hired her for his film. “I am proud of every production I have been a part of here at BG,” said Dick. “My favorite was working backstage on ‘Legally Blonde.’ It was such a challenge because all the set pieces were double sided and on wheels. We barely had enough room to move the crew around backstage, let alone giant set pieces. Good times!”

What’s next for Dick after she leaves BGSU in the spring of 2016? “I will be applying to the Directors Guild of America Assistant Directors Program, which only about 20 applicants get into. It’s a long shot but it’s worth it if I can get in,” she said. “If that doesn’t work, I will probably end up moving to Atlanta. There is a ton of work as a production assistant and studios are popping up right and left. It’s actually quite fascinating; they might be giving L.A. a run for their money in the near future. “I know what I want. Not many people my age can say that. So when opportunities show up I will do everything I can to milk it for all it’s worth. I also hold myself to a high standard, pushing for 100 percent in everything I do.” Written by Liz Gladieux, BG News
