ART AND CULTURE • Category................................................................................................
The Great Wine Capitals Global Network is proud to present another edition of the best examples of wine tourism destinations in the world. “Best Of Wine Tourism 2009” is in its seventh year of existence, and building a reputation for collecting under its banner the most tourism efficient, dynamic, beautiful, environmentally and socially friendly wineries. One of the main objectives of the Network, from a tourism perspective, is to make wineries with public facilities more accessible, coupled with a professional, enjoyable experience. To this end, there is a strong emphasis on training and service excellence - “Best Of” winners are heavily scrutinised for this element during judging. It’s not sufficient to have the views, product or even reputation if you don’t have world-class service. And service starts before the guest arrives at the property. Technology has become increasingly vital in the marketing and communication strategy of competing wineries. The secret is to capture the potential visitor early in the decision process. E-mobility through hand-held technology supported by slick websites is the future of our day. Consumers have become the new commentators, with platforms to express opinions and relate experiences like blogs and social networking sites leading the way to a next generation of communication. We wish you numerous unforgettable experiences as you embark on your Global wine tour, whether it is Bilbao|Rioja, Bordeaux, Cape Town, Firenze, Mendoza, Porto, San Francisco|Napa Valley or latest member Mainz|Rheinhessen. Clarence JOHNSON, Executive Mayor (Cape Town-Cape Winelands) President of the Great Wine Capitals Global Network 2009

Bilbao-Rioja
ilbao, the most important city in northern Spain, is located on the coast of the Bay of Biscay. It is today a rich and vibrant city, with important cultural spaces such as the Guggenheim Museum, and the gleaming, arched footbridge, the Pasarela de Uribitarte, designed by Spaniard Santiago Calatrava. It is also the gateway to the Rioja wine region, with its centuries old traditions and rich and varied regional cuisine. The architectural treasures of Bilbao – where even the metro system has been designed by Sir Norman Foster, winner of the prestigious Pritzker Architecture Prize – has carried over into its neighbouring wine district, and the stunning scenery of Rioja is contrasted with an ever growing number of startling, excitingly designed wineries, cellars and welcome centres.

Firenze
ne of the most evocative names in the world, Florence is located in the heart of Tuscany, a region of rolling hills, stately cypress trees, ancient olive groves and endless vistas of vineyards reaching down to the Mediterranean sea. The Medieval city of Firenze, with its iconic art galleries and museums, is protected by UNESCO, and is also the perfect base for exploring the wine-regions of Tuscany. The heart of Tuscany is found among the central hills of Chianti, and its soul in the Sangiovese grape, making rich and gentle Chianti Classicos. Wine tourism here unrolls at the same leisurely pace as the rest of life - art courses among the vines, walking or horse riding through vineyards, food and wine match making the most of the luscious Italian foodstuffs, from sun-drenched tomatoes to rich wild boar pastas.

Mendoza
endoza, located in mid-west Argentina, at the feet of the Andes Mountains, is the country’s 4th largest city, and is the vibrant heart of its wine making, accounting for almost 70% of the output of an increasingly sophisticated and dynamic industry. Its exceptional climate allows the best grapes to ripen, among them the signature grape of Argentinean wine Malbec. Wine tourism is as dynamic as the rest of the wine sector, with high-altitude wineries within easy reach of the city that offer spectacular views of the snow-capped Andes, and gleaming new installations opening up with a variety of high-end eateries, sleek tasting rooms and sumptuous accommodation. One of the world’s most exciting emerging wine tourism destinations.

Porto
estling in the northwest corner of Portugal, the dusky pinks, yellows and blues of the UNESCO-historic centre of Porto glow in the evening sunshine, as the buildings look over to the historic Porto wine cellars on the bank of the Douro river, where the major port houses have their warehouses, many offering fascinating visitor centres for the wine tourist. This is a romantic and beautiful city to explore, and just an hour from the stunning Douro Valley, where steep terraces of vines form some of the most spectacular landscape in the world. These vines make the Touriga grapes to be transformed into port and increasingly into a rich still red wine. It is also a short drive from Vinho Verde, home to the light, fresh white wine that has made such a renaissance in recent years.
