MEET JESSICA GONZALEZ
AFTER YEARS ON THE MORNING TEAM, SHE’S NOW BRINGING YOU THE NEWS ON KFOX14 NEWS AT NINE.
Iam the daughter of Mexican parents. My dad is a doctor across the border in Ciudad Juarez. I get my public speaking and writing skills from him. I also got the music gene from his side of the family. He’s one of the best men I know. My mom? She’s worn many hats in the workforce. She is the reason I am who I am today. My biggest supporter. I unfortunately didn’t get the cooking or baking gene from her side of the family. The dancing one though? Absolutely. She’s the one who taught me that “el que quiere, puede.” And today she watches over me from heaven, hopefully proud of who she molded. I have 3 sisters who are my best friends. I owe so much to my loving family. They are the ultimate village. My kids, are my entire universe! I was a mom at 19 and that forced me to get it together quickly. My two girls and son have been my biggest blessing.
I adore this city. I grew up in Northeast El Paso, graduated from Irvin High School, where you get built with tough skin but the community around you also shows you a pretty cool kind of love. It’s where the Korean markets lure me in to get the fix of my favorite foods. And I believe that’s where the best Chicos Tacos is. Where the Franklin Mountain views are unbeatable.
While I’m a Spanish-speaking Mexican-American, I love salsa music like a Puerto Rican. At home you’ll always find me watching a documentary or anything that has to do with true crime, probably accompanied by a cup of co ee. Man, do I love co ee! Ask my people. They’ll tell you how much. Going to live concerts is my new preferred form of entertainment.
NMSU prepared me for the journalism world 17 years ago. I lived on the east coast for a few years to cover sports at the “worldwide leader” and made it back to where my heart led me. I’m a news junkie. I have been part of the KFOX14 team for the last 10 years. I started as an assignments editor. I then became a digital content producer and eventually went in front of the camera as the morning tra c reporter and then morning anchor.
I am now ready to begin the next chapter anchoring at 5 and 9 p.m. The things I love most about my job? It’s di erent every day. I get to talk about my community. I learn so much from the people I interview. I o ten feel like I’m making a di erence in some of the stories I tell. And I hope I get to continue this journey for years to come. Thank you for allowing me into your homes, El Paso and Las Cruces!
FUN FACTS:
▪ Seen Alejandro Fernandez in concert 11+ times, but salsa music still steals her heart
▪ Terrified of roaches, seriously!
▪ Former waitress and co ee fanatic

▪ Favorite Rom-Com? My Big Fat Greek Wedding
▪ Loves exploring the world with her kids and family!

From the
elcome to the busiest, craziest, and arguably the most exciting time of the year. It’s time to determine our annual resolutions (or revolutions, for the brave), manifest who we’ll be over the next 12 months, and ask existential questions.
For me, it’s always: Where did the time go?
I don’t have to look far to answer my own question. Rather, I gaze at the shelves of archives and stacks on stacks on stacks of magazines we’ve so enjoyed planning, publishing, and partying for.
Dozens of stories, hundreds of pages, thousands of words, and uncountable memories were made this year that we’re so privileged to have documented in
print. From our Best Of event in January and some of our edgiest editorials (ever!), to celebrating milestones and welcoming new members of the team, this year has been emblematic of the thriving cultural ecosystem El Paso boasts.
Lifestyle is so much more than anything other than “hard” news.
Our jobs center on recognizing the people who have their finger on the pulse of the community, while also forecasting next steps and new directions for the upcoming year.
Welcome to the future!
May we be so much better than we were yesterday.

El Paso Film Festival Makes Its Mark on the World Stage
By: ERIN COULEHAN photos courtesy of: THE EL PASO FILM FESTIVAL
What started as a local celebration of storytelling has grown into a global sensation. The El Paso Film Festival, founded in 2018 by filmmaker Carlos F. Corral has officially been named one of the Top 25 Coolest Film Festivals in the World by MovieMaker Magazine.
This recognition puts El Paso on the map for filmmakers and film enthusiasts alike, and it’s easy to see why.
Tim Molloy, editor of MovieMaker Magazine, visited the festival last year and was immediately captivated. The city’s unique blend of cultures, youthful energy, and vibrant storytelling made an unforgettable impression.
“El Paso is a fascinating place,” Molloy said. “The easy mix of energetic, youthful filmmakers and locals who don’t sweat crossing the border and coming back during their lunch hour gives you a sense that anything can happen. The films and talks are challenging and provocative, but also comforting, because it’s a relief to know a film community like this still exists.”
The festival’s mission goes beyond showcasing films; it’s about fostering a thriving creative community. Thanks to partnerships with organizations like the Creating Ways conference, the festival offers educational panels, workshops, and networking events to support filmmakers at every stage of their careers.
“Audiences love the programming, filmmakers have a great time, and special guests get a genuine, COOL experience,” said Drew Mayer-Oakes, El Paso’s Film & Creative Industries Commissioner.
Corral and his team have even loftier goals. As they prepare for the 2025 edition, they’re working to make the El Paso Film Festival the city’s first Oscar-qualifying event. With ongoing collaborations with the El Paso Film & Creative Industries Commission and the El Paso Museum of Art, the festival promises even more groundbreaking programming, special guests, and unforgettable experiences.
“Being recognized as one of the top film festivals in the world means we are becoming a global destination for filmmakers,” said Corral. “This recognition is a testament to the unique, vibrant experience we create for filmmakers and audiences alike.”

In 2024, 27 UTEP faculty members were recognized in the prestigious StanfordElsevier rankings that highlight the top 2% of the most cited researchers worldwide. This marks a significant increase from the 17 UTEP scholars recognized in the rankings’ inaugural edition in 2019. These faculty members have made groundbreaking contributions across disciplines, from engineering and science to liberal arts, pushing the boundaries of global knowledge.
Among the top-cited faculty is Dr. Mark Pederson, whose work in the College of Science has garnered an impressive 28,864 citations, and Dr. Devesh Misra of the College of Engineering, with 25,121 citations. This recognition underscores UTEP’s commitment to fostering innovation and addressing society’s pressing challenges.
“UTEP is home to a distinguished group of academic faculty across a wide range of disciplines,” said Ahmad Itani, Ph.D., Vice President for Research and Innovation. “Their pioneering contributions not only advance global knowledge but also shape solutions to some of the most pressing challenges facing society today, reinforcing the University’s commitment to academic excellence and innovation on a global stage.”
UTEP’s focus on academic excellence extends beyond research. The university was recently named a Fulbright HispanicServing Institution (HSI) Leader for the second consecutive year. Groundbreaking & Award Winning Jordan Foster Construction’s Trailblazing Year
2024
is a year the community will remember, not only for the successful completion of highly-anticipated projects but also for the inspiring professionals who made them possible. These leaders are reshaping the construction landscape and setting new standards for excellence in project management, safety, and leadership.
At Jordan Foster Construction’s Women’s Leadership Council Luncheon, “The Sky is the Limit,” hosted at La Nube, The City Magazine learned how women are leading innovation, cultivating community, and inspiring excellence.
At the forefront of these efforts is Tricia Kagerer, the Executive Vice President of Risk Management for Jordan Foster Construction. Kagerer leads the company’s risk management, safety, and leadership initiatives, ensuring that every project is completed safely and efficiently. With her at the helm, Jordan Foster has been able to navigate complex challenges while maintaining a steadfast commitment to quality and security on all of its projects.
“Our team needs to have good leaders to look up to. I’m very intentional about creating role models for young women,” said Kagerer. “I really believe it’s important for people to see someone that looks like them doing something that they might want to do.”
A key player in the Infrastructure and Concrete Division, Estela Perez serves as the Project
Controls Coordinator. Her role is integral to ensuring that projects stay on track, both in terms of budget and timeline. Perez’s keen attention to detail and organizational skills have helped Jordan Foster maintain its reputation for delivering projects that meet high standards of excellence, including the ambitious La Nube project.
Asma Bayunus, the EHS Operations Manager at Jordan Foster Construction, has been with the company for seven years and plays a crucial role in the company’s safety operations. Bayunus ensures that all projects adhere to environmental, health, and safety regulations, providing a safe environment for every worker on the job site. Her experience and dedication to safety have earned her the respect of her colleagues and reinforced Jordan Foster’s commitment to creating a culture of safety across all its operations.
“I’m really excited that we got to collaborate, and we get to recognize not only the ladies that were a part of watching this all come to fruition, but also all the other ladies. We leave a piece of ourselves in every project we collaborate on. I’m so excited to highlight everybody and emphasize that we’re a part of the growth – we’re pioneers and innovators,” said Bayunus.
Taylor Mathews, a Risk Analyst, is another key member of the team contributing to Jordan Foster’s success. Mathews’ role in assessing and managing risks ensures that the company is always prepared for potential challenges, allowing them to respond quickly and effectively. Her analytical approach has been invaluable in ensuring the safety and profitability of each project.
“I feel really blessed to be part of this,” said Matthews. “I love seeing how excited people are about La Nube.”
One of the year’s crowning achievements for Jordan Foster Construction is the completion of La Nube, the STEAM discovery center in the heart of downtown. This innovative project not only exemplifies architectural brilliance but also showcases the strength and ingenuity of the diverse team behind it. Among those leading the charge were the women of Jordan Foster, whose leadership, expertise, and resilience were instrumental in bringing the project to life amidst pandemicrelated challenges.
La Nube, which is designed to inspire future generations through hands-on learning experiences, stands as a testament to the power of collaboration, creativity, and determination. The women of Jordan Foster Construction played pivotal roles in all aspects of the project, from project management to engineering and safety. Their contributions have left an indelible mark on a space that will serve the El Paso community for years to come.
The significance of the project has not gone unnoticed. Jordan Foster Construction was recently awarded the Eagle Award from ABC South Texas, the organization’s highest honor. This accolade recognizes the company’s exceptional work on La Nube and underscores its commitment to quality, safety, and forwardthinking design.
“We are deeply honored to receive the Eagle Award from ABC,” said Darren Woody, CEO of Jordan Foster Construction. “La Nube is a one-of-a-kind project designed to inspire curiosity and creativity; we are proud to have played a role in bringing this exceptional vision to life. This award is a testament to the hard work, dedication, and expertise of our entire team and the collaborative spirit of everyone involved, from our project team to the community of El Paso.”
From the field to the boardroom, the women leading these projects are breaking barriers,
setting new standards, and creating a lasting impact.
Their work on La Nube is just the beginning of what promises to be a continued journey of innovation, excellence, and inclusivity. As the company moves forward, it’s clear that the future of construction is not only about building structures but also about building a diverse and inclusive workforce that reflects the communities they serve.
“The success of La Nube is a result of teamwork, innovative thinking, careful execution, and our commitment to excellence,” said Ash Kamath, Vice President of Jordan Foster Construction. “We’re thrilled that ABC South Texas has recognized our team’s dedication and skill with the Eagle Award. We look forward to continuing to learn from our experiences and set new standards of excellence on our projects.”

he fashion industry is evolving in unprecedented ways, requiring a whole new vocabulary to capture its spirit. Contemporary fashion slang, such as “serving” or “ate,” reflects the cultural shift toward celebrating creativity and bold expression. In this new era, fashion isn’t a solitary endeavor but a collaborative garden where everyone contributes and thrives.
In El Paso, this “Garden of Eaten” is flourishing with emerging talent, innovation, and creativity.
One standout is local couturier Jose Gaucin, whose story mirrors a modern fashion fairytale. Born and raised in El Paso, Gaucin discovered his passion for design during the pandemic. While in high school, he began experimenting with a sewing machine, teaching himself to create garments. Today, his edgy, sustainable

collections are making waves locally and beyond. Soon, Gaucin will take his talents to New York City to attend the prestigious Fashion Institute of Technology (FIT).
Gaucin’s journey began humbly. “I started creating because I really wanted a pair of pants but wasn’t working at the time,” he recalls. “I decided to make them myself by cutting up old clothes – even though I didn’t know what I was doing. I had the vision and figured out how to bring it to life.” His upbringing played a key role in shaping his path. Inspired by his large, close-knit family, Gaucin’s earliest memories of fashion involve helping his grandmother in Ciudad Juárez style clothes.
This connection to fashion deepened as Gaucin observed classmates expressing themselves through clothing. Over time, his unique style – an eclectic mix of grunge, camp, punk, and elegance – began to take form. “When I was putting my pieces together, I pulled from my archives and added elements that felt punk yet elegant,” he explains.
The future of fashion is increasingly defined by sustainability, inclusivity, and innovation, principles Gaucin embraces in his work. During the February cover shoot in downtown El Paso, he transformed an empty studio into a vibrant creative space filled with technicolored heels, racks of unique fabrics, and rows of bold accessories. At just 18 years old, Gaucin directed his team with confidence and maturity far beyond his years.
“I’ve always dreamed of attending fashion school,” he says. Yet the road wasn’t easy. While classmates received college acceptance letters, Gaucin took a different route, dedicating a semester to refining his portfolio. His persistence paid off when he received his acceptance email from FIT. Initially mistaking the email for routine correspondence, Gaucin was stunned when he realized the magnitude of the news. “I dropped everything in the store to call everyone,” he says. “It got emotional when my mom hugged me. It was such a special moment.”
FIT, a global leader in creative education, boasts alumni like Calvin Klein, Michael Kors, and Nina Garcia. The institution emphasizes innovation, sustainability, and inclusivity, values Gaucin aims to uphold as he embarks on this next chapter. “It’s a big challenge, but a good one,” he says. “It’s not just a win for me; it’s a win for El Paso’s fashion community.”
Savannah
1953 to 2024
The medical team worked in perfect harmony to save Savannah, the Asian elephant, whose life was at risk due to an overgrown tooth piercing her inner mouth. The team moved with precision, as though performing a well-rehearsed ballet. Doctors conducted tests and X-rays, the anesthesiologist monitored Savannah’s oxygen levels, and a circular saw—an unexpected tool in this setting—was brought in to file down the problematic tooth. Every moment was critical; the surgery’s success hinged on Savannah waking up.
When she did, atop a soft bed of mattresses, the room erupted in cheers. For Savannah, relief came in the form of food, a momentous occasion for an elephant in pain and unable to eat.
“The whole experience was a testament to the care animals receive in accredited zoos,” says Renee Neuert, Executive Director of the El Paso Zoological Society. “Seeing people from around the world come together to help Savannah was life-changing for me.”
Savannah was more than an elephant; she was an icon of the El Paso Zoo and a cornerstone of many El Pasoans’ childhood memories. Born in 1953, Savannah held the distinction of being the world’s oldest Asian elephant in managed care. She lived at the zoo from 1997 until her death in early 2024, leaving an indelible mark on visitors and staff alike.
The Elephant Preferred Perfume
“She loved individual attention and the quality time she spent with her keepers, who loved her deeply,” says Olivia Siqueiros, Events and Social Media Manager at the zoo. “She was the star of the zoo and adored being the center of attention.”
Savannah’s presence was a symbol of the zoo’s commitment to animal welfare and conservation. Her playful antics, love for food, and endearing quirks captured hearts. Neuert fondly recalls Savannah’s affection for watermelons, pumpkins, and especially oranges. “She would squeeze oranges to make juice, rub it on her ankles like perfume, and strut around like a queen,” Neuert laughs.
Savannah’s 71 years were a testament to resilience, charm, and the bond between humans and animals. For Siqueiros, Savannah held a special
place. “She was the first animal I met when I started volunteering at the zoo over a decade ago. Her eyes and spirit made me feel like I was exactly where I needed to be,” she says. “Savannah had that effect on so many people.”
As conservationists strive to preserve biodiversity, Savannah’s story serves as a reminder of the interconnectedness of all life. Her legacy lives on through efforts to protect elephants and educate future generations. “The way to honor Savannah is by recognizing the positive impact we can have on wildlife,” says Siqueiros. “Now, more than ever, they need us.”
In life, Savannah embodied grace and strength. In memory, she inspires a commitment to conservation and compassion, ensuring that her legacy endures for years to come.

Thank you family and friends Thank you El Paso
Linda Wolfe embodies perseverance, determination, and strength. As a mother, CEO, retired U.S. Army veteran, and musician, her life illustrates resilience and the pursuit of dreams. Wolfe has overcome challenges and shattered stereotypes, becoming a beacon of inspiration to others.
“My kids are my priority,” Wolfe shares, reflecting on her son Khalid and daughter Gina. “The older they get, the more attached I feel. They’re adults now, living their lives, but you still want that closeness.”
Wolfe’s resilience was forged early, growing up in Germany with her stepmother. “I was tired of getting hit,” she recalls of standing up for herself at 16. “That was the first time I said, ‘No more.’ It marked the start of my journey to empowerment.”
THE WOLFE INSIDE
She moved to the U.S., pursuing a music career and nearly signing with Mercury Records. However, a misstep by her manager derailed her plans, leading her to the U.S. Army. As a single mother, Wolfe balanced military service and parenthood. “When I had my first child, I realized I had to step up,” she says.
Military life presented trials, from leaving her children during deployments to facing discrimination as a Black woman in a maledominated field. “Being a woman and a Black woman in the Army meant doing twice as much to prove yourself,” Wolfe explains. “But I led from the front.”
Wolfe’s service included a year in Iraq, managing logistics while enduring harsh conditions. “Living in a tent, missing my children—it was the hardest year,” she recalls. Yet, moments of compassion stood out. “A soldier cried over the cold water I gave him. It reminded me why I served—to bring hope.”
Wolfe also pursued her passion for music, performing globally as part of a military band. “I led a rock group in countries where women were oppressed. It was empowering to show what women could achieve,” she says.
MY KIDS ARE MY PRIORITY. THE OLDER THEY GET, THE MORE ATTACHED I FEEL. THEY’RE ADULTS NOW, LIVING THEIR LIVES, BUT YOU STILL WANT THAT CLOSENESS.
One of her greatest achievements was completing the grueling Air Assault School, becoming the only woman in her class to graduate. “My boots skinned my shins, but I didn’t quit,” she recounts. “The pain was worth it to prove I belonged.”
After 24 years of service, Wolfe retired, transitioning into civilian life as her son Khalid’s music career soared. “It’s hard to share him with the world,” she admits, “but I’m proud of him.”
Now, as CEO of The Great Khalid Foundation, Wolfe supports students through music education and scholarships. Reflecting on her journey, she says, “I didn’t know I’d have a child like KHALID, but I always knew I was here to bring joy. And I’m good at that.”
From the battlefields of Iraq to the global stage, Linda Wolfe’s story is one of resilience, love, and empowerment.
Multispecialty Center Transforming
An old grocery store in Central El Paso has been transformed into the El Paso Children’s Hospital Multispecialty Center (MSC), a community-driven facility offering specialized pediatric care in a familyfriendly, streamlined environment.
Historically, families in underserved regions faced significant barriers to accessing specialized care for children with complex medical needs. The MSC changes this landscape, providing a one-stop solution with numerous specialties under one roof. Led by Dr. Cindy Stout, President and CEO of El Paso Children’s Hospital, the center embodies a revolutionary approach to pediatric healthcare.
“We’ve brought all the specialists together under one roof,” explains Dr. Stout. “They consult with each other to create individualized treatment plans for patients.” This integration saves families the burden of traveling between multiple locations for care. With specialties including allergy, cardiology, dermatology, endocrinology, gastroenterology, and more, the MSC offers a holistic approach to pediatric health.
The center includes 45 exam rooms, 17 infusion rooms, and in-house audiology, laboratory, and radiology services. Dr. Stout highlights its effectiveness in addressing challenging diagnoses: “When all the physicians assess the child together and consult with parents, that’s the game changer.”
A cornerstone of the MSC is its Cranial and Facial Clinic, led by renowned surgeons Dr. David Yates and Dr. Ziyad Makoshi. Recognized by the American Cleft Palate-Craniofacial Association, the clinic offers advanced surgical interventions for children with craniofacial abnormalities, attracting patients nationally and internationally.
Dr. Makoshi explains their collaborative process: “We review scans, create 3D reconstructions, and plan surgeries meticulously.” Procedures, like those for craniosynostosis – a condition causing premature skull fusion – transform lives. “It’s an honor to operate on these kids,” says Dr. Yates.
The MSC exemplifies community-focused healthcare. Unlike for-profit or governmentfunded models, the nonprofit hospital reinvests its resources into patient care, staff support, and advanced technology. “Everything we make goes back into the hospital,” says Dr. Stout. “It’s about doing the right things for kids.”
Dr. Jarrett Howe, a pediatric surgeon at the MSC, reflects on his role in the center’s mission. “El Paso has adopted me,” he says. “This is more than work, it’s community.”
Previously, families often had to leave El Paso for specialized care, causing disruptions. The MSC now provides these services locally, reducing the need for travel and keeping families together. “We’ve significantly decreased the percentage of kids who must leave for treatment,” notes Dr. Stout.
For children in the region, the MSC is more than a healthcare facility – it’s a beacon of hope, bringing together expertise, compassion, and innovation to transform pediatric care.

Johnny Escalante and Kiki Cervantes are redefining the city’s entertainment scene as part of El Paso’s cultural renaissance. As the creative forces behind J&K Present, their journey from hosting impromptu parties to managing multiple successful businesses is a story of grit, innovation, and unrelenting passion.
We’re sitting inside Hush Hush, their latest venture near Southwest University Park. Formerly Blackbird Cantina, the duo transformed the space into a chic, transportive experience that embodies their knack for pushing boundaries. Behind the cool cocktails and stylish vibe lies a tale of determination and the relentless pursuit of excellence.
The ‘Hush Hush’ World of 122
Escalante and Cervantes met through mutual friends in the early 2000s. Cervantes, with a degree in fashion merchandising and business management from TCU, returned to El Paso to work for his family’s business but quickly realized the 9-to-5 grind wasn’t for him. Escalante, balancing work with his family’s roofing company, was equally drawn to creative ventures.
“It was like, ‘You know people; I know people. Let’s do a party and see what happens,’” Escalante recalls.
Their early events, like “The Morning After” brunch parties, were wildly successful, spilling out of small venues and into the city’s streets. Champagne, confetti, and loud music became their signature, and the momentum soon overshadowed their day jobs.
“We realized we were creating value,” Cervantes explains. “At first, it was just for fun, but eventually, we said, ‘Alright, let’s get serious.’”
What began as weekend events grew into a full-fledged business. In founding J&K Present, the duo combined Escalante’s entrepreneurial instincts with Cervantes’ creative flair, building a lifestyle brand that includes parties, merchandise, and bars.
Early challenges taught them hard lessons. “It was like gambling,” Escalante says. “We weren’t looking at costs or profits, and sometimes we lost money or got taken advantage of. But we kept going.”
Today, their portfolio includes hotspots like Later, Later, Lost & Found, and Hush Hush,
which draw locals and visitors alike. Lines around the block are a common sight on Friday nights.
Behind the scenes, the work is anything but glamorous. Managing six businesses requires planning, patience, and discipline. “People think we just show up and have fun,” Cervantes says. “But there’s accounting, HR, legal – it’s real work.”
Their partnership thrives on contrasts. “Johnny is the one who pushes things forward,” Cervantes notes, while Escalante credits Kiki’s creative vision. Together, they balance timeless design with cutting-edge experiences, constantly challenging El Paso’s cultural norms.
Family support plays a vital role in their success. Escalante’s sister Jessica calls him
“generous and funny,” qualities she’s admired since they were kids. Similarly, Cervantes’ family praises his creativity and vision.
Reflecting on their journey, Cervantes says, “The best part is taking an idea, executing it, and seeing people embrace it.” For Escalante, the joy lies in creating spaces that resonate with the community.
From day parties to thriving bar ventures, J&K Present is more than a business – it’s a lifestyle. “We turned a hobby into something bigger,” Cervantes says.
And like their latest project’s name suggests, the evolution of Escalante and Cervantes’ empire continues – loud enough to make waves, but sometimes, just “Hush Hush.”

Storytellers Breaking News & Building Community
Editorial photography by: JORDAN LICON
The word “fabulous” originates from the Latin fabula, meaning “to speak,” and evolved to describe people, places, and stories worth attention.
This month, we celebrate fabulous women storytellers shaping El Paso’s media, from morning news to radio, who weave diverse narratives that resonate with the community.
Salina Madrid and Jessica Gonzalez of KFOX14’s morning news embody the power of local storytelling. For Madrid, journalism began with mornings spent reading newspapers with her grandfather in a small village near Las Cruces. She thrives on uncovering truths and highlighting unseen voices, as seen in her series “Becoming the Badge,” which honored El Paso’s first responders.
“I love using video to tell stories,” Madrid shares. “It showcases the impact visually, and that’s rewarding.”
Jessica Gonzalez’s journalism journey began with her love for writing and an unyielding commitment to her community. After covering sports at ESPN, she returned to El Paso to report stories close to her heart, including her segment “Family First,” which focuses on education and community issues.
“We take our work personally here,” says Gonzalez. “There’s fulfillment in serving your hometown.”
Together, Madrid and Gonzalez bring their complementary strengths to the newsroom, balancing serious journalism with relatability. Their mornings mix hard-hitting news with warmth and camaraderie, forming a bond with viewers that goes beyond headlines.
KFOX14 evening anchor Liz Dueweke left rainy Seattle for El Paso’s sunlit horizons, finding a home that values her storytelling craft. Dueweke’s career began with childhood
“news reports” and led to daring assignments like skydiving with the Golden Knights.
In Seattle, she covered intense stories, including a helicopter crash that claimed colleagues’ lives. These experiences shaped her belief in journalism’s importance.
“What journalists do still matters,” Dueweke affirms. “Stories connect communities, especially in crises like wildfires.”
Dueweke now highlights El Paso’s vibrant stories, inspired by the city’s kindness and binational culture. “The friendships I’ve made here mean so much,” she says.
Univision26 anchor Viri Solano brings compassion and integrity to her role, focusing on social justice and immigration. A native of Chihuahua, Solano’s career spans 16 years, earning eight Emmys for stories that give voice to marginalized communities.
“It’s essential to stay impartial and empathetic,” Solano says. Her reporting on migration stories, such as her visit to Lordsburg with U.S. Customs and Border Protection, reflects her personal connection to the challenges faced by immigrants.
Through her work, Solano bridges cultures and strengthens community ties, ensuring El Paso’s stories are heard with dignity and respect.
As Associate Publisher of El Paso Inc., Secret Wherrett champions the enduring value of print journalism in a digital age. Under her leadership, the family-owned publication balances tradition
and innovation, keeping readers informed while exploring new opportunities.
“People still want printed products,” Wherrett notes. Beyond business, she contributes to local organizations like the YWCA and the El Paso Symphony Orchestra, celebrating excellence and community spirit.
Her journey from public relations to publishing exemplifies adaptability and a commitment to quality journalism.
Iris Lopez, a former multimedia journalist turned radio personality, nonprofit founder, and mental health advocate, shines as a storyteller committed to uplifting her
community. From her start at KVIA-TV to cohosting 93.1 KISS-FM’s morning show, Lopez prioritizes stories of joy and resilience.
“Since I was young, I’ve loved entertaining and storytelling,” Lopez says. Her signature “Sunday Funday Moments” segment brought positivity to viewers, while her nonprofit, Mija, Yes You Can, empowers women through mentorship.
Lopez’s approach to journalism emphasizes empathy. Reflecting on an emotional interview with a grieving family, she says, “We cried together—it reinforced my belief in focusing on the human side of stories.”
CopyThe journey to rock and roll stardom is rarely smooth, but for Late Night Drive Home, it’s been a lot more fun with friends by their side. This indie rock band from El Paso is making waves in the music industry, blending quirky guitar riffs, hazy melodies, and eclectic echoes reminiscent of 2000s icons like The Strokes, The Killers, and Arctic Monkeys.
Formed during their high school years, Late Night Drive Home has come a long way since its early days on SoundCloud. Frontman Andre Portillo and guitarist Juan “Ockz” Vargas, both self-taught musicians, began uploading tracks in 2019. They were later joined by Vargas’ cousin, Freddy Baca, on bass and friend Brian Dolan on drums. Their breakout single, “Stress Relief” (2021), garnered over 100 million streams, earning them a deal with Epitaph Records in 2022.
“It’s a sweet feeling to be in a rock band with friends I grew up with in high school. Sharing music across the country with those same people is something to be grateful for,” says Portillo.
With a debut EP titled “i’ll remember you for the same feeling you gave me as i slept” on the horizon and a sold-out headline tour behind them, Late Night Drive Home continues to balance global ambitions with a strong connection to their El Paso roots.
INSIDE LATE NIGHT DRIVE HOME’S JOYRIDE
The band’s rise accelerated in 2024 with a debut at Coachella, followed by performances at major festivals like Austin City Limits. Touring Europe with Yot Club this fall marks another milestone in their career.
Vargas shares how moments like meeting artists such as Lil Nas X at Coachella made their journey feel surreal yet achievable:
“It’s weird to see artists we look up to. But celebrating our first festival made everything easier after that.”
Their music-making process has also evolved, focusing on conceptual themes before crafting the instrumentals, allowing for a deeper connection between sound and storytelling. Inspired by grunge legends like Sonic Youth and modern influences like Dominic Fike, their EP embodies a cohesive, melancholic sound that channels themes of personal growth and introspection.
For the band members, the camaraderie they share is central to their success. Portillo expresses gratitude for touring with friends:
“Touring with friends makes the experience less isolating. Not many people get to explore the world like this. It’s a lot better having your friends around,” Portillo says.
Their roots in El Paso remain a key part of their identity. As Portillo explains, the band proudly represents their hometown on stage:
“We hope to shine a spotlight on local bands and elevate the music scene in El Paso.”
From humble beginnings to headlining tours, Late Night Drive Home embodies the spirit of independent artistry while celebrating the friendships and connections that fuel their journey.
CLOUDY WITH A CHANCE OF STEAM
The shape of Downtown El Paso is evolving as visitors are invited to escape the Sun City heat and embark on a journey among the clouds. La Nube STEAM Discovery Center, a multilevel masterpiece of architecture, features an undulating series of barrel vaults extending above a cloud-like canopy, supported by a sleek linear glass foundation.
La Nube is a distinctive hybrid, seamlessly merging the educational rigor of a science center with the interactive fun of a children’s museum. Focused on STEAM (science, technology, engineering, art, and mathematics), it offers immersive exhibits and programs designed to ignite curiosity and fuel the imagination of learners of all ages and abilities. Its mission is simple yet profound: to spark creativity and inspire exploration, innovation, and play.
“La Nube,” meaning “the cloud” in Spanish, symbolizes limitless possibilities and interconnectedness, aligning with the center’s ethos of creativity and discovery. As a cultural and educational hub, La Nube transcends the traditional museum experience, integrating interactive exhibits with artistic installations to foster a dynamic environment that celebrates the unique heritage of the Borderland.
La Nube’s origins trace back to a 2012 voter-approved qualityof-life bond initiative, which included funding for a children’s museum. By 2016, progress had stalled, prompting the El Paso Community Foundation to champion the project. A collaborative funding model blending bond funds, public dollars, and private donations – including a $10 million contribution from Paul and Alejandra Foster – secured $72 million to bring La Nube to life.
The journey from concept to reality is driven by a skilled and passionate leadership team:
• Stephanie Otero, Interim CEO and VP of Operations at the El Paso Community Foundation, who has championed the project since its inception.
• Karen Gonzalez, VP of Administration & Finance, ensuring financial sustainability.
• Mick Martinez, Director of Marketing & Communications, shaping La Nube’s brand.
• Miranda Diaz, VP of Talent & Culture, fostering an inclusive workplace.
• Karla Salazar, Senior VP, spearheading strategic initiatives.
• Chris Nunez, VP of Facilities & Exhibits, managing La Nube’s physical and interactive spaces.
• Alan Martinez, VP of Guest Experience & Business Operations, optimizing visitor engagement.
• Alysha Swann, Director of Community Outreach & Special Programs, nurturing community relationships.
• Deana White, VP of Learning & Experiences, crafting transformative educational offerings.
• Natalie Eckberg, VP of Development & Stakeholder Relations, championing growth through stakeholder engagement.
Their collective expertise has turned La Nube into a beacon of innovation and inclusivity for the region.
Designed by the renowned architectural firm Snøhetta, La Nube embodies “Blue Sky Thinking,” combining futuristic innovation with a strong connection to El Paso’s heritage. Local architect Elaine Molinar, a managing director at Snøhetta and El Paso native, brought her lifelong admiration for the city to the project.
The design integrates climate-conscious features like shaded groves and a cooling mist playground while reflecting the Chihuahuan Desert’s natural beauty.
La Nube is a transformative space where art, science, and culture converge, fostering creativity and learning in a uniquely bicultural and inclusive environment. It is more than a museum—it is an inspiration for generations to come, inviting visitors to look up, dream big, and reach for the stars.
EL PASO STARS SHINE IN
HOLLY WOOD
Amid the glitz of Los Angeles and stars of West Texas, few stories are as romantic, authentic, and inspiring as that of Abe Bueno-Jallad and Luly James. From their roots in El Paso, Texas, to making waves in Hollywood, this dynamic couple embodies passion, resilience, and creativity.
Abe Bueno-Jallad, an actor with a multicultural background, has captivated audiences with his versatility. Fluent in Spanish, English, and Arabic, his heritage informs his performances, making him a sought-after talent in bilingual productions. His role as “Big James” in The Chosen, a groundbreaking series on the life of Jesus with over 253 million viewers, has solidified his place in Hollywood.
“It’s easy to focus on when someone ‘arrives,’ but people often overlook the failures, trials, and errors along the way,” says Jallad.
His journey to acting is unconventional. Before Hollywood, Jallad worked in psychiatric research in New Mexico, a background that lends depth and empathy to his craft. Acting, for him, is about connecting people through storytelling, a mission reflected in his work on “The Chosen.”
Luly James, a celebrated hairstylist, grew up in Ciudad Juarez, Chihuahua, nurturing her passion for creativity and connection. Today, she works with Hollywood’s elite under the mentorship of Adir Abergel, known for styling icons like Gwyneth Paltrow and Kristen Stewart.
James approaches hairstyling as an art form. “When I get a new client, I build a mood board around who they are and what makes them feel beautiful,” she shares.
126
Her work extends from red carpets to film sets, including designing a Silver Lake chic look for Anne Hathaway in The Idea of You. Beyond styling, James is dedicated to mentoring the next generation of artists, creating educational programs and fostering community within the industry.
Their connection began in El Paso, where they were childhood friends. Years later, they reunited in Los Angeles, their friendship evolving into a partnership fueled by mutual respect and shared creative ambitions.
“It was surreal,” James recalls. “Living the dream in L.A., running into people, working hard, and making it all happen.”
Balancing demanding careers, they made time for each other through spontaneous meetups and nature escapes to Utah and Big Bend. Their bond deepened, and they are now newlyweds and proud parents.
“Our baby is such a sweetheart,” says Jallad. “He loves music and being around people. It feels like everything was meant to be.”
While their careers take them across the globe, Abe and Luly remain grounded in their roots. They hope to bring more opportunities to El Paso, where their journey began.
For James, Juarez remains a source of inspiration. “Every visit reminds me why I love
what I do,” she says, envisioning a future where she merges editorial styling with communitydriven projects.
Jallad, meanwhile, continues to thrive on The Chosen, a series that has transcended cultural and linguistic boundaries. “It’s opened me up to a whole new audience,” he says, while expressing his desire to return to theater.
As they navigate life as parents and creatives, Abe and Luly’s shared history and passion guide them. From their childhood in El Paso to the heart of Hollywood, their story is one of resilience and collaboration.
“We’ve invested in freedom: the freedom to follow our careers while staying rooted in who we are,” says Jallad.
Empowered & Unbreakable:
Celebrating A Survivor
In less than a minute, Davina Licon’s life was changed forever. Her attacker tried to kill her three times—and failed each time.
Licon, a resilient young woman and avid bodybuilder, now shares her story to shine a light on the crisis of domestic violence, an epidemic that often remains hidden in plain sight. Her journey of survival underscores both the unpredictability of such violence and the strength required to endure and overcome it.
Her resilience was first forged at the gym, a sanctuary where she honed her physical and mental strength. “In high school, I started going to the gym,” she says. “I just started lifting heavy weights, and then I started to see my body change.” Those changes became the foundation for her resilience, a well she would soon need to draw from in ways she could never have imagined.
It was an ordinary day in Hawaii when Licon left the gym, savoring the satisfaction of another solid workout. As she headed to her car, she was ambushed in the parking lot by a former
romantic interest she had not seen or spoken to in months. Armed with a gun, he caught her completely off guard.
“I was just in shock,” she recalls. “He shot, and I literally saw the bullet leave the barrel. I really thought, ‘This is it.’” Miraculously, the gun jammed. What followed, however, was equally horrific: he hurled acid at her, an act of unthinkable cruelty meant to disfigure her.
“At first, I didn’t know what he had thrown on me,” Licon says. “But then it started burning.”
Sprinting back into the gym, she began to realize the full magnitude of the attack. The man she had distanced herself from, uneasy
about his behavior, had intended not only to harm her but to leave her permanently altered.
He succeeded in changing her life, though not in the way he intended. The burns left by the acid devastated her body, melting away her skin and leaving scars that would require years of surgeries and recovery. She was placed in a coma for a week and spent three months in the hospital, enduring excruciating pain and multiple surgeries.
The attack highlighted a grim reality for women. According to the CDC, nearly 1 in 2 women in the United States will face physical violence from an intimate partner at some point in their lives. Each minute, 32 people
experience intimate partner violence. Licon’s story is a stark reminder of how rejection can provoke violence.
“Rejection is one of the most dangerous things a woman can do,” she says, reflecting on the unprovoked attack. Her observation speaks to the fear many women live with, unable to report or resist abusive behavior for fear of violent retaliation.
Today, Licon speaks openly about her experience, working with Face Forward, an organization that provides surgeries and support to survivors of violence. “I think that’s my calling,” she says. “Sharing my story has been a way to heal, and I hope it helps others know they’re not alone.”
Her attacker, currently in custody, awaits trial in Hawaii. While in jail, he orchestrated a second acid attack on another woman, carried out by an accomplice, mirroring the first attack outside a gym.
Licon remains unafraid to testify, determined to confront him in court. “I feel ready now for the court process,” she says. “I want him to see me, to see what he did to me. I’m not afraid of him. It’s nerve-wracking, but I’ll be there every step of the way.”
Her strength has inspired many. Working at a gym, she shares her story with those who ask about her scars. “When I tell them, they’re surprised, maybe a little shocked. But then they see me, still pushing, still working out. It feels good knowing I might inspire someone to keep going.”
For Licon, beauty is about resilience. “Beauty, I really believe, is within,” she says. “No attacker can take that away.” Today, she rebuilds her life, cherishing time with friends and family while preparing for her next surgery.
“You can go through something hard and come out stronger,” she says. And that strength, she proves, can inspire others to do the same.
Chardonnay the Conqueror
Cooler months have arrived and you have been thinking about putting away the Rose’ and Sparkling wines and bringing out those red “big boys” you have been waiting all summer to drink. Syrah, Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot are back in season! But one varietal, Chardonnay, has no season, and remains the one varietal that withstands all seasons. While Chardonnay was King of the Wine World in the 1990s it has recently fallen out of the lead when it comes to being ordered in restaurants behind Pinot Grigio and Sauvignon Blanc for white wine selections,
But, when it comes to the one wine that both red wine and white wine drinkers still order all year, it’s Chardonnay.
Easy to remember, affordable, and dominating the wine lists, the favorite wine of urbanites in the 1980s and 1990s has now been replaced, but is drinkable all year long.
I am here to recommend a return of Chardonnay, and urge you to shed your
By: VIC POULOS
prejudices and generalities of it simply being a novice white wine “butter bomb.”
On a recent dinner night at Thyme Restaurant, the table ordered a Ramey Chardonnay as a first wine, and to everyone’s surprise, it ended the night as the favorite of all of the many wines ordered.
Why do I call Chardonnay the Conqueror wine?
Legend has it that Emperor Charlemagne, a huge fan of red wine, ordered green chardonnay grapes to be planted so Queen Charlemagne could enjoy his unstained beard as he was overly imbibed! Since the 700s Chardonnay has endured. Long considered a mediocre wine in the U.S., a rude awakening came to the wine world on May 24, 1976 a day of wine infamy to the Europeans when a Chard from Chateau Montelena won the Judgment of Paris wine competition.
Today, many people still consider Chardonnay a novice wine drinker’s wine, while some of the best winemakers in the world consider it a blank canvas for creativity and broad flavor profiles.
Chardonnay ranges from unoaked wine fermented and stored in stainless steel, to sophisticated pear and apricot flavored wine, to the fatter oak vanilla bombs. While white burgundies reign supreme in the world of Chardonnay, Austrian Chardonnays, often called Morillon, are fantastic as are the Chardonnays of Alsace, France, Italy and Australia.
But, Chardonnay remains under-loved and misunderstood.
However, being a top “wine snob” today means you may have a preference for Chardonnays.
No grape better translates terroir, techniques and styles. This varietal both suits the unsophisticated wine masses and is also revered at high end wine auctions, and frankly, is easier on the pocketbook.
To me, Chardonnay is as much about clean green fruit aromas as it is about texture and acidity.
I prefer a crisp high acid Chardonnay that leaves me wanting a second glass. Likewise, a lighter cleaner Chardonnay pairs much better with food than one where you feel you should only use it to butter your corn! Lastly, I say YES to chardonnay from Italy. While the fifth most planted grape in Italy, it stands out as my choice of countries for Chardonnay especially if produced by Gaja from Langhe, or an Oltrepo Pavese from north central Italy.
So, you can remain a wine snob and drink Chardonnay.
Even in winter, the steely, mineral based aromatics and higher alcohol Chardonnays stand up to some of the best red wines on the market, and at half the price. Its vanilla core, creamy texture and overall easy drinkability, make it the applesauce of wine – you can’t just have one taste!
While there is a flood of mediocre Chardonnays on the market, and disappointing Chards will await you if you are not careful, wonderfully balanced ones, with oak used judiciously, hit every high note for a sophisticated wine musical. A big Chardonnay can tame many strong fish dishes and seafood soups or chowder, but it pairs well even with fried chicken or veal. Yellow corn dishes demand a creamy Chardonnay to pair with the butter, as do mango salsa dishes and of course our local favorite – nachos.
Want to try a great Chardonnay? Look for producer Gaja in Italy, Kistler or Ramey in the US or Greg Norman Estates in Australia. My all time favorite Chardonnay is the “Glories” series made by Maggie Harrison of Antica Terra Winery in Oregon.
So, let’s return to a wine we all know!
Chardonnay the Emperor.

My team and I are deeply honored and humbled to have been the ‘Best Physician Group’ in El Paso for 2024! This recognition means so much to me, not just as a professional, but as someone dedicated to supporting and improving the mental health and well-being of our community, which I love.
First, I want to thank God for giving me the skills, knowledge, determination and ability to pioneer mental health care for this great community. Secondly, I want to sincerely thank El Paso for your trust and support. Whether you have been a patient, colleague, or a member of the community, your vote is a testament to the meaningful work we do together in the field of psychiatry. This recognition would not be possible without the continuous encouragement, collaboration, and belief in the importance of mental health. Finally, I want to express my heartfelt gratitude to our staff for their dedication, hard work, and commitment that have helped us achieve this distinction. This incredible achievement is a direct reflection of their professionalism, compassion, and teamwork. Their collective effort in fostering a supportive and healing environment does not go unnoticed, and is
truly what sets us apart. Whether it's through their expertise, empathy, or unwavering commitment, each one of them plays a crucial role in our success. Together, we have created a clinic that not only delivers excellent mental health care but also upholds the values of compassion and respect that our patients deserve.
I am truly grateful for the opportunity to make a positive impact in the lives of others and to be a part of such a caring and compassionate community. I promise to continue to serve you and all those in need with the utmost dedication and commitment to excellence. As President and CEO of TMS El Paso, we remain committed to helping our patients heal and strengthen their mind, body and soul. We strive to end the stigma of mental illness by providing the most effective, evidence-based treatments in psychiatry in order to improve the overall quality of life for individuals and families, thereby making our community a better place to live.
Thank you once again for this incredible honor. I look forward to continuing this journey with you all. God Bless!
