He was sporting a new beard, and the facial hair drew much comment on radio shows and internet forums. On Newstalk, there was some debate about whether the new beard suited Roy, with some callers declaring that Keane was now the sexiest man on television. ● See Sport for more.

Give us the burgers

By RONAN BAGNALL

A LEADING charity figure in Cork has said it’s sinful to destroy 10 million burgers when people are hungry. Brendan Dempsey, regional vice president of St Vincent de Paul, (SVP), said he was confident that charities would accept some of the beef burgers that were withdrawn from shelves if they passed all food safety standards. Horse or not, don’t waste this good food says SVP chief — people are starving out there belling of the products. Patrick Wall, a professor of public health in UCD, also said today that it was sad that 10 million frozen burgers were likely to be destroyed, because DNA at a level of 29% was found in one brand of burger. He said DNA testing was so sensitive that it would pick up tiny molecules of other meats. Many of the burgers at the centre of the controversy had only traces of horse and pig DNA. Professor Wall said: “If beef meat was transported in a refrigerated vehicle that had horse or pork meat on a previous load then this could explain cross-con-

tamination of traces of DNA.” Mr Dempsey said: “It’s sinful to waste food when people are hungry. So long as the burgers come up to food safety standards and people are aware of what is in them, I wouldn’t have a problem with making them available to people.” The company at the centre of the controversy, Silvercrest Food in Monaghan, has not confirmed its plans for the withdrawn burgers. The company refused to comment today. ● See page four for more.
