HURLING By JOHN HORGAN CORK’S Shane O’Neill’s chances of taking his place in the side’s All-Ireland quarter-final clash next Sunday against Kilkenny are rated as 50/50, according to Rebels selector Kieran Kingston. The star defender sustained a hip injury during the course of the Munster final loss to Limerick and any decision on his participation against the All-Ireland champions won’t be taken until later in the week. “Shane is an injury worry for us, he has a problem with his hip and is 50/50 at this stage. He’s only doing light training and we’ll assess him at the end of the week. “He had a fantastic game against Limerick and would be a huge loss to us but we’ll give him every chance and it will be at the end of the week before we make a decision on him.’’ “He’s been outstanding this year for Cork, he’s one of the best corner-backs in the game and, coupled with Brian Murphy out of your full-back line, he would be a massive loss to us. “At best, it’s 50/50 at the moment.’’ With regards to the starting 15 for the make or break showdown with their great rivals, Kingston told the Echo that there will be no knee jerk reaction to the team’s defeat by Limerick. “We have always said that our
O’Neill is in doubt for Rebels
Hip injury leaves Bishopstown ace with a 50/50 chance of facing Cats focus is on the panel because in the modern game, as all teams have proven this year, including Kilkenny, it is a 20 man game. “We are not going to knee jerk to a huge degree because of the Limerick result. There were factors there outside of the result, the sending off for instance so we won’t be making wholesale changes. “What we are doing is keeping an eye on guys form, watch the injuries and try and select and place our team to the best effect for Kilkenny.’’ The team for Sunday is expected to be very much along usual lines although it is believed that Jamie Coughlan will come un-
der serious consideration for a start in the Cork attack. Cork replaced three forwards during the course of the loss to Limerick, Cian McCarthy, Conor Lehane and Luke O’Farrell and with Coughlan performing well for the U21s last week in their loss to Tipperary, he’s a front runner for a starting slot on Sunday. ● See more hurling on P52-53.

Liverpool shoot down Gunners’ Suarez offer
LIVERPOOL have turned down Arsenal’s latest bid for Luis Suarez. The offer of £40million – plus a pound – was immediately refused by the Anfield club. Uruguay international Suarez was today set to make his first appearance for the Reds this summer in the friendly against Melbourne Victory. He jetted to Australia on Sunday after being allowed an extended leave following his involvement with his country in the Confederations Cup. While he was away the 26-year-old spoke about the attraction of Real Madrid, and his agent Pere Guardiola has told Liverpool the player wants to play in the Champions League but will not try to force through a move. Suarez has been frequently linked with Arsenal, whose biggest spend on a player is the £15million they paid to Zenit St Petersburg for Andrey Arshavin in 2009. By exceeding the £40million mark, Arsenal’s offer means Liverpool have to inform Suarez of the offer but it does not trigger a buy-out clause.
SOCCER The Reds had previously turned down a £30million bid from Arsenal, and manager Brendan Rodgers said he “very much” expects the star to be with the club come the start of the season. Rodgers said on Monday: “There’s been a lot of speculation over the course of the close season but the reality is that he’s a player who is very much valued at Liverpool. “And unless there’s any offer that comes in that’s anywhere near his value, there’s nothing to consider. We haven’t had that.” Asked what that value was, Rodgers said: “I didn’t say we would sell him. I said that every player has a value and a worth. Doesn’t mean you’ve got to sell them.” ● See P48 for more.
