‘By time you read this I’ll be gone’ By DAVID LINNANE
“When you read this I’ll be gone.” Those were the desperate words of one father in a letter to St Vincent de Paul in Cork, before he died by suicide. In the letter the man, who was self-employed and bankrupt asked the charity to help his family after his death. Regional vice-president of St Vincent de Paul Brendan Dempsey said it was one of four such letters received by the charity in the past 18 months. Three of those who wrote the letters, died by suicide. Mr Dempsey warned that suicide is becoming more common amongst people using their services. In particular he said the self-employed were very vulnerable.
