The Goose Bumps Of Success or many years, the August issue of Today’s Charlotte Woman has focused on success … and the varied women of our city who have found this intangible, much sought-after ideal. It’s always a heady issue, full of big ideas and even bigger personalities. I’m always inspired to learn about the women who bring such ideas to fruition, to tap into their inside stories and secrets. For me, the 2014 Success Issue is the most inspiring issue of them all. Inside this month’s magazine, we cover some amazing women. Let me rephrase that. Ah-maz-ing women. The women within the 2014 Success Issue do things. Life-altering things. Things that give you goose bumps. Consider photographer Deborah Triplett, who singlehandedly created a unique Charlotte event known as Yard Art Day, with a goal of creating unity and the celebration of art, without a touch of elitism. In a matter of months, she had 1,700 Facebook followers. “I think art should be democratic, accessible and enjoyed by all — and I believe we all have that hidden creative artist within,” she says. Consider April Whitlock, who launched Fundanoodle, an educational product that is flying off shelves. Whitlock, a self-proclaimed “closet entrepreneur without an idea,” encourages women to compartmentalize in order to complete their to-do list each day … and with three children,Whitlock knows what she’s talking about. Consider Dr. Harriet Davis, who in one year managed to transform her body into a muscle machine, earning
her professional bodybuilding “card” — at the age of 43! She attributes her success to the simple act of setting goals, noting, “It’s not the goal that matters to me, it’s the journey to get there that is so fun.” Consider Diane Restaino, who transformed the tragedy of her son’s death at 20 into a passion, creating the nonprofit Joedance Film Festival in the process. The festival honors her son, Joe; raises funds for research against pediatric cancers; and supports local filmmakers. “Find what it is you are passionate about, even if no one else is,” Restaino urges. “People can sense your passion and they connect with it.” There’s Julie Staley, of Old South Studios, who sows a huge field of sunflowers each July and offers complimentary portraits to the families of children in the Carolinas who are fighting pediatric cancers. Staley says, “Every year, over 13,000 sweet children are diagnosed with cancer. I wanted to do something tangible to celebrate these tiny heroes.” Last but not least, consider Elaine Lyerly, whose 35 years of hard work with the Red Cross garnered her a chance to visit Buckingham Palace in London, where she met Prince Charles. “It was amazing to walk through the beautiful black and gold gates that I have viewed from the outside over the years and actually be on the inside,” she says. “That was a goose-bump moment!” Heard enough? Queen For A Day Red Cross Volunteer Elaine Lyerly Attends A Royal Garden Party

elmont resident Elaine Lyerly received an interesting summons this spring … an invitation “by kind permission of Her Majesty The Queen” to travel to London to meet the Royal Family. The amazing invitation — one most Americans will never experience — was in honor of 150 years of humanitarian action by the British Red Cross. Lyerly, co-founder of the communications firm Lyerly Agency, is a tireless volunteer for the American Red Cross, and was the 2012 recipient of the Harriman Award, the highest volunteer award offered from the American Red Cross. One of two American Red Cross representatives invited to attend the British Red Cross Royal Garden Party on June 12, Lyerly jumped at the chance to share tea with His Royal Highness The Prince of Wales and Her Royal Highness Princess Alexandra. Elaine She met many passionate humanitarians, including Royal guests Madame Fatima Gailani, president of Afghan Red Crescent Society, and Red Cross representatives from a variety of nations such as Kenya, Canada, the Philippines and Australia. The visit was a dream come true, and a high note on Lyerly’s vita, to boot. She was especially pleased to speak with Prince Charles, who was incidentally quite charming. “When I introduced myself to Prince Charles as a representative of the American Red Cross,” Lyerly notes, “he said, ‘Americans really know how to fundraise, we could learn a lot from you,’ which lead to an engaging conversation.”
Below, Lyerly shares the unique details about her palace visit. Q: When did you first receive the invitation to “meet the queen”? A: The invitation came in May, and actually there were two. One came from the American Red Cross CEO, to represent the United States at this event. The other one for my role as chair of the international committee of the American Red Cross Tiffany Circle, a society of women philanthropists. Q: What was your initial reaction? A: My first reaction was excitement and then I thought,“Is this for real?” My next thought was, “What will I wear?!” Q: What was the British Red Cross Royal Garden Party like? Can you describe the setting, the food, the people? A: It was amazing to walk through the beautiful black and gold gates that I have viewed from the outside over the years and actually be on the Lyerly inside. That was a goose-bump moment! We were directed through a part of the building that opened into a big courtyard, where we were surrounded by four sides of the building. At the far side of the courtyard, there were steps that went into the main floor of Buckingham Palace. That opened up into the beautiful manicured grounds in the back. It was a surprise for me to learn that Buckingham Palace sits on 40 acres of land. There is a lake, a small island and lots of gardens and trees that make you forget that you are in the middle of London. There were royal guards throughout dressed in the traditional red and black uniforms. They created the path for Prince Charles and Princess Alexandra to enter the party from the palace.

There were three tents set up on the grounds for tea. There was a main tent, a diplomatic tent and a royal tent. I had a pass to the royal tent. The food was delicious — lots of beautiful sweet treats, juice and, of course, tea. A member of the catering team was actually a student from North Carolina — what a great summer job she had! Q: How did you decide what to wear? A: That was difficult! A hat — or no hat? A fascinator — or no fascinator? They advised against heels in case there was rain. I supposed they didn’t want their lawn aerated by all those sinking heels. I opted for a floral patterned jacket and white slacks, and no hat, mainly because I had no idea where to shop for one! Q: Were you nervous to meet the Royal Family, including Prince Charles? A: I must admit that I did have butterflies. There were only about 50 people in the royal tent, where Prince Charles and Princess Alexandra came after the ceremonial portion of the afternoon. So it was a more intimate setting that was conducive to conversation. Prince Charles was very personable and interesting. He made you feel like he was very interested in you. He was much friendlier and comfortable than I imagined. Q: Tell me about your service with the Red Cross. A: I have been a Red Cross volunteer for more than 35 years. My boss at the time volunteered me for the communications committee in the Charlotte chapter and I have been involved ever since. I have served in many capacities since then: Chapter board chair, Carolinas blood board chair, national convention chair, national board of governors (chair of fundraising, communications and government relations and also as a national vice chair my last two years on the board). I also served as the national chair of the Tiffany Circle, the most successful major gift program in the history of Red Cross. Currently, I am the chair of the international committee for Tiffany Circle and responsible for its international growth. Especially meaningful for me was receiving the Harriman Award, the highest national award for a Red Cross volunteer. At the same Washington, D.C., dinner where I received the Harriman Award, Sean Penn received the international volunteer award. What a treat to share the podium with him as he was honored for his work in Haiti! Q: What do you love about working with the Red Cross, both in the U.S. and nationally? A: It is the common bond that is shared by both volunteers and staff, to be there in someone’s darkest hour, saving lives and bringing hope. To witness that — whether it is a family in your community that has lost its home to a fire, or a village in Africa that now has clean water — is life changing.

Passion fruit syrup: 1 cup simple syrup 1/2 cup passion fruit puree The cocktail: 2 ounces pepper-infused silver rum 2 1/4 ounces passion fruit syrup 1/2 ounce freshly squeezed lime juice 1/2 ounce Chambord liqueur 1 thin slice of star fruit, soaked briefly in pomegranate juice, for garnish

Pepper-infused silver rum: 2 ounces silver rum 2 habanero peppers 1 red bell pepper, cut into strips
Passion Cocktail irst, make the pepper-infused silver rum. Place the rum in a large, nonreactive container. Remove the seeds from one of the habanero peppers, and add it and the other pepper to the rum. Place the red bell pepper strips in a mortar and pestle or in a cocktail shaker and muddle just until some of the juice is released. Add the red bell pepper to the rum and allow to sit until the desired flavor is achieved, usually 45 minutes to 1 hour. Strain the rum through a fine mesh sieve back into bottles and use as desired. Next, make the passion fruit syrup. Combine the simple syrup and passion fruit puree and stir to blend. Refrigerate until ready to use.
Add the rum, passion fruit syrup and lime juice to a cocktail shaker. Add ice and shake until thoroughly chilled. Strain into a chilled martini glass. Slowly pour the Chambord down the side of the glass; it should sink to the bottom. Garnish with the star fruit.

Angie Regan, Carmen Ellis and Jennifer Branham are joint owners of this trendy South End store. With a combined background in marketing, retail and finance, they are a powerhouse of business smarts that’s made Boulevard a retail fixture in Charlotte for over seven years. Regan says,“Boulevard got its name because we want our customers to feel as if they are walking down a boulevard of shops.” Originally located in NoDa for five years, Boulevard moved to South End over two years ago. As South End’s restaurant, bar and retail presence grows, Boulevard continues to thrive. The shop succeeds in part because of the value it places on its 40-plus local vendors, which the owners refer to as “partners.” These vendors offer handmade items such as jewelry, gifts, artwork, home décor and furniture. Branham says, “We call them partners because we are all in this together! The Boulevard would not exist if we didn’t have their creativity.” A few of the store’s offerings include Swan Creek soy candles, and items by jewelry designers Bly Design, Eclectic Orchid, Created Beautifully, Ellie’s Bijoux and Jewels by Julia. Boulevard strives to sell items that are $100 or less, and to offer new items weekly. In addition to selling unique local items, the three women take care to make sure the store is a place people

want to come back to again and again. Branham says owning a retail store is challenging. “We hold two to three events every month to build our customer base. Additionally, word of mouth has been wonderful for us, as has social media. We are on Facebook,Twitter, Pinterest and Instagram every day.� The women admit that balancing home life with business can be a challenge, but each understands the importance of attending school activities, after-school sports and, in general, spending time with family. Another challenge is competing with the everpresent competition of online shopping, but the women of Boulevard take comfort in knowing there is something special about shopping at a brick-and-mortar store. he 14th annual Links for Lupus Golf Tournament is Aug. 25 at Cedarwood Country Club, to benefit the Lupus Foundation of America, North Carolina Chapter. Jazzed Up At The Stage Door Theater harlotte’s Jazz Arts Initiative’s wildly successful monthly series — The Jazz Room @ The Stage Door Theater — kicks off its third season with a performance featuring Lynn Grissett playing Lee Morgan Aug. 22. here was a time in history when women were encouraged to keep it simple, stupid. Dreams such as becoming a doctor or entrepreneur were discouraged. Athletics was predominantly for the boys. Have a family, and a career? Never! Thankfully, those days are a thing of the past — and that is an understatement. Women of today are proving they can have it all, and then some. Many juggle a hectic workload with the needs of children (and spouses). Others have full-time careers and fulltime passions. Still others are determined to save the world. They launch new products, right worldly wrongs, take on the impossible. In essence, they refuse to hear the word “no.” In the dogged search for both success and happiness, one thing has become evident: Women possess an inherent ability to juggle a whopping amount of responsibilities and still land on their feet, day after day after day. Here, meet four such Charlotte individuals who never imagined “they couldn’t.” From a doctor who does double duty as a professional athlete, to a mother of three who launched a national product, to an environmentalist, to the creator of a nonprofit that raises funds for rare pediatric cancers — these women are revealing what achievement looks like in vastly different corners of the world. unning a thriving startup is no small feat. Throw in three children, and life can get hectic in a heartbeat. But not for April Whitlock, CEO of Fundanoodle, an education readiness program designed to build and improve fine motor skills. This Charlotte mom has found a way to be successful while raising three young children. Fundanoodle offers a full product line that ranges from writing tablets to multi-activity kits. The product is available at Toys “R” Us, from online retailers and directly from the company’s website. Whitlock began her career with Grey Advertising in Chicago, then returned to Charlotte to work with Lending Tree. Next, she launched the Charlotte office of Mom Corps, where she was recruited for a marketing role with Carolina Pad, a wellknown supplier of school and office products. In each of her previous jobs,Whitlock learned something that she now uses to manage Fundanoodle. She gained valuable expertise in advertising and marketing, which is essential to running her business, but she says her position with Lending Tree proved the most helpful. “My first startup experience with Lending Tree is the foundation I go back to,” she says. “With the unpredictability of the economy, I learned that everything has to change. You can have a five-year vision, but often those plans don’t work out. It’s better to work in 90-day increments. This has served me well as a mom and as the CEO of a startup.” Whitlock describes herself as a “closet entrepreneur without an idea.” While overseeing Fundanoodle for Carolina Pad, she realized that it was a great product that would work well on its own, so she began to write a business plan. “I knew I was on the right track when the owner of Carolina Pad said he wanted to be my first equity investor,” she says. “In 2013, I raised the capital needed to make Fundanoodle an independent company.” She has enjoyed a fruitful first year. Now, Whitlock wants to
get Fundanoodle products into classrooms. “Teachers love our products, and they are very costeffective,” she says. “They could easily be funded by parent groups.” Her family’s involvement — and enjoyment — with Fundanoodle contributes to her success. She says the product is everywhere in her home. “My children are testers, models and muses,” she notes. “The coolest part for me is when they get excited to see our products advertised or on a store shelf. I want them to see that they can do anything.” Whitlock offers advice for managing the demanding roles of CEO and mom. “Compartmentalize,” she says. “If you have three hours for work, everything else is off the table. Then stop and deal with your family.” She also says it’s important to lean on others. “My husband is amazing and flexible, and I rely on so many of my friends. They are generous with their time and willing to help.” Whitlock also takes care of herself, and makes exercise an important part of her day. “I learned very early that I’m not nice if I don’t sweat it out. Not only can I clear my head, think and brainstorm, one of the best ways to hold a business meeting is to walk the greenway with other female entrepreneurs.” Whitlock also makes time to do things she loves, like attending Broadway Lights shows with friends and exploring uptown Charlotte with her family. She adds, “My faith is important to me. I have to trust that this is the plan God wants for me, and that He will get me through the bumps.” Whitlock realizes the importance of taking care of her community, as well. She finds fulfillment in volunteering and looks for places that Fundanoodle can make a difference, which is one reason she partners with The Lunch Project and Project Lift. “I’m a social entrepreneur, which means I’m creating a company that has a culture of embassy and philanthropy. I believe in the triple bottom line: evaluate your process for profit, what you’re doing for people and for the planet. This model is going to change the world.” — Nicole Ayers

any people around the world dream of becoming a doctor. Dr. Harriet Davis dreamed of becoming a professional athlete — and in early July, just days before her 43rd birthday, she made that dream a reality, earning her IFBB pro card in the bikini bodybuilding division of the 2014 National Physique Committee Team Universe Championships. “I am still on cloud nine,” says Dr. Davis, a family medicine physician at Carmel Family Physicians. “I have been dreaming about earning my IFBB pro card for just a little over a year. It feels absolutely amazing to have reached this goal. This has proven to me that dreams really do come true when you persevere!” An avid athlete and marathon runner, Dr. Davis decided in 2013 to start competing in bodybuilding. The decision came in part after the Salisbury native transitioned from a vegan to a raw-vegan diet, and began to notice changes in her body that she did not like. “Despite my healthy lifestyle and plant-based diet, I started to notice less muscle definition in my legs, and more adipose tissue,” she says. “So, after many attempts to get back ‘in shape’ — and runninginduced injuries — I became frustrated.”
In December 2012, she hired a vegan nutritionist and personal trainer, and discovered that her diet was the culprit for her physique changes: She was consuming a high carbohydrate/low protein diet. “After a few weeks of dietary modifications, my body responded to the new fitness training and rapidly began to transform,” Dr. Davis says. “Being the goal-oriented person that I am, I developed a desire to start competing in the bikini division of bodybuilding.” Six months later, after intense personal training, Dr. Davis entered her first NPC competition. She placed third in her class — the Masters bikini 35+ — and seventh in the open bikini class. Her recent success at the Team Universe Championships in Teaneck, N.J., was icing on the cake. Dr. Davis has been a doctor since 2003. A graduate of UNC Chapel Hill School of Medicine, she has been with Carolinas Healthcare System since 2007. These days, the busy doctor juggles her workload with a strenuous workout schedule, and the needs of a family, to boot. She says her dream wouldn’t have become a reality without the help of her supportive husband, whom she deems her best friend. “I would not be able to juggle my rigorous schedule or balance work and fitness training without the selfless support of my husband,” she says. “My husband preps all of my meals and keeps my schedule straight! God takes care of the rest … I don’t know how else to explain it.” At work, Dr. Davis strives daily to make a difference in

someone’s life. She encourages others to be active, and attempts to inspire optimal health and well-being. She teaches about the benefits of being vegan, noting that it’s not difficult to get all the protein you need from a vegan diet. “I consume over 100 grams of protein a day,” she says. “Nearly all vegetables, beans, grains, nuts and seeds contain protein. Contrary to popular belief, it isn’t difficult for you to meet the daily recommendations for protein on a plant-based diet.” Successful on many levels, Dr. Davis still continues to set goals for herself. “Success is having the courage to keep trying despite the adversities and obstacles of life,” she says. “It is realizing your purpose, pursuing your dreams with passion, and finding contentment.” She notes that meeting her goals is not the only part of the process that brings her happiness. “I’m a goal-oriented person, and I always have my eye on a goal, whether that’s writing a book, running another marathon, improving my blog, earning my pro-card, or hosting my own TV show (for Health & Wellness),” she says. “I have accepted that I am the type of person who will always be striving for something; the type of person who enjoys a challenge and who enjoys the journey. It’s not the goal that matters to me, it’s the journey to get there that is so fun.” — Karsen Price

ometimes, when people suffer a personal tragedy, they take the pain and transform it into something that makes a positive impact on the world. Diane Restaino did exactly that after losing her son, Joe, in January 2010 to a rare pediatric cancer at age 20. After Joe passed away, the Restaino family worked hard to create a special way to honor him. Watching movies together had always been something the family had been passionate about, and thus, the Joedance Film Festival was born. Joedance, a play on words on the popular Sundance Film Festival, started small but mighty at the 10th Street Townhomes Courtyard in the Fourth Ward Neighborhood in 2010. The first year, it was an intimate gathering of several families and friends to remember Joe and his love of films. About $900 was raised for pediatric cancers, and a special tradition had begun. Fast-forward a few years, and the small gathering in a neighborhood courtyard has turned into a bonafide Charlotte event. In August 2013, just three years after the inaugural festival, Joedance had become a two-night affair, with 125 people per night paying to attend to screen films from local filmmakers. Joedance’s mission is twofold: to raise awareness and funds for rare pediatric cancers, and to support the local film community. In 2013, the organization raised $20,000 for Levine Children’s Hospital, where Joe received his treatments, and has funded its first research project under the direction of Dr. Peter Anderson. While the festival is still held in the 10th Street Townhomes Courtyard, its reach is widespread throughout the Charlotte community. The organization holds several events throughout the year

to build excitement and raise money for the film festival. One such event is bringing Modern Salon and Spa to Levine Children’s Hospital to pamper the mothers on the cancer floor. Restaino says, “We place an emphasis on helping the families that are currently going through what my family endured years ago, as well as funding research for a better way to treat cancer.” Her personal connection to the cause is what makes her such an impactful leader. That said, starting a nonprofit is not something to take lightly. Restaino’s advice for others who are considering starting their own organization is to, first and foremost, be passionate about the cause. “Find what it is you are passionate about, even if no one else is,” she says. “People can sense your passion and they connect with it.” She adds, “We started Joedance to make a difference by supporting research for rare pediatric cancers that are underfunded. This was our passion in memory of our son … not just for Joe, but for those who will be diagnosed with a rare cancer in the future. This is our fifth year, and the second year in a row that we have shown original films. I think Joedance has so many possibilities to grow.” When asked the secret to Joedance’s success, Restaino says simply, “It’s nothing more than getting the word out, raising awareness, opening up our hearts and telling Joe’s story.” To learn more, visit Joedance.org. — Jackie Andolino Fogartie
JENNY VALLIMONT architect and environmentalist he term “fearless leader” is one that is oftentimes used in jest, perhaps because it originated on the “Rocky and Bullwinkle” cartoon show. But when Jenny Vallimont, one of Charlotte’s young business professionals, won the Fearless Leader award at the U.S. Green Building Council’s 2013 Green Gala, it was no joke. Fearless Leader is the highest honor awarded at the USGBC North Carolina Awards, and it’s just one of many successes that Vallimont has enjoyed over the course of her career. She currently serves as director of innovation and sustainability for Crescent Communities — “This job is a dream scenario for me,” she says — and is passionate about helping both people and the environment. Vallimont traces her trajectory from sunny California, where the green movement gained traction, to the Carolinas. Fresh out of school with a degree in architectural engineering, she went to Los Angeles in 2003 to work for a general contractor. When she and her husband decided they wanted to head back to the East Coast, she took a job with Crosland, then with Bank of America’s sustainability team, and ultimately with Crescent. As an architectural engineer, Vallimont holds LEED accreditation (which stands for Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design), and is a member of the Urban Land

“My goal since I was a little girl has been to figure out how to develop a career and use my skill sets to give back to people,” she adds. “My true passion has always been giving back in every way I can.” Her civic engagement and work with local nonprofits is a testament to this passion. Vallimont chairs the board of directors for the ACE Mentor Program, which mentors highschool students with the goal of encouraging the pursuit of careers in architecture, construction and engineering. Hundreds of students learn about these industries through the guidance and real-life examples that the ACE program provides. For Vallimont, there’s nothing more fulfilling than that. She also finds satisfaction in her personal passion for the environment, which is rooted in her memories of childhood trips to the Blue Ridge Mountains, and time spent on various rivers and at summer camp. Today, that passion and connection to the outdoors is a family affair. Vallimont and her husband recently took their two young children on a 10-day trip to Costa Rica, where they spent time “off the grid.” When Vallimont and family are closer to home, they stay busy outside, kayaking, hiking and just spending time in nature. “My career is the collision of where the environment and social impact come together,” she concludes. “It’s highly invigorating. Institute. She is responsible for ensuring that each Crescent community is built to environmental standards that fit the bill for sustainability, now and in the future. But that’s only the beginning, she says. “I get to be creative and decide how you push a company to the next level.” What exactly does that look like on a day-to-day basis? “I take on the responsibility to integrate the concept of sustainability into our organization at every level,” Vallimont explains. “At a corporate level, it’s first defining what sustainability means for our organization. People hear the word and have different understandings of it.” As a result, Crescent Communities has developed five pillars of what sustainability means. Along with the environment, the pillars include health, happiness, community building and longterm growth. That’s big picture,Vallimont explains. On a daily basis, she works with all the projects, and it is ultimately her responsibility to make sure they all get certified and live up to the company’s sustainability goals. “This means continuing to ask the hard questions throughout the organization,” she says. “It means that we’re not just saying we’re a green company, but that we really are.” Vallimont attributes her successes to the authentic relationships she’s created within her community and within her network. “It’s about having real relationships with people and having people to call upon to help you. I’ve had some wonderful advocates within my career,” she says.

ith a master’s degree in social work, Sodoma Law’s Nadia A. Margherio is uniquely sensitive to the needs of her clients as they struggle to navigate the trauma and turbulence of divorce. “I understand family law not only as a lawyer, but also as a counselor,” Margherio says. “The skill set derived from my social work experience allows me to empathize with families going through transition, and helps me reinforce where the focus needs to be — on the children.” Sodoma Law isn’t your typical law firm. Launched by Nicole Sodoma in 2008, the firm places an emphasis on assisting families through life-altering transitions. “We are a boutique law firm in the sense that we don’t generate high numbers of clients — we are more interested in generating quality work,” Margherio says. Margherio is no stranger to the courtroom, but she works hard to resolve her clients’ issues outside of court. “No one wins by stepping into a courtroom,” she says. “It’s emotional, it’s exhausting, and children — no matter how young — always know that mommy and daddy are fighting over them. My preference is to resolve the issues through mediation, but that may not always be possible. I’m happy to fight it out in court if necessary, but that should be a last resort.” She strives to keep the children of her clients protected from the turmoil swirling around them. “I’m a mother of three who went through a divorce myself,” she reveals. “I know what my clients — both men and women — are going through. I
pride myself on keeping the focus on the child for all the right reasons. I caution the parents to stop and think before making decisions, and to consider how those decisions will impact the children.” She frequently serves as a court appointed Guardian ad litem in highconflict custody cases. “Oftentimes, parents forget the emotional impact their separation and divorce is having on their child,” she says. “As a Guardian ad litem, I represent the children in court and look out for their best interests. It is my goal to keep the child out of the conflict.” Margherio is also a certified Parenting Coordinator, which is a lawyer or mental health professional that has been specially trained and approved by the court to serve as a liaison to the parents. In high-conflict cases, clients could benefit from a Parenting Coordinator to help manage conflict and avoid returning repeatedly to the courtroom. “As a court-recommended Parenting Coordinator, I help parents interpret the court order, reduce the stress of the divorce and better communicate with one another as co-parents.” As stressful as her job may seem, Margherio enjoys helping clients work through their separation and divorce as amicably as possible and successfully transition into their new lives. “I love coming to work every day,” she says. “I enjoy helping people get though this difficult transition in their lives. It’s life changing for them. If I can make it easier on them and their children, then I feel that I have done my job.” [TCW]

obin Smith-Salzman is a fixture in the Lake Norman community, and the epitome of success, with a former career in radio, and not one, but two car dealerships — Lake Norman Chrysler Dodge Jeep Ram, and Gastonia Chrysler Dodge Jeep Ram. But for Smith-Salzman, it’s the little things that count … from her fourlegged friends, to her children and grandchildren, to making her 175 employees feel important. “We especially enjoy being hands on with our employees,” Smith-Salzman says. “What I love most about our dealerships is that we are large, in that we do a lot of business — sales and service — but we can run them like a family business. I like to make sure that our employees know that they are not only important to us for what they do at work, but that their personal lives are important to us, too.” Smith-Salzman didn’t grow up dreaming of owning a car dealership. She obtained a biology degree in hopes of being a doctor, and somehow parlayed that into a career in radio with CBS in Orlando. The automotive dream belonged to husband Jack, and 11 years ago, Smith-Salzman decided to give it a try. The couple purchased the Lake Norman dealership 11 years ago, and last year added another in Gastonia. “His love is automotive, and my love is marketing and advertising,” she says. Smith-Salzman also enjoys meeting with customers, especially a group known throughout the dealership as “lifers.” “These customers have been doing business with us for years,” she
explains. “Most have purchased multiple vehicles and allow us to service their cars year after year. We feature them in our television campaigns and enjoy visiting with them in the dealership. Many come in every Saturday for their free carwash and cup of coffee!” Despite her success, Smith-Salzman has faced many obstacles over the years. “When our daughter was 7 years old, we found out she had a brain tumor,” she says. “There have been many times over the years that, when confronted with challenges, I’ve told myself, ‘This is nothing compared to what she went through back then as a child.’ Her strength then, and now, inspires me to always do the best that I can do and to make the most of the opportunities I have been given.” Keys to Smith-Salzman’s success are varied. Her love of giving back to the community is noteworthy — from the women’s shelter, to Make-A-Wish, to local organizations that help animals such as the Humane Society. She defines herself as an “A-type personality” and admits she loves to win. She is a good communicator and listener, and organized. One weakness is taking on too much at one time, and she says she is still trying to “learn that balancing act thing.” She offers advice to local women in search of their own path to success. “Be open to change,” she says. “I graduated with a biology degree and wanted to be a doctor … found my way somehow into radio … had a great career, and then moved on so that my husband could realize his dream. She was a flight attendant before landing upon her current vocation. Kuznicki enrolled in the New York Institute of Art and Design in 2013. These days, she’s happily redesigning unique spaces, including a Bessemer City farmhouse. She has found success is discovering the real “you,” and working to make that vision a reality. “Success may require that you work hard to find out who you are first,” she says. “Only you can determine your own success.” Kuznicki is determined to accommodate every client, and has a flair for designing spaces for men. “Men love a space for themselves — whether it be a stodgy cigar room or a utilitarian garage. I love that challenge!” she says. She encourages Charlotte women to tap into their ambition and motivation. “Don’t be afraid of the word ‘no.’ You will get a lot of ‘no’s’ before you get a ‘yes,’ so keep pushing forward. hen Deborah Triplett decided to create a unique art event — known as Yard Art Day — she was feeling a little ambitious. OK, a lot ambitious. “I began Yard Art Day back on Labor Day 2012 — and was nervy enough to have it on the first day of the Democratic National Convention,” Triplett admits. “And I was thrilled with not only the number of participants, but the volume of those joining the project.” Turns out, her timing was impeccable. Over 250 people participated. “I had people outside of Charlotte and even outside the state participate. One person was as far west as Colorado,” she says. “And the Facebook group page was astounding. Within 24 to 48 hours, I had over 500 members. Now the group membership is up to over 1,700.”

Triplett is a self-employed Charlotte photographer and a selfproclaimed lover of “junky fun yards,” or what is known as “outsider art.” Outsider art, by definition, is used to describe self-taught, raw artforms, and according to Triplett it can be anything from a bubble-gum sculpture to “the wonderful blue bottle village done by ‘Grandma Prisbrey.’ ” Triplett got the idea for Yard Art Day from an art show that was advertised online in New York City. The show featured art hanging along the walls of Times Square. “I thought — proverbial lightning bolt idea! — ‘Why not do this in people’s front yards?’ ” she recalls. “I started Yard Art Day for many reasons,” she adds. “One, because I love those nutty people who do whatever they wish creatively in their front yards. Two, I was raised a frontyard kid and thought that anything that promotes people getting out of their backyards into the front and meeting their neighbors would have
to be a good idea. Three, and this for me is probably the most important, I think art should be democratic, accessible and enjoyed by all — and I believe we all have that hidden creative artist within.” In essence,Triplett hoped to create an event that united neighborhoods … without creating the sense of competition so many events rely upon. “Overall, I wanted to do something
that allowed anyone of any age, any race, any level of expertise to creatively play in their front yard. No judgment, no awards, no fees — just simple creating,” she says. For instance, people can wrap a tree in fabric, stand and recite poetry, show off their hula-hoop skills, build a totem, hang a photograph … the list goes on and on. “Any type of creative expression is allowed,” Triplett says. For Triplett, it’s not all fun and art. The event creates an enormous amount of work for her; in addition, she needs to raise funds to help with the cost of signage, among other things. “My main challenge is that I do this by myself,” she says. “I’m a selfemployed photographer and find it difficult each year to devote the amount of time and energy that it takes to pull this off. It takes quite a bit of devotion to not only promote the event but also do a map, design and arrange for Yard Art Day signs.” Everyone who participates gets their home or business on the YAD

This year, she is looking for sponsors who would like to help with the signage cost, which can be around $2,500. She is expecting 250 participants in 2014 — but hoping for 500. Despite the workload, Triplett considers the unique event a worthy way to spend her time. “I believe the need to create is within all of us … that it’s how we sort out our lives, our world,” Triplett says. “This quote by Magdalena Abakanowicz says it best: ‘Art will remain the most astonishing activity of mankind born out of struggle between wisdom and madness, between dream and reality in our mind.’ Just consider the famous caves of France with their prehistoric art. Some might think of art as a luxury. I disagree. I think it is a necessity and part of our DNA as human beings.” [TCW]

The Trendy Choices In Today’s Appliances n an “I Love Lucy” episode from the 1950s, Lucy Ricardo begs her husband for a clothes dryer, to which the frugal Ricky Ricardo responds,“I can’t afford it.” She spends much of the episode trying to prove why he should buy her a dryer — her first. Thankfully, a dryer is not an exotic appliance that homeowners consider a novelty worth fighting over these days. But if you are looking for the latest in appliances, or simply yearning to make your life easier, there are many trendy, new items on the market, from convection ovens to towel warmers to dryers that can get clothes dry in 14 minutes flat.

From there, she suggests owners go for all the bells and whistles. “I’d have to say the hot items right now are the Wolf or Thermador convection/steam ovens,” she says. “You can cook anything from bread to a whole chicken! Also, induction cooktops are becoming more popular. They heat up faster than gas, you can control the heat like gas, and are more energy efficient.” That’s just the beginning. Carlay says the list of swanky appliances and luxury items available to homeowners today is long and distinguished. “Good lighting, heated bath floors, towel warmers and well-designed grab bars are paramount,” she says. “Homeowners can also consider accessible design elements like wider doorways and level floors. Universal design standards should be researched and applied where possible.” Carlay notes that homes are not as large as they were a few years back,
and this makes organization a challenge, especially in kitchens and bathrooms, which are typically organizational challenges in the first place. “In general, house sizes have come down in the past few years, so it’s important to maximize the storage with good organization,” Carlay says. “There are many clever storage items that can be employed. Items that I always recommend are roll-out trays or shelves, spice racks, tray dividers and pull-out trash containers.” She adds, “Some less popular but interesting items include: a step stool in a toe-kick space, plate trays that are inside the cabinet but can be picked up and carried with a handle, and double-tiered cutlery trays that stack on top of each other in a drawer.” Eloise Hale, with Electrolux North America, says home owners are yearning for organization and simplicity. Electrolux, though known for years as a maker of vacuum cleaners, is actually an industry leader in appliances, offering many types of products at a variety of price points, from the Frigidaire to the Electrolux brand. The company focuses on consumer insight and consumerdriven innovation, and likewise, Hale
is well aware what’s hot now. “Organization is incredibly important to consumers,” she notes. “They want flexibility to move shelves and baskets of their refrigerators and stand-alone freezers to meet their individual family needs. We have also found through research that consumers want simple innovation and simple controls; they turn away from over-embellished or difficult-to-use features.” Hale suggests that families looking to save time and money should consider purchasing a secondary freezer, which are available in sleek, modern colors such as slate, and can be transformed from a freezer to a refrigerator with the flip of a switch. “Extra storage space and organization means families spend less time and money at the store and more time at home,” she says. “When it comes to savings, research shows a Frigidaire Upright or Chest Freezer that costs $750 or less can pay for itself in less than one year.” As for clean clothes, Electrolux offers top-of-the-line options in frontload washers, and Lucy Ricardo’s coveted dryer. “Home owners often tend to overlook the importance of the

she says. We asked three Charlotte life and wellness coaches for tips on what little actions can make the biggest impact when it comes to being satisfied with your life. According to these experts, successful women:
That is true whether it’s swimming, running, kickboxing, yoga or just walking around the block. And you don’t have to commit to one long session, Carlomagno says. “Ten or 15 minutes here and there is enough to keep your heart healthy,” she says.
Don’t diet. Start the day with breakfast. “Eat a healthy breakfast to get the day started and keep your energy up,” advises Maureen Carlomagno, a Charlotte health and wellness coach. “Your body has been in a state of rest and repair. Eating breakfast helps to restart metabolism.” In fact, studies show eating a morning meal helps you maintain a healthy weight.
Schedule downtime. “Taking regular breaks for self-reflection and relaxation helps prevent burnout,” says Carlomagno. “Research shows if you don’t give yourself breaks, you’re not as creative or flexible. Plus, taking a break from work improves your productivity. You need to give your brain a chance to disconnect and look at projects with fresh eyes.”

“Some form of physical activity will provide the benefits that are needed to stay in shape and essentially healthy,” says Crystal Green, Ph.D., a Charlotte-based career and health coach. “You don’t have to think of it as a formal routine — think of it as having fun and simply moving.”
“Successful women realize that diets simply don’t work,” Green says. “What does is purposefully selecting healthy food that will sustain you, not only through the day but throughout your life.” That means cutting out sugary and fatty snacks and choosing more nutrient-dense foods. “Although it sounds like a lot, eight or more half-cup servings of vegetables and two pieces of fruit a day is commonly recommended,” says Jennifer Tremblay, a certified health coach in Charlotte. “Half of your plate should be comprised of fruits and vegetables.”
Make time for sleep. “Sleep plays an important role in recharging both our physical and mental
health, in addition to aiding in weight control,” Green says. Although specific sleep needs vary from person to person, most experts suggest an average of seven to eight hours a night, she says. To be sure that happens, rid your bedroom of electronic equipment, such as laptops and even cell phones. “The backlighting on these devices stimulates the brain, making you feel alert and awake,” says Carlomagno. “Switching off all devices an hour before bed is a good way to unwind and prepare yourself for sleep.”

Expect stress — and learn to deal. Finding ways to manage your reaction to stress is the best way to cope with the inevitable tensions of modern life. “Working out, meditating, deep breathing exercises, yoga or a full-body massage are just a few techniques that successful women use to move beyond temporary, stressful situations,” Green says. In the day-today rush, schedule extra “transition” time to allow for setbacks like stalled traffic. “Managing time is one of my clients’ biggest stressors,” Carlomagno says. Give yourself a little buffer, she says, and you won’t have to sweat so hard.
Laugh a lot. When was the last time you had a good belly laugh? If you can’t remember, download an old “Friends” re-run or see the big, summer comedy on the big screen. “Laughter is healthy for the body, mind, heart and soul,” says Tremblay. “A good laugh burns calories, strengthens your core, lifts your spirits and lowers your blood sugar.”
“You may be good at multitasking and getting a lot accomplished in a short period of time, but that rushing around taxes your body,” Tremblay says. At least once a day, she suggests, quiet your mind and create a sense of calm — write in a journal, take a walk in nature or listen to music, for instance. The benefits: enhanced creativity, greater focus and even weight loss. [TCW]

The event, known as Field of Dreams, offers hope and compassion to families of children who are diagnosed with cancer. Each summer, Old South Studios sows a huge field of sunflowers, and invites families in North and South Carolina who are experiencing childhood cancer to come out and enjoy a night of complimentary family portraits among the flowers. This summer, the event was held July 7. Featured here is Caroline, who attended the first Field of Dreams in 2011 as a very sick little girl; three years later, she is blooming with health.
