Love Lessons hen it comes to February, I expect chocolates on Valentine’s Day, and nobody gets hurt. Other than that,I’m not one of those terribly romantic women who demands lots of pampering and goodies just because the second month of the year has hit the calendar. The fact of the matter is, these days, I tend to define “love” differently than I did, say, at 15, or 21, or even 30 years old. At 41, when I think of love, I don’t think of diamonds, or frou-frou cards, or men in general. Nope. I think of my daughter. To be sure, there are women who were born to have a houseful of children; and there are women who were born to be independent for life. I am friends with both types of women; in fact, most of my closest friends did not take the motherhood route. I firmly believe you can have a rich, meaningful, and happy existence without having a child. I always thought I could have gone either way … until I had a kid of my own. But since July 6, 2003, there has been no going back for me. Everything changed on that day, and I’m not ashamed to admit it. I’m in fullblown, four-alarm love with my daughter. When I look at that growing little 9-year-old,with her bright, blue eyes and six-pack abs and long, strong legs … when I experience the full power of her back-handspring and her even more powerful wit … I feel full to bursting with love. I can’t help but wonder if she has any idea how amazingly perfect she is at this very moment in time. With that said, there are a few things I’ve learned from life with one 9-year-old Peyton Price:

W

Today’s Charlotte Woman | February 2013 4

1) You can never be too busy. It doesn’t matter if you got up at 6 a.m.for a five-hour gymnastics meet, complete with a chaotic awards ceremony, and a two-hour drive home through the city of Greenville,S.C.,no less. InThe Land of Peyton, the minute you walk in the door, boredom sets in. So get busy! 2) Kid shows can be entertaining. Have you ever seen Beck from “Victorious”? Enough said. 3) Candy should be the fifth food group. And that little place in your stomach that stays empty no matter how much real food you eat? That’s the Dessert Zone. It is a scientific fact that nothing will fill it, except for — you got it — dessert. 4) Questions are a good thing. I mean, how can you learn everything you need to know without asking questions? No one is born knowing everything, right? Wouldn’t it be neat, though, if someone was born knowing everything? Wonder what that person’s name would be? Do you think it would be Miranda? 5) It’s OK to make things happen. Everybody needs to be in charge of filling his or her own happiness quota. And that means, sometimes you have to push for what you need. (Really, really push!) The truth is, no one else can make your life fulfilling, or interesting, or exciting. It’s up to each of us to fight for what we want … and it’s up to the rest of the world to either say no, or to bend to our powerful will. Go girl power!

Love Me, Love My Dog But Don’t Forget About Mother Earth et obsessed, anyone? In the United States, the answer is a resounding yes. Americans will spend approximately $51 billion on their pets in 2013. While all that love is a good thing, the truth is, much of those dollars contribute to waste in the environment. According to Heidi Ganahl, CEO and founder of Camp Bow Wow, you can reduce your doggie’s carbon paw print this year with just a little forethought and care. Consider these tips:

P

• It takes 1,000 years for a plastic bag to decompose, regardless of whether it is full of poop or not! Opt for eco-friendly options when cleaning up after your pet, including biodegradable bags made of cornhusks. • Purchase stainless steel or ceramic food bowls for your pet instead of plastic ones. These last longer and don’t have to be replaced as often.

• Humanely reduce the pet population by spaying/neutering your animals, and likewise reduce the stress that animals place on the environment. • Animals are not a trend. When you purchase a pet, you are making a serious commitment — much like deciding to have a child. People who are not fully committed often wind up giving the animal to a shelter, increasing the overwhelming population of homeless animals. Be part of the solution, not the problem.

Today’s Charlotte Woman | February 2013

• Choose grooming products made with natural ingredients instead of harmful chemicals, and request that groomers use natural products. It’s safer for your pet and the planet.

eeling sad lately? It may be the weather. As days get shorter and colder, many women suffer from Seasonal Affect Disorder,or SAD (a fitting name!). Those blues are not just in your head; the lack of sunlight has been proven to upset the sleep-wake cycle and alter serotonin levels, which in turn affects mood. Dr. Beth Golden, a spiritual counselor and the author of “Golden Solutions For Change,” works with women to help them understand and rid themselves of SAD. She offers the following tips:

• Avoid the problem by using full spectrum lights at home and at work. • No woman is an island. Get out of the house and socialize with friends … regular doses of love and laughter can help. • Get regular exercise to increase serotonin levels. “Golden Solutions for Change” can be found at amazon.com.

Author Lori Shea Encourages Independence By Melinda Johnston | Photos By Michael C. Hernandez Shot On Location At Hart Witzen Gallery

Charlotte commercial real estate analyst and author Lori Shea, 34, has never been married. Though she’s now two years into a steady relationship, she has struggled for years with what she felt was the social stigma of being single. Her personal accomplishments are impressive. In the past few years, in addition to her day job, she’s written a book and started her own publishing company, Para Ella Publishing. She is currently learning Spanish and brushing up on screenplay writing for her next project. And though she has always enjoyed the freedom and independence of going it alone, others weren’t exactly thrilled with her single way of life.

15 other girlfriends in my age range who were struggling with the same issues.” Rethinking Roles Shea decided to write a book about the merits of living single to help empower others to live and love life without a significant other. Her book,“The ‘Rethink’ Remedy for Single Women Over 30” was released last September.

Today’s Charlotte Woman | February 2013

“Being a single woman, and an only child,I felt pressure from my family. ‘Why aren’t you settled down? Why aren’t you married?’ It seemed to be a major concern to them, more so than anything else in my life!” Shea says. “The fact that I had graduated college, traveled extensively, developed a solid career, was a published author … those were just side notes to this major concern. Along with that, I knew at least

15

“Be confident in yourself and strive for something better. Don’t judge yourself by your marital status. Be independent, and when the time is right, it will happen.” — Lori Shea Today’s Charlotte Woman | February 2013 16

“There are many more single women in my age group now than in the past, but we are still expected to follow the old-fashioned tradition of going to school, getting married, and then having kids,” Shea explains. “I wrote the book to help these women — particularly those in their 30s — who are feeling the pressure to meet someone and settle down.” The first part of the book is autobiographical, detailing Shea’s past relationships and exploring the emotional struggles involved. The second part of the book is advice-oriented, and offers encourage-

ment to women to be independent, interesting, and involved in life on their own terms, instead of waiting for or relying on a relationship that may or may not materialize. Women are also urged to rethink their perception of marriage. Shea says, “A part of me thought I should just get married and settle down, but a big part of me said, ‘No!’ I had to get to the point where I just let go. As soon as I let go of the single stigma,I started going out and having fun — without a motive.” Ironically, once she set out to write the

book, Shea met her current beau during an early morning coffee run. But she says the relationship would never have gotten off the ground if marriage had been her foremost concern. “One morning, on the way to work, I stopped in at Starbucks and met the guy I’m now dating standing behind me in line. It was an immediate attraction, but it never would have happened if I hadn’t just let go. When I finally met the person I was supposed to be with,I realized why I hadn’t settled before,” she says. Shea adds, “That’s the overall theme of

my book: Be confident in yourself and strive for something better. Don’t judge yourself by your marital status. Marriage shouldn’t be the driving goal. Be independent, and when the time is right, it will happen.” ToLearnMore “The‘Rethink’Remedy for Single Women Over 30” is available through paraellapub.com. [TCW]

Heartfelt

Heart Surgery Survivor Amy Kochan By Lee Rhodes | Photos By Michael C. Hernandez

On the surface, Amy Kochan is your typical 30-something. She and husband Patrick are coming up on their five-year anniversary. She enjoys a successful career at a consulting firm and, like so many working mothers, juggles multiple balls. She’s also a fitness fanatic who finds time to volunteer for causes that matter to her. Despite all that, Kochan is atypical.

Mending A Broken Heart The way Kochan looks at it,that baby, now an active 2-year-old,saved her life. After all,she was pregnant with Jackson when her elusive medical problems first began revealing themselves, and it was her nagging intuition that kept her doggedly pursuing a diagnosis, even while some doctors insisted she was perfectly healthy. Perfectly healthy she was not. Unbeknown to all,the former marathon runner was suffering from an atrial septal defect — a congenital heart

Today’s Charlotte Woman | February 2013

Case in point: A few short years ago, just six months after giving birth to her first child, Kochan was facing heart surgery, a grim reality whose only silver lining was the fact that she didn’t require a heart transplant (and yes, doctors had considered the possibility). While other families were happily anticipating their first Christmas with baby, Kochan and her husband were spending time with a lawyer, finalizing wills. She was 36 years old. “We call it our roller coaster,” Kochan says.

19

“How do we tell both of our boys this story one day? Our oldest saved mommy’s life, and our youngest is a miracle that gave new life.” — Amy Kochan

defect that allows blood flow between the two chambers of the heart — plus an enlarged right ventricle. Essentially, Kochan had a large hole in her heart. It was that hole, she now knows, that caused the significant swelling and shortness of breath that was plaguing her. Her obstetrician at the time chalked it up to being pregnant, but during labor, she struggled to breathe and her blood pressure skyrocketed. Jackson was delivered via emergency C-section and was healthy, but her blood pressure remained elevated for weeks. She didn’t lose one pound after the birth, which the doctor attributed to fluid retention.

After six weeks with no relief, Kochan visited her primary care doctor, who promptly referred her to a cardiologist. Initial tests revealed that Kochan had suffered from a pulmonary embolism, a frightening but treatable diagnosis. Kochan began taking blood thinners and went in for daily blood draws. A couple months passed and she went in for a followup EKG on a Friday afternoon at 4 p.m. “Don’t ever schedule a big medical test on a Friday at 4 o’clock!” she advises. Kochan left the office, assuming nothing was out of the ordinary. That Sunday afternoon, while grocery shopping, she got a call from her pulmonary specialist. What he told her over the phone left her

sobbing on the floor of Harris Teeter, surrounded by strangers who sat down and cried with her. “He said, ‘I don’t have good news,’ ”she recalls. “The hardest thing I ever did was walk back in the house after the grocery store to tell my husband.” The next morning was surreal. Doctors worked to determine what to do about the 14-to-22 millimeter-size hole in her heart. Dr. Downey, of Sanger Heart and Vascular, offered an innovative solution in the form of an Amplatzer Occluder, a device implanted in the heart to fill the hole. The hope was that Kochan’s body would grow new tissue around it. Six months later, she had another EKG

and learned that the hole had closed and her heart had decreased in size. Though she was discouraged from having more children, she was told to otherwise go live her life. “We threw a celebration party for my son’s birthday and my good report. Then we said, ‘Here’s our family, here’s our life, let’s move forward,’ ” she says. But life had other plans.

The Miracle Baby The Kochans assumed that dramatic health-related moments were a thing of the past. Though Amy had struggled to lose her pregnancy weight, she attributed it to the fact that her heart wasn’t strong enough to pump all of the excess fluid out of her body. When a girlfriend presented a different option, inquiring whether Kochan might be pregnant again, she laughed the question off — but it got her thinking. “After five pregnancy tests,we realized that we were pretty much pregnant,” she says, with a laugh. Make that pregnant and extremely scared. Her cardiologist hadn’t forbidden her to have more children … but she had been told to give her heart time to repair itself. There were significant risks. Consultation with multiple doctors only increased Kochan’s anxiety, especially after two physicians strongly recommended termination. But Dr.Downey disagreed, and Kochan says her mother’s intuition told her all would be fine. Nine months later, she gave birth to another healthy boy. Caleb is now 7 months old, and Amy is happy to report that neither he nor Jackson suffer from any congenital heart issues. For her part, Kochan must visit her cardiologist annually, but otherwise is free to live her life as she chooses. She can even run another marathon if she wants! The ordeal became a blessing in many ways, and Kochan found herself with an even greater appreciation for life. Determined to take advantage of her “second chance,” she began volunteering with both Levine Cardiac Kids and the American Heart Association, participating in the Heart Walk, serving with the Circle of Red Society, and working tirelessly within her own firm to educate colleagues about heart health. Kochan shares her story with as many people as possible, and encourages other heart patients to do the same. “You can help others become heart healthy and heart-wise,” she says. As for telling her own children about the amazing events, she ponders the perfect way to share it all, when they are older. “How do we tell both of our boys this story one day?” she asks. “Our oldest saved mommy’s life, and our youngest is a miracle that gave new life.”

8 Easy Ways To Show Yourself The Love

F

ebruary is traditionally associated with matters of the heart … but you can’t truly love others until you love yourself. Many women are better at taking care of others than themselves (we know this from personal experience), so we decided to compile a handful of easy ways to revamp your lifestyle and show yourself the love this year.

2. Just face it. Who wouldn’t enjoy a facial a week … or a month? (Or a year?) Sadly, sometimes the budget won’t allow for such luxuries. In between trips to the aesthetician this year, get your face squeaky clean each night by using Clarisonic’s Aria skin cleansing system. The Aria has taken the traditional Clarisonic to a higher level; it comes complete with three speeds, and an adjustable timer to help you know how long you’ve scrubbed each cheek. After using the Aria just a handful of times, we found that in addition to cleaner pores, it also offers amazing exfoliation. And we loved that! The Clarisonic Aria is available for $199 at Sephora, Sephora.com, and department stores.

1. Nurture your creative self. Jennifer Appleby is the president and chief creative officer at Wray Ward, an award-winning marketing communications company in Charlotte. Appleby is proof that creativity can reap dividends. Likewise, she offers a collection of tangible ways women can tap into their most creative self. “Surround yourself with bold color, natural light, great music, and inspirational photos or art,” Appleby suggests. “Stroll through the Mint, Bechtler, or Gantt Museum on a rainy day. Wear an unexpected piece of costume jewelry. Add plenty of sunshine, fresh air, laughter, and brisk walks. Be brave, curious, and willing to make colossal mistakes.” She adds, “If all else fails, go for a really good bottle of red wine and dark chocolate sea-salt caramels. Works for me!”

You’ve probably heard by now that Teflon and similar non-stick coated pans can be dangerous, especially if the surface is scratched or otherwise damaged. According to WiseGeek.com, Teflon pans have been found to release 15 different toxic gases, and they also contain a chemical known as perflurooctanoic acid,or C-8,which may lead to cancer and birth defects. This year, invest in nontoxic, eco-friendly cookware, such as WearEver Pure Living cookware. Pure Living cookware features a ceramic-coated surface, is durable, PTOA-free, PTFEfree, and cadmiumfree … not to mention dishwasher safe, high-temperature safe, scratch resistant, and recyclable. To learn more, visit WearEver.com.

4. Think about it. Meditate. Or at least, be mindful. “What you see in your external world is a reflection of your inner world,” says Anne Glasgow, certified reflexologist. “If you stop amid the chaos, calm yourself, and take a few deep breaths, your outer experiences will shift as well.”

5. Flax is where it’s at. Over the years, there has been an influx of “wonder foods” that experts insist should be added to your diet. For 2013, consider flax. Studies show it can fight diabetes, heart disease, cholesterol, cancer, constipation, and inflammation! It even helps with menopause because, like soy, flax is a phytoestrogen, which can help stabilize hormonal levels. Looking for an easy way to get your daily serving of flax? Consider Carrington Farms’ single-serving Flax Paks. Each packet contains highquality, organic-milled flax seeds that can be sprinkled on food. Find Flax Paks in major grocery stores, Whole Foods markets, and health-food stores around the country.

6. Take a trip on the vegan side. Being vegan isn’t just about what you put in your mouth. Did you know you can wear vegan as well? And no product is more sustainable, durable, and trendy right now than cork. Show yourself — and the world — some love this year by considering an eco-friendly cork handbag by Cork Design. Owned by fashion creators Ingrid Heinkel and Jetta Hanover, Cork Design offers

stylish bags that are feather-light, fire-resistant and waterproof, and feel like nubuck suede. And never fear, cork is a renewable product. In fact, demand for cork products creates an incentive to leave cork oak forests intact,or better yet, expand them. Cork harvesting is a great example of a sustainable agro-forestry system where people use natural resources, without destroying nature. All Cork Design bags are handmade in Portugal and are available in natural, rustic, Hawaii, and tiger finishes. For information, visit shopcorkdesign.com.

Beauty may only be skin deep, but most of us have a natural desire to like what we see in the mirror each day. That said, aging is a fact. If you are hoping to love your face, but aren’t interested in super-invasive procedures, consider the advice of Dr. Bill Kortesis, with The Hunstad Kortesis Center and Medspa, in Huntersville. “One of the best agents to improve your skin and decrease signs of aging is RetinA,” Dr. Kortesis says. “When used on a regular basis, RetinA reduces wrinkles and brown spots, as well as increases collagen production for smoother, healthier skin.” See your doctor or dermatologist for information.

Becky Knight, owner of Living Sexuality in Plaza Midwood, says the best way to love yourself is by loving your body, and enjoying its amazing capacity for pleasure. “One of the best things a woman can do to improve her overall physical and emotional health is to have more sex,” Knight says. “It’s free, fun, and you don’t have to leave the house! Sex increases brainpower, strengthens bones and muscles, improves sleep, relieves pain, and reduces stress. You don’t necessarily need a partner either!” She adds,“Women are so busy thinking, planning, and organizing that they have difficulty getting out of their heads and into their bodies. One way I encourage women to do this is by keeping a sensuality journal, even just for a week, by making note of the sights, sounds, smells, tastes, and textures that arouse their interest. A heightened awareness of their senses often leads to an increased desire for sex.” [TCW]

faulty diagnosis, over-medication, and a child whose problems aren’t properly addressed. He points to the dramatic rise in ADHD (Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder) diagnoses and accompanying prescriptions as prime examples. “In today’s society, especially as it pertains to children, there is an over-diagnosis of ADHD. Any time a child has a behavior problem or difficulties at home or at school, he gets diagnosed with ADHD and started on medication. But ADHD may not be the real problem,”Dr.Smith says. “Many times children are labeled with ADHD when they have anxiety or depression. If the diagnosis is incorrect, then the treatment is incorrect. That is why a consultation with a mental health professional is so important.” Dr.Smith says that if your child is having persistent behavioral difficulties at school and also at home, a mental health professional should be involved. If your child is currently being treated for a mental health issue but not responding to treatment, a consultation with a mental health professional is also in order. Most importantly,he says, don’t just wait and hope that things will get better. “We need to relieve the stigma of mental illness and get children the help that they need,” he says. “Mental illness is like a toothache. If you don’t do something about it, it will only get worse.” [TCW] ToLearnMore Charlotte Family Psychiatry And Counseling Services Dr. Stanton Smith 5113 Piper Station Drive, Suite 207 Charlotte, NC 28277 Cltfamilypsych.com 704/541-5200

f you’re like most moms, you work hard to ensure that your children eat a wide variety of healthy foods, enjoy at least an hour of physical activity most every day, and get at least eight-plus hours of sleep each night. You take them to the pediatrician for annual checkups, keep them up-to-date on all recommended vaccinations, and make sure they get prompt medical attention for ear infections, strep throat, and other childhood illnesses. But have you ever stopped to consider your child’s mental health? Dr. Stanton Smith, of Charlotte Family Psychiatry and Counseling Services, says that far too often the mental aspects of good health, especially in children, are overlooked. “Many people, both children and adults, get mental health care from their family provider or their pediatrician. While some of these doctors are good, a consultation with a mental health professional is a good idea. A mental health provider is an expert in determining psychiatric and mental health needs and can better address those needs,” Dr. Smith says. Unfortunately,he notes that there seems to be a stigma associated with mental illness, particularly as it pertains to children. “A lot of patients don’t think they have a mental illness if they just go to their pediatrician or family doctor,” he says. However, not consulting the proper mental health professional can lead to a

ome may be where the heart is, but the kitchen is the lifeline of the home. It’s not just about sustenance. Kitchens tend to be the gathering place of most homes. And why not? What other room has so much to offer, in such a small space? There’s food, fellowship, comfort … and did we mention food? “In my opinion, the kitchen is the most important part of the house,” says Adolfo Levi, owner of Copperstone Builders. “This is where the family integrates and the house becomes a home.” Extraordinary kitchens are a mixture of good planning, excellent aesthetics, and functionality. But above all, a welldesigned kitchen should offer all who enter a sense of “I belong here.” “To achieve an extraordinary result, you have to design an integral ambiance where you can interact with family and friends,” Levi says. >

The Most Important Room Kitchens are so important that they can literally make or break a house. A prospective homeowner might be able to overlook a bedroom that borders on small, or the lack of closet space downstairs. But if your kitchen lacks the beauty and functionality that has become the norm today, remodeling might be a wise decision. “Updated kitchens are definitely a huge factor in buyers

Today’s Charlotte Woman | February 2013 46

choosing one home over another,” says Virginia Thornburg, a broker with Keller Williams Realty. “More and more buyers are not only wanting beautiful, updated kitchens, but they also want them to be very open to — or an extension of — the family room.” If you are designing or remodeling a kitchen, Levi says two things are of utmost importance. “A kitchen, whether outdoors or indoors, needs to meet at least two goals,” Levi says. “They are functionality and safety. Keeping everything within arm’s reach allows the chef the needed space, time, and creativity to prepare delicious daily meals for the family.” If functionality is of utmost importance, Levi suggests keeping all of your appliances in the same line. He recommends GE Profile Advantium ovens, in the Monogram professional series. Regardless of style, Levi notes that today’s kitchens are light years ahead of those of the past. “One of the big trends is reinventing the kitchen to be able to live a healthier lifestyle,” he says. “Fresh ingredients, functionality, and prepping stations are key. Think outside the box, by incorporating a spice/herb garden into your prepping area with vegetable sinks and under-counter vegetable refrigerator drawers.” More Than Just Food It’s not all work and no play when it comes to kitchens — aesthetics are important. Fortunately, the sky is the limit when it comes to kitchen designs. Kristie Knorr, with Impact Design Resources, focuses on custom cabinetry, closets, and makeovers, working closely with designers, architects, and builders around the Carolinas. “There is incredible diversity in the needs and styles of the people we work with,” she says. “Melding many variables into a smart cohesive design for each client and their particular space is what makes a great kitchen.” She notes that many kitchen trends are worth implementing, including gorgeous, streamlined cabinets in a variety of styles, stains, and finishes. With today’s need for organization, many offer additional storage built into the cabinetry. “When all of the other materials are in place — granite, marble, tile appliances — the color chosen for the cabinetry can create an inviting, memorable kitchen,” Knorr says. Rich crown moldings give a sense of importance. Islands topped in granite are perfect for serving food or completing the occasional school project. Mixing and matching a wide variety of textures, colors, and wood stains is also on trend, creating interest and appeal. Other notable upgrades include paneled refrigerators and dishwashers, wet and dry bars, and even coffee stations. Want to design a kitchen that stays in style for years to come? Knorr recommends avoiding selections that will soon be considered out-of-date. “Save those current splashes for areas that are easier to change in the home, like vases, fabrics, art, hardware, even paint — but not cabinet finishes and surface selection,” she says. With a little foresight and a lot of planning, your kitchen can be the stuff of dreams. And keep in mind that the inspiration

AtHome for your dream kitchen can come from anywhere. Knorr recently worked on a custom kitchen that was inspired by a picture the client had stumbled across in a magazine. “We used that as inspiration as we planned the layout of her space with the help of her designer,” she says. Knorr notes that the tiniest of details are important when it comes to crafting the perfect kitchen. From the style of doors chosen, to the height of islands, every decision plays a role in developing the perfect kitchen — and since it is the most important room in the house, it might as well be perfect! “The kitchen is the heart of the home. A luxurious spa bath retreat is a dream … but we don’t invite our friends and relatives over saying, ‘Let’s hang out in my bath!’” she says, with a laugh. Knorr adds,“The kitchen is the area we gravitate to naturally, and that seems to be consistent no matter what the family dynamics are. We are heading to the kitchen to socialize and connect. So yes, kitchens are very important to the home.” [TCW]

A Taste Of American History Share A Glass Of Wine With Our Founding Fathers By Trevor Burton

w

Today’s Charlotte Woman | February 2013 50

hat could be neater than sipping on the same wine that Thomas Jefferson drank to toast the signing of the Declaration of Independence? So, the reality is that it’s probably more accurate to say“similar wine”instead of the “same wine.” Still, it’s not beyond the realms of possibility to imagine sipping on a 1776 vintage wine. The wine in question is Madeira, and it can age almost indefinitely. Finding a bottle of the 1776 vino would be difficult, not to mention ridiculously expensive. But there are lots of ancient wines around. Consider this: When Winston Churchill visited Madeira a few years back, he was served a bottle of the 1792 vintage. To put that into historical perspective, Churchill explained that when the wine was bottled, Marie Antoinette was still alive. History In A Bottle American history is steeped in Madeira. Francis Scott Key is said to have penned “The Star Spangled Banner” while sipping from a glass of Madeira. George Washington’s inauguration was toasted with Madeira. And of course, there’s the Declaration of Independence signing. Madeira’s Colonial popularity was due to a loophole in Britain’s tax madness. British authorities banned the importation to the Colonies of products made or grown in Europe unless they were shipped on British vessels from British ports. However, products from Madeira were specif-

ically exempted. Madeira is an island located 360 miles west of Morocco’s African coast. So,while Jefferson’s much beloved French wines came with a heavy premium, Madeira was much more affordable. The Heat Is On Madeira has a history of its own. Back in the 1600s,wine was transported in ships that took a long time to reach their destination. By the time the wine arrived, it was inevitably spoiled. To address this issue, winemakers fortified their wines with some spirits to enable them to make the journey. Hence the origin of Sherry and Port,as well as Madeira. But Madeira took an extra turn. On the long journeys from Europe to the New World, casks of Madeira were stored in the holds of ships. That exposed them to long periods of extreme heat; the wine was literally cooked. As a result, it underwent a fundamental transformation. Winemakers were unaware of what was happening until an unsold batch came back to them. One taste, and the light bulb went on! Thus was born the Madeira that Jefferson and his cronies loved, and that we have available today. Instead of storing their wines for a toasty round trip to the New World (a fairly expensive proposition), winemakers came up with their own wine-heating methods. They either left wine to age in attics exposed to the sun, or they kept their casks in artificially heated rooms. The process is called estufagem. It has engendered the term maderization, which is used to describe the general process of heating and oxidizing a wine. Deep, Complex, Balanced Madeiras are amazing wines. They’re fortified and toasted, and then aged for long periods of time in oak barrels. In fact, many winemakers keep their Madeiras permanently in a barrel, drawing off wine only when needed. All of this gives them deep and complex flavors,

Oh, what Trevor Burton would give to go back in time and share a glass of Madeira with Thomas Jefferson!

but what makes them great is the acidity that they get from the grapes, which acts as a balance. The wines are a clear, dark golden brown. They have intense aromas with lots of wood, dried fruits, toffee, and spices. They are sweet, fresh, and smooth — full-bodied with a lingering, smoky characteristic, and extremely well balanced. They’re best served lightly chilled. Madeiras are so rich that you might be tempted to pour them over some ice cream. Resist the temptation. They demand your undivided attention. Madeiras come in a range of sweetness. You can generally tell what style of wine you are getting by the grape listed on its label. Sercial is a white grape used to produce a dry style of Madeira. Verdelho is a white grape used to make a semidry variation. Bual is a white grape that makes a semisweet wine. Lastly, Malmsey is a white grape that typically produces sweet wines. There is also the generic Madeira. These are wines made not from just one of the four key noble grape varietals, but rather a blend that may include some“lesser”grapes. These wines will also typically come with a label“hint”as to whether you can expect it to be sweet (doce), dry (seco), or somewhere in between (meio doce). Madeira’s reputation has taken somewhat of a hit over the years. It has become positioned as an inexpensive wine that’s good only for cooking — you can even find packages of powdered Madeira Wine Gravy Mix. Yuck! This might be due to some winemakers flooding the market with low quality wines,or it may be due to California winemakers preempting the name to label some pretty nasty wines. By all means, give this bad stuff a wide berth. Buy the good stuff. Check to make sure that the wine comes from the Portuguese island of Madeira. If the “Madeira” is from anywhere else, you are going to be sorely disappointed. The bad rap Madeira has taken offers an upside: Good Madeira wines are priced to sell. You can find a good Madeira for around $20. Spend a little more, and you are in for a real treat! [TCW]

Baby Love Hormone May Protect Mothers From Pain ime may heal all wounds, but studies have found that a special“love hormone”present in the bodies of women after they give birth may protect women from chronic pain afterward. Researchers became aware of a surprising fact: Chronic pain from childbirth is rare. This realization prompted a study of the benefits of the hormone oxytocin, which is found in elevated concentrations in the brains and spinal cords of women who give birth. Two separate studies found that the hormone, along with the biologic changes a new mother’s body goes through, may offer protection from long-term pain. In the first study, published in the journal “Anesthesiology,” researchers interviewed more than 1,200 women within 36 hours of giving birth, and found that only 1.8 percent of the women who had

T

pain when they delivered still had pain six months later. Only 0.3 percent had pain a year later. The research suggests that oxytocin protects mothers against the development of chronic pain. “There may be a protecting mechanism that is active around the time of childbirth to prevent chronic pain from physical injury,” says Dr. James Eisenach, professor of obstetric and gynecologic anesthesia at Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center in Winston-Salem, N.C. “Oxytocin in the brain is considered important to mother-baby bonding, trust, love, and social engagement,” he adds. “These results suggest the surge in oxytocin around childbirth may also speed recovery from the pain caused by childbirth.”

Dr. Eisenach hopes that analyzing the natural protection of the hormone may help develop treatments to prevent chronic pain from other types of trauma or surgery.

Want To Lose Weight? Aerobic Exercise Is Best on’t look now, but it's February. Are you still holding true to those New Year’s resolutions? If burning fat and losing weight were personal promises you made on January 1, then you might want to incorporate aerobic exercise into your routine. A new study shows that aerobic exercise beats resistance training when it comes to burning fat and losing weight. According to study author Leslie Willis, clinical research coordinator at Duke University Medical Center and an exercise physiologist, previous studies have shown that resistance training has many benefits, improving blood sugar control. However, the effects of it on fat reduction have not been conclusive. Study results suggest that for people who are short on time, aerobic exercise is the best way to lose weight and fat.

D

For the eight-month study, 234 middle-aged men and women, all overweight or obese, were assigned to one of three groups. The resistance-training group worked out three times a week for three hours total, focusing on eight different weight machines. The aerobic group logged approximately 12 miles a week on elliptical machines or treadmills, exercising about 133 minutes a week, or about 2 1/4 hours. Another group combined efforts, and worked out three days a week, using both resistance training and aerobics. Of the 119 who finished the study, the results were clear: Those who did aerobic exercise or the combination reduced total body mass and fat mass more than those in the resistance group.

Willis notes that the combination group “did double the time commitment without significantly improving the result over the aerobic group alone for fat mass.” She adds, “If fat mass is something a person wants to target, I would say your most time-efficient method would be to focus on the cardiovascular exercise.” [TCW]

Valentine’s Day S

Today’s Charlotte Woman | February 2013 58

o, guys, here’s the good news. If you are reading this on or before February 13, then you haven’t done anything wrong just yet. To be more specific, you haven’t missed Valentine’s Day. Now, for the bad news. Valentine’s Day is fast approaching and it’s not one of those holidays that your wife or girlfriend is going to forget. Don’t even pray she might. You have work to do. The time to act is now. Roll up your sleeves, chest bump your confidence, and make it happen. You can do this. Let’s start with the basics. Valentine’s Day is that wretched day created by women, Hallmark, and Godiva Chocolatier to make men feel even guiltier than we already do about coming home late from work, not picking up after ourselves, and forgetting to take out the trash. It’s as simple as that. I’ll go on record by saying that if we keep the above definition in mind from the start — and come to terms with the idea that no combination of flowers, chocolates, candies, wine, cheese, and pampering packed into one single day can possibly repay the special women in our lives for all that they do for us every single day of the year — then the likelihood of pulling off a day for the record books is high. That said, your day still needs to include some combination of flowers, chocolates, candies, wine, cheese, and pampering. Oh, one more basic. A Hallmark card. Why a Hallmark? I’m not exactly sure, but whenever I’m card shopping, the Hallmark cards always seem to be in shortest supply. That must make them the best, right? Now,for the creative part. You need to come up with an awesomely awesome gift. If you turn on the television or radio or open a web browser this month, you’re more than likely being bombarded with ads for diamonds, teddy bears from a certain New England state, or customized snuggly things. Here’s my advice. Diamonds work, but nothing else mentioned above should even be considered or purchased. And diamonds are expensive. Skip the Internet for present shopping. If you Google“Valentine’s Day gifts for her” you’re going to come up with hundreds of pages of the same things I mentioned above, and all you’ll get is lost and confused. And no matter how hard you try not to,

three clicks in to your search and you’ll be on a sports page reading why every other city has a team way better than ours and you’ll just wind up feeling sad and angry. The only thing the Internet should be used for in regards to Valentine’s Day is finding a romantic quote to support your game plan. I’ll save you the effort. Go with this: Tell her Pablo Picasso believed that, “Love is the greatest refreshment in life,”and that’s why you didn’t buy her wine. Mention that Lord Alfred Tennyson said, “Love is the only gold,” so that’s why you left the jewelry in the store cases. Let me know if it works for you. If it doesn’t, well, you didn’t read it here. Here’s my best suggestion for finding a gift in Charlotte. Go to Paper Skyscraper on East Boulevard and browse the shelves. Trust me, those guys have amazing talent when it comes to finding awesomely awesome gifts. So, why not take advantage of their creativity and reap the benefits? Plus,if you hate shopping, you can be in and out in 10 minutes, no problem. And hey, there is a tasty Thai food place right next door. Oh, and while you are in there (the store, not the Thai place), get something for her pet dog or cat, too. There’s your closer. Now,for those of you reading this on or after February 14,you can still somewhat save yourself. Sure, the Hallmark cards and cool gifts will be gone, and any flowers left in the grocery store will likely be wilted. That’s just par for the course. But you can play a mulligan. Whenever you realize it is (or was) Valentine’s Day, just pull your sweetheart close, look her in the eye, say you are sorry, then tell her that you love her and she kicks ass. Do it just like that. A kiss might help, too. Then start planning for next year. If there is a next year for you!

Freelance writer Mike Savicki lives in Cornelius with his wife, newborn daughter, and the family’s pet dog and cat. He is solely responsible for making Valentine’s Day special for all four females.

Many Women Worry About Covering Cellulite.

You don’t have to be one of them.

Dare To Bare.

Cellulite is not a “fat” problem; it is a problem within the skin structure. No amount of diet or exercise will completely get rid of the “orange peel” look. Cellulaze is the first and only treatment that targets the actual structural problems underneath the skin to give you proven, longer lasting results from just one simple cellulite treatment with minimal downtime.
