A Ballplayer Looks Back ack before I was a grownup, before I was a horse fanatic and known for my love of words, I was a ballplayer. Softball, that is. I don’t remember being taught how to play. My earliest memories of the sport include playing catch with my buddy Kevin, who was one year younger than me but infinitely cooler. I remember thinking if I could throw as hard as Kevin, he might ask me to “go with him,” i.e., be his girlfriend. He never did, but I turned out to be quite the ballplayer, instead. My parents started playing church ball when I was approximately 7. I spent summers at makeshift ball fields, where I chased after Kevin and ate all sorts of candy and accidentally whacked my cousin Karen in the head with a bat. My father helped lead the decision to create a ball field at the church of my youth (Steele Creek Presbyterian), and as soon as I was allowed to play I was on the women’s team there, in addition to playing for Steele Creek Athletic Association, and later, school ball and in Park Road Park’s rec leagues. It was not uncommon for me to be on two or three teams simultaneously, and I usually had my best friend, Susan, in tow. As a child, my father was always my assistant coach, and my head coach was Susan’s father, a man I still to this day call Mr. Coskrey, out of respect and sheer habit. I blew out my knee at 15, and my dreams of nabbing a college softball scholarship dissolved into dust. (My
puny batting average in high school might not have helped.) Regardless, I kept on playing, moving back and forth from shortstop to third base, always wearing my trusty DonJoy knee brace. (Just like Dan Marino’s, according to my orthopedist.) As an adult, I often played co-ed for my father at the church, where the infield was so bumpy it made shagging balls as dangerous as fielding erratic missiles, and you could watch the airplanes fly startlingly close overhead on their descent to Charlotte Douglas International Airport a few miles away. In fact, from age 7 to 38, I was usually at the ball field, and my father was typically close by. For years, he never missed a game. In many ways, the bond he and I share today was cultivated on the dusty fields of the ballparks of my youth. My last experiences with softball came from an insanely competitive women’s-only league in Tega Cay, where many women could hit it out of the 350-feet parks with ease. Seriously. In this league, my knee put its foot down, so to speak. The old injury of my youth voted vehemently against playing double-headers most Sundays, and I had to come to terms with the simple fact that it wasn’t worth playing on Sunday, and hobbling painfully Monday through Saturday. I hung up my glove, but not my love of the sport. I am still a ballplayer at heart … and a Daddy’s Girl, all the way.

From Athlete To Athena Victoria Vesce Finds Beauty In Her Strength

ictoria Vesce may be the newly crowned Miss North Carolina International 2014, but in a former (childhood) life, she was a tomboy and an athlete who never put a lot of stock in makeup and dresses. Vesce grew up immersed in athletics. In high school, she was a fouryear varsity basketball player, and a soccer and volleyball player. The recent graduate from North Carolina State University didn’t enter the world of pageants until she was a senior in high school, and was driven by a desire to try something new. She soon found pageants were uniquely competitive, and strikingly similar to sports in that regard. “I actually think that having a sports background helped me in pageants,” Vesce says. “Pageants are a competition, just like sports. I had never worn makeup or had my nails and hair done like you need to for the stage, so all of that was a complete new world. I fell in love with the challenge and the process.” That love has translated into much success. Vesce won the title of Miss North Carolina United States, and placed second runner-up at the Miss United States pageant. This summer,Vesce is competing in the 2014 Miss International Pageant in Jacksonville, Fla. Pageants have taught Vesce many life skills, including enhancing her interview skills and on-stage presence. They have also afforded her the opportunity to model for such designers as Sheri Hill, Jovani and Juan Carlos Pinera. Most importantly, the pageant system gives her a larger platform for her anti-bullying campaign. Vesce promotes her platform of anti-bullying via her S.U.P.E.R. Hero Kids program, which she presents to elementary schools, Boys and Girls Clubs, churches and other venues. She is involved in community service, and volunteers on a regular basis, whether in street ministry or child advocacy. She is also writing a children’s book that correlates with her S.U.P.E.R. Hero Kids program. In addition to pageants,Vesce has enjoyed success with acting. This past fall, she starred in the full-length feature film “Athena Goddess of War,” which was
produced by Maiden Comics Studios and filmed in the Charlotte area. The film is set to release within the next three months. She admits that playing the female superhero Athena was fun and empowering. “All of their films portray strong female characters,” she says. Here,Vesce shares her experiences with both pageants and acting. Q: What was it like switching over from athletics to pageants? A: I never really knew that much about pageants. Honestly, the pageant world was very foreign. I had always been a bit of a “tomboy.” I have two older brothers and grew up on a farm, so hunting and fishing were hobbies. Getting into sports was a natural for me. Once I started playing school sports, I was consumed with the life of an athlete. My senior year, I had offers to continue my basketball career in college, but injured my shoulder and ended my basketball career. On a whim, I was searching through the Internet and read about the different pageant systems and the benefits, so I decided to give one a try! I wanted to “step out of the box” and entering a pageant seemed like a good leap.
Q: Tell me about your upcoming part in the film “Athena Goddess of War.” (I’m sure every woman would like to play the goddess of wisdom!) A: Being chosen for the part of Athena in the movie was a dream come true. As you know, there are not that many female superheroes in Hollywood blockbuster films, so the opportunity to portray a strong female character as the lead hero in the film was life changing. The movie is set in modern-day times, but references Greek mythology quite a bit. In the movie, the only thing standing between the impending invasion and certain annihilation of mankind is Athena, the Goddess of War, and seven brave humans courageous enough to join the fight to save mankind. The fight scenes were intense. I had to learn how to throw “fake” punches and “fall” convincingly. I even pick up and throw a few cars along the way! I might seem a bit angry in most of the film, but that is really my intense focus. You know, the world had to be saved and such! [Laughs]

Q: What do you love about sports? A: Competitive sports run through my blood. In life, I always strive to be the best I can be at whatever I do. I love the
feeling of accomplishment when I reach a goal or win a game, and the training process and physical fitness aspect of sports is beneficial throughout life. Sports inspire you to be dedicated while encouraging fair play, show respect for opponents, and exercise polite behavior. Q: Why did you pick anti-bullying as your platform? A: My platform is one that I personally experienced and lived through. During my middle-school years, I was bullied relentlessly, but the bullying escalated when the attacks went cyber. It was a very tumultuous time in my life. As a young teen, you think this is the end of the world. Once again, sports served as an outlet that allowed me to channel my energy toward a positive goal. My experience allows me to empathize with those going through bullying and to encourage them.

Pipkin has made quite a name for herself as a serial entrepreneur, and she hails from the investment banking world. When she discovered the owner of Infinity Sun was moving to Miami, she recognized a business opportunity. She offered to buy the business. At first there was no interest, but a few months later the owner called Pipkin. “We had three weeks to figure out a business plan, and we did it,” she says. Pipkin’s first location opened in Charlotte’s Midtown area in 2010. Three years later, she opened a location in the SouthPark area, and this past spring she set up shop in Cornelius’ Jetton Village. Gorgeous Glo is also the official spray tanner for Miss North Carolina USA and Miss South Carolina USA pageants. Pipkin understands that getting an allover spray tan puts clients in a vulnerable situation initially, but says that she and her trained staff make it as comfortable as possible. “You have to educate the public as to why this is different than a tanning bed,” Pipkin explains. “The process takes 15 minutes, and when you walk out, you look fabulous. It sprays on beautifully, and it doesn’t have an odor.” Women between the ages of 25 and 35 are her biggest demographic. Pipkin says spray tanning is popular with that group because they were the little girls whose mothers slathered them with sunscreen, denying them tans during the summer. She adds that, if moisturized properly, this type of spray tan can last six to 10 days with no harmful side effects. Hearts Of Palm Salad With Maine Lobster & Creamy Walnut Dressing
For the salad: 2 ounces blended olive oil 2 1 pound whole Maine Lobsters 1 cup baby green beans, blanched & cut into half on bias 1 cup roasted shiitake mushrooms, cleaned & roasted crispy 2 cups hearts of palm, sliced thin ½ cup cherry tomatoes, cut in half ¼ cup walnut oil vinaigrette www.TodaysCharlotteWomanMag.com | June 2014 14
Poach the lobster in boiling salted water for 8 minutes. Remove and plunge into ice water to stop the cooking process. Remove and dry off the lobster. Remove the lobster from the shell. Clean the mushrooms with a paper towel and slice into semi-thin strips. In a very hot pan and a little blended olive oil, add shiitake mushrooms in small amounts. Roast until crispy.
Remove and place on paper towels. Repeat until all mushrooms are cooked and crispy. Heat saucepan over medium-low heat. Season the lobster tail meat and claws with salt and pepper. Add a little oil to the pan, and then carefully place the lobster in the pan. Sear for 1 to 2 minutes on each side. Add beurre monté and poach for 2 minutes. Remove and keep warm. Toss fresh hearts of palm, baby green beans, roasted mushrooms and tomatoes in a mixing bowl, and dress with walnut dressing and sea salt/pepper. Place a small mound of salad in the center of the plate. Slice the lobster tail in half lengthwise and place on top of the salad. Drizzle a little extra virgin oil on salad along with fresh cut chives.
For the dressing: 3 eggs 2 tablespoons Dijon mustard 2 tablespoons lemon juice 1 shallot, diced fine 1 cup sherry vinegar 1 cup walnut oil 2 cups canola oil Salt & pepper to taste In a mixing bowl, add the egg yolks and whisk until smooth. Add the mustard, lemon juice, shallots and vinegar, and whisk until blended. Slowly add the walnut oil in a steady stream, and mix oil until emulsified.

Combine the tequila, triple sec, Monin syrup, sugar water and lime juice, and stir. Add blackberry puree and stir. Place in a blender with ice, and blend until ice is thoroughly incorporated with the blackberry mixture to a slushy texture. Garnish with two fresh blackberries on a toothpick. Yield: 1.5 Gallon.

Founded in 1888, the National Geographic Society is one of the world’s largest nonprofit scientific and educational organizations. The exhibit was brought to Charlotte through support from Dickens Mitchener Residential Real Estate, the Mint Museum Auxiliary, UTC Aerospace Systems, and Moore & Van Allen.
atin American Contemporary Art Projects is presenting a breathtaking ceramics exhibition featuring Puerto Rican artist Jeannine Marchand. “Con Relacin al Espacio” is a body of work based on Marchand’s studio as her environment — or a room of one’s own. The show, which runs through June 20, focuses on on her pieces of framed ceramic folds, juxtaposed with sculpture, which reinterpret windows and doors as points of departure, exploring notions of body and space. “The exhibition is breathtakingly sensual, and displays marvelous technique and precision, sure to captivate all who experience it,” says Neely Verano, gallery director. Marchand is a studio artist living in Spruce Pine, N.C. She creates white organic ceramic forms and wall sculptures, and her work can be found in private and public collections, including the Museo de Arte Contemporneo de Puerto Rico. This is the first ceramics exhibition to be featured at LaCa Projects since its opening in March 2013. Located in the heart of the revitalized FreeMoreWest neighborhood, LaCa Projects is dedicated to the presentation, development and promotion of Latin American art and culture within the U.S.

She adds, “I was one of a handful of older students, and I was definitely a nerd. I stayed after class every day soaking in as much as I could and doing whatever they would let me do.” Once she finished her training, she could have made a comfortable living on the West Coast. Instead, she chose to move back east and hang out her shingle in the Queen City — this time for both hair and makeup. Her first big celebrity break came in 2008. One of her regular clients, who had recently moved to Charlotte from Washington, D.C.,
received a call while in Richardson’s chair. In a few days, Chelsea Clinton would be traveling here to join her mother, and the two would be leaving Charlotte early the next morning to fly to the Kentucky Derby. Did the client know a good stylist/makeup artist? Richardson jumped at the chance. “I met Chelsea at the Westin Hotel at 5:30 in the morning. She was really worried about her hair and whether I would know how to style it, but that was the easy part. I had done hair for so long I could have styled it with my eyes closed. But my hand was shaking when I was applying her makeup!” Richardson remembers. She was thrilled to see a picture of Clinton a few days later in her full Kentucky Derby regalia, sporting the makeup and hairstyle that Richardson had crafted in those predawn hours. Ironically, that same picture appeared again recently in People magazine, along with the news of Clinton’s pregnancy.
Beauty For Celebrities Richardson has worked on many other editorial shoots since then, with one of the most memorable including the cast of the movie

She encourages all women to experiment with makeup techniques and products, to create the best look. “Women should feel good about wearing makeup,” she says. “It can make an unbelievable difference. You can have a great look in just 10 minutes, and the right makeup and skincare can take 10 years off of your appearance.” Richardson offers these top makeup tips: • Choose the right brushes. You must have the right tools to apply makeup properly, and keeping your brushes clean is key. • Educate yourself on proper skincare and follow it consistently. • Choose the right colors for your skin, and the right on-trend color for the season. • Oftentimes with makeup, particularly for younger girls, remember that less can give better results. • Attention, older women! Don’t be afraid to punch up your look, Richardson says. Defined eyes or a pop of color on cheeks or lips can do wonders.

“The Hunger Games.” “The day after it wrapped, the cast gathered at the Phillip Morris plant in Concord for the Young Hollywood spread in Vanity Fair. I was honored to assist makeup artist Rebecca Restrepo on the shoot,” Richardson says. Though the demands are very different, she’s worked extensively in film, as well. “With editorial, you have all the time in the world. Production is warp speed. But both are exciting,” she says. During a stint with ESPN, Richardson estimates she’s done the hair and makeup of nearly every NASCAR driver on the planet. She has also worked with basketball legend Michael Jordan and his family for a Nike commemorative video. Two of her most recent production projects were movies filmed in and around the Charlotte area, and both are set to release this fall. For the Nick Jonas film, “Be Careful What You Wish For,” Richardson not only worked with Jonas, but also with Isabel Lucas and Dermot Mulroney, among others. On “Tusk,” a Kevin Smith film, she was the department head of hair and also worked with the special effects crew. Though she can’t reveal the name of the star or the storyline just yet, she says the film is a must-see. She’s grateful for the work that continues to come her way, and credits the location, networking, and, most of all, her mentors for her good fortune. “North Carolina has a great reputation for local crews, and it makes more sense for studios to hire locally than to fly people in,” she says. “I feel very fortunate to have been embraced by some of the most phenomenal and talented professionals who have mentored me and helped me along in my career.” And although Richardson is constantly juggling her production work with her regular schedule of clients, she wouldn’t have it any other way. “I’m a workaholic, but I love what I do,” she says. “I don’t have much downtime, but my work is so much fun!” [TCW]

Aware Holistic Chiropractor Shauna Christensen r. Shauna Christensen may be the most intuitive woman you have met. As a chiropractor steeped in holistic care, Dr. Christensen, like many in her field, has seen her share of twisted backs, neck aches and shoulder pain. However, she is not a typical “back cracker.” The difference is that she cares for her patients in a style of awareness that one can only call keenly perceptive. She’s no psychic, but her clients will tell you she instinctively molds both physical and emotional healing for her patients. “You can look at someone and tell how stressed they are. Dr. Christensen has been practicing holistic care in Dilworth for nearly 20 years. In 1995, she opened her practice, and moved in 1997 to her current location in the heart of Dilworth at 505 East Blvd. Since then she’s won awards for best chiropractor in Charlotte, and she works with a variety of dancers and staff affiliated with North Carolina Dance Theatre. “I love my job,” she says. That affection developed when she was a psych/neuroscience double major at Smith College. She was hit by a car at 21, went to a chiropractor and found relief. During that time, her college boyfriend was injured in a car accident that left him in a coma initially, and later in rehabilitation. “He never recovered and was left severely brain-damaged. Because of that process, I wanted to go into a field where I could inspire health,” she says. Dr. Christensen received her doctoral degree from Western States Chiropractic College in Oregon in 1992. She moved to the Queen City, engaged to a naturopathic

physician. During the relationship, she honed her intuitive and holistic skills. She sees alignments as resetting switches in the body, and uses holistic treatments to create further healing. “When you are adjusting the spine, you are resetting the circuit breaker or rebooting the computer,” Dr. Christensen says. “If you are experiencing dysfunction, the body adapts, but you may still have pain. If someone is having shoulder or neck aches, for me, it’s like unpeeling or removing the layers to find why that is. It’s almost like an archeological dig working on patients.” She offers chiropractic adjustments, nutritional advice, a line of botanical and organic supplements, and bio-meridian testing — electro dermal screening that assesses acupuncture meridians of the body. Her office also offers massage therapy, saliva hormone testing, aqua chi footbaths, weight loss plans, injury recall techniques and Cox Flexion Distraction, a method designed to treat disc bulges and herniation. She says, “My mantra has always been: ‘God, please bring me people who I can help and people who truly want to be helped,’ As a consequence, I have great patients.” Many of those patients are women. Dr. Christensen says her work is “very maternal.” “I feel a special pull toward treating women,” she says. “After they have had a child or after their last child, their adrenal gland is basically falling apart. The endocrine system is down, and they’re usually depressed.” She admits she sees herself in many of her female patients. “A lot of us have to

frequently. Overall, she projects a youthful, hip image. Staying fit is a priority. “I have to do something cardio almost every day,” she says. She frequents the Dowd YMCA, where she favors the elliptical machine and does weights occasionally. “I have a pretty physical job,” she notes with a laugh. She may be trim, but she adjusts spines with vigor, releasing endorphins in patients and allowing them to leave with an intense sense of well-being. Above all, Dr. Christensen has strong wishes for women. “If I had a magic wand, I would ‘ping’ all women to drop self-judgment,” she says. “Women are so hard on themselves. Love Of Self As much as she cares for others, these days, Dr. Christensen is focusing on her own path of continued self-awareness. As the single mother of son McRae, 9, she is busy with her full-time practice and raising her child. A self-described extrovert at work and introvert at home, she is turning her awareness inward, contemplating her “me” time, perhaps a common thread for women who reach the milestone age of 50. “My personal goal right now is what’s going to be fun for me?” she says. “I’ve always been a cheerleader for women taking care of themselves,” she adds. “Women go from baby stress to hot flashes in a lifetime, and they come to me saying their memory is not what it used to be. I often hear, ‘I’m not feeling like myself.’ Much of that is not putting the oxygen mask on themselves once in a while.” She believes that everyone should eat properly, drink lots of water, get plenty of sleep, exercise regularly and take fish
oils. She has strong feelings about food. “Wheat, dairy and sugar — when you have less of that, the better you feel,” she says. “The body really wants to be healthy. All it takes is to remove the deterrents.” She appears to have nailed her own health. Her skin is flawless, and she has beautiful hair that she tends to clip up

Chris Maynard, director of project management and sales with Andrew Roby, says anyone looking to renovate should consider sprucing two spaces for maximum added value to the home: the kitchen and master bathroom. “Any time you renovate the kitchen and master bathroom, it always adds great value,” Maynard says. “Also, adding heated square feet through an addition always carries value, as long as it doesn’t price the home out of the market.” Brian Hedgepeth, purchasing and estimating manager of custom homebuilder Kingswood Homes, agrees that kitchen and master bathroom renovations add the most value. The most common project we see is the covered patio. It doesn’t require a lot of room and is different from client to client based on what fits their needs best.� He adds, “Some clients just want a nice seating area for relaxing, reading and easy entertaining. ey, batter-batter. Swing, batter. It’s been a long time since those words have echoed along the streets of uptown Charlotte, but finally, minor league baseball has returned to the Queen City, setting up house in a brandspanking-new stadium on South Mint Street. The stadium’s new presence has made Charlotte an even more exciting place for both the casual and the committed sports fan. With affordable ticket prices, a killer view of the city’s skyline, and easy access to plenty of pre- and post-game entertainment, BB&T BallPark is the hottest thing in town this spring. And its reach extends further than just nine innings. Lindsey Roycraft, director of community and team relations for the Charlotte Knights, explains that the organization is centered on family fun and entertainment, not just homeruns and strikes. “It’s our goal that everyone leaves with a smile on his or her face,” she says. “Whether the team wins or loses — because we have no control over that — we just want the fans to be able to come out and have a great time, eat some delicious food, and hang out with friends and family.” The park’s proximity to all that downtown Charlotte has to offer is allowing visitors to spend plenty of time enjoying other spots around town before they head to the game. to watch baseball and explore the uptown area afterward. Both are options that simply weren’t available in the more remote area surrounding the team’s former Fort Mill-based ballpark — and it’s something that is transforming Knights baseball into a full-fledged entertainment experience. “We have people telling us they didn’t go to one game down in Fort Mill, yet they’ve been to 80 percent of our home games here in Charlotte. We’ve sold out most of our games so far. It’s so exciting to have these fans coming into the ballpark,” Roycraft says. Though the hype surrounding the new stadium is drawing a crowd organically, the front office remains proactive about reaching out to a wide range of people in the city, especially
its female fan base. So what makes Knights baseball appealing to women, specifically? For one, estimates put the number of women baseball fans in the U.S. at roughly 46 percent. Add in a gorgeous new stadium with the allure of downtown, and females are coming in droves. It helps that the Knights offer family and female-focused events and promotions, such as Family Night, where kids get to run the bases after games. There’s Country-Western Night, and Dog Day (where pooches are allowed at the park). For the kiddos, there’s Boy Scout and Girl Scout Nights, when troops get to pitch tents, sleep in the outfield, and watch movies on the Jumbotron. There’s also Pink Night. Players don
pink jerseys, while the park is decked out in pink to raise money for breast cancer research. But for many women, baseball in its purest form is fun enough … and thankfully, all types of fans, from serious to silly, are welcome at BB&T BallPark. Even the food and beverage selection has been elevated to a higher level at the new stadium. Baseball fans aren’t limited to hot dogs, burgers and heavy beers while at the game, although those are certainly available. The ballpark offers two full bars, serves Barefoot wine products, and has a wide range of food choices that will appeal to health-conscious visitors. With selections like Just Fresh and Salsarita’s, it’s easy to take in a game without having to pig out, a fact that

Roycraft says has received praise from female fans who “may like to eat a bit better than the guys do when they come to a game.” Knights fans also enjoy a more interactive experience than what you often find in the major leagues, which makes the game compelling for gamegoers with all levels of baseball knowledge and experience. Roycraft says, “At the minor league level, we have the duty of being more interactive with the fans. Before the games, the fans hang out by the dugout. Our players are great about signing autographs, saying hello, and talking to the kids. It’s really cool at the minor league level to watch them here, and then to get to see them grow and mature as a baseball player.” [TCW]

Her business, Permanent Facial Makeup By Judy, has many best-selling treatments, but permanent brows, eyeliners and lip liners are the most common. “Permanent makeup in general is a time-saver,” Fairchild says. “It gives you freedom. When you exercise or swim, or if you have oily skin and makeup rubs off easily, you no longer have to worry about that.” Fairchild says that her business is truly a form of art. She notes that permanent makeup takes an expert touch, and that takes time to develop. “It really takes time to develop your artistic ability,” she says. She is aware that people tend to have misconceptions about permanent makeup. “One common misconception is that permanent makeup looks unnatural,” she says. “For the first four days, it’s going to be heavier than the client wants, but once it heals, all of that calms down. It’s going to look like more is there at first because the pigment that you see is on top of the skin. Once the epidermis heals over it, it diffuses the color, but it has to be darker when it’s first done so that there is enough color left there when it heals.” She also notes that permanent makeup is not the same as getting a tattoo, and the technique doesn’t last forever. “In tattooing, ink is used,” she explains. “In permanent makeup, we use pigment. Everyone is different in terms of how long permanent makeup will last. It depends on a number of things — metabolism, the products you use on your face, how often you’re in the sun, etc.” For Fairchild, customer satisfaction is key. “When you have a client that is comfortable, you have a happy client,” she says. “It makes the whole procedure easier for them and for me!”

Just ask medical esthetician and certified laser technician Rachel Roff, the founder of Urban Skin Solutions, a local medspa that specializes in laser hair removal, medical weight-loss programs, IPL photofacials, chemical peels, Botox and fillers. “We specialize in diverse skin tones. There are skin conditions that are more prominent in different ethnicities. Most estheticians are trained to deal primarily with sun damage and anti-aging, prominent in Caucasian skin. But AfricanAmerican skin presents different problems, such as hyperpigmentation, ingrown hairs and skin discoloration,” Roff says. Roff is dedicated to treating all colors of skin. She says she was one of the first practitioners in Charlotte to incorporate a YAG laser, one that is safe for all skin tones. She also uses a YAG laser to safely remove hair on both light and dark skin. She adds, “Those with darker skin tones have to be very careful with laser treatments. There are many lasers that are safe for lighter skin tones, but not for darker skin. The melanin in darker skin will heat up and burn if the procedure is
not done correctly or with the right laser.” Other treatments also differ depending on skin color. For instance, Roff says those with Caucasian skin can have a chemical peel the day they come in, but those with darker skin require a different protocol and may need several visits before treatment to prevent scarring. “Chemical peels, if done incorrectly, can cause scarring,” she says. “All skin tones should be treated differently.” Professional skin treatments are only part of the equation. What You Need To Know About Hearing Loss oday’s Charlotte Woman checked in with audiologist Melissa Karp, owner of The Listening and Learning Center in Fort Mill, about hearing loss and the latest technological advances in hearing devices. Q: When does age-related hearing loss begin in women? A: Women can begin to experience age-related hearing loss, called presbycusis, as early as their 40s. The outer hair cells [sensory receptors of the auditory system] of the cochlea deteriorate over time and high frequencies are affected first. That’s the sounds of birds chirping and some consonants: the th’s, s’s and t’s. These are the sounds that give words meaning. It’s the difference between “deaf” and “death.” Q: What are the consequences of this kind of hearing loss? A: At this point, it can be very fatiguing and stressful. By the end of the day, you’ve exerted yourself so much by trying to listen to people that you are exhausted
and irritable. If you have young children at home — and the racket that goes along with that — it can make it hard to hear your spouse, which can cause friction. Over the long term, hearing loss can cause other problems, including depression, because a loss of hearing is very isolating. Q: What other factors can affect hearing? A: Some hearing loss has a genetic basis. Some medical conditions, such as diabetes and autoimmune diseases, are linked to hearing loss, and women have a higher incidence than men for these problems. Hearing can also be affected by ear infections and wax impaction, but these are usually temporary problems. Smokers have a higher incidence of damage to the inner ear. And, of course, exposure to loud noises — such as that found in loud work environments or rock concerts — affects hearing. Unfortunately, this type of loss is cumulative and irreversible. There’s another category of hearing loss that should be addressed — that caused by medications used to treat cancer. That’s something you should talk about with your doctor before you start treatment. Women should ask their doctors whether the medications they will be taking have that possible side effect, whether there are other drugs they can take instead, and if hearing will be monitored during treatment. Q: How do you know if you have suffered hearing loss? A: If you’ve ever experienced your ears ringing or the sound of crickets after being exposed to loud sounds, that tells you there has been damage. Obviously, if you’re having difficulty hearing, you should get your hearing checked. But age-related hearing loss usually happens so gradually, you don’t notice. That’s why everyone should have a baseline hearing test at age 50, just like getting a colonoscopy. Q: How can you avoid hearing loss? A: Going forward, be careful about the sound level on your MP3 and iPods. If I’m standing next to you, I shouldn’t be able to hear what you are listening to. And don’t turn up the radio in your car to drown out road noise — that can absolutely damage your hearing. Hair dryers and vacuum cleaners usually involve only a short exposure to high decibel noise and shouldn’t cause problems. But if you’re going to a concert or a NASCAR event, you should use earplugs.

Q: What can you do if you’ve suffered hearing loss? A: There are some really cool devices out now that can help. There are some hearing aids designed specifically for high frequency hearing loss. In general, the processing is getting better. And they have good sound quality and amplify sound where you need it. Some are Bluetooth enabled, which allows you to answer calls through the hearing aid. There are also some discreet assisted listening devices, like a pen that has multiple microphones on it that you sit on a table. These devices amplify the signals and send it to your hearing aid, and nobody else has to know. Some of the latest models are so tiny, you can hardly see them. Frankly, having to constantly say “Huh?” and “What did you say?” is a lot more noticeable than wearing one of these! [TCW]

A BANG UP JOB y friend Julie Haack (of Donald Haack Diamonds fame) always looks fantastic. When she somehow started looking even better than usual, I had to know what was different. Come to find out, she had a big birthday approaching and wanted a change in her life, so she switched salons. I immediately wanted to go see whoever made her look like that … but wondered how to break the news to my stylist of five-plus years. I bravely made the appointment with Pooran at Poza Salon in Myers Park. Julie’s disclaimers — ranging from,“Don’t mind how direct she is” to “You have a tough skin, you’ll be fine” — had me worried. After all, I’ve had the same bangs and bob hairdo since age 5 (with the exception of one disastrous home perm that is still brought up at class reunions). What if Pooran wanted to change my signature look? Appointment day came, and I was nervous. Pooran turned out to be one of those beautiful people who wears a pixie cut and looks like a supermodel. She sat me in her chair, ran her fingers through my hair, circled like a shark, then slowly began to speak. “Whose idea were the bangs?” she said in a serious tone that wasn’t really a question. “They are not right for your face shape or small forehead.
Let’s grow them out.” What?! Not my bangs! I almost left then. Something made me stay. “Now, let’s talk about your color,” she said. I informed her it was my natural color with a little help to hide the gray. She did not hold back. “Well, it’s dull and doesn’t add anything to your look,” she said. “Let’s brighten it up. Make it shinier and more youthful.” Then Pooran delivered the crushing blow. “You know … if I saw you across the room at a party, I’m not sure I’d find you interesting enough to talk to.” Ouch. As someone who practices public relations for a living and attends many events, I was wounded. She explained that my style for the past 40 years just didn’t match my personality, which I found disturbing, considering she had known me for only 10 minutes. “Too conservative” was the diagnosis. She added playfully, “The inside of your purse is very much like you.” I glanced down at my plain black Kate
Spade with a rainbow-striped lining and begrudgingly realized she was right. This woman was the hair whisperer. Intrigued, I decided to let her do her thing, from cut to color. And, while I didn’t notice a dramatic difference, the positive comments I received about my hair over the next few weeks made me a believer. For the same reason we hire accountants, attorneys and dog trainers, we should all remember to trust the hair experts. Since my visit, I’ve sent friends, my husband, 10-year-old daughter and 75year-old mom to see Pooran. With the same brand of blunt psychology and Edward Scissorhands skill, she gave each of them new looks that have generated rave reviews, including positive comments from strangers on the street. As for me, Pooran and I compromised on the bangs. I get to keep some of them — as long as I sweep them to the side and promise not to comb them straight down. And, rather than let my former stylist think I was running around town with roots from hell, I did the honorable thing and delivered the 2014 version of the “It’s not you, it’s me” speech.
