Flexible Growth Medium (FGM) & Bonded Fiber Matrix (BFM) are two types of hydraulically applied erosion control materials, designed as transitional soil stabilization systems. Composed of loose natural fibers and a binder, the matrix biodegrades within a year, as newly planted vegetation establishes roots, and provides long-term erosion protection. The hydraulic application allows the fiber mix to be sprayed from a distance onto inaccessible or dangerously steep areas, with slope ratios ranging from up to 1:1, as well as onto irregular surfaces. Typical applications include residential lawns, golf courses, earthwork, highway projects, stream channel stabilization, and mine reclamation. FGM Flexterra® is made of thermally processed long-strand wood fibers (Poplar, Pine and Oak), a co-polymer gel, and a vegetable hydro-colloid tackifier. Within two hours post application, the fibers bond internally and to the soil, gaining a blanketlike consistency, creating an instant effective erosion-resistant blanket. BFM Soil Guard is made of thermally treated and mechanically de-fibrated wood fiber (Aspen/Birch), a polysaccharide guar binder, and a slow release fertilizer. Both the FGM and BFM may be applied onto a newly seeded ground or combined with seeds to achieve a one-step application. The mix disperses rapidly in water and remains in uniform suspension under agitation, forming homogenous slurry for spray application. Once applied, the fibers form a continuous and strong moisture-retaining mat that conforms to the terrain contours. The water-resistant matrix requires no curing time, and is therefore effective as a rapid slope stabilization system for installations just prior to heavy rains. In comparison to Erosion Control Blankets (ECB), FGM and BFM do not have as high a tensile or shear strength, but they offer higher soil coverage and reduced soil loss from slopes during rain events. In addition, FGM and BFM do not require site preparation, reducing installation costs in comparison to ECB, which require extensive grading and staking. FGM and BFM can be used in conjunction with erosion control nettings in installations requiring a higher tensile strength, such as stream banks and shorelines, where sites are exposed to high-velocity wind or water.
