PubliCity STUDENTS Jirapa Tangpromphan Nattarat Dolsettawat Polawat Rujirawinijchai Voracha Smith YEAR 2016

Bangrak is considered a “Creative District”. We know it for its originality, its history, its variety of architectural style, the mixing of cultures and religions, the landmarks that signature the old and new Thailand. Most of the Bangrak’s open space is hard to reach. Private open space needs to be usable and being close to the word “public”, in order to make Bangrak memorable of the visitors. We aim to do it introducing mixed-use programs to solve the problems of open space (time-related activities, temporary art intervention, green elements) in order to restore the social interaction and support the quality of life of the community and of the visitors. We aim also to reconsider the right combination of passive and active design strategies in order to make an effective open space for the users.

Inner & Outer STUDENTS Chayantorn Nimmanwathana Korrawit Kanjanakuha Phunyanuch Amy Jongjitt YEAR 2016 “Inner & Outer” establishes the connectivity between inner and outer blocks within the district of Bangrak with architectural, landscape, art, infrastructure interventions combined in a masterplan. It emphasises the ambiguous artistic elements by using architecture as an assistant to guide the interventions: enhancing convenience of border crossing between technology within a few steps, accentuating the building’s features by display its interiors outside, obtain attention from incomers, establish a recreational space, create an equal flow of prosperity and, last but not least, fixing all the infrastructure problems. All, for a better and exuberant life in Bangrak.

Ari is considered as a sub-CBD district with a variety of programmes including governmental, commercial and residential zones. The intervention project at Ari aims to encourage the relationship between the local residents and also between visitors. Our concept is Allure, it intends to create diverse experiences to the outsiders by building up the relationship between the locals and the newcomers. In an architectural proposal, the project sees an opportunity to develop a district node in order to create gathering space for the area.

Ari Lively Ground

STUDENT Panyawat Terdkeat YEAR 2018

The main goal of the project is to transform Ari into an Active City as we see the site potential of a commercial and residential zone. By changing street nature (from car-based to pedestrian-priority) and providing a variety of facilities to support creative activities, we aim to make Ari a charming and physically active district. Another point of the masterplan is supporting the upcoming development of high-rise residential development: this happens to change the major mode of transportation into walking and shuttle bus, make a linkage to healthy attractions such as Ari park, fitness centre and running routes.

Lulu City STUDENT Mananchaya Nomnumsub YEAR 2018

“Lungs of Ari” is the design concept of Lulu City influenced by contemporary architecture design. The project aims to provide green space and bring greenery and fresh air into Ari. Lulu city can accommodate all ages of users by providing plenty of activities for family, workers, and visitors. We are focusing on making people enjoy and spend their leisure time, bringing active exercise, or doing creativity here. Considering the lack of public space creative space for people or young stars as a social issue of Bangkok, the project includes also dancing, workshop, art exhibition, and kite playing for developing people relationship. Moreover, it acts as a transit node that distributes pedestrian into Ari. As Lulu City is connected to Ari BTS Station and several bus stops, therefore, Lulu City is a city-wide gateway of Ari.

UD 223 Urban Design and Development Studio: Urban Intervention

As is found in the data collection, Ari’s economic activity drives and depends on many types of workers: cafes and restaurant owners, part-timers, SMEs / business owners, private and government office workers, street vendors, Tuktuk and motorbike drivers and creative freelancers. ‘Ari Dreamy Workplace’ aims to improve the lives of the workers by creating a good work-life balance in order to offer ‘a dreamy workplace’ where the workers are happy whilst attracting more people to come and work in Ari. My proposal for an Urban Intervention of our ‘Ari Dreamy Workplace’ is focused on the enhancement of the urban infrastructure of Ari. I proposed the designs basing them on 3 concepts: PedestrianFriendly and Urban Safety, More Income for Workers and Clean Mobility.

Inclusive Third Place STUDENTS Varot Techamanoon (Mixed-use Development) Kulsiri Siripaisankul Mesa Rattanasak Napatsorn Katechaiyo Peeradon Boriphit Peerapol Jirawattanaek Sarat Giratanavong YEAR 2016

The concept of ‘third place’ attempts to create an inclusive social space that is different from the conditions of home (first place) and office (second place). This began as we notice the rise in the number of the ageing population in the study area and the nearby districts. We aim to provide spaces, connectivity, and elements for social interactions which, though focus on the elderly people, are open to the local communities to use. With the completing of the MRT station, this would bring new visitors to participate in old and new programs in the areas. As part of the project, the mixed-use development provides new public space for interaction while experimenting with high-density development. The buildings include a wide range of programs both for public and private uses. The main user of the development is the new and existing residents of the old Bhudhares flat.

Urban Synergy: Park Tara STUDENTS Korrawit Kanjanakuha Natchawan Rermwandeethanachok Nattarat Dolsettawat Pattapong Theekhieo YEAR 2017

Park Tara is a mix-used commercial area which is a final destination that will connect Pakkret through the core centre of water transportation by traditional architecture and old buildings that must be conserved. Furthermore, the surrounding context was an old famous market. Park Tara with a transparency structure and high visualisation which allows a wide-angle view in order to decrease density from the context. By using height restriction to be the same height as the surrounding. Park Tara has potential on its traditional elements. We provide signature buildings with restricted height and try to make use of riverfront areas also to conserve the traditional architecture context. Providing conveniences and connectivity for visitors to transport easily. Therefore, we still maintain pedestrian-friendly which is the most crucial part of the design.

The site is on Muang Thong Thani lakeside, it is challenging in terms of high gaps between community and also many different programmes that have to consider. Muang Thong Thani itself had experienced a lesson of collapse in the real estate development due to the economic crisis and overestimate on the mega project. However, Muang Thong Thani has recovered and it is a potential site for future development. Around the area, there are several real estate development projects and the biggest convention centre in Thailand. With that, there is a great opportunity to be developed as MICE economic and community engagement.

UD 224 Urban Design and Development Studio: Infill Development

Flexie Flux STUDENT Pichanun Wattanalertpong YEAR 2017 This project took place at Muang Thong Thani lake that has been left a vast empty space for occasionally outdoor events and car parking. Besides that, the place has the potential in developing an infill development. As the place is connected to Impact Arena, Challengers, and other seminar halls that promoted to be MICE. As a result, there would be attracted to a large group of foreign businesses to be meeting and conferencing here most of the time. Thus, by catering this kind of event and this amount of people coming into this place would have to integrate people with an environment in order to move flexibly through smart connections as well as attractions to trigger social learning. In the future, there will be a BTS pink line passing the area having more convenience in commuting as well as less vehicle entering the place. The programs are adding to enrich and

enhance the MICE economic such as commercials, hotels, offices, theatre, museums, sports club, and condominiums. All of these programs have been calculated of FAR and OSR under the zoning of a comprehensive plan to maximize the building floor area. The smart technology is included to improve the environment as well as human beings.

Klong Toei area is surrounded mostly by CBD areas (Asok, and Thonglor & Ekkamai), industrial sites (logistic hub). However, Klong Toei today is still undeveloped and crowded with slums and poor housing. We want to improve the quality and environment of the area, as well as improve the local well being; the support of local business will provide more economic opportunity for the existent local conditions and will integrate the newcomers’ activity(business or leisure) with a local business. In the master plan, we develop several multi-function areas in order to make all the vacant sites and underdeveloped areas active throughout the day. We define our development into 3 sites; all of them are connected with the cluster of mixedused shophouse with local business downstairs and locals housing.

As we cannot stop the urbanisation, our goal is to save the orchid farm in the city in order to protect the economic value of Nakorn Pathom. Located at Phutthamonthon, Nakorn Pathom, the study found that there are several orchid farms residing on our site and most of them are famous

great farms to visit. With the new Phutthamonthon specific development plan, the government plans to have new infrastructure passing through this area, and together with the talk from one of the governors, water pollution is one of the key concerns. The contaminated water starting from the beginning of the Tha Chin River starting in Chi Nat and ending at Samut Sakhon. Orchid is one of the plants that require lots of clean water. This leads to our strategy which is to support the orchid farmland and urbanisation by keeping appropriate climate condition and make a clean city.

The Nourish STUDENTS Lalita Ounsakulseree Nopchanok Chawarnwongwut Phatcharaphon Chaitham Pichanun Wattanalertpong YEAR 2019 The greenfield project was taken place at Putthamonthon district, Nakhon Pathom where the province that remains the largest piece of agricultural land among other provinces in Bangkok Metropolitan Area as it contains fertile soil that enriches plants. According to EEC route is passing Nakhon Pathom as well and has been well known in logistic distribution. We recognised the fruit and flowers that have been exporting to the centre of Bangkok is mainly from Nakhon Pathom and have to rely on these resources. The population from the inner city has been spreading outwards and causing urban sprawl. This would cause disrupting of farmland and decrease resources. The project was to provide food and substances necessary for growth, health, and good condition. The food security is needed for urban areas by preserving farmland and control or limit urban sprawl. Under the limitation of urban sprawl would include increasing FAR and apply building codes to reach a maximum of green space as well as planning on urban heat control. Improving the efficiency of farmland would include water purification system, plant-e, vertical farming, floating farmland, flood prevention, increase biodiversity and flood tolerance crops in the flood-prone areas. Lastly, is to create a logistic on production and distribution linkage

Agrotourism STUDENTS Assajeree Worakulsawat Benjarat Charoensub Manlika Gordon Rinradee Krerksuparak YEAR 2019 Sampran is a district located at Nakhon Pathom province. It is well-known for cultural, religious and agriculture. Sampran also has many tourist attractions and a high number of tourists visiting the area due to its location near Bangkok, but the problem was that there are not enough activities to make them stay and it made the district become overlooked. In our project, we combine agriculture and tourism, which is then called ‘Agrotourism.’ This helped to promote the cultural and local assets of the area. We designed various types of homestays from local homestays to a luxury resort and commercial that sell local agriculture products. By doing this is not only to bring up the identity and characteristics of the area but also help to promote local products and boost up the area’s economy too.

Critical Eating in Module-D STUDENT Korrawit Kanjanakuha YEAR 2018

Food has always been a major part of Thai culture. By the great history of Thai food, it has inspired an idea of exploring the culture of food for this project. Critical Eating in Module-D focuses on the cycle of restaurant food management in the field of production and service in an innovative form. “Critical Eating” means to be analytical about food process-making until the process of reaching to the consumer. “Module-D” is an acronym that will involve innovative technology for sustainable food production and consumption within the restaurant by a variety of business collaboration. The project is located in Klong Toey District, Bangkok. According to research and data analytics, the district itself has high clusters of restaurants. The trend of the clustered restaurants was located in an area of BTS green line, MRT blue line, Bangkok University, and Klong Toey market. However, it is found that the location on the south of Klong Toey was highly dense with residential and blocked by an unutilised space under the expressway, which causes a “barrier” between the north and south of Klong Toey district physically, socially, and economically. The strategy is to improve basic and green infrastructure and accessibility horizontally and vertically. This will unlock the connectivity of land- and water-based systems, allowing new accessible space to form. Eventually, a new business can grow. In this new accessible space, it was planned to insert new zoning and programs such as food production research centre, gastronomy museum, culinary school, kitchen incubation, co-cooking space, new rental space, etc. These new programs were set to attract locals, students, adults, SMEs, investors, etc. The target goal is to fully utilise space effectively that can improve the quality of social life and economy in the district.

As we move toward the age of ‘Greener’ architecture, the idea of mixing between Green & Grey elements is now a well-known method. We inserted green space in manmade things such as architecture, as it is an element that can be both good and bad influences on the city. So my question is ‘how’ and ‘what’ we could do to create a `Greener’ architecture which will benefit on an urban scale. The concept is to create ‘chimney’ which is the air circulation movement for the people who live in the residential unit. A small communal space which acts as a micro-climate column will enhance the green aspect of urban life. The concept also aims to create a green facade and solar panel on the skin of the architecture, in order to create more environmentally-beneficial use of the building for the surrounding community. Creating more responsible architecture for the community through the aspect of public and private partnership in real estate.

The project aims to accommodate family-sized dwellers with middle-income status to achieve a good quality of life by generating new ideal middle-income community using the integration of public & private spaces and implementing greenery as an energy efficiency tool and liveable environment. It is to transform Din Deang district to be walkable and connected within its compound and surrounding context with a secure environment. Also, generating ground floor activities around the area to enhance the vibrancy of the location. The strategy is to improve and provide pedestrian ways both internal and external of the building compound with the integration of universal design for better accessibility. Moreover, an increasing number of transportation nodes using walkability distance (400 metres) as the main criterion to improve connectivities of people to main surrounding landmarks such as victory monument and Rama 9 area.
