The Fowler Legacy Group The Fowler Legacy Group is a Real Estate Firm headed by the president of the company, Brook Fowler, working alongside her father, Guy Fowler and her mother, Cindy Fowler. Over the years, they have sold many houses, accumulated many memorable experiences, and have become the stewards of the community in Temple by creating jobs and selling houses all over central Texas in order to establish something truly special. Guy Fowler especially has a humorous tale about how he sold a nearly unsellable house where a plane crashed many years ago.

to tell them: The planes already crashed into this house. What are the odds of it happening here?’ We were quickly able to put a ‘SOLD’ sign in front of that ‘FOR SALE’ sign. It was the talk of the town for a while.” Fowler Legacy Group’s honesty, sense of humor, and knowledge of the Central Texas area combined with years of experience in the real estate business helps their clients buy and sell real estate, using their expertise to help clients navigate the process and make the transaction as seamless and stress-free as possible.

“Several years back, there was a plane that crashed into a house. The owner called me and said, ‘Do you think you can sell this house?’ And I said, ‘Absolutely. I think I could sell it.’ And he goes, what are you going to tell them?’ I said, ‘I tell you what, I’m going

Lone Star Structures began as a dream for Lee and Sadie Fisher. Both of them grew up on family farms and saw firsthand the value of hard work. The desire to raise their family in a similar setting was instilled in their hearts and they set out to pursue that dream. Their vision came to fruition in 1997 with the purchase of a tract of land on US 77 between Lott and Rosebud Texas. A family friend came on board and together they designed and constructed their first building. By fall of that year production was in full swing. Today the family members are involved in the business one way or another. The Fishers are actively involved in their church and are members of Faith Mennonite Fellowship. They live and believe in the timeless and old-fashioned values of honesty, integrity and good work ethics. These values are more than mere traditions, but are a lifestyle of time honored values that in turn bless their community. These principles have earned them a reputation for having the best value and workmanship in Central Texas. Today their business continues to grow and has expanded to include various styles and options. In addition to their main location in Lott and a sales office in Temple, they also have an online store where you can shop and purchase 24/7. They invite you to join their long list of satisfied customers!

Green’s Sausage House

Green’s Sausage House, owned by Charles Green and his brother Marvin Green, owe their legacy to their father, Jerome Green and then-partner Jerry Beran, who started the business in 1946. Charles and his brother took over the business in 1985, and they’ve been running it ever since. “I remember when we were kids still in school” Mike Green, said as he reminisced on the past. “We actually used to come here sometimes in the morning before school. We really did make sausage. Of course, we’re always working on weekends. We’re doing things, having fun, we’re always working. But it was a good family friendly business. At the time being a kid, you don’t think it’s a lot of fun, then when you look back, it’s good memories.” Marvin Green spoke with passion about the company, his love and drive of his products being very evident.

Most businesses don’t survive long enough to welcome a third generation. But Green’s Sausage House has been lucky enough to do just that. One of Marvin and Billye’s sons, Chad Green, joined in 2013. Charles and Jackie’s son-in-law Nick Lambert joined in 2015.

200 copies and inquired as to how long it would take. To my amazement, they said I could wait for it. Not only that, I was privileged to watch them do it, and voila! In about five minutes, it was printed, wrapped and sold to me at an extremely competitive price. As I walked out the door, I remember thinking, ‘This is the future,’” Elwood says.

“I was traveling going to colleges where I was recruiting, and I always needed some copies of my materials. But back in 1972, there was no way to make a copy. You had mimeograph machines. You could make a matrix and put it on there and crank the handle, and it would kick out 50 copies. But if I wanted to give exact copies, I had to go to the local printer. When the printer said, “I’m sorry, but I can’t do 50. But I can print you 2000 at 30 bucks,’ which was expensive back then and that was very frustrating. I had to find a better way.” Everything would change for Elwood in San Antonio, where he walked into a strip mall to go print something where he saw a machine that would alter the trajectory of his life.

After that, Elwood opened his first instant printing shop, Speedy Print, in Temple.

“Early in 1972, I happened to be in San Antonio for a meeting and came

across a new business called Quick Printing. I went inside and asked for

“We have always tried to put the customer first. If buyer customer service representatives are busy and a new customer walks through the door, they are taught to speak to that customer and acknowledge their presence,” Elwood says. “I know this is a little thing, but it is a big thing to me.”

Perry Office Plus

Perry Office Plus was founded in 1920. It was originally a printing company that transitioned into Office products and furniture pretty quickly. Back in the 70s, it was called American Printing until H.B. Macy’s parents bought the company in 1994. The legacy would continue when Macy and his wife, Lindsey, purchased the company in 2022. Starting January 1st of this year, the company focused on printing, but now they focus their business on being versatile and doing anything from printing to providing office products, office furniture, janitorial, promotional supplies, laundry supplies, kitchen supplies, and almost anything a customer would ever need. “We do a little bit of everything. Building our business has transitioned so much in the past five years. Traditional office supplies are declining

Alfred Lastovica opened his doors in 1950, in downtown Temple with the help of his wife, Joan. Once the store was running smoothly, Joan returned to her career as a registered nurse. The Lastovicas were blessed with three sons and one daughter. The boys followed in Alfred Sr.’s footsteps. Johnny’s irst day at the store was the day after his graduation from Kilgore College in 1974, where he earned his degree as a Certi ied Horologist and Jewelry Repairman. Alfred literally handed his son the keys to the store, and left the next day for a much needed week long vacation! Johnny quickly learned how to manage Lastovica Jewelers. Billy came on board in 1981, after earning his B.B.A. at Sam Houston State University as well as a degree at Kilgore in 1981, where he mastered jewelry crafting and casting. Alfred Jr. is a GIA Certi ied Gemologist in Houston. When you visit the store, you’ll also meet Johnny’s wife Diane, and Billy’s wife, Helen. We also service counties around Bell County. What I like to reminisce about is just how long we’ve been doing this. We surround ourselves with great folks that make it easy.”

Lonesome Pine Nursery

Twenty-seven years ago Henry and Jeanette decided they were too old to manhandle cabinets anymore. With that decision, they handed over the customcabinetry business to their son, James, and opened Lonesome Pine Nursery on the same property. “People are much nicer buying plants!” Linda Neighbors, a customer since day one, quips “Henry charged extra for these weeds!” Jeanette says, “We don’t have a business, we have one big family” and that really is how it feels at Lonesome Pine. In October 2020 Henry passed away after 52 years of marriage to Jeanette. But his legacy lives on at the nursery in a portrait that sits among the plants in the greenhouse, keeping Jeanette company in spirit during her work days.

Truth and decency are its guiding principals and its daily determination is to print the news without fear or favor.” “We have a strong commitment to the communities we serve,” said Sue Mayborn, the Telegram’s editor and publisher. “We strive daily to bring you the news that is important to your daily lives. It is our job to present the information to you fairly and accurately.” Frank Mayborn came to Temple in 1929 with his father, Ward, when they bought the Telegram. While Ward soon decided to pursue other opportunities, Frank, except for a volunteer tour of duty in WWII, made Temple his home, building and working for the betterment of Central Texas. Following Frank Mayborn’s death in 1987, his wife Sue, who had worked by his side at the newspaper for many years, assumed the roles of president, editor and publisher.

The Telegram and the Killeen Daily Herald are two of the very few general circulation daily newspapers owned by a local individual in Texas, according to the Texas Press Association. There are 64 full- and part-time employees, a network of correspondents and photographers, and more than 40 independent contract carriers in the Telegram family who all work to deliver local news and information to a large Central Texas audience. The Telegram has expanded regional coverage through FME News Service – a joint initiative with the Killeen Daily Herald. The two newspapers also work together to produce Tex Appeal Magazine, a lifestyle publication that is delivered to the newspapers’ subscribers. Complimentary copies also are available at businesses throughout Bell County. The Telegram’s website, tdtnews.com, which attracts more than 1.2 million unique visitors a year, features local news, sports and entertainment along with an electronic version of the print edition and more than 240,000 archived articles and photos available to subscribers. The site was recognized as the “Online Newspaper of the Year” by the Texas Associated Press Managing Editors Association –two years in a row. The Telegram’s news app gives users instant access to the website as well as breaking news alerts from their phone, tablet or mobile device. The app can be downloaded for free at the Apple App Store or Google Play. The Fort Hood Sentinel is also part of

the Telegram family. The Sentinel has been produced by the Telegram via a contract with the U.S. Army for more than 70 years. The weekly newspaper is distributed to all on-post housing and hundreds of newsstands across the region. The Telegram also serves audiences and advertisers with niche publications and websites, including the Central Texas Community Guide, CentralTexasTickets.com and JobsCentralTexas.com. “Local news matters to our community,” Mrs. Mayborn said. “We take very seriously our role and responsibility in being a credible news source, providing our readers with the information they need to make decisions on matters affecting their lives.”
