“My senior year, the school said it would be cool to have the starting quarterback play the national anthem before a game. I told them no because I’d be thinking about the game,” he said.
“Football was my first love. There were no privacy fences back then, so all of the backyards were lined up. You had a hundred-yard field, and that’s all we did as kids. Your mom would step out the back door and scream your name. You’d run home and eat, and then run back.”
“I hope our players have the same respect for me that they had for Pete, or at least the same trust that they have the right guy at the helm who’s going to make all the tough decisions that are going to benefit the team.”
Harmon’s life has him prepared for new role
His only respite from the trombone was in high school on Friday nights in the fall.
ByERIC DRENNAN TELEGRAM SPORTS EDITOR BELTON — He’s been playing or coaching football in some capacity for almost his entire life, but so many things are new to Mary Hardin-Baylor head coach Larry Harmon.Promoted in January after two decades as UMHB’s defensive coordinator, he’s eight months into his first job as a head coach and is still settling into the role while trying to prepare the Crusaders for their quest to repeat as NCAA Division III champions.
“There’s an adjustment. A bunch of us have new responsibilities. We’re still figuring each other out as a staff, and the kids are doing the same thing. We’re all trying to adjust,” Harmon said while sitting behind the desk in his new office, where the walls are still mostly bare and the faint smell of new carpet and paint hangs in the air.“This is good for me, though, because I did the same thing for so many years. I wanted something a little different,” he continued. “That’s the cool part about this. There’s some unknowns.
“I was in the band because my parents told me in seventh grade that I had to play an instrument in order to play sports,” he recalled. “My best friend really liked music and said he was going to play the trombone, so I picked the trombone. About three days later, he quit and my mom wouldn’t let me quit. So I was stuck from seventh grade through my senior year playing the trombone.”
In need of a full-time job, Harmon spent an entire day in the spring of 1999 being interviewed by former UMHB head coach Pete Fredenburg for the defensive coordinator’s position with the Crusaders. Again, there was a snag — Fredenburg had already offered the job to Corky Nelson — and again, Harmon stuck with his plan,“Peteeventually.toldme, ‘I’ve offered the job to Corky Nelson, and he’s a Texas legend. If he doesn’t take it, I’ll offer you the coordinator’s job. If he does take it, I also have a part-time secondary job open. Would you be interested?’” Harmon said. “I went back to Northwest Missouri thinking I wasn’t going to take the secondary job and restarted the job hunt.” After Nelson accepted the job, he invited Harmon to spend a few days with him at his house. Harmon then decided — for a couple of reasons — UMHB was the place be.“In the back of my mind at the time, I really thought Pete would stay a few years and then go back to Division I, and I wanted to hang on to his coat tails,” Harmon said. “I also realized that the knowledge I’d gain here would be more beneficial than the monetary value of a part-time paycheck. I took a leap of faith.”
Once he got to high school, Harmon was a standout quarterback who also saw time as a cornerback and safety. He was fulfilling his childhood dreams.
“They won a couple of state championships when I was growing up, so you always wanted to be one of those guys,” he said. “When we had an away game, everybody went and there was nobody left in Fort“It’sPierre.ablue-collar town. Everybody’s hard-working, so football just relates to thoseRecruitedpeople.”as a quarterback, Harmon packed his bags when high school was done and headed for South Dakota State. College days After seeing his childhood dreams come true in high school, Harmon’s college plans didn’t pan out exactly like he thought they would but — just like he’d done with the trombone — he stuck it out.The Jackrabbits already had a talented quarterback, and Harmon didn’t want to sit on the bench so he asked for a position change.“Ittook me about three days to realize that I didn’t have what the other guy had,” he said. “I just wanted to play. So I went to the coach that recruited me and said, ‘Hey. I’m not going to play being behind him. Is there any way I can make a move?’ He said there was a need at linebacker, so I played linebacker my first two years. Then they moved me to safety for my junior and senior year. “I wasn’t real good but I was good enough to play. I probably led the conference in pass interference calls my senior year.”Itwas during his playing days at South Dakota State that Harmon decided he wanted to be a coach. After his playing days were over, his plan was to become a graduate assistant somewhere and eventually get to the Division I level as a coach.
“When I finished playing, I had a chance to be a grad assistant at North Dakota or Northwest Missouri State,” he said. “I picked Northwest Missouri State. We went 12-1 my first year then won the national championship my second year, and then I came to Texas.” Finding a home at UMHB
Harmon spent the 1999, 2000 and 2001 seasons drawing a part-time paycheck, calling the defense the last of those years while Nelson still carried the coordinator’s title. When Nelson retired in the spring of 2002, Harmon was named the coordinator and never left.
One thing is for sure. No matter how bumpy the journey is or how many twists and turns it takes, Harmon will stick with it.He’s spent a lifetime proving that. Growing up Born in Pierre, S.D., and raised on the western side of the nearby Missouri River in the small town of Fort Pierre, Harmon received an early lesson on what it means to stick with something instead of quitting.
“I was offered some other jobs, but Pete always took care of me,” Harmon said. “I had a couple of opportunities that were big enough to go take a look at. I just didn’t want to Becauseleave.”hestuck it out at UMHB, Harmon is now the head coach of a program that is coming off its second national championship and is ranked No. 1 entering his first season at the helm.
And the kind of guy who won’t quit on them. Harmon has spent a lifetime proving that.

“I know I’ll be better at this in two years than I am right now.”
The game has never been far from Harmon’s mind. Other than football, basketball, baseball, wrestling, hunting and fishing, there wasn’t much else to do in Fort Pierre, with a population of about 2,500.“Ifyou were an outdoor person, it was great living there,” he said. “If you were a person who wanted to know what the latest style and clothes were, not so much.
Sure, there’s pressure to deliver another title. But then again, that’s nothing new to Harmon.“There’s pressure, but there’s not any more than what there was before,” he said. “There has always been the expectation to win here.

Offense The Crusaders have nine starters back on offense, but almost everything else is entirely different on that side of the ball. That includes a new set of position coaches and a new scheme implemented by new coordinator Andy Padron, a former UMHB quarterback who has returned to his alma mater to direct an offense that averaged 479.2 yards and 48.9 points per game in last year’s undefeated run to the“It’stitle.a lot different,” King said of Padron’s offense. “It’s a little more complex, as far as what I have to register and the receivers have to register. Coach Padron is a good coach, though, and he has great schemes. I’m excited about what our offense can potentially do this year.”
ByERIC DRENNAN TELEGRAM SPORTS EDITOR BELTON — Mary Hardin-Baylor walked off the field last December as the king of Division III college football, with its second national championship trophy in tow.Now the Crusaders embark on a new season as the No. 1-ranked team in the country, cognizant of the fact that they have to go all the way back to the starting line for the long race to Annapolis, Md., and the 49th edition of the Stagg“SomeBowl.people have the mentality that when they win a national championship, they can just go get it again. They forget about the work that they went through to get in that position,” senior defensive end Sante Parker said. “It’s a whole process.” Tasked with overseeing that process is new head coach Larry Harmon after his promotion from defensive coordinator to replace the retired Pete Fredenburg, who presided over the program for its first 24 years and two national titles.Harmon was on Fredenburg’s staff for all but the first of those 24 seasons. He’s well-versed in the process and knows the pitfalls that can ensnare a defending champion.
“We have a bunch of good running backs. We’ve already talked about how they’re so talented and we can’t get them all on the field at one position,” Harmon said. “We’re looking at who we can

Senior quarterback Kyle King is back to lead the UMHB offense after throwing for 2,682 yards and 35 touchdowns last season.
“We’re going to stick to the process because everything is about having your best football team when the playoffs start.” Once again, there’s only one goal in mind for UMHB. “We’ve got a lot of talent,” senior quarterback Kyle King said. “We’ve been talking that it’s either a national championship or bust.”
WEDNESDAY, August 24, 2022 TEMPLE DAILY TELEGRAM / 3FOOTBALL 2022
It all starts with King, who threw for 2,682 yards and 35 touchdowns with only two interceptions last season, and he has plenty of playmakers around him.The receivers corps is headlined by speedy senior KJ Miller and 6foot-6 senior Brandon Jordan, who were King’s top targets last year when they combined for 131 catches totaling 1,998 yards and 28Thetouchdowns.onlyspotto fill out wide is the one that was manned by Brenton Martin — third on the receiving list last season — but Harmon believes he has plenty of capable replacements.
“I think with Andy’s system, we’re going to have plenty of guys to pick up the slack,” Harmon said. “We usually carry seven (receivers) on the varsity, and it’s going to be really hard to get down to that number.”
“You’re constantly fighting apathy. There’s a saying that a fed lion isn’t as hungry as a lion that hasn’t eaten in a couple of days,” said Harmon, whose team opens the season Sept. 3 at home against No. 11 Muhlenberg. “It’s human nature that Mount Union might be hungrier. Hardin-Simmons will be hungrier than we are because they didn’t win it. We won it, and they want it. We have to be aware of that and go out every single day and work to deserve the right to compete for a national championship.
The group of running backs might be even deeper. Senior Aphonso Thomas (1,128 yards rushing last year) and junior Kenneth Cormier (849 yards) return and are joined by a plethora of talented teammates — so many, in fact, the coaching staff might have to switch things up.

No. 6 Texas A&M
Texas A&M knows the path to winning its first national title since 1939 goes through Alabama, and the Oct. 8 game in Tuscaloosa, Ala., between the two already looms large.
A&M coach Jimbo Fisher spent the offseason making headlines because of a spat with Alabama’s Nick Saban.
Returning starters: 13
“They understand it really well. They both do,” Fisher said. “Conner has picked it up very well for a young freshman. He’s a very intelligent guy, a very instinctive guy. If he makes a mistake, he doesn’t repeat it very often. He’s very encouraging in that way and developing. Max is doing the same thing.”
“We have more guys at the skill positions that, even though they don’t have a lot of experience, they are dynamic playmakers,” co-offensive coordinator Darrell Dickey said. “They may be young guys, but we have guys that can run, that can catch the ball, make a guy miss and go the length of the field.”

Texas A&M’s offense has bigplayRunningpotential.back Devon Achane, a junior who is a sprinter on the Aggies’ track team, moves into the starting lineup this season after running for 910 yards in a reserve role in 2021. Achane led the SEC and ranked in the top 15 in the country last season by averaging 7 yards a carry.
Defensive star Junior defensive back Antonio Johnson is poised to become A&M’s defensive leader after a strong 2021 season in which he was second on the team with 79 tackles and had one interception and five pass breakups.
“The goal for this team is to compete for the national championship,” Aggies guard Layden Robinson said. “We want to rise to the occasion, especially when the lights are the brightest. We just want to rise up this season.”
Running back Devon Achane will move into a starting role for Texas A&M after rushing for 910 yards last season as a backup.
Three players are vying for the starting quarterback job — Haynes King, Max Johnson and Conner Weigman.
Joining him this season is speedy freshman receiver Evan Stewart, who like Weigman was a five-star recruit and was rated as the No. 1 receiver in Texas.
King won the job last year, but he broke his leg early in the second game. Zach Calzada started the rest of the season before transferring to Auburn. Johnson was the starter at LSU last season before transferring to A&M. The son of Super Bowlwinning QB Brad Johnson, he threw for 2,815 yards and 27 touchdowns with six interceptions. Perhaps the most intriguing of the group is Weigman, a five-star prospect and one of the stars of Fisher’s top-ranked recruiting class. The dual-threat QB accounted for almost 2,900 yards and 34 touchdowns as a high school senior last season after throwing for more than 3,800 yards and 42 touchdowns as a junior.Fisher has been encouraged by how Johnson and Weigman have handled learning his offense.
“He’s going to do a little bit of everything,” Fisher said. “He’ll play nickel, safety, dime. We can move him around and match him up because he’s such a tremendous football player.”
The trash talk between the coaches has ended now that the season is approaching, and Fisher and No. 6 Texas A&M will try to take the next step and compete with the top-ranked Crimson Tide for Southeastern Conference superiority.TheAggies handed Alabama its only regular-season loss last year but fell to unranked Mississippi State and LSU to leave Fisher without a 10-win season in four years in College Station.
The schedule The Aggies open the season Sept. 3 against Sam Houston State in the first of three home games capped by a visit from No. 16 Miami on Sept. 17. They head to AT&T Stadium in Arlington the following week for their annual neutral-site game against No. 19 Arkansas. Three consecutive road games come next. seeking SEC superiority

“I’m not the backup quarterback anymore, so I’ve got to take full control of everything that’s going on, on the field,” Shapen said. “I think I learned a lot of things being the backup. Stepping up into a leadership role is key for me right now.”
BySTEPHEN HAWKINS ASSOCIATED PRESS WACO — Baylor settled on its top quarterback in the spring, giving sophomore Blake Shapen time to adjust to his new role and letting the 10th-ranked Bears prepare for this season knowing their starter.
Shapen was 62-of-86 passing for 596 yards and five touchdowns without an interception in limited action last season, and that included being the Big 12 championship game MVP in one of his two starts when Bohanon had a late-season hamstring injury. Bohanon was back for the Sugar Bowl victory that capped Baylor’s record 12-win season after Shapen hurt his shoulder.

The Big 12 schedule starts Sept. 24 at Texas Tech, and the annual Red River Rivalry game with Oklahoma is Oct. 8 in Dallas.
“Having Coach Patterson on board has probably been something that has excited me the most out of a lot of things we’ve done this offseason,” Sarkisian said. “I’ve always admired his defensive mind.”
With a first-year starter at quarterback, Sarkisian will lean heavily on his dependable run game.

The schedule
In the backfield
Texas starts the season unranked after a 5-7 finish in 2021 and the longest losing streak since 1956 in head coach Steve Sarkisian’s debut. Years of legacy votes that presumed Texas was deserving of preseason rankings finally vanished after too many seasons of unmet expectations. And yet, there is optimism in Austin. At least the kind that assumes last season was so bad, this one has to be better. For starters, there is talent on campus in the form of some of college football’s best playmakers. The fluid and powerful Robinson (who drives the Lamborghini courtesy of a name, image and likeness sponsorship deal) is one of the top backs in the country. Wide receiver Xavier Worthy had an explosive freshman season in 2021 and should be among the favorites for the Biletnikoff Award. The rest is anyone’s guess.
Texas hasn’t won the Big 12 title since 2009, and most pick the Longhorns for the middle of the pack again. Still, that would be a step up from last year. Quarterback Ewers has a strong arm but lacks college experience. He was the quarterback everyone wanted out of Southlake Carroll, and Ohio State signed him. But a freshman season of sitting around in Columbus, Ohio, prompted a transfer. That put him in a fight for the job with Card, who started the first two games in 2021 before getting benched. Second-half follies

Robinson is the star after rushing for 1,127 yards and 11 touchdowns in a season cut short by a dislocated elbow. Behind him are workhorse Roschon Johnson and speedy Keilan Robinson. Hot seat Sarkisian may have felt some heat from Texas fans during his debut season, but not so much from the administration and Board of Regents that approved his original six-year, $34.2 million guaranteed contract. But Texas likely won’t abide another years-long skid like it endured under Charlie Strong from 2014-2016.
Sarkisian mined the transfer portal about as well as anybody and even landed a starting quarterback in freshman Quinn Ewers, who beat out Hudson Card for the job. But that road has been bumpy, with one transfer receiver (Isaiah Neyor from Wyoming) lost for the season to a knee injury and another (Agiye Hall from Alabama) suspended indefinitely. And an offensive line already strapped for depth lost starter Junior Angilou, who can play multiple positions, for the season to a knee injury.

A blockbuster matchup with No. 1 Alabama on Sept. 10 will determine if Texas is ready for prime time. Then comes a matchup with rising UTSA, where head coach Jeff Traylor — a former Longhorns assistant — could snag a huge statement win.
The Longhorns lost five games that they led at halftime last season. Texas has to shake off a combination of bad second-half adjustments and suspect conditioning if it doesn’t want to get dominated in the third and fourth quarters again. Hiring former TCU head coach and defensive guru Gary Patterson as a special assistant may prove to be Sarkisian’s shrewdest move of the offseason.
ByJIM VERTUNO ASSOCIATED PRESS AUSTIN — Bijan Robinson and his Lamborghini sum up what a lot of folks believe Texas football should be — flashy, fun to watch and faster than anybody else out there.Far too often, however, the Longhorns find a way to run themselves into a ditch.

“Once you’ve put in that work, you put in the work all summer, you know what you have. You know the foundation you set,” fifth-year cornerback Mark Milton said. There will be no sneaking up on anyone this year. Along with their top-10 ranking, the Bears are the preseason Big 12 favorites for the first time.

The Bears are solid up front with plenty of experience on both sides of the line.
“Coach has reiterated that we’re going to have a target on our back,” Holmes said. “We’ve got to go out there with something to prove still.”
“Everybody knows the words we’re saying. Everybody knows the terms. Everybody knows what the expectations are,” Galvin said. “It’s nice. You’re not having to really reinforce those.”
The defensive front is anchored by 6-foot4, 358-pound All-Big 12 defensive tackle Siaki Ika. Drafted defenders Big 12 defensive player of the year Jalen Pitre, who played a hybrid linebacker-defensive back position, and All-Big 12 linebacker Terrel Bernard were both NFL draft picks. Middle linebacker Dillon Doyle, a fifth-year senior with 23 consecutive starts, is the top returning tackler with 90 last season. Matt Jones and Garmon Randolph also have started games at linebacker. The schedule Baylor opens the season at home against FCS team Albany then has a loaded road schedule. Former Temple star Quentin Johnston is primed for a big junior season after hauling in 55 receptions for 1,121 yards through his first two seasons at TCU.
“TCU is about winning championships,” Dykes said. “I want to coach in this kind of environment where there has been that level of success and there’s that level of expectations as well.” No. 1 vs. No. 1 Two of the fastest and most skilled players on TCU’s team wear the same number and go against each other in practice. “I got over here in 2017 and was like, ‘Wow. This is a great place. Fort Worth’s a great town. The 100th Iron Skillet rivalry game last year in Fort Worth had a chaotic postgame scene in which some Mustangs players tried to plant their school flag on TCU’s midfield logo. The Big 12 opener is Oct. 1 against ninth-ranked Oklahoma before five conference games on the road, including at No. 10 Baylor and No. 12 Oklahoma State.
Defensive transfers TCU’s defensive front may look different, but new coordinator Joe Gillespie’s schemes generally use five secondary players like Patterson’s did. The Frogs added two transfer defensive backs who could make an immediate impact. Mark Perry had 72 tackles and three interceptions last season at Colorado, and Josh Newton had 48 tackles and eight pass breakups for Louisiana-Monroe.
Perry’s first game for the Frogs will be on the road against his old team. TCU has a Friday night opener at Colorado on Sept. 2. The schedule TCU closes its non-conference schedule Sept. 24 when Dykes returns to SMU.
Max Duggan and Chandler Morris went into fall camp competing to be the starting quarterback. Duggan started 29 games the past three seasons, and Morris started twice last year while Duggan dealt with a fractured bone in his foot.

Tomlinson is the nephew of Hall of Fame running back and former TCU standout LaDainian Tomlinson, but the All-Big 12 defensive back is making a name for himself.
“My uncle is outstanding. Personally, I have to live up to myself first,” Tre’ Tomlinson said. “That’s how I go about it.”
“You’re not going to have a season without some adversity,” said Duggan, adding his frustration was more about another losing season for TCU than his injury. Morris threw for 461 yards and two touchdowns in his first start against Baylor. His 531 total yards were the secondmost in school history, but he got hurt in the next game.

The season opener Sept. 3 against Murray State is the first of seven home games for the Red Raiders. Five of those are Big 12 games, including No. 9 Oklahoma, No. 10 Baylor and Texas visiting Lubbock. There are back-to-back non-conference games against top-25 teams when Tech hosts future Big 12 team No. 24 Houston on Sept. 10 and goes to No. 13 North Carolina State the next week.

McGuire aims to bring title to Texas Tech
“People have said, ‘How long is that going to take?’ Well, it’s my job to accelerate the process,” McGuire said. “I want it to happen this year, and I know the team does,Thattoo.”would be quite a turnaround, considering the Red Raiders haven’t had a winning record in Big 12 play since Mike Leach’s final season in 2009. When Tech was 7-6 last year after a Liberty Bowl victory, it was the first time in six seasons it finished above .500 overall.

“I believed the players would buy in to what we were going to do, but I didn’t think it was going to be as fast as it has been,” McGuire said. The quarterbacks Former Oregon transfer Tyler Shough threw for 872 yards and six touchdowns over four games last season before a broken collarbone. Donovan Smith started the final four games, and redshirt freshman Behren Morton also is in the mix. McGuire described “a three-horse race” to be the starter but anticipates using multiple quarterbacks. The schedule
BySTEPHEN HAWKINS ASSOCIATED PRESS LUBBOCK — Joey McGuire describes himself as a high school coach who gets to coach college football. He is, after all, a Texas native who won three state championships at Cedar Hill. McGuire is now the head coach at Texas Tech after his transition to college coaching the past five years as an assistant at Baylor. He brought an infectious enthusiasm to an already passionate Tech fan base desperate for a title of its own.

“Physically, he’s going to be fine. He has the athleticism to play there,” Harmon said. “His thing is that he’s going to have to go from being a guy who had someone back there with him telling him what to do, to being that guy himself. He’s going to have to be a leader. He’s been doing a great job so far.”
“We were a stacked defense last year. Some of those players are gone, so now some people might not think as much of us,” he said. “We’re going to change their minds.”
“Andy’s offenses have always been successful and scored a lot of points. He’s a phenomenal coach. I like his mind. He’s really intelligent and very meticulous,” Harmon said. “We have a lot of weapons on offense, and I think we’re going to be able to get the ball to everybody. “If we were playing 7-on-7, I don’t know if we’d ever get beat. Our kids are pretty good at throwing and catching.”
Parker believes his defensive mates are up to the challenge.

“We’re going to be fine at tackle,” Harmon said. “We’re trying to fill a spot at end because Sante is the only one back with any experience there. That’s a big concern.”Junior Omari Frazier will be the other starting linebacker for a second straight season. Senior Titus Dunk returns to start at cornerback again, with junior Chaka Watson and sophomore Trashawn Adams vying for the starting corner spot on the otherJuniorside.Jordan See is a candidate to fill the strong safety slot that became vacant in the offseason when senior Tommy Bowden made the switch to free safety to replace Fritz.Bowden, a former backup quarterback whose only two starts at strong safety last year were in the national semifinal game and the Stagg Bowl, is now charged with directing traffic in the secondary.
Last season, the UMHB defense limited opponents to 238.2 yards and 10 points per game. The Crusaders believe they can be just as effective this year, if the new linebackers can hold their own and someone steps up to partner with Parker at defensive“Theend.back end of the defense is where a young kid can play because it’s not so much about mental toughness as it is athletic ability,” Harmon said. “Where it’s tough to get a young kid to come in and help you is on the D-line. It’s about mental toughness there because it’s eat or get ate on every single play.”
12 / TEMPLE DAILY TELEGRAM WEDNESDAY, August 24, 2022FOOTBALL 2022 move and where we can move them to because we have a stable of them right now, about eight of them who can probably play.”There’s no need to shift anything around on the offensive line, where the entire starting group anchored by senior center Jeffery Sims is back, and senior Anthony Avila will handle the kicking duties again. That just leaves a void to fill at tight end, where junior Connor Mullins and Missouri Western State transfer Will McClintock could be the best fits.
The new linebackers will have some experienced players in front of them, with senior Pete Smith and junior Tristan Green back as the starting tackles and Parker at one of the end spots.
Defense UMHB’s biggest needs are on a defense that is directed by new coordinator Jack Johnson, who was promoted from linebackers coach and has to find replacements for two linebackers (Jacob Mueller and Akeem Jackson) who led the team in tackles a year ago and an AllAmerican safety (Jefferson Fritz) among others.Filling in for Mueller and Jackson should be some combination of sophomores Khyren Deal, Durand Hill, LaDamian Bailey and Johnny Smith-Rider. It’s a quick and agile group, but one that’s unproven in“Ourbattle.linebackers can really run and have great length and decent instincts. We’re really athletic there,” Harmon said. “The question is whether we’ll have enough lead in our pencils to punch, get off blocks and get to the ball.”
Overall, it’s a skilled and deep pool of athletes for an offense that — once it gets a complete handle on the new scheme — expects to light up the scoreboard.

Needs: There are several questions on the offensive line that need answers. Topping the list is left guard after Dallas let Williams go in free agency. Smith is a tackle but could fill that spot. Center Tyler Biadasz was inconsistent last year. Left tackle Tyron Smith hasn’t stayed healthy in recent years, so the Cowboys will have to think about the lineup behind their eight-time Pro Bowler.
14 / TEMPLE DAILY TELEGRAM WEDNESDAY, August 24, 2022FOOTBALL 2022
Last year: The Texans were 4-13 for the second straight season after winning the AFC South the previous two years, costing coach David Culley his job. With quarterback Deshaun Watson sitting out, Houston relied on Tyrod Taylor early before giving rookie Davis Mills a chance. Ineffective play at quarterback paired with a defense that ranked near the bottom of the NFL doomed the Texans.
Important additions: T Tyler Smith (firstround pick), DE Sam Williams (secondround pick), DE Dante Fowler, WR James Washington. Important losses: WR Amari Cooper, DE Randy Gregory, G Connor Williams, WR Cedrick Wilson.

Houston Texans
Important losses: Watson, Taylor, S Justin Reid, CB Lonnie Johnson Jr., RB David Johnson, TE Jordan Akins, DE Jacob Martin, CB Terrance Mitchell, S A.J. Moore.
Dallas Cowboys Last year: The Cowboys were 12-6 and won the NFC East for the third time in quarterback Dak Prescott’s six seasons but again failed to go deep in the playoffs, losing a home wild-card game to San Francisco. The offense was one of the best in the NFL before Prescott strained a calf, and was inconsistent the rest of the way. NFL defensive rookie of the year Micah Parsons led a dramatic turnaround for a much-maligned unit.

Needs: With Watson traded to Cleveland, the Texans are focused on developing Mills but he’ll need to show that he’s made progress after a subpar rookie season. The Texans expect Stingley, the third overall pick in the draft, to step in immediately to improve their secondary.
