SPIRIT

Non-profits, volunteers lead the way in service to community By SHANE MONACO, TELEGRAM STAFF WRITER | Photo by NAN DICKSON

Local communities and organizations worked to help neighbors in times of need, especially over the past few years. Volunteers and ordinary residents have given money and time to victims of natural disasters and global pandemics. An example of this generous attitude towards others was seen in April, when hundreds came out to help in the aftermath of the EF-3 Cedar Valley tornado in the Salado area of southern Bell County. The tornado, which struck parts west of Salado, injured 23 people but fortunately did not cause any deaths. Many residents came out to help those affected, donating their time, equipment or money for cleanup and rebuilding efforts. Online fundraisers for local families and churches raised more than $100,000, with hundreds giving donations of various sizes. “Our community’s generosity has already been expressed and is greatly appreciated as we work to recover 6 | 2022 COMMUNITY GUIDE

from this whole event,” Bell County Judge David Blackburn said. The community also came together in other events, such as the recordbreaking cold spell in 2021 in which many people were without power in temperatures that reached 2 degrees.

Warm beds Local generosity doesn’t only extend to emergencies, with two Temple organizations working each winter to help those in need. The Salvation Army of Bell County’s Temple location and Temple Impact Church work together to provide warm beds for the local homeless population. The two entities have partnered for the past two years on making space when temperatures fall below freezing. Roy Rhodes, pastor at Impact

Church, told the Telegram in 2021 that the church relies on volunteers to help in its operations. While it is difficult to operate the shelter, Rhodes said he thought it was important. “But the costs of running a shelter are nothing compared to the difficulties faced by our friends who do not have safe and secure homes,” Rhodes said. “Impact is a church, so rather than seeing the warming shelter as a service we provide, we see it as a community working together and sharing the resources God has given us to extend gracious hospitality to those who need shelter.”

Food and clothing Other organizations in the community give back throughout year by helping to distribute food,

clothes and other essentials. Feed My Sheep is one of the organizations in Temple that provides this help, regularly distributing food to the homeless. Some volunteers even give up their holidays, such as Christmas and Thanksgiving, to give others a good meal. Mark Wilkui, who has volunteered at the organization for eight years, was one of the many distributing food on Thanksgiving last year. “I keep coming back to help those people that can’t cook for themselves,” he said. “I do a little bit of everything here — serving, greeting, etc. We offer a place where they can stay out of the weather and enjoy a hot meal. I will keep coming for as long as I can.” smonaco@tdtnews.com

Bell population growth fuels

economic boom BY SHANE MONACO, TELEGRAM STAFF WRITER The population and opportunities in Bell County have boomed in recent years, and it is not hard to see why. With the county’s access to Interstate 35, and its close proximity to Austin and Waco, the region has drawn interest from both national and global companies. Bell County’s population reached 370,647 in 2020, according to the U.S. Census — a 19.5 % increase since 2010. That population growth attracted new businesses, including technology firms. One company that recently decided to move to the area is technology company Meta Platforms Inc. — the parent company of Facebook, Instagram and other social media subsidiaries. The facility, which is expected to be operational by 2024, will be powered by 100% renewable energy.

SOLAR FARMS That energy could come from one of the many solar farms that have expressed interest in the region. In the past two years, the Bell County Commissioners Court has considered and approved multiple solar projects. These projects, mainly proposed in East Bell County, would bring millions of watts of power to the region. Solar projects approved by the commissioners included Engie North America’s $460 million Five Wells Solar Project. 10 | 2022 COMMUNITY GUIDE

The project, approved in May, is to be constructed in east Bell County and provide 320 megawatts of power generation and 288 megawatts of storage capacity. A megawatt is the same as 1 million watts of power, and is

able to power between 150 and 210 homes. Bell County Judge David Blackburn said in 2021 that residents in the county should expect to see more solar projects in the coming

years. “If you live near a substation or transmission lines, you can almost be assured, in my opinion, that over the next few years that you are going to get approached because that is the process right now,” Blackburn said.

The area’s growth, as well as shortages of construction supplies, has caused local home prices to rise each year. In April the Tax Appraisal District of Bell County reported that the

price of homes in the district rose by between 25% and 30% since 2021. Preliminary taxable values for local entities have also increased in 2022, with most seeing increases of 15% or more. This will mean more money for local entities in the future. Temple has seen a preliminary increase of 18.91%, from $6.6 billion to $7.8 billion, while Belton saw an 18.23% increase, from $1.5 billion to $1.8 billion. Killeen saw a similar increase as the other two cities, rising by 19.38%, from $7.7 billion to $9.2 billion. Temple Independent School District saw a 17.45% increase, from $5 billion to $5.9 billion, with Belton ISD rising by 24.37% and Killeen ISD up by 20.12%. Moody ISD rose by the most, going from $61.9 million to $86 million, a 38.91% increase. “Basically, our job is to mirror what is going on in the real estate market,” Chief Appraiser Billy White said. “The market has just been tremendous this past year, in regards to what is going on with supply. That low amount of supply, and high demand, has pushed the prices up and our job is to value them at what we think their market value is as of Jan. 1.” smonaco@tdtnews.com 2022 COMMUNITY GUIDE |

CITY GROWTH

Temple, Belton and other Bell cities see thousands of new residents BY JOEL VALLEY, TELEGRAM STAFF WRITER • Photos by Nan Dickson

More than 60,000 new residents have moved to Temple, Belton and other Bell County cities over a decade from 2010 to 2020.

It’s not slowing down any time soon. The cities of Temple, Belton, Killeen and Harker Heights each saw its populations increase by at least 15% over the past decade. Temple increased by 24.2% from 66,102 to 82,073, Belton by 26.6% from 18,216 to 23,054, Killeen by 16.4% to 153,095, and Harker Heights by 19.3% from 26,700 to 33,097, according to census data. However, that growth did not occur evenly and forced some city councils to realign respective districts. 12 | 2022 COMMUNITY GUIDE

Although the maximum deviation between an entity’s highest- and lowest-populated districts should be 10% according to redistricting criteria, Gunnar Seaquist, an attorney with Bickerstaff Heath Delgado Acosta LLP, highlighted how the city of Temple’s deviation had registered around 54.2%. “So we had some rebalancing to do,” he said during a meeting in December. Yet redistricting was viewed by many elected officials as a routine procedure for a fast-growth region that is seeing a consistent influx of new residents and businesses. The county, already a military and distribution hub, is seeing more tech businesses arrive.

Meta, Facebook’s parent company, announced a $800 million data center campus in Temple’s industrial park. Another data center, for $225 million, will be built by Temple Data Green LLC will also build a $225 million data center on the city’s east side.

Businesses continue to grow in Temple and Belton. Temple saw an increase in its allocation of sales tax revenue for May rise to about $3.23 million, a 6.93% increase from last year. In Belton, the city also saw an increase in its sales tax allocation. Belton received $831,794 in revenue, a 12.99% rise over last year.

IT’S NOT SLOWING DOWN ANY TIME SOON. Belton growth, like that in neighboring communities, can be seen in the several actively building and planned subdivisions. Last April, Belton City Council approved an agreement for Bell County’s third municipal utility district. MUDs are taxing entities that provide basic utilities, such as water and sewer, to residents through a partnership with a nearby city, and are often used as a way to take on debt to fund the development of a subdivision’s infrastructure. This move stemmed from the Utley family of Dallas, who own 481 acres near the Lampasas River. They are opting to transform their land into a sprawling, riverfront subdivision with an estimated 1,775 homes that will be called River Farm Belton, and cited Belton’s recent multi-million dollar investments to extend wastewater lines as far as the Lampasas River for doing so. “The vision the city had to move forward with the design and the development of water and sewer in this area is quite visionary — especially given the lack of development the city has had on the south side of town,” developer Steve Utley said early in the process. “It prompted our thoughts — I’m sure it prompted other landowners and their thoughts.” jvalley@tdtnews.com 2022 COMMUNITY GUIDE |

Temple attracts businesses as Meta, other companies chose Bell County By ERIC E. GARCIA, TELEGRAM CITY EDITOR

A

drian Cannady, president and CEO of the Temple Economic Development Corp., says his phone has been ringing constantly since Meta announced in March plans to build an $800 million data center in Temple.

Bobby Ott, superintendent of the Temple Independent School District, said officials look forward to working with Meta to enhance Temple High School’s Career and Technical Education component, he said.

The reason? Temple is an economic development hotspot.

“We look forward to exploring new career pathways that will meet these newer occupational demands,” Ott said. “Our goal is to give our students a viable option to remain here after graduation — receiving great wages, pursuing degrees, and giving back to the community of Temple.”

Temple Mayor Tim Davis said the pace of Temple’s growth is increasing, given its location by Interstate 35. “We are no longer a pass-through community along I-35,” Davis said. “Temple is a destination for families looking for economic and educational opportunities. Meta knows that an educated workforce is the key to their continued growth and success. Meta has a track record of partnering with local school districts to provide innovative opportunities for our students.” 14 | 2022 COMMUNITY GUIDE

Analysts project that the district could receive about $50 million in new tax revenue from Meta over a 15-year period. “Adding Meta to our commercial tax base helps our taxpayers tremendously,” Ott said. “Temple ISD already boasts the lowest tax rate among peer

districts, but now with this announcement, we can continue minimizing tax impact while preparing for growth.” Rod Henry, president and CEO of the Temple Chamber of Commerce, said the company’s center in Temple will help attract other businesses. “We are the destination community of Central Texas — and this points to that,” Henry said.

Cannady said the data center is expected to receive 75% tax abatements from the city and Bell County for a 10-year period. The center could also receive a 50%

tax abatement from Temple College for 10 years. Government bodies are required to approve each agreement. Meta will pay considerable taxes, even with the abatements, Cannady said. A proposed tax abatement agreement states that Meta must invest at least $800 million for phase 1, which is required to commence construction no later than two years from the effective agreement date. Additionally, Meta must create and maintain at least 40 new full-time jobs. Meta may develop the project in phases over a period of years. If that occurs, Meta would be eligible for separate abatements each subsequent phase.

Green Data A second data center also was approved for the Synergy Park. Land for Temple Green Data LLC was unanimously approved for rezoning, alongside an economic development agreement with the company. The company is expected to invest at least $225 million in the construction of the project. The 33-acre tract set aside for the new data center is a portion of a larger 161.87-acre tract approved for rezoning from agriculture to light industrial. The data center will be on Temple’s southeast side in 16 | 2022 COMMUNITY GUIDE

Synergy Park. The data center will be located at 2810 Bob White Road, in the city’s Synergy industrial park, which also contains the Temple 1 power plant. “We are thrilled to have Rowan Green Data expanding to Temple,” Cannady said. “Rowan is a welcome addition to our emerging technology sector.”

Housing developments Other industries are thriving as well. Housing developments are underway across Temple and Belton as new residents snatch up properties. Taxable values for properties in Bell County have increased by 19.61% since 2021, from more than $24.41 billion last year to a preliminary estimate of $29.2 billion this year. Local school districts also saw large increases in taxable values. Belton ISD saw an increase of 24.37% while Temple ISD an increase of 17.45%. BISD values rose from $4.78 billion in 2021 to $5.94 billion in 2022 while values in the Temple school district grew from $5.08 billion last year to a preliminary $5.96 billion this year. eegarcia@tdtnews.com

Belton, Temple, Salado schools see growth BY JOEL VALLEY, TELEGRAM STAFF WRITER

T

he Belton Independent School District has a bragging right that not many school districts in Texas can claim. Its population growth was not stunted by the COVID-19 pandemic. During a Belton ISD school board meeting last April, Bob Templeton, a demographer with Zonda, discussed how Bell County has continued to see a high volume of new-home construction. “I don’t really see anything changing that,” he said. “This region is seeing some very strong growth opportunities because of its location to Austin and to (Dallas-Fort Worth). ”Templeton expects the Temple-Belton area to be an economic engine and population magnet for the foreseeable future. He highlighted how the total population served within Belton ISD’s boundaries — which includes West Temple — has grown by 40% since 2010 to 64,417. “The below-19 population is up about 26%, median household income is up about 28% and the number of households within the district has grown about 39% … so overall we’re seeing very strong population growth,” he said. “We have 46 actively build-

18 | 2022 COMMUNITY GUIDE

ing subdivisions and 13 future subdivisions that we’re tracking.” These future homes are expected to bring Belton ISD’s total enrollment, which is currently 13,354, to 16,645 for the 2025-26 school year — growth that is leading to the construction of two new elementary schools in the district. Temple ISD expands Temple ISD, meanwhile, is expected to serve more than 9,700 students by the 2025-26 school year as more than 6,900 future housing lots are planned within its boundaries, according to the district’s most recent demographics report completed. In March 2021, Templeton, who assists many school districts in Central with enrollment projections, emphasized how 600 new homes could be coming into Temple ISD annually in about five years — projects that would impact zoning for Raye-Allen Elementary and Kennedy-Powell Elementary the most. Temple ISD, like its southern neighbors in Belton ISD, has plans for a new elementary school. “Thornton Elementary is full. Raye-Allen Elementary is full,” Temple ISD Superintendent Bobby Ott said during a citizen advisory committee meeting last

summer. “We have not added a new school in TISD … which is why this is so exciting ... since the late ’90s,” Ott said. “We don’t want kids in portables anymore.” Salado ISD growth Although Salado ISD’s last demographics report was conducted in 2017, Superintendent Michael Novotny told the Telegram in 2021 how its projections have remained mostly accurate. “It’s been a few years, but we used Templeton Demographics. It did a 10-year enrollment projection,” he said. “Up until (the 2020-21 school year) we’ve always been real close to or even a little bit ahead of those projections.” However, Novotny anticipates that enrollment figures in Salado ISD — which were last projected to reach 2,308 students in 202223 — to be on the rise again and it is close. The district serves 2,242 students, according to student enrollment data obtained from the Texas Education Agency. “I do think that we’ll see that growth again. We’re seeing more and more housing developments,” he said. jvalley@tdtnews.com

Private Schools provide Christian-based education By JOEL VALLEY, TELEGRAM STAFF WRITER

M

any private schools in Bell County have continued their dedication to providing their students a Christian-based education — a mission that is present at Holy Trinity Catholic High School in Temple, Central Texas Christian School in Temple, St. Mary’s Catholic School in Temple and Providence Preparatory School in Belton.

and content into their classrooms,” Renee Morales, St. Mary’s Catholic School’s director development, said.

Morales said parents can learn more about what exactly a classical education entails online at bit.ly/3fi2F5V.

Although St. Mary’s Catholic School placed an emphasis on deeper faith integration, history and language arts this past year, the transition has plans to target age-appropriate teaching methods and original sources.

Providence Preparatory

St. Mary’s Catholic School

“Modern education is almost totally based on textbooks,” Morales said. “(With original sources), students will read original sources, not just interpretations through textbooks. For example, rather than reading about the Declaration of Independence, or the Constitution, they will read and study the actual documents.”

Last fall, St. Mary’s Catholic School, 1019 S. Seventh St., strengthened that commitment when it began a transition to a “Catholic classical education.” “Classical education will be phased in over several years, as teachers introduce the methods

20 | 2022 COMMUNITY GUIDE

In Belton, Providence Preparatory School, 506 N. Main St., has already implemented a classical education approach in its classrooms. “We approach learning from a sense of wonder,” Providence Preparatory School said in a statement posted to its website. “We are amazed by God’s saving kindness to us, and by his glory that we see in all of life. All staff and board members affirm a view of life that is awe-inspired, historically Christian, and broadly evangelical.”

Holy Trinity Like their Belton neighbors, Holy Trinity Catholic High School — 6608 W. Adams Ave. in West Temple — strives to form Christian leaders. “Each student is seen as a gift from God and the future of our Christian community,” Holy Trinity Catholic High School, which gathers for a prayer service or Mass every day of the week, said. “As stewards of these gifts, we feel it is our obligation to provide sound spiritual formation, as well as moral, academic and physical education of the highest quality.” The school aims to help students grow in their community through their love for Jesus Christ. “Students are provided with experiences and opportunities that mold their moral make-up,” according to Holy Trinity. “Moral decision making is a major component of school life in general, with most classes and clubs incorporating issues of the day such as poverty, abortion, politics, etc.”

Central Texas Christian Curriculum at the Central Texas Christian School, meanwhile, follows seven core values: Godly integrity, prayerful decision making, adherence to the authority of God’s word, relationships based on unconditional love, Christ-centered curriculum, academic excellence and Christ-like servanthood. “The mission of Central Texas Christian School is to educate students with the Transforming Truth of Christ, inspiring academic excellence, Godly character and integrity in life pursuits,” CTCS said on its website. “The programs, courses and instructional strategies are selected and implemented in a way that provides for the attainment of knowledge, wisdom, application and skills, inspiring a desire for even greater discovery.” jvalley@tdtnews.com

UMHB, Temple College to expand with new facilities By JOEL VALLEY, TELEGRAM STAFF WRITER

Serving our future teachers is one of many areas the University of Mary Hardin-Baylor plans to be expanding upon. Temple College should be growing plenty of future servants too, with bond funding helping it add to the health care workers it already provides the area. UMHB will be home to the Marek-Smith Center for Teacher Preparation, a $6-million state-of-the-art facility, in the fall of 2023. This 11,000-square-foot facility — funded in part by a $1 million donation from CEFCO Convenience Stores and parent company Fikes Wholesale Inc. — will be dedicated to special education training and instruction, according to UMHB. “UMHB believes college students need experience within the safety of a UMHB facility, with their instructors present to guide them, as they learn the intricacies of teaching students with disabilities,” Joan Berry, the dean of the College of Education at UMHB, said. “This new facility is a game-changer 22 | 2022 COMMUNITY GUIDE

for UMHB. It will allow both general education and special education majors to connect what they are doing in the classroom with what they experience working directly with students from the community.” Kris Ward, coordinator for UMHB’s special education programs, added how this space at the corner of 11th Avenue and Pearl Street will allow the university to better serve the academic, social and sensory needs of K-12 students in the Central Texas community. “I traveled the country researching special education best practices, and saw various equipment and technology we will bring into our new facility,” she said. “During the site visits, I experienced an immersion room and knew that our students would greatly benefit from this state-ofthe-art technology. We will have different sensory rooms to address various needs of children with disabilities, including the High Impact Zone and the Multisensory Room.”

Temple College also is actively undergoing a facelift after securing $124.9 million in bond funding last year — an issue that saw Temple residents vote in favor of during the May 1, 2021, election. Major bond projects include expansion and renovation of the Health Sciences Center, and construction of a new Temple College Main Building, construction of a new Campus Services Center and construction of a new Visual Arts Center. “Temple College is committed to addressing the shortage in health care workers by increasing the capacity of health care training programs, including doubling the size of the college’s nursing program,” Ellen Davis, a Temple College spokeswoman, said. “Currently, because of the growth, nursing and some of the other health care programs are housed in temporary spaces.” The Temple College main building would feature a University Center, Workforce Training Center and Student Support Services. “This … will house all student services in one

convenient location, and the building will include a ‘University Center’ where four-year universities could offer bachelor’s and master’s degree programs on the Temple College campus,” Davis said. “It also will include an innovative Workforce Development Center that will serve as an economic driver for the region by providing high wage, in-demand workforce programs.” These improvements are expected to be completed by Temple College’s 100th anniversary in 2025. Bob Browder, the 2022 chair of the Temple College board of trustees, is excited for what is to come. “These campus advancements would represent an important milestone in Temple College’s history of being trusted for generations and building for the future,” he said. “Today’s students are being prepared for the global and high-tech workplace, and they need appropriate classroom technology. This … would give students the 21st-century technology and tools they need.” jvalley@tdtnews.com

Sharing a partnership with its community Sue Mayborn

President, Editor and Publisher

The Temple Daily Telegram, a Texas “Newsroom of the Year.” The Temple Daily Telegram is a committed partner to its readers, its advertisers and its community. As evidence of this commitment look no further than the recent statewide awards in which The Telegram received 11 statewide journalism awards and was named a Texas “Newsroom of the Year” by the Texas Association of Managing Editors. “We have a strong commitment to the communities we serve,” said Sue Mayborn, the Telegram’s Editor and Publisher. “We work daily to bring you the news that is important to your daily lives. It is our job to present the information

to you fairly and accurately.” Local officials and civic leaders appreciate the role the newspaper plays as it strives to cover the news in Temple, Belton and the surrounding area with a comprehensive report in print and online. More often than not, the Telegram is the only news media present for city council meetings, school board meetings, Temple College trustee meetings, county commissioners meetings, high school games and other events. The Telegram has expanded regional coverage through FME

News Service – a joint initiative with the Killeen Daily Herald. Combined, the two newspapers have the region’s largest news gathering operation. The newspapers also collaborate to publish Tex Appeal Magazine. The bi-monthly publication is distributed in each newspaper and also is available at dozens of Bell County locations. The Telegram print edition reaches a large audience that includes an estimated readership of 23,000 daily and 26,000 on Sunday. The Telegram continues to invest in its website. The Telegram’s website, tdtnews.com, received over 9 million page views last year. It features local news, sports and entertainment along with an electronic version of the print edition and more than 240,000 archived articles and photos available to subscribers. The site was recognized as the “Online Newspaper of the Year” two years in a row by the Texas Associated Press Managing Editors.

The Telegram’s news app gives users instant access to the website as well as breaking news alerts from their phone, tablet or mobile device. The app can be downloaded for free at the Apple App Store or Google Play. The Telegram and Herald launched JobsCentralTexas.com, a locally based employment site designed to connect job seekers and employers. The Telegram also operates CentralTexasTickets. com, which helps local organizations promote and sell tickets to their events. The site has generated over 22,000 ticket sales and more than $300,000 for local entities since its launch in 2019. The Telegram has produced the Fort Hood Sentinel via a contract with the U.S. Army for more than 70 years. The weekly newspaper is distributed to all onpost housing and hundreds of newsstands across the region. “We feel strongly as a locally owned newspaper that we are in a position to better serve our communities and take an active role in supporting projects and programs that make Central Texas a great place to live,” Mrs. Mayborn said.

Lt. Gen. Paul E. Funk II speaks during the 34th annual Military Appreciation Luncheon presented by the Temple Chamber of Commerce and American Legion Post No. 133 at the Frank W. Mayborn Civic & Convention Center in Temple.

Annual Temple event honors service members, others BY CHRISTIAN BETANCOURT, TELEGRAM STAFF WRITER • Photos by Michael Miller/Telegram The Temple Chamber of Commerce continues the tradition started by the late Frank W. Mayborn, former owner and publisher of the Telegram, in 1985 to honor military members during an appreciation luncheon every fall. Rod Henry, CEO and president of the chamber, said the event is done because it is the right thing to do, among other reasons. “Fort Hood happened in Central Texas due to the leadership of the Temple Chamber’s Economic Development Committee led by Mayborn,” Henry said. “The initial Camp Hood was established 34 | 2022 COMMUNITY GUIDE

in Temple while the site in west Bell County was being prepared. Our economy is linked to Fort Hood in many ways. Most of the greater Temple community has some connection to Fort Hood, to the armed forces.” What began as a salute to Fort Hood soldiers and the 36th Sustainment Brigade of the Texas Army National Guard grew to include World War II and Vietnam War veterans as special guests. Since 2016, the Temple Chamber has recognized more than 440 veterans who served during

the Vietnam War era. The typical banquet luncheon at the Frank W. Mayborn Civic and Convention Center includes the presentation of the colors, a patriotic salute, a message from a military and military-related leader, presentation of the Vietnam Era Commemoration Pins, and music from local high schools and local JROTC. From 2016 through 2019, a police and fire department escort for veterans from the William R. Courtney Texas State Veteran’s Home to the banquet was organized.

THOSE WHO ARE IN THE SERVICE ARE

WORTHY OF BEING SERVED. “This was a very moving tribute to veterans,” Henry said. “In fact, the two schools on North Third Street had students along the road waving flags as the parade moved by.” In 2020 and 2021, due to the pandemic, the banquet was transformed into a drive-through event where lunchboxes were given to veterans. Thousands of boxes were given out during those two events. It was then that first responders were added to the salute to be honored as well.“Through this initiative, our community through

the Temple Chamber is able to honor the past, salute the present and encourage the future,” Henry said. “(The 2022 banquet) will be the first formal luncheon at Frank W. Mayborn Civic and Convention Center, where we include another group of honored guests, first responders. With everything we have been through the past two years, it is altogether fitting and appropriate to utilize this venue to express our appreciation and salute them for their service to all of us.” cbetancourt@tdtnews.com

Hike Bike

Options abound in Bell County

Central Texans who like to hike or bike have dozens of options in Bell County. Twenty-three of Temple’s parks have trails, including short loops and longer paths for extended trips. The FM 2305 trail extends along five miles along West Adams Avenue in West Temple and connects to the Pepper Creek Trail. The Pepper Creek Hike and Bike Trail extends three miles from West Adams to the Temple Industrial Park. Friar’s Creek Hike and Bike Trail No. 1 goes 3.65 miles through south central Temple. Belton has several popular trails as well. In downtown Belton, the Nolan Creek Hike and Bike Trail winds through a scenic creek area to the University of Mary Hardin-Baylor, a 1.26-mile pathway that includes 10 educational stops and travels through Liberty, Harris Community and Yettie Polk parks. The Chisholm Trail Park behind Belton High School features a .79-mile walking 36 | 2022 COMMUNITY GUIDE

loop. Miller Springs Nature Center, a 260-acre preserve operated by the cities of Temple and Belton, is located on FM 2271, east of the Belton Dam. The center is open year-round. There are several light to moderate trails at the nature center, which offers scenic bluffs, small caves and streams. Bird watching is popular at the site. Central Texas Master Naturalists have recently finished the reroute of a trail to the center’s Green Pond to connect with the Tennessee Valley Trail to the area. The rerouted trail “still offers views of the string and the area above the waterfall,” the group posted on social media. “The bridge was moved 30 feet upstream and the trail now connects to a newly clear area by Kiosk No. 3. Try it out.” The center connects with Belton’s Miller Park, which includes picnic areas. The site, accessible from FM 439/Lake Road, is popular with locals who like to fish on the Leon River below the dam. Chalk Ridge Falls Park, 5600 FM 1670

below the Stillhouse Hollow Lake dam near Belton, is a popular outdoor spot open year-round with rocky bluffs, small caves and clear streams that parkgoers wade into during warm weather. The park’s signature feature is a scenic waterfall. There is also a small suspension bridge over the river. Dana Park Peak, 3800 Comanche Gap Road in Harker Heights, a 600-acre park features an extended 6.8 mile trail loop that overlooks Stillhouse Hollow Lake. The park has six different trails, each with its own level of difficulty. Guidelines for the park are set by the International Mountain Bicycling Association and can be found on the trail board near the starting point. Visitors are recommended to stay on trails. Hiking is also popular at Texas A&M University-Central Texas, where the public can use the campus trail that goes through acres of woodsy tracts.

ne of the Temple’s greatest strengths is the medical hub that includes a Veterans Administration hospital, a medical school, nursing programs and Baylor Scott & White Health facilities that serve the health care needs of both area residents and people who come here for the quality care. Temple is home to two major hospitals from the Baylor Scott & White group, one for adults and another specializing in children. Baylor Scott & White Medical Center-Temple, 2401 S. 31st St., is a 640-bed medical center in Temple and the only Level I trauma center between Dallas and Austin. affairs in the U.S. House of Representatives for 18 years. A 120-bed nursing home care unit opened in 1981, and 1986 saw the completion of a $25 million clinical expansion project. Baylor College of Medicine Baylor College of Medicine’s Temple campus will open its doors in July 2023 with an inaugural class of 40 medical students, Dr. Paul Klotman, president of the Houston-based medical school, said. Baylor’s new campus will replace Texas A&M University’s medical school in Temple, which is increasing its presence in Dallas and Houston. The nursing programs at Temple College have earned a reputation for excellence in the Central Texas health care community and throughout the state through its Associate Nursing Degree and Vocational Nursing programs. In addition, the University of Mary Hardin-Baylor offers a bachelor’s degree in nursing. The program prepares students to excel on the license exam: in the 2017-18 academic year, for example, the firsttime pass rate for UMHB nursing graduates was 95.8%. Other facilities in the area include Seaton Medical Center, 850 W. Central Texas Expressway in Harker Heights. Seaton is an 83-bed acute care hospital that opened in 2012. Also nearby is AdventHealth Central Texas, a 220plus bed medical center at 2201 S. Clear Creek Road in Killeen, and the Carl R. Darnall Army Medical Center, a 947,000-square-foot facility that opened in 2016 on Fort Hood and includes primary and emergency care. cbetancourt@tdtnews.com

Athletics

a tradition in Temple, Belton BY JOSHUA WEAVER, TELEGRAM STAFF WRITER

S

ports have long been engrained into the lifestyles of many in Temple and Belton. Two tradition-rich towns considered small, but big on talent through the decades. Over the last two years, in fact, two locals were selected in the NFL draft — Temple High grad Ta’Quon Graham was picked out of the University of Texas by the Atlanta Falcons in 2021 and Belton High’s Logan Hall (University of Houston) was chosen by the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in April of this year. But sports don’t just thrive because of the standouts and stars. Coaches, volunteers and fans alike contribute to the community-driven past time. Evidence of that can be found among recent dedications at local facilities, honoring those who have impacted youth, schools and more through years of service. In February this year, the soccer complex at Crossroads Park in West Temple was named for Peter den Harder, a former player, coach and referee and an integral piece in providing access to the sport who died in August 2020. “He participated in every aspect of (soccer locally), and, many times, multiple aspects simultaneously,” Dr. Ference Korompai — another influential figure in local

Jace Jefferson Memorial Batting Cages, a lasting tribute of the former Belton ISD student-athlete who died in 2016 of glioblastoma brain cancer. Many other fields and venues around Temple, Belton and Bell County as a whole, also are constant reminders of dedicated individuals, who strived to allow others a slice of success. At Temple High, Wildcat Stadium’s field dons in big, bold

letters “Bob McQueen Field” in honor of the Wildcats’ legendary football coach. Across the way, the Tem-Cats’ softball field is dedicated to Mildred “Lanky” Lancaster. And so on. The annual track and field meet hosted by Belton ISD is now the Denise Petter Big Red Relays. NFL Hall of Famer and Temple native “Mean” Joe Greene has a football field in East Temple bearing his name.

There are others and likely more to follow — think something at the University of Mary Hardin-Baylor involving football architect and head coach Pete Fredenburg, who led the Crusaders for all of their 24 years of playing and retired in January, about a month after winning the NCAA Division III national championship. After all, sports always have and always will be the tie that binds the past to the present.

BELTON COACHING LEGEND HONORED Former Belton High School baseball coach David Tidwell, left, greets Travis Owens, who was a member of his 1999 team, before the Tigers’ varsity baseball game against District 12-6A opponent Bryan. Prior to the game, the school officially unveiled the new name of its baseball diamond as Tidwell Field. Tidwell, a 2017 Texas High School Baseball Coaches Association Hall of Fame inductee, led Belton’s baseball program for 23 years (1985-2008) and racked up 491 wins and the 1994 Class 4A state championship along the way. tragedies. Just recently, the new Church of the Visitation in Westphalia has taken shape, rising from the ashes of a fire that destroyed a 124-year-old wooden church on July 29, 2019. The new building will seat 440 people. While the church was being rebuilt, worshippers continued at the Westphalia Parish Hall. “I am so excited seeing the new

church being constructed,” parishioner Nancy Doskocil said. Some First Baptist Church of Temple worshippers can relate, as the church moved to a new location and rebuilt after a January 2010 fire destroyed its sanctuary. Other ways churches are building include Vacation Bible School, which is getting back to full participation in a myriad of locations

during the summer of 2022 after COVID-19 concerns limited or canceled some normal activities. LifeWay Research out of Nashville, Tenn., conducted a survey that revealed even if parents do not attend church themselves, they will often send their children to Vacation Bible School. The study noted that parents shared positive feedback about their Vacation Bible School experiences.

people in war-torn Ukraine and other areas that haven’t received as much attention. Temple Bible Church has a sister church in Ukraine, along with some satellite locations that local church members are trying to help during the war.

Structures within the new district, highlighted by city staff, included Eighth Street Baptist Church, Corinth Baptist Church, Wayman Chapel AME Church, the Wheatley Alternative Education Center and a historic building at 311 S. MLK Jr. Drive.

Among the activities provided by local worshippers include Churches Touching Lives for Christ, which distributes food, clothing and other items to people in need. Feed My Sheep, also in downtown Temple, provides meals daily for the homeless and low-income population. The Salvation Army of Bell County — which many people don’t realize is a church — has shelters for women and men trying to rebuild their lives and also provides warming shelters during freezing nights. Love of Christ Food Pantry, which celebrated its 30th year of helping local people in December 2021, distributes food and clothing on Wednesdays and Thursdays. The organization also helps with money management, Medicare/Medicaid and health information, and senior citizen programs. Bell County religious-based organizations also have missionary efforts across the globe, with Belton-based Hope for the Hungry providing food and schooling for children in places including Haiti. They also have related efforts here at home. Among the efforts here have included Temple City Council recognition of local historically black churches with an African American Churches Historic District, an area with about 100 properties near downtown Temple. Borders for the city’s second historic district include Martin Luther King Jr. Drive to the west, Avenue A to the north, Avenue E to the south and the train tracks to the east.

“There is a journey that each one of us must take,” long-time Eighth Street Baptist preacher Roscoe Harrison, who died in February of 2022, wrote in a “Pastor’s Corner” published in the Telegram. “It is a journey with only two directions. One direction leads to God and the other direction leads to the pursuit of self interest or selfishness.” He went on to say, “A journey without God breeds a sense of non-fulfillment and disappointment, no matter what you aspire to achieve. But a journey with God opens up the windows of Heaven and rewarding opportunity.” One opportunity area residents
