Old Jody’s Restaurant

It’s been 60 years since the first burger was flipped at Jody’s Restaurant — now known as Old Jody’s.

It’s the sole survivor of Temple’s burger era, a time when big-league burgers were served up at places like Chuck Wagon, the French Quarter, Charcoal Inn and Where It’s At.

Those places are long gone — Jody’s is going strong.

“My family opened this place in 1963 and I’ve had it for the past 40 years,” said Joey Franks. “It was originally a little fast-food stand but we turned it into a restaurant.”

“We started with burgers and fries, and those are still our most popular menu items,” Franks said. “But we also serve a ton of seafood — catfish, oysters and shrimp, all hand-breaded and deep fried.”

“We also are known for our salads. We made a chef salad with grilled chicken for the health conscious, and we use fried chicken for those who aren’t.”

So what makes Jody’s burgers so good?

“Just good, fresh meat,” Franks said with a grin. “We get fresh meat every other day — it’s never frozen, and that makes a difference. We’ve used the same meat company since the start.”

“I’m always adding things, both to the menu and to the building,” he said. “Over the years we added seafood and Frito pie. It’s very popular as well.”

In late 2022, Old Jody’s added an outdoor patio and frequently hosts live music.

“I’m trying to do the music during the week,” he said. “Musicians are busy on weekends. I’m planning on eventually having live music every Wednesday and Thursday, but right now it’s kind of random. We’ll see how it goes.”
