Spray Roses are tiny roses that come three to five blooms per stem and come in almost any color. They are commonly used in wedding and everyday florals as they are available year round. Lemon Leaf is a nice, kelly green color—a pretty choice perfect for any budget and available year round. While we’ve used it sparingly in this bouquet, more greenery can help save money on wedding flowers. Dahlias are another seasonal favorite and burgundy blooms in this bouquet are sure to make a statement. They also come in blush and cream, yellow and orange, white and a cool variety of other shades and are in season May-November. Astilbe is lovely and adds beautiful texture to any bouquet or arrangement. It comes in blush, ivory and deep red and is available April through January. Peonies are everyone’s favorite and sure to impress. The large white flower features fluffy, soft petals and has the most amazing scent. Peonies come in a wide variety of colors and are guaranteed to be available late April through June and mid October through January. Sweet Pea is a soft, delicate flower shown here in blush with a fragrant smell. They have shorter stems and tend to be more fragile and are available in blush, lavender and white from March through August. Lisianthus are a classic favorite characterized by delicate flowers with soft petals. They are available in a white, soft pink, purple and lilac and are in season year round. Silver Dollar Eucalyptus is in high demand for 2016 and 2017 weddings. It is the favorite greenery amongst brides across the country and gives an organic, rich feel to any arrangement. Normally available year round, with high demand, availability varies in order to maintain quality. Shimmer Roses are a new variety of peach rose characterized by large head with a high petal count for a standard rose. You’ll be happy to find that this variety is available year round. continued 10

Brenda Lanig, of Brenda Lanig PhotoART, has noticed an increasing number of brides and grooms who are breaking the traditional rules of weddings in favor of personalizing their wedding day and engagement sessions to tell their unique story. “They’re able to say, ‘This is who I am,’” Lanig said. “A good wedding planner can help carry them in that direction and a good photographer can encourage them to bring things like décor or props we can use in pictures.” The ways to show your individuality are endless. recounted a recent engagement shoot where a Texas dirt track racing duo brought their helmets and a giant black and white checkered flag to tell their story. A dirt road helped set the scene. At a different engagement session where the groom was a member of a Christian punk rock band, Lanig encouraged him to rock out with his guitar for the camera. Lanig also witnessed a bride on her wedding day who wore the class ring of her brother who had passed away. It allowed her to carry him with her on one of the biggest days of her life. Along with special touches like these, Lanig said couples can use their cake, flowers or include a salute to their alma mater at their wedding. Your photographer will use these elements, along with the subtle details of the day, to complete a story. “I am looking for energy, emotion, light, the highlights on her hair,” said Lanig. “I don’t know how to explain it, other than that it’s innate. You have to have a feel for it to be really good at capturing a story.” After the wedding Lanig will design an album so the memories can be preserved and passed on. Couples may opt to purchase wall art, too.

Before any of this can happen, couples must book their wedding day photographer. When doing this, Lanig strongly recommends investing in a professional, rather than trusting the job to a friend or family member. She said you want to hire someone with the kind of equipment that, from the back of a church sanctuary, can capture the intimate details of a groom nervously twirling the ring on the bride’s finger or giving her a sneaky little wink to calm her nerves. “When you’re looking at your budget, you want to equally distribute, or widely distribute your funds – for the venue, the alcohol, the food, and the things that make it a wonderful party and a wonderful reunion for everyone,” said Lanig. “Yet, you want to have something at the end for yourself, something to give you a synopsis of the day.” Lanig’s packages range in price from $1,500 to $3,500 and she recommends booking about nine months to a year in advance. Finding the right photographer for your wedding can take a lot of time and research. Each photographer has a unique style and storytelling ability. For Scott Darling, of Scott Darling Photography, telling the couple’s story begins with a connection between the couple and the photographer. Darling likes to first meet with a couple in person and talk to them about how they met and what they are looking for in a photographer. This allows the photographer and the couple to determine whether they are the right fit for each other. Darling has found the engagement session to be a great tool in getting a couple comfortable in front of the lens so they can learn to be themselves and let their personalities show through both the engagement and wedding photos. “For the couple, it’s a good way to see how the photographer works and to get to know the photographer, as well,” said Darling. The engagement sessions have played such a big part in improving the connection between the photographer and the couple that, as of the past six months, Darling has started to include an engagement

session in all of his wedding photography packages. Before capturing the wedding day, Darling will ask his clients whether there are any important pictures they would like to have. Perhaps a bride is wearing her grandmother’s ring or has incorporated an old family heirloom into her dress or the décor – a wedding photographer will need to know about these elements to include them in the story. A first look can also provide a special time for a bride and groom to relax and show their true selves in their photos. “It’s a lot more intimate, so they can really talk,” Darling said. “He can look at the dress, he can get a better look. There are a lot of emotions with that, as well.” Darling said the first look is becoming more common and people are becoming more familiar with it as they let go of the superstition that a groom should never see a bride before she walks down the aisle. When Darling arranges a first look, he finds a quiet, intimate location for the bride and groom to be alone. The photographer and videographer, if one was hired, will stand away from the couple, capturing the

moment they first see each other on their wedding day. Once the wedding is over, the couple can look forward to seeing all the images telling the story of their day. Recently, Darling said he observed many brides opting to keep only digital copies of their photos, but he sees them moving away from that now. “A lot of people are now starting to request prints, which is a good thing because now they can put these pictures on the wall, they can put them on their mantle,” said Darling. T
he wedding ring’s circular shape will forever be a symbol of unending love. But the style and appearance of today’s rings are everevolving. Wooden rings have become increasingly popular and Central Texas woodworker, James Austin Culpepper, has seen the trend first-hand. He said he has crafted about 100 wooden rings over the past two years. “I don’t see a lot of people

making them, so it’s pretty unique,” he said. “I like the way it’s customizable.” Culpepper runs his woodworking business out of his Bell County home, just north of Rogers, and does much of his business online. The process to create a ring typically takes anywhere from two weeks to a month depending on the design. It all begins with a bride or groom’s custom order. “If someone has something in mind and they can dream it up, I’ll figure out how to make it,” Culpepper said. Customers first work with Culpepper to determine the type of wood they want. He said he has worked with woods as unique as pink ivory and rosewood, to woods as familiar as local oak or pecan. “I order all kinds of exotic lumbers,” he said. “I can make lumber from trees locally, too. If you have a tree that fell down on your property or where you grew up and it’s meaningful, I can take a piece from that and make a ring out of that.” Customers may also choose to add metal to their wooden ring, such as gold, aluminum or titanium.
“I actually did a rosewood ring with titanium recently and that was one of the coolest ones, the way it turned out,” said Culpepper, as he talked about some of his most unusual projects. Next, the bride or groom must determine his or her ring size, which can be tricky. Wooden rings do not always fit in the same way as metal, so sizing is particularly important, Culpepper said. From there, Culpepper gets to work in his shop – creating a piece as individual as the bride or groom. “There are so many different ways I can make them,” he said. “I try to make them as thin as possible so they’re durable.” Working with a material like wood makes it easy for each ring to truly be oneof-a-kind, as each piece of wood will never be quite like another. But for couples set on matching rings, Culpepper said he is able to create rings that are nearly identical. The wood also offers a slightly different feel than that of a metal ring.
“It’s a lot lighter usually, especially for a man’s ring
because the wood doesn’t weigh as much,” Culpepper said. “It doesn’t shift around your finger as much.” While people may find these features attractive, Culpepper said people should know that with the rings’ uniqueness, comes a unique way to care for the jewelry. Culpepper does not recommend regularly wearing a wooden ring in the
water to swim, shower or wash dishes. However, Culpepper said he is able to repair scratches to the finish as well as long-term wear and tear. he Chapel at Caliber Oak is a hidden oasis nestled on 45 wooded acres deep in the heart of Salado. Getting there is its own adventure as you drive down the paved roads through neighborhoods before veering off onto a stone driveway that leads you through a portal in time that takes you back 100 years, and away from the 21st century. Enter the simple, white wooden structure and your are greeted with the hospitality of its owners, Rick and Denise Thomssen, who built the chapel to have a place of their own to celebrate their 25th wedding anniversary. From the entry hall filled with antique mirrors artistically displayed on walls created from reclaimed antique wood, to the cabinets in the kitchen that once held merchandise at one of Belton’s original hardware stores, ca. 1800, to the stained glass window in the great room of the chapel, Caliber Oak promises a wedding celebration that is anything but “cookie cutter.” Thomssen said the vintage appeal of the venue attracts brides of all ages who want to host their nuptials in a country setting. “We adapt every single wedding to fit the bride, almost anything she wants. This could be for a sit down or stand up reception,” Rick Thomssen said. “There are no cookie cutter weddings here. Weddings are specifically designed for the bride.” Thomssen said he and his wife Denise stay with the brides throughout the planning stages and final event. Brides can bring in their own vendors, or the Thomssens will recommend trusted vendors they’ve worked with in the past. The venue is available for special events, other than weddings, and it hosts many fundraisers for local organizations; however, Thomssen said weddings are 90 percent of their functions. The Chapel at Caliber Oak is a flexible, full service venue. Brides can
choose to have their ceremony outdoors, with the party in the chapel or their ceremony in the chapel and the party outdoors. The chapel can seat up to 100 guests for the ceremony then be converted to a reception room; and 175 guests for outdoor weddings.
