36th Military & First Responder Salute

The traditional components of the Military Appreciation Luncheon such as the presentation and retirement of the Colors, National Anthem, Vietnam Era Veteran pinning, patriotic music, and messages of support are being recorded to create the virtual program. Also, videos have been requested from various partners to ensure an impactful virtual program sharing the message of how the partners have waged “war” against the pandemic. Community and military leaders have been asked to provide a short “shout-out” to recognize our honored guests for their engagement and leadership in the community.

BUSINESS

Celebrate the Flavors of Central Texas

Replacing the annual luncheon, the Chamber and HEB are planning LUNCH TO GO outside of the Santa Fe Business Center. Veteran organizations, food kitchens, shelters, and sponsors will have an opportunity to pre-order lunch for pick-up. The general public, including walk-ups, will be accommodated with LUNCH TO GO either using a drive-up process or to-go table. Video footage will be taken of LUNCH TO GO to include in the virtual presentation. The Temple Chamber of Commerce has proudly hosted a celebration of the military and veterans the past 35 years. Due to the pandemic, the 36th annual event was reimagined as a virtual salute to honor those on the front lines of the COVID-19 battle. This recognition will include the military (13th ESC/ Fort Hood, 1st Medical Brigade/Fort Hood, 36th Sustainment Brigade/TxANG), veterans, JROTC, law enforcement, fire & rescue, EMS, and medical/health care professionals.

The inaugural airing of the finished product will occur on Tuesday, November 10, on the Temple Chamber of Commerce YouTube channel. The overall video will be approximately 30-45 minutes in length. It will mix a message that is mindful of the struggles all have endured since early March, and the importance of the Greater Temple community bonding together to help our neighbors.

UNITY WITHIN COMMUNITY is the theme for the 36th Military & First Responder Salute.

This Program provides gap financing for businesses that have lost revenue as a result of social distancing and are at-risk of layoffs or closure.

Grants of up to $5,000 are available for businesses with up to 50 full-time equivalent employees at the time of application, or up to five full-time equivalent employees with a low to moderate income owner. The business must demonstrate a loss of gross revenue as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic to be considered for funding.

The application period has been extended for small businesses to receive COVID-19 relief funding. Applications will be accepted until funds have been exhausted. Applications will be accepted on a first-come, first-served basis.

Keep Temple Beautiful Recognized As Gold Star Affiliate

Tanya Gray, Keep Temple Beautiful Keep Texas Beautiful, a statewide grassroots environmental and community improvement organization, recently named Keep Temple Beautiful a Gold Star Affiliate, a designation conferred on, only the best of Keep Texas Beautiful’s affiliates. Gold Star recognition is the membership recognition’s highest status any community affiliate can achieve. Keep Temple Beautiful successfully implemented programs to clean up litter, reduce and recycle waste, educate local citizens, and beautify and enhance the local community. The programs were implemented locally in Temple, including electronic recycling, solid waste initiatives, environmental luncheons, and plantings throughout the city. Affiliates must also participate in Keep Texas Beautiful events, demonstrate community-wide support, and contribute to the sharing of best practices.

In 2004, Keep Texas Beautiful introduced the concept of Gold Star recognition to reward those communities who sought to go above and beyond the established requirements. To achieve this status, affiliates must also share information on their mission and goals, answer questions about their environmental, economic development and diversity and inclusion practices, or participate in the Keep Texas Beautiful Awards or Governor’s Community Achievement Awards programs, and provide a letter of support from their community. Keep Texas Beautiful formally recognized Gold Star communities during its 53rd annual conference on August 26 – which was the first virtual conference in the history of the organization.

Another First for 2020: Temple Health & Bioscience District Hosts First Ever Board Election

Temple Health & Bioscience District Formed in 2003, the Temple Health and Bioscience District (THBD) is the only district established in the entire state of Texas. The legislation that formed THBD also mandated that THBD be run by a seven-member board. As though 2020 were not already a record year, this will be the first time since its founding that THBD will hold a board election. All seven positions on the board are at-large and serve three-year staggered terms. The election that was originally scheduled for May 3, 2020, was postponed due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The election will now be held on November 3, 2020. Four of the six candidates are incumbent board members, while two individuals seek a first term. THBD’s mission is to grow twenty-first century jobs by fostering bioscience education, research, and healthcare in Central Texas. Sixteen years later that mission has been realized and continues to grow: seven active tenants utilize the lab space, offices, and networking connections with key collaborators in Temple and across the region. Additionally, THBD has helped three alumni companies graduate to the next steps in life science business development. The advancements in research and development taking place at THBD are made possible through community support and strong leadership. Under the guidance of Executive Director Tami Annable and a seven-member Board of Directors, THBD makes waves to develop the economic sector of the life sciences industry in Temple. In 2009, Temple voters gave THBD taxing authority. As a public entity, the taxpayers of Temple have an opportunity to voice their opinions by voting for the leadership of THBD. Learn about each of the candidates below, in the order they will appear on the ballot as determined by a drawing held at THBD in February 2020: Jason Locklin, Ph.D. has a strong background in biology. After receiving his Associate’s degree at Temple College, Dr, Locklin went on to earn his Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees in Aquatic Biology from Texas State University, and finally a Ph.D. in Biology from Baylor University. Dr. Locklin serves as Chair of the Biology Department at Temple College, and in 2019 led a group of students to explore the impact of invasive zebra mussels on Central Texas’ aquatic ecosystems. Tyler Johnson, City President of BBVA Compass, began serving on the THBD board in January 2020 when he was nominated to fill the seat left vacant by Doug Streater. Well-acquainted with the strides Temple, Texas is making to attract business developers, Tyler serves as Chair of the Reinvestment Zone Board.
