FOCUS ON

BUSINESS

Reflection on 2021 & Looking to 2022 Temple Chamber Staff As we continue to persevere through one of the most challenging and unprecedented periods of our history, we have to recognize our community and its businesses have not been immune and continue to work hard to recover. Compounding the pandemic, 2021 presented challenges with Winter Storm Uri, labor force, and continued supply chain disruptions.

JANUARY 2022 SALUTE TO BUSINESS Tuesday, January 25, 2022 5:30 - 8:30 pm

Mayborn Convention Center 3303 N. 3rd St. Temple, TX 76501 Tickets: https://bit.ly/Salute22 Deadline to register 1/18/2022

Throughout all of this, like our members and business community, this required the Temple Chamber to adapt. From seeking solutions to our member’s problems to reimagining events with safety as a top priority, all to help our community succeed and see businesses grow and thrive. Early in the pandemic, when the first waves threatened the survival of so many businesses, the Temple Chamber recognized that we had a vital role in helping our community through the crisis. Our focus has been and remains on providing as many resources as possible to support our region’s business community. The Temple Chamber collaborated with other entities in the creation of small business grant programs utilizing COVID-19 Community Relief Funds to retain jobs and stabilize local businesses. Almost $900,000 was granted in the combined efforts. Most importantly, we helped Temple area businesses navigate the grant applications to secure support. To protect the safety of business owners, their employees, and consumers, the Temple Chamber engaged with a program through the Texas Department of Emergency Management to provide free COVID-19 Rapid Testing Kits to local businesses. Since February 2021, we have distributed more than 2,900 free rapid tests to Temple area businesses.

With Winter Storm Uri, the Temple Chamber did not sit idle. We helped community partners share information about essential resources, and we used our strength as the voice of and for business to aid our members and community overcome obstacles presented by the storm.

The prime example of the Temple Chamber in service during the storm and the ripple effect caused is when roads were impassable and grocery store shelves empty, and hundreds of semi-trucks sat on Wendland Road waiting to deliver to our local distribution centers. A series of phone calls, in a 3-hour time frame, led to deploying TxDOT trucks and graders and the Temple Police Department to sand and grade the roads and control truck traffic.

The strength of the Temple Chamber is not any particular program or event, but rather comes from the network we have built over our 114-year history. We are the hub of a vast network that includes local businesses, all levels of government, state and national business associations, local organizations, schools, and more. This strength came to the forefront through the turmoil of both 2020 and 2021.

The Temple Chamber is a membership-driven organization where businesses pay dues to become members, and those members get plugged into the Chamber network. Despite the challenges in 2021, the Temple Chamber refused to be deterred by the setbacks. We safely held inperson events for members to make connections, hosted third house sessions to connect with our State Representative, held two job fairs with community partners, served over 3,000 hamburger meals to area first responders, active-duty military, veteran organizations, and the community for the 37th Annual Military & First Responder Salute, and ended the year over 1,000 members strong. The Temple Chamber of Commerce is filled with gratitude for our members and the community. Our efforts to support the business community would not be possible without the support of our members. 2021 has shown us that there is no better time to be a member of the Temple Chamber of Commerce. We have a vital role in our local community and are positioned to help preserve, protect, and promote a positive business environment in the greater Temple, TX area in 2022 and beyond. For those not already plugged into our network, we invite you to learn more about the Chamber on our website templechamber.com or by calling (254) 773-2105.

Make Giving Part of Your New Year’s Resolutions Tanya Gray, Keep Temple Beautiful Ah, a new year and new resolutions. Every year, this day brings with it a sense of excitement, anticipation, and hope as we look forward to the upcoming year.

mentor. Give a child the gift of someone who loves, encourages, and supports them this year to have an impact on their life.

Suddenly, everything that happened the year before—the things we did or didn’t do, did or didn’t say—doesn’t seem to matter as much. Instead, we can look ahead and see the new year, 2022 laid out before us, untarnished and ready for our next adventures in life.

Pay it forward. For a simple way to have a huge effect this upcoming year, pay it forward. Commit to taking small acts of kindness whenever you possibly can. For example, pay for a person’s coffee, leave a caring note or donate used goods. However you pay it forward, keep the message of positivity moving in 2022.

Of course, with New Year’s Eve come New Year’s resolutions. These resolutions symbolize the things we care about most in life and reflect the areas of life we want to improve. Whether it be weight loss, reading more, or simply trying something new, resolutions often mark what matters most to us. This means, if you want to make a difference in 2022, make giving a part of your New Year’s resolutions. Here are some ideas for how you can create resolutions that give back: Get your family on board. One simple way to make giving a part of your New Year’s resolutions is to get your family on board. Altruism is an incredibly important value to instill in young children. As you make plans for 2022, consider how you and your family can serve the community together. Share on social media. With today’s technology, social media often plays a critical role in the success of various fundraising and awareness efforts. This year, see how you can support organizations simply by sharing their posts on social media.

Volunteer consistently. If you want something to commit to doing next year, then consider volunteering consistently. Local and national nonprofit organizations like Keep Temple Beautiful are constantly looking for new people to get involved with their cause. Become a regular reliable volunteer. Commit to donating. Finally, make a difference in 2022 by finding a cause you care about and committing to donating regularly. While one-time donations are celebrated, regular donations can have a huge impact all-year-round. Find a monthly amount you feel comfortable with and commit to giving. So, if you want to have an even-greater impact this upcoming year, make giving a part of your resolutions. There are several ways to give to Keep Temple Beautiful: Sign up through the City of Temple’s water bill, write a check, volunteer your time, go online at www.keeptemplebeautiful.org and donate. Try out some of these ideas, or come up with your own to give back and make a valuable contribution to organizations that help make the world better.

Mentor a child. Speaking of support, you can many times find children in need of support in the community. One way you can support a child in 2022 is by volunteering to be a

January Marks the Celebration of National Mentoring Month Temple Chamber of Commerce Staff Launched in 2002 by MENTOR The National Mentoring Partnership (www. mentoring.org) and the Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health, National Mentoring Month is about driving systemic change to make mentoring an integral component of youth and workforce development efforts. Becoming a mentor can lead to unlimited opportunities: mentees can find a source of support from someone invested in their success; mentorships create long-lasting relationships; mentors impart positive values and instill a commitment to learning and betterment. Having a good mentor while you are developing your professional skills is a priceless gift, and all it takes is a little of your time. It is no secret that time is a valuable thing, and just a little bit of time spent giving advice or spreading your expertise to someone who needs it can make a huge impact. The beginning of a new year is a great time to get involved in a mentoring program either by volunteering your skills to a community organization or taking on a mentee within your own business. Getting involved in mentoring within your business or organization has been proven to help increase business profitability and longevity. Employees are one of the business’ greatest assets. As a leader, making yourself available to mentor your team can be a worthwhile investment in your business. Here are a few of the benefits of employee mentorship: 1. Employee Loyalty and Retention: creating an employee-based mentoring program shows your employees that you are invested in their growth and success. A study from Kent State University shows that employees who have been mentored by organization leaders tend to stay at their companies longer.

2. Develop Stronger Leaders: spending time mentoring employees prepares them to be the future leaders of your company.

3. Create Organizational Balance: working one-on-one with your employees gives you time to realize their strengths. This can help you better delegate your day-to-day workload into their capable hands while also demonstrating trust.

Businesses that invest in mentorship programs for the community also provide an invaluable resource for future leaders. According to The National Mentoring Partnership, young adults who have been mentored showed increased motivation to participate in team sports and extracurriculars, held a leadership position in a club or at school, showed increased motivation to get a college degree, and volunteered in the community at higher rates.

The survey also identified that one in three young people are without a mentor. Businesses can fill this need by volunteering to join local community mentorship programs. Here are a few local mentorship programs through Temple Chamber Members that business leaders can connect with: 1) Temple ISD Wildcat Mentors: www.TISD.org/WildcatMentors 2) The 411 House: the411house.org/help/#mentor 3) The Un-Included Club: www.unincluded.org/get_involved

Mentoring someone within your business or in the community can have a longlasting impact. A powerful tool that takes only a little of your time to strengthen our community.

Healthcare: Facing Challenges & Collaborating for the Well-Being of the Community Alfonzo James, Walmart DC #6083; Nanette Pace, 4 Legs of Love; Brian Stokes, Woodward Creative; & David Shine, Shine Richardson Group - LT Class of 2022 It is hard to describe the city of Temple without mentioning one type of infrastructure that most heavily contributes to the well-being of its citizens and economy – healthcare. The focus of the Leadership Temple healthcare day was gaining insight into the inner workings of the largest employer, Baylor Scott & White Health in Temple. Community leaders need to understand the magnitude of resources available, the challenges they face, how they collaborate with regional providers, and learn about opportunities that contribute to the well-being of the community. The class met with the Baylor Scott & White Health – Central Texas Region Leadership team for an enlightening briefing about the healthcare system and the challenges faced during the pandemic. The healthcare system in Temple features the only Level 2 Children’s Hospital between Austin and Dallas and accounts for one of 18 Level 1 trauma centers in Texas. The Temple system offers a complete continuum of care and innovative industry-leading procedures and care in cardiology, transplants, robotic surgeries, and more, attracting people to Temple from near and far – not only for patients but medical professionals as well.

is a challenge that required creative solutions and is something the leadership continues to work through. It was very enlightening to learn what was happening with our largest hospital system in Bell County and how this all affected the level of care that was available to our community. After the meeting with the Baylor Scott & White Health – Central Texas Region Leadership team, the class traveled to Canyon Creek Behavioral Health, Temple’s brand-new, state-of-the-art mental health facility. Canyon Creek Behavioral Health, in partnership with Baylor Scott & White Health, provides inpatient and outpatient treatment options for adolescent, adult, and geriatric patients facing issues with mental health. The hospital’s Director of Business Development gave the group a tour of the building highlighting its unique features while discussing the state of mental health in the community. The class ended the day learning from Central Counties Services and how they work in tandem with Baylor Scott & White Health in Temple and Canyon Creek Behavioral Health, to support individuals with mental illness or intellectual and developmental disabilities in their road to recovery and enhancement of their lives.

The pandemic presented unprecedented challenges for all, but arguably it impacted the healthcare industry most drastically. The Central Texas Region Leadership team had to change their entire operational model, essentially overnight, at the onset of the pandemic and is faced with keeping their practitioners and personnel healthy and safe, caring for the well-being of the community, all while managing variables such as supply chain, bed capacity, and workforce.

What struck many of the Leadership Temple class members was the prevalence of mental health challenges facing the community. Often, those with unaddressed mental health disorders struggle with poverty, addiction, or homelessness. Creating social and economic costs that impact healthcare, business, law enforcement, and the criminal justice system, and emergency and social services.

The class was given insight into the initial wave of COVID-19 cases in 2020, and the second large surge during summer 2021. Their nursing and medical personnel worked overtime, some clinics were closed and consolidated to bring practitioners to the hospital setting to care for patients, and contract personnel had to be brought in to give relief to the full-time staff. The overflow of patients being treated for this virus affected the entire hospital system, with the biggest impact hitting the ICUs and Emergency Departments. Bed capacity

Canyon Creek Behavioral Health and Central Counties Services are muchneeded and valuable resources for Temple in supporting our community’s wellbeing, yet there is an opportunity for more resources, public and private, to further address the growing need. The Leadership Temple class key takeaway from healthcare day was unmistakable: challenges and all, wellness is a top priority for the community of Temple.
