Ambassadors of the Temple Chamber Enter New Chapter

Temple Chamber Staff An ambassador is defined as an authorized representative, an official agent with a special mission, and a person who represents a particular organization, group of people, or brand.

The Temple Chamber is fortunate to have such individuals who serve as volunteers to help advance the cause of the Temple Chamber of Commerce and the greater Temple community. This group of volunteer members has existed and supported the organization for decades at business celebrations, events, and the Temple Christmas Parade. With the pandemic and fewer celebrations and events, the group was less involved in Chamber and community functions. This provided an opportunity to reimagine the group, and as activities are now picking up, the time was right to unveil a new look and begin a new chapter. Donning Temple Blue Blazers, the Ambassadors of the Temple Chamber ceremonially began their new chapter on May 20, 2022. This group was the first to cut the new blue ribbon with the new blue scissors, that with the blue blazers, complete the fresh new look. Serving as Chair of the Ambassadors of the Temple Chamber of Commerce for 2022 is Dave Hedge, General Manager of the Temple Daily Telegram. The Chamber staff liaison is Bobbie Jo King.

Temple Community Clinic: Building a Healthier Community

Temple Community Clinic

Rendering of the facade of the new Temple Community Clinic, located on S. 31st Street and Avenue J, courtesy of Pillar Architecture Studio. For 30 years, through the hearts of volunteers and the generosity of community supporters, the Temple Community Clinic has filled the gap in access to healthcare for Bell County. Although there have been changes, not EVERYONE can access the care they need. Even with the Affordable Care Act, many make too little to qualify for the subsidies and/or too much to qualify for Medicaid. Because of this, the compassion of Temple Community Clinic is as important as ever. Did you know… • Each patient Temple Community Clinic treats helps reduce hospital and ER trips and helps save time and money for our city and county. In 2021 alone, Temple Community Clinic’s services saved the community over $5.2 million. • Temple Community Clinic served over 1,300 patients in 2021 with 3,600 appointments and almost 11,000 patient encounters. Temple Community Clinic understands the value of health and the impact lack of care has on the patient and the community. Filling the gap in healthcare and ensuring uninsured or underinsured individuals have access to quality, wraparound healthcare helps generate a sustainable community.

Temple Community Clinic is working closely with Pillar Architecture Studio, home of Bruce W. Hoelscher, AIA and team, to develop a comfortable space that empowers individuals in our community to get necessary healthcare.

The new clinic, located on S. 31st Street and Avenue J, features 7 exam rooms, 2 procedure rooms, a central location for staff with skylights above, offices for medical staff, social work, mental health, private consultation rooms, conference room, breakroom, lab, medical supplies, and other clinic necessities.

This new site location gives the ability to have an attached community space with views of a private outdoor area that can be separated from the clinic and divided into two separate event spaces with a kitchen and pre-function area adjacent. These programs will allow the clinic to host larger educational events, live cooking demonstrations, and simultaneous activities in the community room if needed. continued on pg. 5

Wellness education and social work are services that stand out from traditional healthcare and are a cornerstone of the work at Temple Community Clinic. This allows for patients to be treated for acute and chronic care while also ensuring they receive a path to whole wellness. In addition to a variety of care specialties, Temple Community Clinic taps into our patients’ mental and social needs and provide access to life-saving and affordable prescriptions. Temple Community Clinic has always been and will continue to be a clinic anyone can be proud to visit. Temple Community Clinic has a simple goal: to be a focal point of compassion and caring in our community. For over three decades, they have remained committed to their mission to provide quality medical services and health and wellness education. However, they have outgrown their current space.

Temple Community Clinic: Building a Healthier Community / continued from pg. 4

Rendering of the private outdoor area of new Temple Community Clinic courtesy of Pillar Architecture Studio. The layout has been designed such that the Community Area can be closed off from the clinic side and separately controlled mechanical system for energy savings when not in use. Client input is important, and every design decision was directed by keeping the patient and staff’s needs in mind. The design priorities the patient’s comfort and aims to make the clinic approachable and welcoming. Much work has been done, but more is needed to get what is now estimated at $7.4 million dollar facility off the ground. Big thanks to Carpenter Foundation for an early start on fundraising with a $200,000 matching grant, followed by the McLane Family with a $1 million pledge.

These two significant contributions, along with many other individual donors, have allowed for Temple Community Clinic to secure approximately one third of the building’s cost. Sherri Woytek, Executive Director of Temple Community Clinic, expressed how thankful the clinic is to the City of Temple for helping with a new site location, KPA, and Pillar Architects for guidance through the engineering and design phase. Woytek said, “While this capital campaign effort and moving our clinic are monumental tasks, we are ready for the challenge.” When people have reliable healthcare, they can work, put food on the table, and contribute to society. Through a fantastic team of doctors, volunteers, and service providers, Temple Community Clinic helps get people back on their feet, providing keys to health and wellness, because a healthy patient builds a healthy community.

Business Spotlight: Cha Community

to Cha Community, and has just recently opened its second store in downtown Temple. Jaja and Devin are beyond excited to be in Temple, and are looking forward to spreading diversity, empowering others, and fostering a place of belonging. There is little that Cha Community enjoys more than collaborating with other small businesses in their area.

Not only does Cha Community offer a wide variety of delicious and quality tea, but they also offer coffee, lemonade, and noodles. They are going to introduce their dumplings soon, as well as dumpling workshops where you will learn to make homemade dumplings.

Go visit Jaja and Devin, and order one of their most popular drinks- the Milky Way Thai Tea or a Galaxy Lemonade!

Jaja & Devin / Co-owners of Cha Community (photo provided by Cha Community)

Follow Cha Community on facebook and instagram and visit them online at chacommunity.com.

Did you know that “cha” means “tea” in Chinese? Jaja and Devin, co-owners of Cha Community, told us that the meaning behind the name of their business represents their mission. Cha Community is here to bridge cultures, foster collaborations, and provide premium boba tea. While attending Baylor University, Jaja and Devin saw the lack of Asian American community in Central Texas. They wanted to bring Taiwanese and Chinese culture to the area and doing so in a way that would leave an impact. Not only was there a lack of Asian American community, but there was a lack of quality boba tea in the area. Devin explains to us that in Asian countries, boba tea is the equivalent to Starbucks. This inspired the duo to open Waco Cha at the Waco Downtown Farmers Market. Waco Cha moved from the Farmers Market to a trailer, then eventually in 2020 Waco Cha opened its first storefront. Now, in 2022, Waco Cha has rebranded Variety of Boba Tea at Cha Community (photo provided by Cha Community)

Cha Community - Temple Cha Community - Temple cut the ribbon for their downtown Temple location on April 8, 2022. Cha Community is an Asian American and immigrant owned small business that seeks to bridge cultures and create community through premium boba tea and handcrafted dumplings. Cha Community currently offers their full boba tea drink menu & drink catering in Temple with plans to eventually add on their full Taiwanese lunch food options as they continue growing in downtown Temple!

Business Know-How: Do's & Don'ts at Vendor Shows Temple Chamber of Commerce

Don’ts

1. Do not: Simply sit behind the table •

Create a unique and different display. Simply moving the table to the side opens your booth and gives you the space to invite attendees in. Standing up shows that you are interested and approachable and helps encourage conversation. It will assist in customers being more comfortable looking at your products. They then won’t feel like they’re bothering you by asking questions. Make eye contact, offer your assistance, and do not be on your computer the whole time! If you must enter client info, see Don’ts #2 – do not come alone.

2. Do not: Come alone •

Andrew and Kylie Johnson, owners of Warm Cookie Company, greet visitors at their vendor booth during the 2021 Baylor Scott & White Health Community Showcase. As we continue to endemic stage of the pandemic, it is fair to say that events, expos, or vendor shows may be on the horizon as a business owner. These types of events can be a great place to promote and share your product or service. In order to make the best impression on potential customers, here is a quick refresher of the Do’s and Don’ts at Vendor Shows.

Do’s

1. Do: A smile and greeting •

Customers are drawn to those having fun and being welcoming. With a big crowd, catching customers with a smile, and a hello can make a difference. A great way to start is: “Have you heard of (your company/ product/service) before?” and “Have you tried it and liked it?” Prepare to see if there is anything you can assist with or a simple “Enjoy the rest of the event!” if the answer is no. If they say yes, this is your way in! Be ready to discuss your product or service. Whether it’s to hand them a sample of your food or a pamphlet discussing your packages, putting a piece of jewelry on them, or letting them hold a cockroach (I’m looking at you, bug exterminators). Show you are interested in them!

Vendor shows are an exciting time to discuss and share your company. Having a second person assisting you at the booth will allow for more exposure and keep conversations flowing. This will also allow you to take turns meeting other vendors to network or take breaks.

3. Do not: Wait till the day of the event to plan your booth •

Practice setting up your booth ahead of time, to see what ideas you come up with and what works the best. Your logo/name needs to be front and center of the booth! Banners or pullup signs are your best friend when it comes to promotion and sales. You want your logo easily visible for attendees to see.

No one likes flat paper on the table. When potential clients pass your booth, they’re not seeing a product that is flat on tables. Find clear plastic signs or risers to hold your flyers/product up and be in their line of sight.

In need of promotional or marketing items? Members of the Temple Chamber of Commerce can help. Visit the Business Directory at www.templechamber.com and search for: Printers & Publishers, Signs & Banners, and Promotional Products & Apparel. Or call (254) 773-2105 for referrals.

2. Do: drawings, coupons & specials •

People love free swag. Pens, paper, koozies, sunglasses, and even phone chargers are in high demand.

When it comes to prizes and drawings; This is an opportunity to gain potential customers’ contact info. Collecting names, emails, and phone numbers gives you more contacts for your newsletter and a chance at new customers. A great way to draw is after the event, to get the winner into your place of business – they now know where you are and can see your success!

3. Do: Follow up fast •

Whether you’re collecting leads, inquiries, or contacts for the drawing, make sure you follow up within 24-48 hours. Following up with them via text, email, or newsletter will plant a seed and help them remember you in the long run. This also gives them a timeline for how responsive your customer service is.
