LEADERSHIP TEMPLE ALUMNI FIRST QUARTER LUNCH Tuesday, February 15, 2022 12:00 - 1:00 pm Rose Hall - 107 N. 9th Street

Temple Chamber Staff The Temple Chamber hosted Salute to Business 2022 on Tuesday, January 25, 2022. With the theme We’re Stronger Together this event was an opportunity for the business community to come together and reflect on one of the most challenging and unprecedented periods of our history. It was also an opportunity to pass on Chamber leadership positions and recognize and celebrate the community’s resiliency, innovation, and excellence as we focus on 2022 and beyond. “Salute to Business is a signature event of the Temple Chamber that we were unable to host in 2021 as a result of the pandemic. It was great to bring business and community leaders together to celebrate the greater Temple community,” said Rod Henry, President of the Temple Chamber of Commerce. Temple Chamber member restaurants served samples of their specialties to attendees during the Taste of Temple reception to begin the evening. Dinner and a keynote presentation by the 76th Speaker of the Texas House of Representatives, Dade Phelan, followed. The evening concluded with two special presentations.

Temple Chamber Vice Chair of Business and Community Development, Elliot Germany, made the presentation to the Temple Police Department during the event. “Often from a profound act of violence comes a separate and distinct profound act of peace,” Germany said.

“Both can be initiated by an entire group of people acting in concert, or a single human being coming from a place of despair, or one of sincere gratitude. Whenever our experience involves the former or the latter, our lives are often instantly and significantly impacted in some irreparable, inspirational, or symbolic way. We sometimes forget that we are all connected, but these two acts over the hands of time offer a chilling or welcoming reminder of how it is so,” Germany continued.

Meet the Temple Chamber of Commerce Spring Intern Claire Jones is from a small town in Texas, called Graham. She is a current student at the University of Mary Hardin-Baylor (UMHB) where she is classified as a junior and is studying Public Relations and Business. Claire is the daughter of Steve and Kristi Jones. When she’s not diving into work at the Chamber or studying at various coffee shops, you can find her walking her dog, cheering on Crusader football, or working out and coaching at Crossfit Centex. She also enjoys going to the lake, snow skiing, hiking, and photography. Claire decided to major in Public Relations after a Type One Diabetes diagnosis in 2011. Through her diagnosis she found a love for writing, public speaking, and standing up for what truly matters. After graduation she hopes to find a company or organization for which she is passionate in, and help with social media, event planning, and connections. Long-term Claire would like to open her own non-profit to inspire those with difficulties that they are more than just their title. She fully believes that our labels do not limit us. Education: CTE, Fine Arts & Opportunity in Temple Bre’Layshia Alexander, Baylor Scott & White SportsCare; Kevin Koonce, Right Sized Inventory; and Branan Walker, Lengefeld Lumber - LT Class of 2022 In January, the Leadership Temple class started a power-packed day at the Temple Independent School District Administration building. The facility is located in the Santa Fe Plaza in downtown Temple. The Plaza was a joint venture between the City of Temple, the Tax Increment Reinvestment Zone, Temple ISD, and other community partners aimed at furthering the city’s downtown revitalization efforts. Through the partnership, the reinvestment zone provided $10 million — about 83 percent — of the $12 million dollar cost for the administration building and infrastructure improvements. The goal of the facility was to provide a one-stop-shop to serve the district and showcase Temple ISD’s rich history. Leadership Temple had the opportunity to meet with Dr. Bobby Ott, Superintendent; Assistant Superintendents Lisa Adams, Eric Haugeberg, Kent Boyd, Donna Ward; Kallen Vaden, Chief Financial Officer; Christine Parks, Chief of Communications and Community, and Shannon Myers, District 7 School Board member. The group then headed to Temple High School, where they toured the newly renovated Fine Arts Facility as well as the Career and Technical Education (CTE) wing. There the group spoke with Catrina Lotspeich, Fine Arts Director, Temple ISD Superintendent Dr. Ott, and Denise Ayers, CTE Director.

The detail in the planning of the play, hallways, seating areas, and even the school song placed as piano keys on the wall was an experience of a lifetime. It is evident that because of the Bond passed in 2015 and more importantly, the hard work of the administration; Temple Independent School District is advancing into the modern age of education. Lastly, Leadership Temple was welcomed by Temple College President, Dr. Christy Ponce, and other staff members at the Health Occupations Building. Temple College recently passed a bond that will allow for many improvements across campus right in time for the 100th year celebration. Dr. Ponce informed the group about programs available in partnership with other universities to provide bachelor, master, and even doctorate degrees right here at Temple College without students having to relocate. The day ended with a detailed tour of the simulation lab and every LT class member overwhelmed by the amazing opportunities coming to Temple, Texas.

The improvement of CTE at Temple High School has allowed students to explore career options at a much younger age than many of the Leadership Temple participants were afforded during their time in High School. Students can choose from classes such as Cosmetology, A/V Technology, Pharmaceuticals, Veterinary, Culinary, and even Automotive. The new facility is truly first-class with updated amenities and top-notch equipment for students to utilize. By teaming up with local businesses such as Baylor Scott & White Health, Temple Machine Shop, Johnson Bros Ford, and Panel Specialists Inc., the CTE program has provided the best curriculum possible to help students transition into the job market. The group also had the opportunity to tour the Fine Arts department seeing much-needed improvements to the band hall, THS auditorium, orchestra room, and art classes. As the group walked through the auditorium, they had the

United Way of Central Texas’ Annual VITA Program Helps Access the Earned Income Tax Credit, an Anti-Poverty Program, to Help Advance the Common Good

United Way of Central Texas United Way of Central Texas (UWCT) and its community partners— Heart of Texas Goodwill Job Connection, Central Texas Housing Consortium, Temple College, Harker Heights YMCA, Texas A&M-Central Texas, Grace Christian Center and the McLane School of Business at the University of Mary HardinBaylor,— will kick-off the 2022 Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) program at the beginning of February. In 2021, the UWCT VITA volunteers prepared nearly 1,000 free tax returns for Central Texans and brought in over $1.4 Million in refunds and nearly $450,000 in Earned Income Tax Credits (EITC) to our local community. VITA volunteers are IRS certified and knowledgeable in EITC providing basic income tax return services without charge, ensuring 100% of the tax refund goes directly to the customer. The Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC) is broadly considered our nation’s most effective pro-work, anti-poverty tool. The EITC is a refundable federal tax credit for lower income working people that encourages and rewards work, offsetting the federal payroll and income taxes, and giving low to moderate-income working families a stronger possibility of financial stability, advancing the common good and creating opportunities for all.

Research suggests that EITC positively affects children and families far beyond the limited timeframe during which families claim the credit. In fact, studies show that the EITC improves child health and academic achievement, increasing the likelihood of college attendance and improving prospects for higher earnings when children become adults. Only those who work are eligible, allowing them to keep more of what they earn. When tax season arrives, VITA volunteers dedicate themselves to preparing hundreds of tax returns for Central Texas residents. Helping a family complete a tax return offers instant gratification as a volunteer. This is UWCT’s twelfth year to provide tax assistance to the local community. Clients eligible to have their taxes prepared for free must make less than $55,000 a year—last year, the average client income was about $24,000 per year. UWCT VITA sites will open the week of February 1-April 18, 2022. To schedule an appointment, visit www.uwct.org OR call the United Way of Central Texas office at 254-778-8616.
