Since opening in 1988, Ellis Air Systems has been a pillar in the community. Every year the Ellis bunch takes no breaks in the perpetual quest of improving the lives of it’s fellow members of the community. This past year has been difficult for many, Ellis knew that their call to help was going to be heightened during the pandemic. When other’s were weary to enter a customer’s home, Ellis took the opportunity and ran with it. They continued on with their annual furnace giveaway, gifting an entire new heat pump Lennox HVAC system and a whole home air cleaner to a Belton resident in need, at the local Temple Montessori school and child care, they donated and installed nearly a dozen electronic bi polar ionization air cleaners, known as COVID Killers, at no charge. BCYC, Habitat For Humanity, YoungLife and 4-1-1 House Bridge East Temple are big beneficiaries to Ellis Air’s generosity. “I think that in 2020 the community got a clear picture of which local businesses are here to help.”- Mason Ellis, C.F.O. Ellis Air has exploded to over 120 employees and has no plans on slowing down. If you need any residential or commercial air conditioning, call a local family owned business, call the best, call Ellis Air Systems in Temple and Killeen.

Be on the lookout for a new community involvement project that Ellis is hailing as the “Fan Drive” which they started on 4/7/21 and will be running it through mid May. They kicked off the event by donating 10 new window unit air conditioners and 50 new box fans to jump start things. The Fan Drive was created to help local residents that do not have air conditioning, if you’d like to donate or help with the cause, please check their Facebook for more details.

Lone Star Structures began as a dream for Lee and Sadie Fisher. Both of them grew up on family farms and saw firsthand the value of hard work. The desire to raise their family in a similar setting was instilled in their hearts and they set out to pursue that dream. Their vision came to fruition in 1997 with the purchase of a tract of land on US 77 between Lott and Rosebud Texas. A family friend came on board and together they designed and constructed their first building. By fall of that year production was in full swing. Today the family members are involved in the business one way or another. The Fishers are actively involved in their church and are members of Faith Mennonite Fellowship. They live and believe in the timeless and old-fashioned values of honesty, integrity and good work ethics. These values are more than mere traditions, but are a lifestyle of time honored values that in turn bless their community. These principles have earned them a reputation for having the best value and workmanship in Central Texas. Today their business continues to grow and has expanded to include various styles and options. In addition to their main location in Lott and a sales office in Temple, they also have an online store where you can shop and purchase 24/7. They invite you to join their long list of satisfied customers!

Alfred Lastovica opened his doors in 1950, in downtown Temple with the help of his wife, Joan. Once the store was running smoothly, Joan returned to her career as a registered nurse. The Lastovicas were blessed with three sons and one daughter. The boys followed in Alfred Sr.’s footsteps. Johnny’s irst day at the store was the day after his graduation from Kilgore College in 1974, where he earned his degree as a Certi ied Horologist and Jewelry Repairman. Alfred literally handed his son the keys to the store, and left the next day for a much needed week long vacation! Johnny quickly learned how to manage Lastovica Jewelers. Billy came on board in 1981, after earning his B.B.A. at Sam Houston State University as well as a degree at Kilgore in 1981, where he mastered jewelry crafting and casting. Alfred Jr. is a GIA Certi ied Gemologist in Houston. When you visit the store, you’ll also meet Johnny’s wife Diane, and Billy’s wife, Helen. The Lastovicas are experts in assisting you in the selection of that special item.

Twenty six years ago Henry and Jeanette decided they were too old to manhandle cabinets anymore. With that decision, they handed over the custom-cabinetry business to their son, James, and opened Lonesome Pine Nursery on the same property. “People are much nicer buying plants!”. Linda Neighbors, a customer since day one, quips “Henry charged extra for these weeds!” Jeanette says, “We don’t have a business, we have one big family” and that really is how it feels at Lonesome Pine. Last October Henry passed away after 52 years of marriage to Jeanette. But his legacy lives on at the nursery in a portrait that sits among the plants in the greenhouse. Keeping Jeanette company in spirit during her work days.

Journalistic integrity, community service guide the Telegram The Mayborn family has been committed to journalistic integrity and community service in Central Texas for more than 90 years.
“We strive daily to bring you the news that is important to your daily lives.”
“We have a strong commitment to the communities we serve,” said Sue Mayborn, the Telegram’s editor and publisher. “We strive daily to bring you the news that is important to your daily lives. It is our job to present the information to you fairly and accurately.” Frank Mayborn came to Temple in 1929 with his father, Ward, when they bought the Telegram. While Ward soon decided to pursue other opportunities, Frank, except for a volunteer tour of duty in WWII, made Temple his home, building and working for the betterment of Central Texas. Following Frank Mayborn’s death in 1987, his wife Sue, who had worked by his side at the newspaper for many years, assumed the roles of president, editor and publisher. The Telegram and the Killeen Daily Herald are the only general circulation daily newspapers owned by a local individual in Texas, according to the Texas Press Association. There are 66 full- and part-time employees, a network of correspondents and photographers, and 44 independent contract carriers in the Telegram family who all work to deliver local news and information to a large Central Texas audience.
