The mystery genre - the crime / detective film A) Please have a look at these familiar pictures and then answer:

1. What do Inspector Poirot, Miss Marple, Perry Mason, Lt. Columbo, Jessica Fletcher and Sherlock Holmes all have in common??? _______________________________________________________ ____________________________________________________________________________________ 2. What are their methods? What techniques do they use? ___________________________________ ____________________________________________________________________________________ INFO: In the end, all these detectives solve the mysteries sometimes using complicated forensics and always get the criminal. But what is FORENSIC SCIENCE (abbreviated forensics) you so often hear about in TV series like CSI? It refers to the method of obtaining evidence related to a crime: using DNA, fingerprints, fibers, blood… often invisible to the naked eye but examined by trained detectives. Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, author and creator of the amateur sleuth Sherlock Holmes, had a significant influence on popularising scientific crime detection methods and encouraging the imagination of emerging forensic investigators. However, popular TV series nowadays make everything seem a lot easier: the truth is that crimes that are investigated and solved so fast on our TV screens, often take months, sometimes even years to solve, and teams of highly trained scientists!

B) Talking about crimes… what crimes are being defined below??? Match each word / expression to its correct definition: 1. Blackmail 2. Pick-pocketing 3. Kidnapping 4. Forgery 5. Smuggling 6. Drug-trafficking 7. Shop-lifting 8. Murder 9. Drunken-driving 10. Carjacking 11. Bribery 12. Rape Alexandra Duarte ©
