That is the motivation behind the European Day of Languages, which is a celebration not only of European languages but also of the 6000 or more languages spoken around the world. The idea is that by encouraging people across the globe to learn other languages, citizens can reach a greater intercultural understanding and have better opportunities in life as well. Why bother learning a language, isn't it too difficult? Language learning can benefit people of all ages and it is never too late to start learning a new language and enjoying the advantages it can bring. Even just a few Alexandra Duarte Š

words of another language can help you to make friends and succeed in what you need to do when in another land. Learning other peoples' languages can also help us to understand each other better and overcome cultural differences. So what can people do who want to join in celebrating the European Day of Languages? You could have a party, hold an international food market, put on a play, plan a dance and music festival, or hold a competition. Any event, big or small, that makes people excited about different cultures, languages and language learning can contribute to the day. 1st Activity
