WORS has an overall competition within each age class of each category, and an overall for its Comp and Elite categories (refer to WORS Guidelines for details). Racers that registered with WORS are issued a series number and score points toward series overalls. Series Overalls are posted at each WORS event and at www.wors.org.



Points will be figured retroactively for only one race!

Registrants must request retroactive credit and write their race number from the race for which they request retroactive credit on their Series Registration Form.  WORS is the 2011 USA Cycling Mountain Bike State Championship Series for Wisconsin. WORS registrants who are USA Cycling Mountain members and also Wisconsin residents are competing for state titles. All competing in the WORS overall are also eligible to qualify for the USA Cycling National Mountain Bike Championships.

Great Prizes 20 (in honor of our twentieth year, usually 10) lucky overall finishers will be awarded prize packages from our generous sponsors valued from $3500 to $300. WORS registrants that receive an overall series score (see WORS Guidelines) are automatically entered into this raffle and all have an equal chance to win. CATEGORY DESCRIPTIONS First Timer: (15 and older as of 12/31/11) A

non-series category for individuals looking for a casual initial exposure to WORS. Race distance is approximately half that of the Citizen race. Junior (age class): (Boys & Girls racing age 14 & under) Races for this category start at least 1/2 hour before the Citizen race and are 3-6 miles in length (1-2 laps of a modified Citizen course). Citizen (USA Cycling Category 3): (Men & Women) A Citizen competitor shall be a new or recreational racer with limited riding time. Racers with 2 or more years of racing experience and training more than 4 hours per week, should compete in the Sport category or above. Women with 3 top 5 and men with 3 top 10 overall finishes (not age class) in WORS Citizen category for the year must advance the following year. Winning time in this category will generally be approximately 40 minutes (course length of 8-12 miles dependent upon conditions). sport (USA Cycling Category 2*): (Men & Women) A Sport competitor is an experienced racer of average ability. Women with 3 top 5 and men with 3 top 10 overall finishes (not age class) in WORS Sport category for the year must advance the following year. USA Cycling Road category 4 & 5 racers may compete in this category, however men competing on the road at category 3 level or higher on the road with USA Cycling and/or any other road association must race WORS Comp or above. Winning time in this category will generally be approximately 65 minutes (course length of 1218 miles dependent upon course & conditions).

Comp (USA Cycling Category 2 men): (Men only)

A Comp competitor is a racer looking for top level Category 2 competition. *Male USA Cycling Mountain Category 2 competitors looking for State and Regional recognition should compete in this category. Competitors with 5 top 10 overall

finishes (not age class) in WORS Comp category for the year must advance the following year or petition WORS in writing as to why they should be exempt from mandatory upgrading to Cat 1. In WORS races, Comp competitors will generally share the course with the WORS Elite competitors, but race a shorter distance. Winning time will generally be approximately 90 minutes (course length of 18-24 miles depending upon terrain & course conditions). Pro, Cat 1 (WORS Elite): (Men & Women) WORS highest level of competition. Either an International Pro or USA Cycling Mountain Category 1 annual license is required to register and to compete in this category. Winning time in this category will generally be approximately 100 minutes (course length of 25-32 miles dependent upon terrain & course conditions). Pro & Category 1 women and Cat 1 Juniors will race the WORS Comp distance.

WORS Guidelines & Rules to Race By are in place to provide consistency from race to race within the Wisconsin Off Road Series. They are designed to support a safe, fair, and enjoyable racing experience for all involved. WORS Guidelines & Rules to Race By apply to all WORS events and all participants in WORS events!

A competitorâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s racing age determines their age class. Racing age is a racerâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s age as of December 31 of the current year.

WORS events are scored in these classes: First Timer: Men & Women racing age 15 and

over, non-series. Times (results) for this category will only be posted at the event, not online. Junior (age class): Boys & Girls: 8 & under, 9-10, 11-12, and 13-14. Citizen (USA Cycling Cat 3): Men: 14 & under, 1518, 19-29, 30-39, 40-49, 50-59, 60 & over, Clydesdale** 39 & under and Clydesdale** 40 & over. Women: 14 & under, 15-18, 19-29, 30-39, 40-49, and 50 & over. sport (USA Cycling Cat 2): Junior (male ): 14 & under, 15-16, 17-18, Junior (female): 14 & under, 15-18 (2 lap. Men: 19-24, 25-29, 30-34, 35-39, 40-44, 45-49, 50-54, 55-59, 60 & over, Singlespeed, and Clydesdale** 39 & under and Clydesdale** 40 & over. Women: Open, 19-29, 30-39, 40-49, and 50 & over.

2011 guidelines and rules

Cat 1 (USAC Cat 1 license required). Male: the WORS tent onsite at a WORS event. A racer 15-18, 19-23, 24-34,35-44, and 45-54. Female: 15-18, 19-29, 30-39 and 40 & over. A competitor that registers for a category they are ineligible for will be Disqualified!

(i.e. A more advanced rider entering a Citizen race.)

**Clydesdale class is for male racers weighing an absolute minimum of 200 pounds. All Clydesdale competitors must weigh in at race registration. Anyone weighing in at less than 210# must reweigh dressed in just bike shorts, socks and a t-shirt. Failure to weigh in or make weight will result in the racer being assigned to the appropriate age class with their category.

WORS (Series) REGISTRATION Racers wishing to receive an overall in WORS or participate in WORS team competition must register with WORS. Series registration may be either completed online at www.wors.org by April 15, 2011 or by downloading a form from the website or using the one from the 2011 WORS Racer Handbook and mailing it with the appropriate registration fee to WORS, postmarked no later than April 4, 2011. These deadlines are to allow for number assignment and notification in time for racers to register for the first WORS event of the year using their number. Series registrations after April 15th should take place at

WORS will inform those registering by April 15th of their series number by e-mail and will begin assigning numbers on April 1st (specific number requests will not be given priority after March 31st). Those registering after April 15th will receive their number assignment at the WORS tent at their first event. A racer may not compete in Sport with a Citizen number and vice versa! WORS timing system will not accept an incorrect number and your data will fail to appear on the results.

LOST OR FORGOTTEN NUMBER PLATES:

Replacement numbers are available at the WORS tent at a cost of $5 for a new series number plate (plastic) or $1 for a temporary number plate. Back number replacements are 50 cents each.

Online Race Registration for each event closes at midnight on the Monday just before the race. Mail-In entries: Must be postmarked at least 8 days (Saturday in most cases) before the day of the event to avoid being assessed late fee at race registration.

will pay a $5 administrative fee and have two options: 1) A racer may turn in their series number plate at the WORS tent to have a percentage of their accumulated points transferred to the new category (70% for a one category upgrade, 50% for a two category change) and be issued a new series number or 2) Keep their original category points intact and start with zero in the new category. In either case all results applicable to the team competition will register. Comp racers moving to Cat 1 using option 1 transfer 60% of their points from the Comp overall (not age class) to Cat 1; option 2 is unchanged. DOWNGRADING: Those who feel circumstances warrant their moving down in category must petition WORS in writing with the reason for the downgrade. They will have to reregister with WORS, pay a $10 administrative fee, and will be given full credit for points from their original category results. CHANGE WITHIN CATEGORY: Those making a change between age class, Clydesdale or Singlespeed within the same category will pay a $10 administrative fee, turn in their series number plate and have 75% of their previously earned series points transferred.

WORS Series Registrants receive $1 discount (requires having online profile up to date with current series number) on WORS race entries fees when pre-registering online.

First Timers - All finishers receive an achievement medal. Participants must be present at the awards ceremony to receive their award. Junior, Citizen, Sport, & Comp: the top finishers in each age and sex class, at each event, will receive custom WORS medals. The number of places awarded is based on the average number of racers in each class the previous year. See the Medal Distribution Chart. Cat 1 classes are awarded “WORS Cash” (see chart page) dependent upon the size of the field within their respective age class. Pros (UCI international license) and Cat 1 overall compete for a cash prize list per the chart on the next page. The total prize list and depth of awards, is determined by the combined number of Pro and Cat 1 competitors in the race with the total number of male Pro and Cat 1 competitors determining the Men’s prize list and the total number of female Pro and Cat 1 competitors determining the Women’s prize list. There are no age classes and Cat 1 racers are eligible dependent upon their overall placement in the Pro/Cat 1 race. Cat 1 racers winning money from the Elite prize list are excluded from age class “WORS Cash”.

USA Cycling Pro Men and Women compete for WORS ELITE PRIZE LIST There are NO age classes.

Unclaimed awards may be requested by mail by sending a $3 check for each medal or a $6 check for each plaque (to cover postage and handling) made out to WORS. Please include your name, address, phone number, name of race, category and age class, and place of finish. Mail info and check to: WORS, 8675 Rolling Hills Road, Custer, WI 54423. Mailing requests should be made within four weeks of an awards ceremony.

To receive an overall series score in WORS, to be eligible for overall series awards, and to be entered in the WORS Overall Raffle, a competitor must first have a WORS series number (see registration section of these Guidelines). To be scored in WORS overalls, a competitor must compete in a minimum of 6 series events (7 for Comp, Cat 1, and Pro) during 2011. For Citizen and Sport a competitor’s best 7 results will be used for tabulation of their final overall points. In the Comp, Cat 1, and Pro categories the best 8 results will be used. A competitor who competes in more than 7 events (8 for Comp, Cat 1, and Pro) will be awarded 5 bonus points per additional event completed (maximum of 30 points). DNF’s will remain 1 point. Race and/or WORS officials may remove any racer from the start whom they feel is attempting to compete on an unsafe bike. Racers must start with and ride the same bike throughout any single event. ÊÊ Personal listening devices which may interfere with a racer’s awareness of other racers and their surroundings are strictly prohibited on the race course. ÊÊ All Competitors must be self sufficient. All repairs during a race must be performed by the individual racers. Tools and spare parts used in a repair must be carried by the racer. No off-course assistance is allowed and racers may not “cannibalize” or accept any parts off anyone else’s bike during a race. ÊÊ Deviation from the marked course will result in disqualification unless the competitor reenters the course at point of exit. This includes ducking under any flagging marking the boundaries of the finish chute. A competitor that purposely leaves the marked course during competition is deemed to have retired from the race and will be scored as a DQ or DNF. ÊÊ Feeding and/or “hand-ups” may occur on any part of the course. However any interference with another competitor during a hand-up is grounds for disqualification. This is an override of USA Cycling Mountain rules and is in effect throughout WORS. ÊÊ Any competitor littering the course with a gel packet, food wrappers or other waste will be disqualified! ÊÊ A competitor on their bike has the right-of-way over one pushing their bike. Whenever a competitor is off their bike, they need to make every effort to allow access to the fastest/most rideable part of the track to racers on their bikes. ÊÊ Lapped racers must yield the track immediately. A lapped racer by definition is one from the same starting wave as the overtaking racer. Other racers being overtaken should make every effort to let faster riders by as soon as the course allows. ÊÊ It is the responsibility of an overtaking rider to pass safely. No racer is expected to stop their race to allow other racers to pass.

ÊÊ Mountain biking is an individual sport, and even though WORS does have a team competition, entering into agreements or forming alliances (monetary or otherwise) to control or alter the results of a race will result in disqualification from that individual event.

ÊÊ Pre-riding the race course after the start of the first race of the day is prohibited! On race day the only individuals riding bicycles on the race course should be those entered in the category(ies) competing at the time. Interference with a race other than the one a competitor is entered in will result in disqualification (i.e. an Elite racer riding on the race course during the Sport race in such a way as to cause alteration of results or put Sport racers in danger). ÊÊ A race may be halted or rerouted by the race director or emergency personnel in case of severe injury to a rider or life threatening weather. Racers failing to heed the instruction of medical personal and/or course marshals attending to an injured rider will be disqualified! ÊÊ Protests of the results, the conduct of a racer, or any other matters related to the race, may only be filed by a competitor in the event or a race official. Protests must be reported to or filed with a timing official within 10 minutes of the completion of an event, initial posting of results in question, or a ruling to be considered valid. All results become final as of the presentation of awards. ÊÊ The sale of merchandise or display of products for promotional purposes at WORS events without the permission of WORS and the individual event director is prohibited. This includes but is not limited to banners, tents, and anything not permanently attached to a vehicle that a competitor has driven to an event.

2011 guidelines and rules to race by

at the Subaru Cup comes from a series racer’s participation in either the Super D or the Short Track. Series points will be awarded for a racer’s placing amongst racers from their WORS category within the Subaru Cup Short Track or Super D age class (not normal WORS class) raced. VOLUNTEER POINTS: Series competitors who forfeit participation in a race to help run the event may qualify for volunteer points. To receive these points, a point total equal to a racers lowest scoring race excluding DNF’s, a racer must: 1) contact the race director at least 8 days in advance of the race to apply for acceptance to the race staff, 2) work a minimum of 5 hours on race day, and 3) pick up a VP (volunteer points) form from the WORS tent, fill it out, have their Race Director sign it and turn it in to WORS Timing & Scoring. A series competitor may include only one VP in their overall results. The VP will either replace a competitor’s lowest scoring event with a point value equal to the second lowest score or one equal to their lowest score depending upon the number of scoring events they have in their overall score. POINTS: Points awarded at each individual WORS race toward series overall scores for Comp, Cat 1, and Pro overalls, as well as places within each age class for all categories, are listed in the WORS Series (Overall) Point Scale table below. Points awarded for Cat 1 age classes are awarded by combining overall finish points with age class finish points.

Iola Bump and Jump race course evolves a little each year based on racer input, rider and spectator safety, and the condition of individual sections of the track. However, the overall character that makes this course a favorite of many remains constant. The start loop that takes racers up and around the back side of Iola’s 40 & 60 meter ski jumps and then drops back down past the lodge into the jump bowl may be the best lead-out in all of WORS. In addition, several minor singletrack modifications have been made to improve the racing experience for all. For the youngest novice racers, the WORS Kid’s Race course provides an opportunity for them to expand their skills.

1997 a Rhinelander area Fire Department with the help of several volunteers started a mountain bike race created by Bikes-N-Boards, a premier outfitter for outdoor sports. Now run by the Boy Scouts of Samoset Council, this race will help fund the world renowned Camp Tesomas facility open since 1935 where youth from around the globe have come to enjoy the Northwood’s. Camp Tesomas (Hanna Venture Base) is located only minutes north of Rhinelander, where it’s set on the shores of Crystal Lake, a beautiful spring fed lake deserving of its name. This pristine setting is perfect for mountain biking with the lake making an excellent choice for cooling down after a hard ride through the woods. 2007 marked the first year that this Mountain Bike Race was affiliated with the WORS. The race begins and ends at Camp Tesomas (Hanna Venture Base). The trail also traverses lands owned by the School District of Rhinelander, Plum Creek, Inc., and Terry Strong. We thank each of them for their cooperation in allowing this trail to exist. And a special thank you to Wayne Fish, for his dedicated hours of trail work. We are indebted to his dedication to this race. Wayne was taken from us by brain cancer and this race is now dedicated to Wayne Fish. His dream of a premier race in the Rhinelander area will live on in his honor for years to come. The course is heavily forested, containing a mix of hardwoods and pine plantations. The soil is ideally suited for

Shift into your big ring, put the hammer down and see how long you can hang. This course is approximately 55% fast rolling cross-country ski trail and 45% singletrack. The first lap will have more ski trail and additional laps more singletrack. About 50% of the singletrack is technical (most of this is omitted from the Citizens’ course). Firm terrain, gravel, rocky singletrack, slick when wet.

Staged at one of the Midwest’s premier crosscountry skiing areas, Nine Mile Forest, it takes full advantage of this area’s abundant single track and wide open rolling ski trails and adds a bit of double track to provide mountain bikers with a two wheeled thrill ride. Nine Mile is just 4 miles west of Wausau and with over 25 combined miles of wide fast rolling cross country ski trails and twisting rocky single track through the forest, this expansive trail network offers numerous options for course placement. The single track of this race course will keep you tightly gripping the bars and searching for the best line however, racers will need to be prepared to shift to their big ring as they roll out onto the ski trail segments. Whether your forte is hammering on the wide open rolling hills or carving a line through technical terrain, you’re assured a great ride at this event. Nine Mile also allows for a longer overall course with less lapping making for a more enjoyable racing experience for all. Pre-riding will begin at noon on Saturday and all riding a bike within the boundaries of Nine Mile will need to comply with a $4 trail fee (one pass will be good for both Saturday and Sunday). “I race bikes because I enjoy nothing more than riding my bike through the woods. My favorite race of 2010 was the Subaru Cup. Everything about that race was amazing. The course was challenging and fun and the competition was very exciting. Most of all, the crowds were insane; they truly made it the most exciting race I’ve ever done. 2010 was my first year racing for the Trek Stores of Madison. The support they gave me was unlike anything I’ve experienced, and I can’t thank them enough for all the work they put in to making the 2010 season so successful. In 2011 I have plans to race WORS, Chequamegon, a few WEMS races, and ride my mountain bike as mush as possible with my awesome teammates.” ** WORS editor’s note: In 2010, Abby became the first racer ever to win four WORS Overall titles.

This challenging course snakes its way up, down and around the Crystal Ridge Ski Area. Tight single-track, fast fire roads and the “Bonsai” switch-back climb are sure to keep you alive. Welcome to the Alterra Coffee Bean Classic. A challenging five to six-mile lap snakes its way up, down and around the Crystal Ridge Ski Area. Racers of all levels get the chance to experience a little of everything, including “The Wall” climb, the “Small Intestine” single track, and the “Pavia Plunge”, that will keep you hanging on all the way to the end. Get ready for a mountain biking journey along the hills of the Koshkonong Creek. We start out with a dash to the top, climbing through the vendor area for the first 1/2 mile. marathon style race format lives on at the Reforestation Ramble again for 2011. We believe much of the success from past seasons clearly came from distinct differences in the overall series layout and the different styles of racing that came with the diverse race venues.....and the Ramble definitely provides a nontraditional racing experience! Again in 2011 you will find the course to be a great mix of fast wide open fire lanes, a decent amount of flowing singletrack, and the new norm for this race, a few grinding inclines to keep everyone in check. Pine groves and rolling groves of American elm and aspen make the single track fast and enjoyable, while being technically challenging. The sand based soil holds up great in moist conditions and provides just the right type of surface for great racing no matter the weather conditions, a guarantee you will find yourself begging for the finish with a smile on your face. The later date gives racers of all types one last ramp up for the Chequamegon 40, which takes place just over a month after the Ramble….so come on out for one last high mileage race as you prepare for the 40! Please note the different start times for the Reforestation Ramble, remind yourself and fellow racers that the Ramble does not follow the traditional start times due to the distances of each category. racing for 17 or 18 years now and the best word to describe it is passion: I have a true passion for the sport of mountain biking. My favorite race from WORS 2010 was Treadfest. I had a horrible start and didn’t feel like racing...I hit the first singletrack and something clicked. My Trek Top Fuel was killing the trail...I started having fun and started racing fast. I was never able to catch the leaders, but I finished 3rd and knew the following weekend at Chequamegon was going to be a good one! Gear Grinder is back as my title sponsor along with support from Trek, Hyundai, Crank Bros, Bell, and Oakley. 2011 looks like more of the same. WORS racing to get fit for the 3 big races in the midwest and about as much cylocross racing as a person can handle!”

“I am not sure I am one of those people that would just ride to ride, I really only have one reason and that is to compete. The Subaru Cup was definitely my favorite race of the 2010 season. The course design fit my abilities well: hard technical climbs and shorter descents. I raced for Mafia Racing out of Boulder, CO in 2010 because they offered great support, had the best equipment, and most importantly they just love racing. David at Mafia is a hard worker and loves the sport and is trying to help it grow. I also thank my wife Jamie for helping me along the way. Also, I am thankful that the Lord Jesus Christ has given me the abilities and health I have to enjoy life and to praise him through it. My plans for 2011 are coming together and it looks like another spring and summer of WORS and WCA road racing to build fitness. I’ll look to come into the cross season for a solid run at a top 5 USGP standings and a shot at the National CX title in Madison. It will probably mean more focused racing and preparation, but I’m hoping that doesn’t mean missing another chance at a WORS title in 2011 which would be great.”

a part of the 2010 WORS series as a racer and as a team sponsor. 2011 will mark my 14th season racing Mountain Bikes and because of that I plan to mix it up a bit, pack up the bike and travel the nation in search of some great riding. My first big stop of the season will be the Cohutta 100, where I plan to better my last year finish of 2nd place! Wish me luck! After that my main goal will be a top 3 overall in the NUE 100 series and then the XC Marathon National Championships. I will plan to attend as many WORS races as possible, and support my teammates.
