T4L device management in schools
The NSW Department of Education provides schools with solutions to deliver a level of self-management for devices received through the T4L rollout and discretionary purchase through EdBuy.
Windows desktops, notebooks and tablets
Your school’s eT4L Server provides a simple way to prepare a brand new Windows device for first time and ongoing use and management.
y Easy build/rebuild with support delivered remotely via your school’s eT4L server
y Easy installation of software via the DoE Software Catalogue and UDM
y Logon to any eT4L built device using your department user credentials
y Automatically mapped shared drives and printers according to user type.

Apple iPad and Mac
All schools have access to Jamf Pro to deliver mobile device management (MDM) for their Apple devices, including iPads and Mac computers. New Apple devices are pre-enrolled in each school’s Apple School Manager and a four-year Jamf Pro licence is included. With Jamf Pro established, schools can:
y Turn on new Apple devices and have them auto-configure and install the school’s standard apps
y Wirelessly deploy new apps and OS updates to all or targeted devices
y Configure restrictions and policies on devices
y Track your entire Apple fleet inventory with full details about each device
Find out more about Apple mobile device management including licencing.
Google Chromebooks
NSW DoE provides an easy enrolment process for the department’s Google domain. Enrolled Chromebooks work seamlessly and effectively with the department’s Wi-Fi infrastructure and with the DoE Google Workspace service. Users just turn them on and logon for instant access to their cloud resources, with a consistent, reliable user experience. In 2021, we launched access to Google Delegated Admin for schools. This provides local access to the Google Admin Console allowing schools to:
y Assign settings and configurations to your fleet of Chromebooks and Google Flex devices
y Wirelessly deploy Chrome apps or extensions to users at your school for automatic installation.
y Track your entire Chrome fleet inventory with full details about each device
y Turn on Android app functions and deploy Google Play Store apps (Internet@Edge sites only)

User scenario
Our teachers and students use iPads regularly. Teachers use Apple Classroom to manage digital experiences with students, completing creative tasks such as filmmaking with iMovie and Clips, digital drawing with Tayasui Sketches School, and creating amazing presentations and digital books with Keynote and Pages. But these devices are starting to get old and we need replacements.
We considered other devices, but the portability, durability and suitability for our school’s learning needs, meant the decision to choose iPads again was easy. With Jamf Pro management licenses included, maintaining our fleet is a breeze.
Finally, as our students and teachers store most of their work in the cloud, the base iPad’s 64GB of storage is all we need!

User scenario
We have a successful BYOD iPad program and are keen to provide the opportunity for students to take their skills to the next level with a mobile multimedia lab. Students can complete simple tasks on their own devices, but we need high performance devices for them to explore the full range of graphics, music and video creation, using industry-standard programs.
The MacBook Air ticks all these boxes and will help to make this lab mobile. Whilst in the past the management of these devices would have made this choice difficult, the inclusion of Jamf Pro management means we can now manage both our iPads and Macs from the one console.

Our school is refreshing its computer lab, and we want to ensure we use our allocation efficiently. The majority of online tasks completed by students include creating websites with Microsoft Sway and working within the Google Classroom environment. In addition, students often complete basic photo editing and manipulation, with the occasional need to edit and compile videos.
The base desktop is great value, is capable of performing to most of our students’ requirements and seeing as we have plenty of existing monitors is a perfect match.
We might also combine this order with a few intermediate desktops to ensure we have the capacity to complete high-end video editing when required.

User Scenario
We have a successful BYOD program and are now designing a brand new multimedia lab to supplement this program. Students can complete simple tasks on their own devices but we need high-performance desktops to ensure equity in completing high-end video editing, graphics and web development.
The intermediate desktop ticks all these boxes and allows us to create an empowering new technology space with our T4L units. We do have existing monitors but are considering using some of our allocation to acquire 27 inch monitors that will improve the workflow in both photo and video editing activities.
Monitors
Are you keen to empower your students’ high-end tasks with a larger screen size? Older VGA monitors (analogue) are not really suited to newer desktops that expect higherresolution digital displays. It might be time to invest in a new monitor for your devices (confirm that the included cables will meet your needs, an adapter may be required).
Remember monitors will require:
Monitors come equipped with:

Chromebooks
Chromebooks have really taken off across NSW public schools in the past few years. It makes sense when they combine an easily shareable, locally manageable, totally portable device that effectively does what most people use devices for – accessing the Internet.
What exactly is a Chromebook?
y A Chromebook is a unique computing device that runs browser based tools and web apps with super efficiency
y Chromebooks do not run the Windows operating system, Windows apps or installed programs
y Running Chrome OS means that for the majority of basic tasks they are simple, fast and effective
These devices have the performance to complete:
y Classroom tasks including accessing and utilising the online versions Microsoft 365 and Google Workspace
y Online creative activities
y STEM activities including online coding activities
Chromebooks come equipped with:
y A pressure resistant 11.6”, 13” or higher (diagonal) touch screen with included stylus for digital inking out of the box
y Fully convertible and can be rotated 360 degrees to be both a notebook and tablet ready for mobile learning as well as keyboard heavy tasks
y Shock-absorbent rubberised bumpers to increase durability
y A Chrome Management Console license for the DoE Chrome Google domain
y A much faster processor, more memory and storage to suit power-users of Chrome OS
Device Management:
y Simple enrolment into the department’s Google domain
y Students and staff sign-on using their DoE user account to access Google Workspace and Microsoft 365
Limitations:
y Connection to eT4L fileshares and printers may be restricted
y Cannot run Windows programs or applications

User scenario
We are after a fleet of shared devices that students can access quickly and easily to complete a range of everyday learning tasks. From online collaboration in Google Workspace to the use of creativity tools like Canva for Education. Our teachers use Google Classroom to coordinate learning in our school, and we are keen to get the maximum devices with our allocation.

With a simple and super-fast login experience, Chromebooks are perfect for our shared device environment, and it is a bonus that they work so well with Google Workspace tools! The Base devices have cameras and touch screens that our model of learning demands, as well as battery life that will last our entire school day. They may not have the full feature set of a Windows or Mac device, but they meet our needs perfectly.

Schools that receive larger T4L unit allocations might like to use this handy T4L Devices Calculator in Excel to help them determine exactly how many of each device they can order to appropriately consume all their T4L units. When you’ve determined exactly how many of each device you want, you can transpose those numbers into your T4L school order form.
Here’s a scratch form to scribble your numbers on:
