WALKING IN DIFFERENT WAYS
Although he is 37 years old, Luca Scacchetti is described as a " y o u n g " architect, since architects do not generally reach their prime until they are in their fifties. Even so, Scacchetti has completed a considerable number of buildings, interiors and furniture designs enough to present a convincing criticai résumé of his work. Scacchetti sees each project as a vehicle for testing out his theories — an approach which creates a coherent thread running through ali his work. His architecture is based on a clear set of rules yet only finds its true identity when it is developed through the actuai process of building and when it is reacting to the environment around it. Each stage in the design process, drawing, detailing and use of materials is seen as a clearly defined investigation. Although Scacchetti describes his work as conformist, a study of his latest works reveals a marked progression of ideas. His early work owes much to Aldo Rossi — using basic geometrie elements to build up the whole. This also has its roots in the 18th century manner of using classical ianguage in new and originai arrangements. The second phase of his work shows a move towards a simpler, less decorated form of modem classicism, as in his fagade for a building in Corso Garibaldi and for several apartments in Milan, and for the Schòner Wohnen shop in Zurich. The elegant exteriors are reminiscent of the work of Loos but are recognizably Milanese, related to the neoclassica! blocks which present a simple exterior but disguise luxuriant courtyards and gardens within. Paolo Portoghesi describes a house restored by Scacchetti as being of a "typical conventional Milanese" style, which is "enlightened, neoclassica! and European". Inside, the buildings are more complex. The Ianguage of the exterior is repeated and is part of a consistent approach which embraces architecture, interior and product design. Scacchetti creates settings that suggest the sublime, dreams and mystery within a rational order that is both emotional and intellectual.
The most recent phase of Scacchetti's work includes a number of major projeets where he broadens his architectural vocabulary to embrace practically the entire history of architecture. Even modem architecture becomes a part of his repertoire of forms, as does the industriai architecture of 19th century Chicago. Stronger emphasis is placed on context, establishing a complex and varied urban narrative in contrast to the homogeneous Ianguage of the Classical city. Scacchetti continues to develop his architectural Ianguage building designs from a range of repeatable elements that form the "dictionary" for his work. Despite this rational approach Scacchetti places great importance on the concept of mystery, of the unexplainable, which in the 18th century was thought to be the essence of architecture. Vanni Pasca
