THE HUMAN ADVENTURE

ACKNOWLEDGEMENT OF COUNTRY TEDxPerth acknowledges the Wadjuk people of the Noongar Nation, the traditional custodians of the land on which the city of Perth and metropolitan region is located. We recognise their continuing connection to the land, waters and community of this area and pay our respects to their elders past, present and emerging. It is an honour for us to be meeting here today.

MAKE THE MOST OF YOUR DAY

PUT YOUR SCREENS AWAY We love our technology, but the TEDxPerth speakers are worth your attention. Screens are distractions for you and those around you. To preserve an immersive experience, we ask you to silence your mobile phones when in the hall and leave devices in your bag. If you wish to tweet or blog during the event, please sit in the back rows of the hall.

ASK FOR HELP IF YOU NEED IT If you have any questions or problems, visit the registration desk or ask anyone wearing a TEDxPerth shirt.

VISIT PARTNER SPACES TEDxPerth is possible thanks to the commitment of our wonderful partners. Take time during the breaks to visit their spaces, thank them for their support and have a conversation around their ‘ideas worth spreading’.

TALK TO SOMEONE NEW The TEDxPerth audience is every bit as extraordinary as our speakers. Serendipitous encounters here can lead to new perspectives, friendships and collaborations. You never know what a new connection might lead to!

SHARE YOUR EXPERIENCE WITH OTHERS If you blog, take photos or tweet, help us spread the word by using the #TEDxPerth hashtag. Take photos (please, no flash inside) and share your experiences with friends and family.

VISIT OUR INSTALLATIONS All the installations, across the different levels of Perth Concert Hall, have been carefully chosen and organised to bring you fresh ideas and perspectives. Please pay them a visit – you will find some pleasant surprises!

A television presenter, producer and MC, Julia has worked in the media industry for a number of years with WINTV, Telethon, RTRFM and most recently as a presenter for Channel 7’s lifestyle show Home in WA.

He arrived in Perth in 2012 and has been involved with TEDxPerth from the start, first as Speaker Coach and Host and, since May 2018, as our CEO. YOUR CURATORS ROB LINES LEAD CURATOR

JOEL MILLER CURATOR AND LICENSEE

Joel believes today’s most pressing issues are best tackled with great design and a culture of empathy. A product designer/engineer and co-founder of the current TEDxPerth creative team, he studied mechanical engineering and psychology at the University of Western Australia.

SUZANNE WALDRON CURATOR

EMMA GIBBENS CURATOR

Emma is a political campaigner by trade and has built grassroots movements in communities across the world. She believes every person has a story to share, and feels honoured to apply her curiosity to find ideas worth spreading.

ROSIE COOPER CURATOR Rosie coordinates the Graduate Program for the WA Department of Health through the Institute for Health Leadership. Her personal mission is to build and empower the next generation of leaders and forge opportunities for collaboration across the public sector.

WE’RE ALL IN THIS TOGETHER

Change is hard. Change is scary. Change is necessary. Today we come together to join a global movement, helping Perth and WA celebrate remarkable home-grown achievements and to dig deep into the challenges we face. But we recognise that actions always speak loudest. As individuals, and as a community, we know that we change the world by changing ourselves. So, today, we are all challenged to make a commitment to ourselves: not just to think differently, but to live differently. Today is a great day to start. You are surrounded by likeminded people who, like you, passionately believe that things can be better. So find your tribe, make plans and take action. Whatever you commit to today, do it proudly and do it publicly. Your commitment will inspire others to do the same. Our human adventure begins today.

FOOD STORY Eating is a huge part of our lives; it is not possible for us to live without the sustenance that food gives us. However, consuming food is no longer just about its necessity for survival: there are tangles of memories and senses to be stimulated and different parts of the world to be explored from your plate. We hear the term foodie used to describe people that love food but, in reality, we are all foodies. Our unique likes, dislikes, allergies and dietary requirements make us the individual foodies that we are.

Today we want to take you on an adventure, something a little mysterious and play a little game. Morning tea, lunch and afternoon tea all have a theme – perhaps you can spot it? As you enjoy the culinary offerings of the day between each session, we hope it fuels your own adventure for the day – meeting someone new, asking a burning question, connecting with a familiar face – whatever adventure means for you!

KABIR RAMASARY FOOD CURATOR Kabir is a foodie at heart. Learning to bake with his mum at a very young age encouraged him to continue cooking as a teenager and adult. If he is not out tasting the best Perth has to offer, you will often find him in the kitchen cooking for friends and most likely sharing the worst dad jokes you have ever heard.

DESIGN STORY We are all on an adventure in one form or another. Whether that means discovering a new coffee shop in a new neighbourhood, climbing Mount Everest, taking the plunge and starting a business or even learning a new language. Adventure means something different to everyone. But one thing’s for sure, it’s an experience that’s shared by all of us throughout our whole lives on many different levels. The word adventure sparks thoughts of physical triumph, exploration and

achievement. What often doesn’t spring to mind are the escapades our own thoughts and feelings take us on every single day. This year’s visual identity expresses The Human Adventure by highlighting the connection between the physical form and the cognitive or emotional essence of being human. There are a series of illustrations, each one symbolising a trait that makes us uniquely us. So look closely, tilt your head to the side, scratch your chin and see if you can figure out the story each illustration tells.

DANIEL JACKSON DESIGNER Daniel is an experienced designer, creative director and brand strategist. He has worked with a wide range of brands, businesses and organisations from across the globe. He now runs a creative agency in Perth after making the move from the UK three years ago.

THE HUMAN ADVENTURE

SESSION ONE

DANIEL MIDGLEY Daniel is a linguist and science communicator, with deep ties to language education. Daniel can be found teaching linguistics at the University of Western Australia, where for years he has trained future teachers with the grammar knowledge they need to elevate grammar literacy among their students. His latest project is the development of a high school linguistics curriculum, in conjunction with secondary teacher Amy Ward. Since 2009, Daniel has been a presenter on the RTRFM podcast Talk the Talk, a show about linguistics – the science of language. From its humble beginnings as a short, weekly segment, the show has expanded into an hour-long show of its own, with listeners all around the globe. It counts linguists and non-linguists among its fans.

Photography by Richard Watson

Daniel is also the voice of the Speakeasy on ABC Perth Radio with Breakfast hosts Nadia Mitsopoulos and Russell Woolf. He takes language and grammar questions live from an engaged (and occasionally enraged) radio audience. He is the proud father of four delightful children: two fine adult men, and two little girls. The two youngest are currently contributing data to Daniel’s informal study of child language acquisition.

JESSAMINE SODERSTROM A self-professed nerd with a desire for a sedate life in an adrenaline-fuelled environment, Jessamine is an Emergency Physician and Clinical Toxicologist at Royal Perth Hospital and a Clinical Toxicologist with the National Poisons Network. She has been privileged to work with an amazing team of researchers and clinicians, taking the seed of an idea and developing it into the project it is now. It is the recognition and respect of each other’s strengths and qualities that have enabled an environment where innovation can thrive.

Photography by Andrew Kilburn

The aim over the next few years is to foster relationships between the Poisons Centre, sentinel hospitals and forensics laboratories around the country with the view of developing an early warning system around drugs of abuse. She is a single mum of two boys with a devoted extended family who enable her to juggle family life and the joys of the intellectual challenge of her work. Her family is her anchor in a world of chaos and gives perspective of what is truly important.

PARYS X

Parys X is a music producer, speaker and visual artist. He has performed and spoken to over 35,000 people across Australia and has been featured in The West Australian, Business News and on Channel 9. Born and raised in Perth, the only child of an artist and fashion designer, he grew up around creativity. Through his teen years he got heavily caught up in drugs and crime and ended up in prison just before the age of 21. Whilst in prison he came to the realisation that if he didn’t change the direction of his life he would either end up dead or back inside.

Photography by Andrew Kilburn

He then spent the next five years re-educating himself, developing his creativity, fixing destroyed relationships and changing his perspective on the world. In all that he does he aims to uplift and inspire people to see the capacity that they hold within themselves to re-write their own story and to consciously create whatever life they want for themselves.

MARCELLE RILEY Marcelle sees the power of using her Noongar culture as a way of healing, both for herself and for others. She works as a Noongar Artist running workshops all over WA, using her skills in doll-making, weaving and eco-dyeing. She was born in Moora and grew up in the small country town of Pingelly on her mother’s country, and now lives in Narrogin with her father’s family. Her journey had highs and lows and, along the path, she made her own story doll. Marcelle now facilitates others to make their own story dolls, usually from cloth dyed using the local

PAUL ISKOV After growing up in Perth, Paul followed his passion for surfing and moved south. He worked on a friend’s farm until the work ran out, which is when he started working at a nearby restaurant. He thought it was the perfect job as he could surf during the day and work at night. Over the next few years he finished his cooking apprenticeship and ended up back in Perth at Restaurant Amuse, under chef Hadley Troy. This is where he really fell in love with cooking. Whilst at Restaurant Amuse, he did a few stints over East and, in 2012, decided to embark on a yearlong global journey, where he had the opportunity to work in some of the world’s most acclaimed kitchens, such as D.O.M (Sao Paolo), COI (San Francisco), Pujol (Mexico City) and Noma (Copenhagen).

Photography by Steve Marijanich

During his year abroad, he often pondered the question of why we aren’t using more Australian ingredients? Surely, they must be out there? So, after a year of in-depth learning and research, he returned to Australia inspired to learn more. And thus, his quest for a deeper understanding began. Paul established Fervor in 2013 with several aims: to respectfully learn about food of the world’s oldest living culture, to educate diners about native food and to provide a ‘culinary experience you can’t get anywhere else’. Since 2013, Fervor has toured northern Western Australia and, in 2017, it expanded to include the Northern Territory. Paul published his first cookbook, Fervor, in 2018.

JACQUELINE ALDERSON Jacqueline has always been curious about movement – whether it be helping surgeons make best practice decisions for their patients, helping AFL and Australian Hockey players avoid knee injuries, or advising the International Cricket Council on who might be “chucking” – you’ll find her somewhere close with a camera. She holds a Bachelor of Science with first class honours and a PhD in biomechanics and is currently an Associate Professor of biomechanics at the University of Western Australia and an Adjunct Professor of human performance and innovation technology at Auckland University of Technology. DANAIL OBRESCHKOW Danail is passionate about science outreach – his Cosmic Eye video has been watched over 200 million times and shared over a million times. Born and raised in Switzerland, Danail discovered his love for science tinkering with every electronic item in his reach and stargazing with his dad. He later studied physics at the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology Lausanne and the Carnegie Mellon University in Pittsburgh. After completing his master’s degree on quantum information theory, he was awarded a Berrow Foundation scholarship for doctoral studies at Oxford, where he obtained his Doctor of Philosophy in astrophysics in 2009. Danail then briefly interrupted his academic career to develop clean energy solutions in the private sector.

In 2011, he joined the University of Western Australia node of the International Centre for Radio Astronomy Research as a full-time astrophysicist to conduct fundamental research related to the Square Kilometre Array (SKA) project. His professional interests lie in the evolution of galaxies and the cosmic large-scale structure. Danail also has a heart for flying and spaceflight. He obtained his private pilot license during his doctoral studies and has been regularly involved in experimental research in microgravity with the European Space Agency since 2004. He has flown on eleven suborbital microgravity flights aboard the A300 zero-g, each offering about twelve minutes of microgravity. Privately, he enjoys spending time with his family, climbing and hiking, playing music and, occasionally, dancing a bit of salsa.

In 2018 Craig participated in the Tham Luang cave rescue of 13 people in Thailand. For his contribution he was awarded the Star of Courage and the Medal of the Order of Australia. He has been named as the 2019 Australian of the Year jointly with his longstanding dive partner Richard Harris.

KIRSTY PRATT Driven by an overactive sense of justice, Kirsty has been an advocate and political activist in support of survivors of childhood sexual abuse for many years. She now applies these reforms in her role as specialist Law Clerk for local law firm Bradley Bayly Legal, bringing justice to abuse survivors. Her team at Bradley Bayly has been awarded for “always sticking up for the little guy” and through this work, she once briefly shared a podium with fellow Law Clerk, Erin Brockovich. Kirsty’s passion is the survivor voice. She wants to change the public discourse around childhood sexual abuse: to focus less on the predators, redirecting the narrative to how we can support survivors.

With a strong connection to her community, Kirsty is active in voluntary roles on various committees and is the long-term foundation chair of a local school board. In leadership, she is passionate about honest, respectful communication and evidence-based decision-making. SESSION FOUR

OWEN MERRIMAN & MICHAEL GATT Michael has spent his adult life in the pursuit of creativity. From graphic design, to art facilitation, artistic direction and even a short-lived stint on radio, Michael’s happy place is when he is able to take an idea from the depths of his imagination and bring it to life, whether it be an advertising campaign, a redesign of a broken lamp or a Fringe Show. Owen suffers from a terminal affliction of reckless optimism. Saying yes to more things than practically possible has led him to a vast array of extracurricular activities. From elite-level obscure sports, to politics, to air guitar championships, to hosting Q&As with astronauts.

Photography by Andrew Kilburn

Owen and Michael have been friends since their early twenties. Although focusing on different careers, they discovered a shared passion and excitement for creative outlets and bringing projects and ideas to life. Over the years, they have collaborated on a string of “creative side-hustles”, from stand-up comedy, to charity events, to an app they thought would rival YouTube. In 2017, after an absence of working on projects together and while living in other cities, they decided to reignite the creativeside-project spirit and create a Fringe show.

PANKAJ SHARMA Perth was not a planned location for Pankaj to settle down when he and his wife moved from Mumbai in 2013. However, the beautiful laid-back lifestyle of Perth mesmerised them after their super-hectic lifestyle in Mumbai. They now call Perth their Karmabhoomi, a Sanskrit word which loosely translates to Your Place of Action. Pankaj has worked for some of the biggest multinational media and advertising companies in India, most recently with a film production company where he was part of more than 30 Bollywood movies.

In 2015 he and his wife Kim started Toast My Curry as their version of Karma: Do good to do good and not to expect anything back. Toast My Curry was thus born as a social impact enterprise using the model of Buy One – Give One. For each sale, they donate a meal to support the education of street kids in Mumbai. They hope to take this social enterprise, and their project, around the world.

NATASHA HURLEY-WALKER TEDXPERTH 2016 TALK: SEEING THE SKY WITH RADIO EYES

Natasha Hurley-Walker’s remarkable talk delighted our audience with the world-first look at her true-colour, high-resolution radio picture of our universe. Her talk went on to global recognition and has now been viewed over 1.3 million times. Sometimes I’ll say “yes” to things, and not worry too much about them. They are for “Future Natasha” to deal with. Most weeks I think to myself: “Past Natasha has a lot to answer for!” In 2016 I was speaking about astronomy to a local crowd; in the friendly chat afterwards, a TEDx talent scout asked me if I had ever considered speaking at TEDxPerth. A few weeks later, I gave The World’s Least Rehearsed TED Talk to the TEDxPerth curators. Despite the talk’s lack of any discernible narrative structure, and my nervous swaying habit that Rob, the Lead Curator, charitably described as “like a swinging pendulum”, they saw a gem of promise. A few rehearsals later, and they told me I’d be opening the event. And a few rehearsals after that, I found myself walking on stage in front of 1,700 expectant people and thinking: “Past Natasha seriously has a lot to answer for!” Fast-forward two years and I’d say Past Natasha had exactly the right idea. Speaking at TEDxPerth has increased my passion for outreach: I’ve taken on numerous

public speaking opportunities such as bringing astronomy to the Scinapse festival in Geraldton, talking to high schoolers about careers in STEM at Science Cafe, and discussing at the WA State Library’s Disrupted Festival how astronomy and sustainability intersect, and at four events during National Science Week 2019. My engagement work has led to being named the 2017 WA Young Tall Poppy Scientist of the Year, an ABC Top 5 Scientist in 2018, and a Superstar of STEM in 2019. A followup interview to my TEDxPerth talk aired on National Public Radio and I’ve received emails from listeners all across the world. I’ve heard from school children who have seen my talk and built their own radio telescopes, and artists inspired by my visuals to create new works. The images themselves have been projected into planetariums, science museums, and even cathedrals. Last year the BBC came calling, and we filmed a special “Outback Astronomy” for the world’s longest-running TV show, The Sky at Night. I’m proud to share my passion with the world. The talk shows people one of the most beautiful works of astronomy I’ve ever made, and has been translated into 20 languages, reaching people all over the world. I’m really glad I signed Future Natasha up to walk on to the TEDxPerth stage, as I knew she would step up to the challenge.

JOSHUA PORTLOCK TEDXPERTH 2018 TALK: ELECTRIC AEROPLANES MAY BE CLOSER THAN YOU THINK. HERE’S WHY.

Last year Josh Portlock amazed the audience with a vision of environmentallyfriendly flight using super-efficient, electrically-powered, ducted air propulsion. Since sharing my vision and passion for a sustainable aviation future at TEDxPerth in 2019, the additional exposure and awareness of my mission has helped our team accelerate our electric aircraft development activities. It also gave me greater confidence to push forward and commit even more of my time to Electro.Aero. This contributed to raising capital from one of Australia’s most successful tech entrepreneurs, Dr David Warren, co-founder of multi-billion-dollar ASX listed electronics design software company Alitum Ltd.

Josh riding WaveFlyer

I also connected with some great people during and after the event, including our now lead Digital Designer Naomi Gunton. Naomi made a very positive comment on social media after my talk, which caught my attention enough to invite her in for an interview to join our team. Naomi shares our environmentally conscious mindset and can relate to our passion to make a positive difference with our technology. Naomi and I wouldn’t have known we were such a good fit to work together if it weren’t for TEDxPerth. Richard Watson is another great team member who I met from him editing my TEDxPerth talk for YouTube. Not only did he do a great job with editing the talk, but he also expressed interest in working with us and has been a great contributor to our

team and mission since. It is rare to find an electrical engineer who has such good videography skills, making Richard extremely versatile while we’re still a growing team. One of the most exciting developments is that we have expanded our electric propulsion technology focus from aircraft to watercraft. We applied our knowledge of electronic systems and fluid dynamics to develop the world’s first personal watercraft with an actively stabilised hydrofoil electric propulsion system, that we call the WaveDrive. The hull can lift up above the waves while the propulsion system flies underneath the water, reducing the power consumption by up to 75%. This means either four times more endurance, batteries four times smaller, twice the speed for

a given power, or some combination of all three benefits. We believe our WaveDrive propulsion technology will revolutionise watercraft, because it is completely silent, extremely efficient, produces no emissions and gives the amazing sensation of smoothly flying over the water.

STEVE WILTON TEDXPERTH 2016 TALK: CAN A DRUG CURE A GENETIC DISEASE?

Professor Steve Wilton spoke at TEDxPerth 2016 about his life’s work developing a world-first therapy for Duchenne muscular dystrophy. This muscle-wasting disease almost exclusively affects boys, giving an average life-expectancy of 26. The title of my talk was Can a drug cure a genetic disease? and the answer has to be an unequivocal NO! The treatment developed for Duchenne muscular dystrophy was never expected to be a cure, but if you ask “is it making a difference in slowing disease progression?” the answer is YES! Since the US Federal Drug Authority (FDA) gave accelerated approval in September 2016, the drug Eteplirsen has become available to hundreds of children in the USA and there are trials all over the world, including Australia. Although this is a firstgeneration drug, there are remarkable stories of boys and young men living longer and doing things that had been very difficult or impossible a year or two before treatment. One such young man, Billy, was an early recipient. Now aged 18, Billy graduated from his senior high school in June this year, confidently ascending and descending the ramp onto the stage to collect his diploma.

According to statistics, Billy should have stopped walking around 11 years of age. One of the many challenges with this type of personalized medicine is that the drug has to be tailored to the specific spelling errors in the dystrophin gene that causes Duchenne muscular dystrophy. Eteplirsen is applicable to about 13% of patients and two other “gene patches” directed at different mutations are in advanced Phase 3 trials: the FDA is expected to hand down their decision on Golodirsen this year and a new drug application for Casimersen should be submitted before year’s end. While it is incredibly gratifying seeing the differences being made with the boys and young men receiving these compounds, there is still so much to do: improve the potency and efficiency of these first-generation drugs and roll out more compounds to treat as many different Duchenne muscular dystrophycausing mutations as possible. We anticipate that some of the rarer mutations will respond better than those in the immediate clinical pipeline, but this will require fundamental shifts in trial design and regulatory approval. The future is certainly going to be very busy.

ALICIA CURTIS TEDXPERTH 2017 TALK: YOU CAN BE A PHILANTHROPIST TOO!

Alicia Curtis’ 2017 TEDxPerth talk showed that by aggregating their resources, even people of modest means could achieve great things.

philanthropy is unattainable to the everyday individual and showcase the incredible impact you can have when smaller donations are pooled together with a common purpose.

It’s been an exciting two years for 100 Women since I spoke about the power of everyday philanthropists. It was such an honour to start a conversation about philanthropy and share how we founded a collective giving movement that ignites women as philanthropists while funding high-impact projects supporting women and girls, locally and globally.

The feedback from my talk was really encouraging. People were touched by the grant projects we’ve funded and the ripple effects they created. Best of all, it inspired people to action – men and women – who joined 100 Women and people who have come to our events and shared the idea of collective giving with their own communities. We couldn’t be happier with the response!

While it was a little nerve-wracking walking out onto the famous red dot on the Concert Hall stage, I needn’t have worried, the audience was so warm and encouraging. My aim was to change the perception that

TEDxPerth is an important amplifier of great ideas in Western Australia. The diversity of ideas and presenters, as well as the atmosphere and community it creates, is such a gift for our State. In these times of

increasing polarity and even loneliness, we need to keep cultivating spaces for discussion, community and connection. TEDxPerth holds a very special place in 100 Women’s history. The TED talk is a conversation starter, it gives us a platform to enhance the credibility of our idea. It opens doors, it invites people to find out more and it connects us with a community of change makers. 100 Women continues to expand, we keep building our membership, enhancing our governance and we have plans to grow across Australia. Thank you TEDxPerth for helping us share our ideas!
