1. Introduction a) Author’s Background/ Mindframe Page | 4

Chris Sharples- Founder of ShoP

SHoP, is made up of initials by Christopher Sharples and William Sharples, the twins; Coren Sharples, William’s wife, and Kimberly Holden and Greg Pasquarelli, the couple. They believe that architecture should include history, culture, politics, finance and technology as their backgrounds varied. (Polsky, S, 2014) b) Locality, Time and Socio-Political Condition SHoP Architects firm was founded in 1966 near City Hall in Lower Manhattan, New York. (Cornachio, J, 2018) Despite the norm of defying the close mixture of art and commerce, SHoP believed the otherwise as they thought design flourished with the constraints of money as it requires great problemsolving skills. (Interview: Gregg Pasquarelli, 2018) c) Triggering Events/ Ideal Genesis “Interview: Gregg Pasquarelli” (2018) mentioned that SHoP use versioning to explain the expansion of potentials towards design using the means of technology with computer-aided technology to solve manpower and budget problems.

2. Manifesto a) Core Ideology & spill over ideologies Breaking away from the conventional rendering or elevation approach, SHoP applies technology, Page | 5 computer-aided technology (CAD) and digital fabrication, to explain the flourishing and sustainable design (Polsky, S, 2014) and utilizes problems as the turning point for a better design. (2018 Middle East Conference - Gregg Pasquarelli “Beauty & Finance: Post Mannerism in Skyscrapers.”, 2019)

b) Illustrations/diagrams to explain the ideals CNC Technology & Fabrication of structure

Figure 1: CNC Cutting Machine

Figure 2: Fabrication lab

Figure 3: Subtractive Manufacturing

Klinger, K. R., & Vermillion, J. (2006) said that SHoP replaces the stereotype of using traditional 2D drawings with 3D exploded computer model generated diagrams to describe the location of assemblage in assisting the building construction.

Figure 8 & 9: Live copper design on building façade

American Copper Building is two towers on East Side of Manhattan on a difficult master plan with a sky bridge connecting them by mechanical equipment. With little budget, SHoP used live copper design on the building façade. Users find the waterfront views amazing and many rented skyline views.

111 West 57th Street, uses CNC technology to fabricate the Terracotta plaster of 26 shapes in 6 different cream colours on its facades that looks like a rotating terracotta up the spire with LEDs embedded inside. Serving as a rain screen system, the flat bronze filigree is sighted curved on the glass curtain wall, that makes people admire the merging of contemporary and historical elements together.

3. Critical Commentary a) After effect of manifesto SHoP has undoubtedly become the award-winning architecture firm with its beliefs on utilising 3D and digital fabrication to construct a prominent building, convincing the conventional critics to accept the fast-changing technology into part of their architecture projects. b) Your thought/opinion on the ideals I really admire SHoP’s forseen vision into replacing conventional architecture drawings into using 3D accurate visualisation to bring the architecture design to another level with much better efficiency. c) Conclusion Be wise with utilising technology to break the limits in architecture and design and take consideration into creating sustainable yet aesthetic buildings that appeals to everyone.

TOWN- COUNTRY

1. Avoid the downfalls of industrial cities

Garden City Ideology

2. Break the stronghold of capitalism and lead to cooperative socialism

4. Reorganised with networks of garden cities

“A town designed for healthy living and industry; of a size that makes possible of full measure of social life; but not larger; surrounded by a rural belt; the whole of the land being in public ownership or held in trust for community

3. Free of slums

Garden City Movement Purpose of Garden City: completely reform the capitalist urban form

1. Accommodate 32,000 people 2. 6000 acres. (2400 hectares) 3. Planned on a concentric pattern with open spaces, public parks and six radial boulevards, 120 ft (37m wide, extending from the centre. 4. The garden city would be self-sufďŹ cient and when it reached full population, another garden city would be developed nearby. 5. Howard envisages a cluster of several garden cities as satellites of a central of 58,000 people, linked by road and rail. 6. To reduce smoke and dust pollution in cities, electricity must be used as a power source, and municipal waste should be used in agriculture. 7. Various factories, warehouses, and markets are built in the outermost area of the city. 8. One side faces the outermost ring road and the other side is a ring-shaped railway branch line, so transportation is very convenient.

ASSIGNMENT 3 FINAL ESSAY (40%) CRAZY RICH ASIANS

CONTEMPORARY DESIGN THEORY | DST 60304

TEE HUI QING | 0334497 | 2320 words

INTRODUCTION

“Crazy Rich Asians” is a 2018 American rom-com film directed by Jon M. Chu. This motion pictures talks about how an American-Chinese, Rachel Chu, faces the challenges of dealing with her boyfriend, Nick Young’s wealthy family background when she followed him to his best friend, Colin’s wedding in Singapore. The truth was only revealed when she went to visit her college friend, Peik Lin. As Rachel tried to impose a good impression when Nick introduced

her

to

his

family,

Eleanor,

Nick’s

mother

especially,

was

upset

with

her

appearance and told her privately that she will never be enough for the family. At the bachelorette party, her room was vandalized as she was deemed as a gold-digger. Despite the circumstances, Rachel bravely confronted Eleanor that if one day Nick eventually marries someone who lives up to her standards, it will be because of her selfless love for Nick, a girl she looked down on, who made that happen. In the end, Rachel and Nick received the blessings from Eleanor and earned her respect.

This movie is really inspiring in terms of the movie sets as it plays a broad range over Chinese traditional cultural elements, art nouveau, modern sleek to nature landscaping which are revealed to be just in our own country, Malaysia and Singapore as well. The message of the movie was delivered well as it reveals how one’s bravery and love can surpass money and fame despite one's maipulation and oppression over people from lower class background through his power of money.

CHARACTERS AND CHARACTERISTICS

SCOPE AND BACKGROUND STUDIES The movie sets were filmed in both Malaysia and Singapore as the plot in the novel was mainly starring at Singapore itself. As the Young’s family is portrayed one of the richest in Singapore where their affluence was accumulated since the Young’s ancestors’ making in China, it is definitely desirable to pick locations that best show the cultural elements in the interior spaces, such as the Cheong Fatt Tze Mansion and Tyersall Park.

CRITICAL COMMENTARY Given the need to showcase the powerful and richness in Young's culture, the backdrop at Tyersall Park has to be perfect at the Peranakan culture detailings. Usage of Blue-green porcelain, patterned rugs/tiles and chinese paintings of former warriors/sceneries are a must to depict the characteristics of Peranakan architecture. This can be clearly seen during the Tan Hua blooming occassion and Jiao Zi making scene where the usage of art nouveau furniture to the jade emerald green paint on the stairs and walls is utilised to give off its symmetrical and grandeur interior design.

Moreover, luxury can also be portrayed in bringing mother nature into the architecture itself. In order to create a '40 million' wedding for the Khoo couple, props and settings like the lush greeneries, vibrant flowers and asupicious lanterns transform the ancient chapel into a huge and extravagant garden wedding. The idea of flowing the water down the aisle create a momentary effect that make the audiences' jaw drop, along with the 'butterfly' lights in the dark hall. The ultimacy of beauty comes not from flamboyant decor but the perfect blend of nature itself.

Last but not least, the film set does not only restrict towards cultural architecture elements, but also widen the audience's eyes by showing how this movie takes a further step up in contemporary modern design. Open space in the midst of forest; private pool beside the pavillion, tall and wide glass facades as well as staircases turn the residence into a mini villa that all the wow factors in its wallpaper texture, mixture of wood and stone finishes, height in ceilings as well as exposure to natural sunlight and fresh air from the woods.

In conclusion, “Crazy Rich Asians” is a well portrayed movie that played with a variety set of architecture styles which best represents the rich culture of the Asian Chinese and also the modern architecture as a contrast to depict the families’ affluence by having their homes designed in the same avant-garde size in spite of its difference in styles.
