Ed's Note Hi everyone,

LOVING THIS MONTH:

I was never a particularly active person. Aside

from the mandatory P.E. lessons in

In the spirit of wearing all things sporty, I love the Cameo The Label Acoustic Jacket ($160) from fashionbunker.com. The utilitarian pockets paired with sports trimmings make it a versatile jacket to dress up a simple jersey dress or hide the clothes I’ve been exercising in.

school, I don’t think I’ve ever taken part in any

sports. All is well and dandy – I didn’t have to

worry about my weight and health… that is until I hit my late 20s.

I started noticing that my body doesn’t work as efficiently at burning calories, even

though I’m consuming the same amount

I have really chapped lips and it’s a hassle to wear lip colour, so I have to ensure that there’s always a layer of lip balm to smoothen out the dry lines. I love the new Clinique Pop Lip Colour + Primer ($33) as it nourishes lips with shea and murumuru butter, while giving it a pop of colour that lasts all day.

of food. I get lethargic easily and rely a lot

on coffee to perk myself up. At the same time, I see my peers looking and feeling better than ever. What’s their secret? A combination of

exercise and healthy eating.

Living a healthy lifestyle is easier said than done, but there’s really no better time to start than ‘now’. Hence, for the month of April, we’ve put together a manual for healthy living – from sussing out the healthiest (and yummiest!) eateries in Singapore (p. 16),

sourcing stylish clothes that can take you

from school to the gym (p. 38), and even putting ourselves through a three-day juice cleanse just to let you know if it’s worth the hype (p. 78). If you still have difficulty taking the first step, cut out the fitness inspiration

quotes (p. 85) and stick them somewhere prominent to motivate you. We’ll be here to cheer you on too! All the best,

THE LAB SG 1 JALAN PISANG, SINGAPORE 199069 Enter an industrial, lab-inspired lair that pays homage to Breaking Bad. Think condiments stored in dropper bottles, Instagram-worthy drinks served with cheeky syringes, and staff disguised as ‘scientists’ who conjure different concoctions each day. Don’t be fooled by their seemingly-decadent European fare – aside from the sweet potato fries, this halal-certified gem bans deepfrying from the menu, with everything else either baked or grilled. For Walter White fans, we recommend the power pairing of the Heisenberger ($12.90) and Heisenberg sparkler ($6)… for now, as the menu’s set to change every six to eight months. Don’t know about you, but we’re crossing our fingers for Jesse Pinkman-themed noms the next round.

Who says healthy food can’t be delicious? These quirky, guilt-free eateries will tempt even the staunchest carnivores around.

CHEF ICON 5 KAMPONG BAHRU ROAD, SINGAPORE 169341

We didn’t think it’s possible for ‘healthy’ and ‘desserts’ to coexist in one sentence, until we had a taste of Chef Icon’s honest-to-goodness treats. This half-bakery, half-cafe operates on the belief that “good food makes people happy”, with a careful selection of homemade sandwiches, burgers and cakes crafted from strictly natural ingredients. We chomped down the Yakiniku Mushroom Burger ($8.80) thinking it’s made with juicy shreds of beef when it’s actually vegan – props to the chef for satisfying the meatlover in us. Cap off your meal with the signature Chef Pie ($8.80), which packs in layers of pistachio, macadamia, green tea and assorted fruits.

THE LAWN 8 SHENTON WAY, #B1-11 AXA TOWER, SINGAPORE 068811 As the first and only specialty grill and salad cafe in town, The Lawn’s out to bust the stereotype of salads being boring heaps of lettuce. The beauty of it all is the create-your-own-salad concept, which allows us to personalise our meals the way we like it – our sumptuous platter of olive rice with chicken breast and side salad costs only $11.90. Or you can avoid the hassle and go for tried-and-true combos like Sweet & Chic ($12.90), a colourful bowl of maple-infused meats and pasta over a bed of crisp greens. There’s also the takeaway option for meals on the go.

DearKelly Dear readers, Things are getting serious. I will highlight court cases, so pass the information on to your siblings and friends who don’t read my column. Readers know kids are at risk when they explore the online highway. The newspapers regularly carry reports of sex predators targeting minors (a person under the age of full legal responsibility) who are flattered, curious, intimidated or tricked into sexual encounters. It is worse when kids are targeted by adults they know. Several sex predators have been jailed. Unfortunately, many are not caught and they continue to abuse minors. This is why reading this column is important. Regularly, readers write to share their horrible experiences and advice is given to victims. Don’t be a victim! Learn from the experiences of others. A case that shocked the judiciary and caught the attention of concerned politicians and the public was the trial of a man who had sexual encounters with 31 underage boys. Shockingly, he committed 76 different sexual acts on boys between the ages of 11 and 15. This vile adult chatted about sexual matters and convinced boys to meet him and he sexually abused them until one kid made a police report. If it wasn’t for this boy, I shudder to think how many more kids would have been abused and for how long.

What horrifies me is teachers sexually abusing pupils. There have been several cases of both male and female teachers making sexual contact with their underage pupils. One discipline master was

convicted of molesting his pupil aged 12. The judge said the 20-year age gap made the offence more “reprehensible”. In another case, a teacher became intimate with a kid after an overseas trip.

1

Sexual penetration of a minor

under 16 is an offence even if the minor has given consent. This includes both male and female minors. Sex consists of sexual penetration and it includes vaginal, oral or anal sex.

Commercial sex (paying for sex)

Children 13 or younger are targeted by teachers of both sexes. The cases brought before the courts involve samesex and male-female sexual encounters between teachers and innocent kids, some in primary school.

2

In another case, a pastor was charged with having sex with 15-year old girl in a public car park and having oral sex within church premises. Totally

(a) If the offender is above 21 years,

he may claim, as a defence, that he mistakenly believed the minor was not underage, but only if the minor is of the opposite sex and the offender has not previously committed similar sexual offences.

There was the case of a kid being invited for a swim, then molested in the showers in a same sex encounter. Be careful readers!

with a minor under the age of 18 is a punishable offence.

NOTE: The common protest is: “I didn’t know she was underage”. he cannot claim as a defence, that he believed the minor was not underage.

(b) If the offender is below 21 years,

Rape, in Singapore, is committed when a man has sexual intercourse with a female without her consent. Sex is also rape when the victim is a girl under the age of 14, regardless of whether she has given her consent.

Online predators are getting bolder and more inventive. A man over 40 pretended to be a teenage girl but was caught when he met the unsuspecting boy. Luckily, his parents were nearby watching.

3

Many teenage boys court minors online with the purpose of initiating sex. Some get caught – many get away with it and continue to trick inexperienced kids of both sexes into sexual activities.

4

Molest is prosecuted as the

NEWS FLASH COURT REPORT –

MAN MOLESTS TEEN IN TAXI A teen ignored a man who often asked, “How are you?” when she was on her way to school. One day she responded with, “I’m okay.” He took this opportunity to chat her up. She told him she was taking a taxi to school and he said he’d come with her as he was going near her school. He followed her into the taxi she hailed. He confessed in court that he had the urge to kiss her so he put his arm over her shoulder and pulled her closer to him. He kept asking for a kiss on the cheek but she refused. Afraid the man would move closer, she moved to kiss him on the cheek but he turned his head and kissed her on the lips. He kept asking to be kissed and she refused. Yet he kissed her again. Then he asked to touch her thighs but she refused. He put his hand on her knee even though she refused. His arm was at all times around her shoulder. When she got out of the taxi, he warned her not to tell anyone. The victim cried in school and her parents were contacted. The man was apprehended, charged and jailed for four weeks. (Adapted from The Straits Times)

He kept asking to be kissed and she refused yet he kissed her again. Readers take note: I abridged this report because it worries me what teens expose themselves to these days. Please pay attention to what I write.

1

It is OK to smile and exchange

pleasantries with people you regularly meet on the way to the bus stop or around the neighbourhood. But nothing more.

2

When the teen, who previously ignored the man, responded to his greeting, he put his plan into action. He obviously was targeting this girl. Notice – he patiently greeted her daily even though she ignored him.

3

The big mistake was allowing the man into the taxi. Why would anyone agree to let a stranger into the taxi? What happened? She was

molested in broad daylight, in a taxi with the driver present. What she should have done • Not allow a stranger into your taxi. • But after she made the mistake of letting him in, she should have asked the taxi driver to stop and told the man to get out the moment he asked for a kiss. If he refused, the girl should have alighted. This would have prevented matters from getting more sexual. • The victim should immediately have got into another taxi, gone to her parents and made a police report so the molester would be caught and charged in court.

Note: It is fortunate she cried so the school authorities found out the truth. Otherwise the molester would have got away.

Never share a taxi with a stranger regardless of sex. Kids are targeted by predators of both sexes. (Share this with siblings and friends.)
