What’s Trending? From World Cup fever to influencer drama, we keep you up to date with what the world’s been buzzing about. BY JULIA YEE
HEAD IN THE GAME The 2018 FIFA World Cup was arguably the most exciting instalment yet. Not only did we watch powerhouses like Argentina, Brazil and Germany fall out of the running, we also witnessed smaller names like Iceland, Croatia and Japan go further in the game than ever before. And it’s no doubt that we’ll be holding our breath for these teams to go head-tohead once again in 2022. Will France continue their winning streak, or will our up-andcoming underdogs cause an upset once again?
SUMMERTIME RADNESS With the summer season in full swing, athleisure is all the rage. Just because we live under the sweltering heat all year round, it doesn’t mean we can’t look stylish in our workout threads. We’re talking snazzy fanny packs, stretchy yoga pants, tropical print tanks and pastel kicks that can easily take you from a day at the gym to a night out on the town. Say what you want about this trend; athleisure is proof that you don’t need suits and stilettos to look #Lit.
NETFLIX AND CHILL One must never underestimate the struggle of resisting a good Netflix binge, and its recent releases are certainly not helping us curb our obsession – not that we’re complaining! Netflix has been serving up countless new originals that cater to virtually any mood you’re in, just in time for the holidays. Feeling a lil’ empty in the love department? Check out feel-good romcoms like The Kissing Booth and Alex Strangelove. Feeling down in the dumps? You’ll find comfort in coming-of-age series like Everything Sucks or Atypical. There’s something for everyone!

THE CREEP FACTOR 2018 has been treating horror fanatics to a delicious spook fest, with the genre’s epic resurgence giving us some of the best hair-raising works yet. Ditching on-the-nose jump scares and overused tropes, new films like A Quiet Place, Hereditary and Unfriended: Dark Web struck a painful chord in us with themes such as family, grief and the human psyche – leaving you with a chill that will last long after the final credits. Remember to look under the bed before you sleep...
LOVE IS IN THE AIR Sparks are flying all over Hollywood! From Gigi Hadid and Zayn Malik’s reunion, to Emma Watson and Chord Overstreet’s romantic rendezvous, to Ariana Grande and Pete Davidson’s surprise engagement – you could get whiplashed just trying to keep up. But the pair currently dominating headlines is none other than Justin Bieber and Hailey Baldwin, who are officially engaged after the 24-year-old popped the question during their vacation in the Bahamas. Looks like Hollywood doesn’t just inspire on-screen romance after all!
#EXPOSED Despite their strategically framed lives, it appears that the rosy lenses of your friendly neighbourhood influencers are beginning to crack. Local photographer Daryl Aiden Yow found himself facing public scrutiny after it was revealed that he passed off edited stock photos as his original works and has since issued an apology. In recent news, Hong Kong-based Instagrammer Sadelle Yeung was also caught committing the same act. On the other side of the world, Brit YouTuber Alfie Deyes was under fire for making light of poverty. In a video where we attempted to live off £1 for a day, the 24-year-old joked about not being able to afford his usual premium coffee, protein bars and filtered water – all against the backdrop of his £1.7 million mansion. Triple yikes…

Street Invasion We love our good ol’ chicken rice and laksa, but there’s nothing quite like street food to get a taste of authentic local flavours – without breaking the bank. We hustled the crowds and braved the heat in search for our favourite roadside eats. BY TRIXY AW
ROASTED WICKEDMALLOWS, $4 The Wicked Cream Co. (@thewickedcream.sg)
For those who like their marshmallows charred yet fluffy, you’ll find it hard to resist gobbling up these colourful blocks of roasted marshmallows. And you’ll be glad to know that the rainbow hues aren’t just for show – these gooey nibbles come in quirky flavours such as pink lemonade, ondeh ondeh and sea salt gula melaka.
STARLITE MILKSHAKE, $9.90 Rainbow Works (@rainbow_works_)
How gram-worthy is this strawberry bubblegum milkshake? Perfect for those with a sweet tooth, this whimsical creation is adorned with a party of marshmallows, fruity pebbles and a dollop of whipped cream – and it tastes as good as it looks. To sweeten the deal, it even comes with a balloon that lights up for extra aesthetic appeal. The unicorn lover in us approves!
14
MOZZARELLA CORN DOG, $6 MrQ Snacks (@mrqsnacks)
Inspired off the streets of Korea, this street food staple is recreated with a local flair to suit the taste buds of us fellow Singaporeans. Sink your teeth into a crunchy layer of battered breadcrumbs deep-fried to golden perfection, letting the mozzarella ooze out before taking a bite of the hot dog. Yum!
SPICY CHICKEN KOREAN NOODLES, $5 SUAP (@suapsg)
For those who fancy food with a kick, this peppery cup of Korean glass vermicelli, topped with slices of tender chicken and tossed with carrots, bell peppers and kelp, comes packed with just the right amount of spice to heat up your palate. If you’re looking for the perfect appetiser to start off your street food escapade, this is it.
SALTED EGG YOLK CHURROS, $6
TROPICAL FLAVOURED KOREAN BINGSU, $6
Loco Loco (@locolocosg)
Icy Treats (@icytreats_sg)
Food fads come and go, but if there’s one craze that’s still dominating the scene today, it’s salted egg yolk – and better yet, with a churro or two. Putting a savoury twist to the dusted sugar varieties we’re familiar with, these fluffy churros come dipped in the dangerously addictive golden sauce for a sweet and salty combo. If you’re not a fan of salted egg yolk, try out other local-inspired flavours such as durian, chilli crab and ondeh ondeh which will make you feel right at home.
Instead of your regular bowl of Korean shaved ice, this tropical delight comes with a decadent heap of sunflower seeds, cornflakes, oats and a sprinkle of matcha powder on top that wil send you straight to dessert heaven. While most bingsu cafes would pair it with a scoop of ice cream, you get a tube of ice cream soda here – which you can choose to either take a shot or drizzle over your bingsu. Taste? Check. Presentation? Check. Novelty? Check!

Hallyu Fever GET READY FOR THREE DAYS OF K-POP HYSTERIA AT HALLYUPOPFEST 2018, WHICH WILL BE ROLLING OUT THE RED CARPET FOR A STAR-STUDDED LINEUP OF BIG-NAME ACTS – FROM TAEYEON TO NCT 127 TO WANNA ONE – THIS SEPTEMBER.

Since making their explosive debut back in August, Wanna One has been on an unstoppable train to success. Which makes perfect sense why this 11-member hit machine is the star act of HallyuPopFest – fans get to witness not one, but two nights of Wanna One goodness!
BY CHEW HUI LING
The Breakout Kids
As if that’s not enough to whip K-pop fans into a frenzy, there’s also NCT 127 and UNB to get excited about. Despite being relatively new to the scene, both groups have been making a name for themselves. And they’re just getting started. WANNA ONE
UNB NCT 127

The Boys Of Tomorrow
YU SEUNGWOO
These two have plenty in common: vocals to die for, superb composing chops, heartthrob-worthy looks. Both stellar performers in their own right, Sewoon and Seungwoo got their start on singing competitions K-pop Star and Superstar K4 respectively before landing record deals with Starship. Although we half-expected them to be part of a new boy group or even a duo, we’re glad these talented lads are given the spotlight to truly shine on their own.

There’s no doubting that these solo acts have the ability to hold their own on stage – just their vocals alone are able to easily command the entire stadium. If the names of OST goddesses Soyou and Heize aren’t enough to win you over, don’t forget there’s also the reigning king and queen of balladry, Huh Gak and Taeyeon, in our midst. Adding on to the stellar roster is Korean-American singer Eric Nam, who will not only be blessing the crowd with his new tunes but taking on the role of the resident emcee for all three days as well. Not a bad deal for fans of the ‘Honestly’ crooner!
