Lifestyle

What’s Trending? Time flies when you’re having fun and this year isn’t any exception. Don’t fret – we’re here to prevent your #FOMO by feeding you the latest tidbits of 2018! BY NICOLE CHAN

HALL OF FAME We’re only halfway through the year, but 2018 has already saw a slew of commendable blockbusters – with a few taking the cake at the 90th Academy Awards. The Shape of Water was arguably the biggest winner of the night, bagging not one but four major awards: Best Picture, Directing, Music (Original Score) and Production Design. Other cult favourites include Dunkirk, Coco and Call Me By Your Name. If you haven’t caught any of the films mentioned, here’s a spoiler: it’s high time you should!

FESTIVAL READY With all the new product launches that the makeup industry keeps feeding us with, it’s no wonder our wallets are always feeling empty. Two collections that caught our eye this year are MAC’s Lunar New Year Collection, a new line of lipsticks that arrived just in time for CNY and Valentine’s Day; and Too Faced’s Life’s a Festival Collection, which gave us major Coachella vibes thanks to their unicorninspired palettes. Just take our money already!

B FOR BEYONCÉ Of course, how could we ever forget about the legendary Beychella performance at the recent Coachella that broke the Internet? Not only did the pop superstar become the first black woman to headline the music festival, her show-stopping set also broke the record for garnering the most amount of live views – a whopping 41 million views – in Coachella history. As if we don’t have enough reasons to love the Queen B!

Tech

Wireless Revolution These days, it’s all about going wireless. Ditch the cords and go hands-free with these new wireless gadgets in the market. BY CHEW HUI LING

If you’re on the lookout for a solid pair of wireless headphones, the Audio-Technica ATH-WS660BT ($218) is definitely worth abandoning the jacks for. Don’t be fooled by the compact factor – it packs a powerful punch in terms of bass quality. While most portable headphones tend to run out of battery quickly, this one unleashes up to 40 hours of epic, unbeatable audio on wireless mode.

An activity tracker that you can wear all year round without charging even once? Enter the Garmin vivofit 4 ($129), which is designed for 24/7 wearability with a whopping one-year battery life. It’s incredibly hassle-free to use – just set it up, slap it on and wear it out. Besides the usual tracking smarts, it can also be paired with your smartphone for additional features such as sleep insights, intensity minutes and more.

Just when we thought the Ionic is good enough, they rolled out the Fitbit Versa ($318) – touted as an “all-day health and fitness watch”. As a smartwatch, it ticks all the right boxes: activity tracking, smart notifications, personalised stats etc. For a truly wireless experience, it also comes with a built-in NFC chip that lets you use credit cards right from your wrist.

10

There are tons of in-ear wireless headphones out there, but if you’re looking for an affordable option that doesn’t compromise on the audio quality, the JBL T110BT ($59.90) will do the trick. Great for those constantly on the move, it features fuss-free controls that enable you to adjust music and take calls with ease. We love that the neckband is designed for an ergonofit fit, making it an absolute pleasure to wear.

When you’re at a party, the last thing you want is to trip over messy wires on the dancefloor. With the Sony SRS-XB41 (available in Q2 2018), all you have to think about is to have a good time. Lauded as the perfect party speaker, this wireless powerhouse features a live sound mode that ‘transports’ you to the middle of a live gig. Even better, you can connect up to 100 different speakers to fill the room with bassheavy sound. Complete with multi-colour line lights and flashing strobe lights, it’s as if stepping into an EDM rave!

Listening to music on the go just got a whole lot easier with the Bose SoundSport Free ($319). No more fumbling over tangled cords on your morning commute – all you need are just two rugged earbuds that feel great and sound even better. Rugged and built to last, these miniature buds are water- and sweatresistant so you don’t have to worry about them slipping off mid-sprint.

Sneaker or speaker? How about both? Taking wearable tech to the next level is the Jabra Speaker Sneaker ($295), which makes it literally possible to enjoy tunes on the move. Designed to go anywhere your feet takes you, this footwear-cum-jukebox wonder delivers up to 15 hours of non-stop stereo power. Plus, you can even personalise it with the dance assist feature via the Jabra app, which blasts tiny vibrations to the beat of the track. Talk about an amplified music experience!

Dreaming of visiting the mesmerising land of Greece, but end up with hopes dashed when you think about the hefty travel costs? Well, this Greek restaurant is your next best solution. Situated at the cultural paradise of Amoy Street, a step inside Alati might just have you rubbing your eyes for reassurance that you didn’t just teleport to the islands of Santorini. Furnished with the country’s signature blue and white aesthetics, Alati is a paradisiacal escape with authentic Greek cuisine to boot. Just at the corner of Bali Line and along Beach Road lies Piedra Negra, a hard-to-spot Mexican restaurant thanks to a never-ending crowd. First glimpse of the place looks just like a party where everyone’s invited – eye-catching murals on the alleyway walls outside, Latin music playing from the speakers, and a gorgeous mosaictiled interior that will make you forget you’re even in Singapore. Once you’re settled in, order the Guacamole ($10.90) to start and relish the sight of it freshly made in front of you via an old school mortar and pestle. You can’t go wrong with Mexican delights like the Mango Madness Ceviche ($12.90) or the all-time favourite Quesadilla Chicken ($11.90) either. And with additional levels that you can book for events, dinner gatherings and birthday parties, consider your next Mexican-themed night sorted!

tones who are really beautiful as well. Although there’s much more to be done, I think we’re off to a great start and we’re definitely moving in the right direction. What’s one product you would personally recommend for first-time buyers? A safer colour to start with would probably be Elvira. It’s a neutral pink hue that flatters most skin tones and a lot of brides love it. What inspired you to start INGA by 27A? As a professional makeup artist, I’ve always wanted to have something to my name while doing makeup at the same time. I wanted to explore having my own line and be able to look back and

INGA BY 27A INGA by 27A produces a brilliant range of lip products that are exceptionally elegant and sleek, much like its founder Marie Soh. Launched in 2016, the inclusive lipstick brand aims to empower every woman to feel beautiful in her own skin – and it’s safe to say they’ve achieved just that.

What makes INGA by 27A stand out from other beauty brands? I decided that INGA should suit Asian skin tones. There is no single skin colour in Singapore so we really have to be inclusive and cater to everyone in such a diversified country. There are so many people with darker skin

What’s something you think the local beauty industry can work on to empower young Singaporeans? I think it would be great if we could establish a common ground where everyone could come together and support each other.

Any advice for aspiring #GirlBosses who want to make it in the beauty industry? Don’t give up! Also, try to have your own signature style that sets you apart from others so that it gives your audience a reason to continue supporting you. Lastly, what does beauty mean to you? Beauty is very individualised. I think it’s an expression of self.

We realised that a lot of women tend to neglect the importance of exfoliation, but it’s essential to our skincare routine as it helps to slog off the old skin cells as we age. It’s Getting

Hot In Here

AFTER A TWO-YEAR HIATUS, 5 SECONDS OF SUMMER’S (5SOS) BACK TO HEAT THINGS UP WITH A BRAND NEW RECORD. WHAT HAVE THE AUSSIE BOYS BEEN UP TO SINCE SOUNDS GOOD FEELS GOOD? BY JULIA YEE

I

t seems like just yesterday that 5SOS burst into the pop-punk scene with the inescapable summer anthem ‘She Looks So Perfect’. After being discovered by former One Direction member Louis Tomlinson, it wasn’t long before the four high school mates rose to international fame. Since then, 5SOS has come a long way – amassing their own dedicated fanbase, playing in sold-out arenas, and even rocking the stage at Madison Square Garden. But with such hectic schedules, it can be hard to keep track of what the band has been busy with. Here’s a quick recap:

2015 Everybody’s Got Their Demons

Shortly after dropping their sophomore album, 5SOS released the poignant music video for ‘Jet Black Heart’. The footage featured fans from around the world lip-syncing to the emotive track, making it all the more meaningful. ‘Jet Black Heart’ speaks to everyone who’s going

through a rough patch, assuring us that it’s okay not to feel good sometimes. Not surprisingly, the heart-tugging video was nominated for Favourite International Video at the Myx Music Awards.

2016 – 2017 Taking A Second To Breathe

After a jam-packed year of touring, it’s understandable that the lads needed some time off for their personal lives. Even so, it’s clear that their passion for music hasn’t changed one bit despite taking a break from band activities – they were spotted hanging out at an AC/DC concert and even started picking up other instruments. What has changed though, was their home. Along with their

2016 Sounds Live Feels Live

The band embarked on their second headlining concert tour Sounds Live Feels Live. However, they never seemed to stay in one place for long, whisking off to another show as soon as one was over – a bittersweet reminder that these talented rockstars have truly made it. Lead guitarist Michael couldn’t have said it better himself when he addressed the crowd in Moscow: “We are from Sydney, Australia. And I don’t know if you know, but it’s really, really, really far away. And the fact that we can take a flight twenty-six hours across the world, and come to Moscow Russia and play a show to this many of you, just blows my mind.”

46

distinctive Aussie drawls, the boys traded their apartments Down Under for American ones – all the better to work on their music. All in all, it’s good to hear that these guys had time to themselves; Calum and Luke got puppies, Michael got a girlfriend, and Ashton got... well, a haircut.

It’s no secret that 5SOS and ONE OK ROCK have a special relationship. In fact, the Japanese rock band was the opening act for 5SOS’ US tour in 2016. As if it couldn’t get any better, the boys joined forces with their fellow foursome band and bless us with ‘Take What You Want’ for ONE OK ROCK’s latest album Ambitions. More future collabs please!

Reminiscing The Feels In Sounds Good Feels Good

2018 We Want You Back

As part of their #5SOS3 tour, the quartet’s currently on the road to promote their new music – including a successful show in Singapore on 2 May. And with their upcoming album Youngblood set for release on 22 June, we can only expect greater things to come from these rockstars.

“WE ARE THE KINGS AND THE QUEENS OF THE NEW BROKEN SCENE” – ‘SHE’S KINDA HOT’ An anthem for the underdogs, this playful ditty features mischievous yet thoughtful lyrics that encourage everyone to embrace their differences.

“I GOT A LONG TERM PLAN WITH SHORT TERM FIXES AND A WASTED HEART THAT JUST ECLIPSES” – ‘STORY OF ANOTHER US’ This song is about struggling to salvage a dying relationship. After all, is any album really complete without a love song?

“YOU SAY THAT I’M TOO COMPLICATED, HUNG UP AND MISEDUCATED / I SAY NINE-TO-FIVE IS OVERRATED AND WE ALL FALL DOWN” – ‘PERMANENT VACATION’ The band sings about their desire to run away from the rat race, with borderline-satirical lyrics that nod towards punk-rock influences.

Brand New Boys

THERE’S A NEW POWER DUO IN TOWN. MEET MXM OF PRODUCE 101 FAME, WHO WON OVER THE HEARTS OF MANY WITH THEIR CATCHY TUNES AND BOY-NEXT-DOOR CHARMS. BY CHEW HUI LING

Name: Lim Youngmin But you can call him: God Zero, Bbangmin, Alpaca He’s born on: 25 December 1995 Position: Rapper Trainee period: 1 year 2 months

Bet you didn’t know… It’s not a drill y’all: the 23-year-old revealed #1 that he actually lived in Singapore for five

years since he was born. He’s been expressing his desire of visiting ever since, and we couldn’t be happier that he popped by for their recent fanmeeting. Come back soon, Youngmin!

YOUNGMIN’S HOT LIST BLOCK B – “Not only is their music great, but all the members have distinct colours too.”

Find yourself a man who can do both – the charming lad can go from Bbangmin to God Zero in a split second. In non-fandom speak, Bbangmin is a nickname for his cute side while God Zero references the moment when he unleashes the inner beast in him (cue ‘Open Up’).

PENTAGON – “I hope to be close with Pentagon. I’m thankful to them for always giving us such a warm welcome.”

Ever wonder how our alpaca boy got his adorable nickname? It’s all thanks to Donghyun, who first coined it for Youngmin because of his uncanny resemblance to the fleecy creature. Similarity: 100%!

JAY PARK – “He’s been my role model since young. I think it’s cool that he can do everything from singing to dancing to producing, and he takes good care of the artistes in his company.”

#3

MXM STARTER PACK • Prior to their debut, Youngmin and Donghyun participated in Mnet survival programme Produce 101 Season 2 – finishing at 15th and 28th place respectively.

• With their boyish good looks and fresh-faced appeal, it’s no surprise that the pair was chosen to be the newest models of popular K-beauty brand Tony Moly back in August.

58

• On 6 September 2017, the Brand New Music duo officially debuted as MXM (which stands for “Mix and Match” and “More x More”) with the release of their first EP Unmix.

Bet you didn’t know… If you’ve ever bumped into two Donghyuns #1 walking down the street, you’re not seeing

double – Donghyun revealed that he has a fraternal twin brother named Taehyun. Good genes certainly run in the family!

Don’t be fooled by his soft image – Donghyun packs quite a punch, literally. Throwback to his Produce 101 days when he emerged second place in the punch king battle (NU’EST W’s Baekho was first).

#2

Not only can he sing, dance and rap, the multi-talented chap possesses some solid composing chops too. His latest self-composed piece is a sweet ballad called ‘Naturally Curly’, inspired by the K-drama Cheese In The Trap. What else can Donghyun not do?

#3

DONGHYUN’S HOT LIST GD&TOP – “I always watch GD&TOP’s performances. Although they are a far wall for me to reach, I respect the way they enjoy themselves on stage.” VIXX – “I like how their dance choreography, expressions and gazes become synchronised with their music. I wish to become a duo like them.”

B.A.P – “Fans say that I look like B.A.P’s Daehyun sunbaenim!

Hustlin’ Looking to earn some extra pocket money? Here are some unconventional paying gigs to help you make quick bucks in your spare time. BY GRACE CHEN

SHOP ABROAD Travelling abroad for the holidays and have extra luggage space to spare? Be a personal shopper for strangers through platforms such as Airfrov and Tompang. Based on your travel location, you’ll be paired up with a shopper who wishes to purchase a particular brand or item that is typically not available in Singapore, such as local snacks, beauty products or newlylaunched gadgets. In return, you get to make a decent service fee in exchange for flying back the goods. Earning extra cash while satisfying your wanderlust? Sign us up please!

RUN ERRANDS If you don’t mind running around for errands and patiently braving long queues for that extra buck, sign up for apps like The Butler or LaborMe. Simply complete tasks such as buying coffee, delivering lunch and picking up drycleaning, and get paid after finishing it. Most of these apps operate on a bidding system whereby you have the freedom of bidding for the type of jobs you want. What’s more, this ad-hoc job lets you state your own rates and work on flexible hours so you can work whenever you want to!

While some of you may be hesistant in including part-time jobs in your resume, having a stable work history proves that you have relevant experience and might even turn out to be a potential career launch pad. We all have to start somewhere, don’t we?

GET PAID TO SHOP Sounds like a dream? Well, it sort of is; except you’ll be shopping for someone else. But if you’re looking to indulge in retail therapy, this is definitely the job for you as there are apps like HonestBee that actually pay you to load up your shopping cart. You’ll not only be able to work on a flexible schedule – which means you can choose to shop for your customers after school, over the weekends or during the school holidays – you can even opt to work close to home for convenience. Some apps pay by hourly rates while others pay by the number of items, so do compare the different options available before settling on one.

JOIN A FOCUS GROUP If you’re outspoken and have a few hours to kill, why not participate in a focus group? Essentially, you’re getting paid for your focused feedback on consumer products that often require some tweaking before being released into the market. On top of that, you’ll get to make new friends with whom you share a common interest while expanding your social network. Similar to surveys, some companies may choose to give out cash vouchers instead of dollar bills so be sure to check with your point of contact before applying if you’re particular about that.

COMPLETE SURVEYS If you want something that lets you work in your pyjamas all day, this would be a great option for you. All you have to do is give your opinion on certain brands or products via short surveys, and your job is done. However, do keep in mind that most of these companies prefer to pay in terms of shopping vouchers or free samples rather than cash, so you won’t exactly be raking in the ka-ching. It’s also important that you do your research on the company issuing these surveys beforehand to make sure they are credible, before giving out your address, bank account details or other confidential information.

BE A PET-SITTER Attention all animal lovers – pet-sitting is actually a job! With apps such as Pawshake and PetBacker, you get paid to be a companion for your new furry friends while their owners are busy or overseas. Duties usually include feeding, cleaning and walking them. Start off by taking on the more short-term jobs that will only last a few hours at most. Once you’ve gotten the hang of it, you can then choose to house-sit over the school holidays if time permits. The best part? You don’t even have to be a pet owner to register as a pet-sitter!
