high metabolism and assumed I would look like this forever. Fast forward a decade (and more) later, I notice that the metabolism that I relied heavily on slowed down and I was losing a lot of the muscle tone I took pride in as a teenager – on hindsight, I should’ve continued leading a healthy lifestyle, and exercising more regularly even after I started working. In this month, we talk a lot about fitness but it’s not just about looking good or slimming down. If your excuse for not working out is your hate for

cardio, we have plenty of suggestions for fun workouts (p.72) that won’t take the breath out of you. We also spoke to Sandra Riley Tang of The Sam Willows (p.82) about her workout routine, and how she co-created The Yoga Co. This issue also marks my last with Teenage

magazine, and I thoroughly enjoyed creating

content that is interesting and relevant for you. As someone who grew up reading Teenage and is thankful for everything that it has taught me during my teenage years, I hope that I was able to do the same for you. I’ll leave you in the good hands of Johanna, who will continue the legacy of every Teenage editor who had put in late nights, blood, sweat and tears to bring you an awesome issue each month.

Thank you and I hope you’ll continue showing support to Teenage. Best wishes,

Watch Your Steps The most noteworthy fitness trackers in the market that we can’t wait to sport (no pun intended).

When it comes to overall performance, the Fitbit Charge HR ($218) is one beast that’s hard to beat. At its core, is Fitbit’s innovative heart rate technology that helps to maintain workout intensity and monitor calorie burn so you can get the most out of your routines. Combine that with round-the-clock tracking of steps, sleep and exercise progress, and you get a truly formidable tracker that does it all.

The fashion-conscious mentality in us would like to thank Misfit Shine ($119.90) for introducing a versatile modular design – you can wear it on your wrist, slip it in your pocket, or flaunt it as a pendant. This little guy is also water-resistant so you can even bring it to the pool. And we love how it runs on a coin cell battery that lasts for months, instead of having to charge it every few days like most fitness bands.

The Garmin Vivosmart HR ($229) is a touchscreen powerhouse that sends out smart reminders for you to stay active whenever it senses you being MIA. What’s more, it provides speedy notifications of your daily stats, heart rate, incoming calls, social media alerts – and even measures the floors climbed to gauge your activity intensity.

The new Fitbit Alta ($198) is one good-looking piece of customisable tech that you’ll want to take everywhere. Featuring interchangeable bands from classic satin finish to luxe leather to sleek metallic bangles (coming soon), your Alta will be the perfect statement piece for any outfit. It nails the basics of activity tracking, visual feedback and smart notifications, but lacks the heart rate capability that most athletes look out for.

The Sony SmartBand 2 ($132) isn’t exactly a looker, but it does deliver what it promises. Designed to help you “find your balance in life”, it keeps tabs on your pulse and stress levels with an optical heart rate monitor. You can also sync it with the Lifelog app which allows you to look back at your data from weeks, months or even years. How convenient!

The Jawbone UP2 ($199) gets a new style update from the classic flat strap to the new lightweight thin strap design, which makes it less clunky and more stylish. Packing the same smarts as its older sibling, the UP2 tracks your steps and sleep while guiding you through the milestones – much like a digital personal trainer. Plus it’s cool how we can rope in teammates for some friendly competition.

Fitness footwear has come a long way from the days of ‘one pair fits all activities’. We break down the differences.

RUNNING

Photo: adidas

Photo: Under Armour

TRAINER

Think of cross-trainers as the jack of all trades: they are hybrid shoes with elements from different athletic footwear, which means it’s versatile enough to be used for most gym activities that involve side-to-side motion (like aerobics, kickboxing, or weight-lifting). But it definitely won’t provide enough support nor cushioning for high-impact sports like running.

As opposed to walking, each running step produces a harsher impact of three times the body weight, and runners usually land on more areas of their feet. Running shoes are also categorised between either the needs of the runner – think motion control for flatfooted runners, or more stability for overpronaters – or based on the terrain and intensity of the activity.

Look out for: While searching for a suitable pair of trainers, bear in mind factors like how lightweight it is, the fit of the shoe, whether there’s enough heel and arch support, and how stable it is. Although the shoes are meant for low-impact activities and should theoretically last longer than running shoes, do make sure that your trainers are replaced after you wear ‘em for more than 100 hours.

Look out for: There are tons of running shoes in the market, and while the main features you should look for are proper cushioning and stability, the most important thing is to ensure a good fit for your pronation, shape and arch of your foot.

short crash course on the band’s history to get you ready for their gig.

2009: They used to be birds

No, seriously. Before they were Of Monsters and Men, they were part of lead vocalist Nanna’s solo musical project called Songbird. And in just a week of working together, the then four-piece act (Nanna, Brynjar, Raggi and Arnar) miraculously emerged as champions in an annual music competition, and the rest is history.

2011-2013: Then they were monsters

Fame came fast and furious after adopting their new moniker – courtesy of Raggi’s spur-of-the-moment idea – and we’re glad they stuck with it. Of Monsters and Men sealed a record deal, topped charts with their explosive debut album My Head Is An Animal, and soon became the most buzzed-about indie band by singing about fantastical creatures and animalistic adventures. Raggi explained: “We write the songs

ince the release of the quadrupleplatinum monster hit that is ‘Little Talks’ back in 2011, Of Monsters and Men had the world sit up and take notice of their enchanting blend of anthemic singalongs and unique folkpop sound. Five years into their career, the band is now regarded as one of the finest Icelandic musical exports, touring non-stop and all over the globe. They’re about to make a stop in Singapore as part of WOAH Fest in May, and if you’re still unfamiliar with these guys, here’s a

together, and we found we could bond better by telling each other fairytales than writing about real life. I couldn’t say, ‘Hey Nanna, come and write a love song about my girlfriend.’ It just wouldn’t work.” Now that’s something we don’t hear every day.

2014-present: Now they are men

Their sophomore effort Beneath the Skin is the complete opposite of My Head Is An Animal, delving deep into human emotions and revealing a more intimate look at their personal lives. “The last

album was very much monsters. Now it’s very much men,” revealed Nanna. “We talk a lot about the body and skin. It’s very physical, but it’s also about the mental.” So it seems like the members are no longer telling each other fairytales, but instead coming closer to reality – but that’s not to say they’ve completely lost their sense of wonder. Regardless of what musical direction they wander towards, there’s still a definitive personality to Of Monsters and Men, and we definitely love what we’re hearing so far.

Forget about the gym – the Teenage team explores six unconventional exercises that guarantee a fun yet fulfilling workout. BY JOHANNA TEO

Who: ArissA & Michelle

What is it? Xtend Barre is a licensed programme, which was developed in the US. Drawing inspiration from dance, ballet and pilates, each lesson has four components – aerobics-fuelled dance moves, barre exercises, core exercises and resistance training. Who is it for? Xtend Barre is a good mix of cardio, strength, resistance, flexibility training and core exercises that’ll help you get lean, strong and flexible. And it’s great for strengthening the pelvic floor and suitable for those who have back injuries, as it is a low-impact workout. What you need to know: Xtend Barre is an awesome way for those who would want to achieve the svelte physique of a dancer. You don’t actually need to have a background in ballet in order to attend the classes,

72

although knowledge of basic ballet terminology would help. Most of the moves actually consist of isometric motion (small, controlled movements) that can tire you out quicker that you think. We find that the class really works the different muscles on the legs (even those you never realised were there), so you’ll be sporting leaner legs and a perky derriere in no time.

rock cliMBing

Who: ArissA, hui ling, JohAnnA & kAMille

What is it? Rock climbing is an intensive sport where participants scale natural rock formations or artificial walls. There are many climbing categories, but indoor climbers typically engage in top rope climbing, bouldering, speed

climbing, and lead climbing. While most climbing requires climbing equipment and a belaying system, bouldering usually doesn’t require safety ropes as it involves scaling from side to side on low routes. A popular sport, there are many rock climbing competitions in Singapore. Who is it for? Although rock climbing is suitable for all ages, prepare to be pushed to your physical and mental limits. Thanks to the pulling, gripping and pushing movements required while scaling the walls, climbers engage their entire body with vigorous cardio and muscle strengthening, from literally the fingers to the toes. You’ll find an increased range of motion and flexibility as climbers

stretch and even leap from handholds and footholds. It gets trickier with each difficulty level, which engages climbers’ problem-solving skills to see each ascension through. With rock climbing, everyone starts at the bottom (no pun intended). Beginners are taught basic climbing techniques, the safety measures as well as how to handle the equipment, and it’s full-on practicing and refining your climbing techniques from there. What you need to know: Local rock climbing gyms will provide the equipment, but serious climbers usually purchase their own climbing footwear – get a glove-like fit that curls your toes in comfortably for a good toe grip on small footholds. There’ll also be a harness that loops around your thighs and waist, so wear loose-fitting attire that’ll allow you to move freely, with at least knee-length bottoms to avoid abrasions. All climbing (with the exception of bouldering and advance climbing) requires a belayer to increase/remove tension of the rope to prevent falling during ascension. You’ll have to go through a course in order to be a belayer, and Onsight Climbing Gym offers a sport climbing course which includes top-rope belaying so participants can belay each other instead of having to hire an instructor during each visit.

DearKelly Dear readers, Front-page headlines in The New Paper reported:

JAIL, CANE FOR POLICE NSF WHO RAPED TEEN CAUGHT HAVING SEX WITH BOYFRIEND AT HDB STAIRCASE He filmed, then bullied them. I was very angry to read this headline because of my long history interacting with youths. Anyone taking advantage of the naivety of children makes me livid. Then, on the second page of the article, I discovered to my horror he had extorted money from the boy. I know from several surveys I have conducted, that most teenagers don’t read the newspapers daily. Hence, I will devote this ‘Dear readers’ letter to highlighting this case. The judge handed down a stiff sentence to the police NSF – 18 years jail, 15

strokes of the cane for rape, sexual assault by penetration, outrage of modesty and extortion.

Let’s investigate: The policeman photographed a teenage couple engaging in sexual activities on a HDB staircase. He then flashed his warrant card threatening to take them to the police station. The girl pleaded that she doesn’t want her parents to know. The policeman comes up with a solution promising not to apprehend them if they allow him to video her performing oral sex on the boy. Fearfully, they agreed but then he forced the girl to perform oral sex on him and then raped her. Two days later, he called the boy and asked for $40 threatening to expose the sex video. The teenager complied and paid in two instalments.

The girl, being very upset, told her friends what happened. They encouraged her to make a police report. The victim confessed everything to her parents and together they made a police report. The policeman is arrested soon after and charged.

What teenagers should know about the law:

1

If a policeman flashes his warrant card at you, say: “I would

like to call my parents”. If the kids had done this, the policeman would have run off, as his plan would have been thwarted. If the teenagers had made a report, the policeman could have been charged with a criminal offence of

photographing them with the aim to intimidate and make them do his dastardly bidding. They didn’t, so he went further. More savvy students would have smelt a rat when he demanded the girl give the guy oral sex and let him video it. What responsible police officer would do this? But the teenagers were intimidated and did as ordered. This emboldened him and he knew he could go further, which he proceeded to do. When he demanded the girl perform oral sex on him, I don’t care how much you don’t want your parents to know, the kids should have either screamed for help or run to the police station and made an immediate report.

Sure, their parents would have found out, but it is less traumatic than the girl agreeing to perform oral sex and then submit to being raped by the policeman who broke several laws. Both kids were 16 at the time.

The last straw was demanding $40 from the boy. This is extortion. The poor guy obviously did not have much money as he paid in two instalments. Even at this stage, it was not too late to make a police report but they did not. Obviously, this is what the crooked cop was banking on.

In a case like this, making a police report at the earliest point in time is best. Readers, please be on

guard. I am sure as you read this you’d have realised that no honest policeman would have done any of this. You must learn to protect yourselves. Saying you want to go to the police station when he proceeded to demand oral sex, would have sent him running. The girl would have been saved from performing oral sex on a stranger and worse, saved from being raped, a horror that will overshadow her life forever. Both teens need longterm counselling.

When things reach a critical stage, kids will break down… all will be revealed. I have seen this

happen many times before. So my advice is – don’t allow something ugly to happen to you. Take your parents or teacher(s) into your confidence. When the chips are down, they will protect you. This happened in all the cases I have dealt with. It happened in this case too as the girl’s parents took her to make a police report. Teachers and parents will be there for you in trying times. Turn to them.

NOTE: Engaging in sexual

activities in public is a demeaning activity. Yes, a HDB staircase is a public place; hence the policeman could photograph them. Girls, please don’t descend to engaging in sex acts in the open. No guy, who holds a girl in

high regard, would treat her in this disrespectful way. Always here for you.

From 1979 to 1983 she had a counselling column in a local woman’s magazine. Since 1996 she has been responding to Teenage readers in her Dear Kelly column.

Hated by my classmates Hi Kelly, I enjoy reading your column. I am facing a problem.

Since the beginning of this year, I have been hated by my classmates.

I have tried to salvage the situation, but I don’t know if people who say they are my friends are really my friends. Some of them treat me violently. I am unable to trust anyone. I have not spoken to my parents as they might get very worried and come to school and speak to the teachers. I’m

afraid if they come, I will be hated for life and will never be invited for outings.

Kelly: Greetings loyal fan. Is there cause for you to be suspicious of people who say they are your friends? Or is it your nature to be suspicious? Since you are having a tough time making friends, I suggest you approach someone you trust. There must be at least one student whom you believe likes you.

Here’s what to do:

important When writing to me through mail, state your Full Name, Age, I.C. No.,Telephone No., Gender and Pseudonym. There is no length restriction. Send your letters to: Dear Kelly, Teenage Magazine, 20 Bedok South Road, Singapore 469277 or via email at:

dearkelly@key-editions.com Letters will be treated with the strictest confidence. I cannot respond to requests for personal responses.

1

Ask this person why

like you.

people don’t

Ask for suggestions that would make it easier for you to be accepted by the class.

2

3

Once you know what you are doing that makes people keep away from you, try to change any

unacceptable habits. Be humble, listen attentively and life will improve. Before you try to make new friends, work on the traits that irk (irritate) people. It’s never too late

to improve one’s self-image.

87

I am trying to gain the trust of the popular clique in class and also trying to get rid of all the doubts I have but I can’t! Please help me! From: Help

Classmates will notice the difference and the situation might improve over time.

4

If your friend says it will be difficult for you to be accepted by the class, you will have to seek friends at

CCA or sign up to shelve books at the school library. You will meet people here and they could become potential friends.

5

You state that: “… some of them treat me violently”. Violence is

unacceptable. You have to report any violence inflicted on you to the Discipline Master. You do not go to school to be physically abused. School is supposed to be a happy environment where students are protected from harm as they learn.

6

I suggest you have a chat with the school counsellor. I am sure

you have issues you have not mentioned so I don’t have the complete picture. The situation will improve now that you are taking steps to resolve your problems. Best wishes.
