Ed's Note LOVING THIS MONTH:

Hi everyone,

Etude House recently introduced a new line of scented body care products with three different scents, Etude House Loving Days Fragrance line. Choose from Blooming Love – a floral bouquet with top notes of peony and roses, Sweet Sparkling – an uplifting citrus fragrance, or Cool Sugar – a refreshing fruity blend. Each scent collection comes in a fragrance mist ($16), body wash ($21) and body lotion ($25) so you can mix, match and layer the scent however you like it!

This month, we celebrate Singapore’s

Golden Jubilee. Before you start

lamenting on how there are too many

SG50 activities this year, take the time to think about how our forefathers have managed to transform Singapore from a small fishing village to the metropolis it is today – all in a mere 50 years!

Let us give thanks to the amazing work that has been put in by the pioneers of Singapore, and commemorate how far we’ve come. As you flip through the pages in this month’s Teenage, you will find articles that honour Singapore

– from apps that are developed in our sunny island (p. 20), the best home-grown beauty brands (p. 46), to our fave local celebs (p. 58). Don’t forget to check out our cover story on 987FM’s Sonia Chew (p. 74), where she talks about her favourite local haunts, food and fashion labels. There’s gonna be an extra day off this year in celebration of SG50, so maybe we can all take the time to

have a chat with our parents

or grandparents to find out what Singapore was like back in the day.

Perhaps they could share some interesting stories that history books don’t offer. Have a happy National Day!

Your Say Hi, Teenage! I’ve been reading Teenage magazine since the ’90s and I picked up the habit again after a few years break.

Holler at us! We want to know what you think of Teenage, how our stories make a difference in your life, and where we can improve. Here’s how!

There’s been a lot of changes since the ’90s and I kinda like the articles featured – especially the new apps that are introduced in the tech section (you don’t get to see this in the ’90s) and I really like your feature on The Sam Willows in the July 2015 issue as well as the regular feature Off-The-Charts.

I’ve been a fan of BIGBANG since their debut. I like your cover story documenting their rise and struggles that befell many K-pop groups. Textbook

BALANCE

“Money, like emotions, is something you must control to keep your life on the right track.”

THAT BUDGET

– Natasha Munson, motivational speaker and life coach

We know, setting a budget might not sound like the most exciting thing to do the world, but you’ll thank us later when you feel those purse strings loosen. BY CHEW HUI LING

TRACK THE TRENDS

Where exactly does your money go? Many of us don’t have the habit of monitoring our expenses, and only come to regret it when we feel the pinch. Apps like Mint, LearnVest and SimpleTrack will help to keep your budget in check and give tips on how to curb your spending habits. If you’re not into tech tools, another nifty way is to collect all your receipts and review your spending after every week.

NEEDS VS WANTS

WHY VS HOW

When creating a budget, it’s only reasonable to crack your brain for as many money-cutting ideas as possible, right? On the contrary, those who focus more on why they want to save instead of how they plan to save, are more likely to succeed. Always keep in mind the reason why you wanted to set aside money – say, saving up for that vacation you’ve long dreamed of – and work towards it.

Do you seriously need that double-shot espresso to perk you up for class, or is it because that cute barista’s on shift during your break? You don’t have to sacrifice your little luxuries, but you can always opt for a healthier alternative. Case in point: instead of $6 coffee, make yourself a cup of green tea at home. As much as it sucks at that moment, you’ll sock away plenty of dough in the long run.

GET YOUR GAME ON

QUALITY OVER QUANTITY

Living on a budget is about as much fun as reading an encyclopedia, but that doesn’t mean it’s impossible to make it interesting. Buddy up with a pal who’s also on a budget, to see who can sell off their pre-loved threads for the most bucks, or who can collect the most onedollar coins in a jar after a month. For the hardcore, try beating us at our supertough budget challenge on page 80!

One common mistake every ‘budget-shopper’ does is to buy things on the cheap (which we bet will fall apart in less than three months). When making a purchase, always consider the value instead of the price. For example, buy a cheap pair of shoes, and you’ll have to keep substituting it with new ones. So why not invest your hard-earned bucks on a decent pair of shoes that’s made to last and well worth your money?

KNOW YOUR LIMITS

CHEAT DAY

It certainly feels good seeing your bank balance creep up, but be careful not to go overboard with the hoarding. Money is power, and sooner or later you’ll be so obsessed with reaching your goal that you start giving up things you enjoy and going against your own principles. It’s great that you’re saving up for your future, but it’s just as important that you live life in the present.

It’s totally okay to indulge in a guilty pleasure once in a while, as long as you don’t splash your cash all at once. After all, who wants to hide at home and survive on cup noodles every day? It’s always nice to have something to look forward to instead of driving yourself insane, plus it motivates you to stick to the plan. So go ahead and give yourself a little treat!

IT’S THE LITTLE THINGS

Sorry Ed Sheeran, sometimes it’s the best things in life that come free to us. This sounds like a no-brainer, but when you recall your most memorable milestones in life, chances are these moments have very little to do with money. So instead of finding temporary bliss in material purchases that will cost you an arm and a leg, spend the time acquiring new experiences and hanging out with the people you love.

82

83

I also enjoyed reading the July issue of Teenage magazine, where I learnt a lot of money saving tips and tricks. ‘The Budget Challenge’, ‘Balance That Budget’ and ‘Songs About Money’ really hit the mark when it came to talking about tightening purse strings. I like how you always put the latest fashion news and celebrity news such as BIGBANG and Jung Yong Hwa. I really enjoy reading Teenage as I feel that I have grown more mature with every edition I read. Dear Kelly has allowed me to know that I’m not the only one suffering and that there’s always a solution to our problems. Thanks Teenage for all the hard work that your team has put in – I really enjoy reading the magazine. From, Zhiiqing

Old School Delights 215 Upper Thomson Road, Singapore 574349 You probably wouldn’t want to be in a classroom after being cooped up in school all day, but Old School Delights is one you wouldn’t mind staying for hours in. Adorned with knickknacks reminiscent of the ’70s, this unpretentious cafe follows the oldfashioned ritual of student life – daily specials are illustrated on wall-towall chalkboards and patrons would order on whiteboards. We love their take on traditional dishes like Laksa ($7.40) and Nasi Lemak ($7.80), but the ultimate must-try has got to be the Mee Siam ($5.80), which is backed up by a 30-year-old secret recipe.

The Mama Shop 195 Pearl’s Hill Terrace #01-54, Singapore 168976 As if dominating the small screen isn’t enough, MediaCorp actresses Felicia Chin and Sora Ma have since expanded their reach to F&B with The Mama Shop. Situated at the former police barracks, this secluded snack bar is aptly dressed up as a mama shop with old school nibbles to boot – a surprisingly modest and homely spot despite its owners’ star status. They specialise in local flavours with a twist, such as the Waffles with Nori Tempura Soft Shell Crab ($16) and Homemade Lasagne ($13), which are usually served with wheel crackers or iced gems on the side.

Brunches Cafe

96 Rangoon Road, Singapore 218381 Visiting Brunches Cafe is akin to stepping into an elaborately decorated playground, laden with artfully funky curios and retro collectibles. The star of the show is indisputably the four-seater sofa set, which was converted from a vintage Mini Cooper. If you can take your eyes off the interior, the grub is equally as extensive. Breakfast delights like the Eggs Royale ($15.50) and succulent mains like the Juicy Beef Burger ($19.50) are but a morsel of the menu options. Their freshly baked pastries deserve an honourable mention for novelty as well – they serve cupcakes with a pipette of fruit coulis for you to either drizzle atop or infuse into the centre!

Concrete Prepping Your mixture should comprise two parts cement powder (home hardware stores), one part water. Mix thoroughly. Concrete Bookend Letters The simplest of the lot, all you’ve to do is cut away the top portion of the cardboard alphabet (craft stores), remove any stuffing that’s inside and duct tape the sides to prevent warping. Then, make sure to fill all corners and sides of the cardboard letter with concrete before pouring in the rest of the mixture. Make sure there are no air bubbles by tapping on the side of the mould. Leave to dry overnight. After it’s solidified, you can then proceed to tape off whichever sides you wish to spray paint, and proceed accordingly.

Concrete Tea-light Holder & Planter Form plastic moulds for the base by meticulously cutting polyhedra templates on hard plastic sheets (craft stores) and taping the sides together securely to make sure it doesn’t leak. Then, slowly pour in the concrete till it’s three quarters full while occasionally stirring it to prevent the mixture from lumping up. Create a depression in your preferred size using glasses (or any other item of your choice) lubricated with oil and continue filling the mould to its brim. Be sure to remove the glass when it’s half dry or else it’ll get stuck #TrueStory. It’s very tedious, but definitely worth the effort.

Twig Jewellery Holder Taking a leaf (lol) from Pinterest, we sanded down twigs – that we found on the ground – before spray-painting ‘em chrome silver. Then, we created the base using the same methods as the tea light holder and planter, sans the glass bit, and stuck the sprigs in while propping them up to make sure everything dries properly and in place. Again, make sure to purge all air bubbles before leaving to dry overnight. And you’re done!

SHADES OF

min & mae

We interview style mavens Guan Min and Mae Tan on all things beauty-related, where the gorgeous duo shared their Holy Grail products, biggest makeup faux pas, and answered their most-asked beauty questions ever. By Johanna Teo

Judging from their Instagram feeds, Guan Min (the owner and designer of fashion label Feist Heist) and Mae Tan’s (reality show star with a penchant for travel) styles are as different as night and day. The former prefers classic monochromatic palettes while the

latter loves experimenting with daring fashion concepts. With their foray into beauty – the pair collaborated with local cosmetics brand Faux Fayc on their own lip colour shade – it only makes sense that the

42

girls would have diverging beauty preferences as well. But during our interview with the duo (where they shared their best makeup tips, beauty essentials and more), we realised these friends share a common love for beauty – makeup taboos and all.

mae tan (@MarxMae)

If you have to leave the house with only one part of your face made up, what would it be?

Eyebrows. People need to understand this. It has to be eyebrows guys, don’t leave the house without your brows done.

Your personal beauty tricks?

I like to alternate between using my mascara wand like this (shows a swiping upwards motion) and [the usual application method], because it clumps [my lashes], which I like. It actually lengthens your eyelashes a lot. Your biggest beauty faux pas?

There was once, I was very inspired by Taylor Momson. I wasn’t so experienced with makeup at the time, so I literally piled on black eyeshadow on my eyes… It just looked like someone punched me. It was so bad. (Laughs) What’s one beauty question that you’re often asked?

“How does your eyeliner stay on for so long?” We had a Maldives vlog where I had my eyeliner on [throughout the water activities]. I used 3 Concept Eyes Liquid Eye Liner, and I bought five of it because it was so good. It doesn’t smudge, and it’s waterproof – if you just let it dry, without touching it, it stays right there. How do you adjust your look according to your frequently changing hair colour?

With lighter hair, I put on lighter foundation, so that I don’t look so dark. But with my hair, I’m also more conscious of the colours I’m wearing, because the hair has [even more] to do with the outfit than makeup. How was the process of customising MARX like?

“I don’t believe in having rules in makeup. If you can get something good out of it, Just go ahead.”

43

I really like Kylie Jenner’s nude brown lip colour, so we came up with a few. This shade is something very different, because it’s shiny but also matte, and I feel like I’ve never seen this colour around. I go crazy with lip colours, so this was something crazy enough for me lah.

Singapore might be small, but we’ve certainly made our mark globally. From pork floss buns to fine designer labels, here are some home-grown brands that have done our nation proud. By Cara Wong

Singapore Airlines

With so many international stars endorsing its products, one would not immediately associate OSIM with Singapore. Established by Ron Sim (of whom the brand is named after), the company is well known for its massage chairs and lifestyle products. While that may not sound very appealing to you right now, give it a couple of years and you’ll understand the need for massage chairs, especially after a particularly long day of studying/work.

OSIM

54

No list of great Singaporean brands is ever complete without this behemoth of a company. As the national flight carrier, it has certainly put our name out there by consistently snagging top spots in international airline rankings. Let’s face it, you always get a small thrill knowing that you’re flying with SIA. And who wouldn’t be? The carrier is well known for its highly stringent process in selecting and training its flight attendants, so you can be assured of high service standards. What a great way to fly indeed!

TWG Tea

Pork floss buns, need we say anymore? In case you’re unaware, that’s not all that they’re famous for – the BreadTalk Group is responsible for a slew of successful eateries. Chances are, you’ll spot at least two eateries in any shopping mall in Singapore under their name. They are responsible for bringing in the awesome xiao long baos of Taiwanese franchise Din Tai Fung into Singapore, operating Toast Box, RamenPlay and even Food Republic. Today, the multimillion dollar group has over 800 stores worldwide – even in the Middle East!

TWG Tea has expanded rapidly for a brand that’s only been around since 2008. Their dine-in menu includes tea-infused food, with over 800 varieties of tea from every single tea-producing country. They may have gotten into a spot of trouble for using the year 1837 (they claim that it’s a tribute to the founding of Singapore’s Chamber of Commerce) in their logo, but that didn’t stop them from opening salons and boutiques in over 14 countries. They’re even stocked in Harrods in London and Dean & Deluca in New York City!

BreadTalk

You know you’ve made it big when Hollywood A-listers like Jennifer Lawrence have donned one of your creations. Even Britain’s Duchess of Cambridge Kate Middleton wore one of their pieces during her trip here in 2012. Starting out as a men’s shirt label in 2002, the company has since branched out to produce womenswear, gaining popularity amongst celebs and ordinary folk alike for their affordable and quality pieces. The brand regularly presents its collections in New York and Milan, and has a string of standalone stores across Asia-Pacific.

Here are the new generation of local acts dominating your (and ours) social media platforms, airwaves and TV screens, and what they truly think about all things Singaporean. By Johanna Teo

What’s your favourite childhood memory?

Where everybody is forced to talk to people when they want to get to know them, instead of relying on Facebook/ WhatsApp. Which Singaporean stereotype do you fall under?

I think I fall under bo chap, I generally don’t really care about much things that don’t matter to me. Creating an inside joke of sorts with their videos, NOC uses hilariously identifiable characters, dialects, Singaporean stereotypes and everyday experiences to inject their signature brand of tellit-as-it-is humour into the meticulously filmed vids we look forward to every Sunday. Be it light-hearted satire, semi-controversial elements or comical how-to guides on mundane inconveniences, NOC’s biggest strength is undoubtedly their ability to capture local humour at its best, and we love it.

What local superstition do you believe in?

I’m not really superstitious, but I do get paranoid about accidentally stepping on things during the Hungry Ghost Festival. What were your favourite local TV shows while growing up?

Phua Chu Kang, Comedy Night and The Unbeatables series! I still watch reruns whenever they air them on late night TV, [and] I love them. The humour and acting was so real and relatable back when they allowed Singlish.

What’s your favourite childhood memory?

Buying snacks from mama shops underneath the HDB block. I can easily spend $10 in a couple of hours just on 80-cent snacks and sweets!

Pick one local dish to eat for the rest of your life.

Lor mee at Old Airport Road, it’s so epic that once a week, NOC wakes up at 6am just to eat it!

@SylSylNOC

What do you miss the most about Singapore while travelling?

Safety definitely. Also English signboards! Once in Tokyo, we were lost for one hour searching for a restaurant, because we couldn’t understand their directions. Which Singaporean stereotype do you fall under?

Cheapskate! Two years ago, I bought tons of tampons ‘cause they were on sale. I am still using them till today! (Laughs) Super aunty.

What’s your favourite childhood memory?

Meeting my neighbourhood friends at the playground and building sandcastles, playing block catching, taking turns visiting friends’ houses to eat, and trying to catch ants to put in a sharpener as my pet. Also, the weekend routine of Yamaha classes, where my parents would bring my sister and I to learn the Electone.

Pick one local dish to eat for the rest of your life.

Hokkien mee! I love the sound of the uncle frying noodles in the wok. I also love the dish because it has its own individual taste of gravy, and the chilli always complements the dish very well. One plate is enough [for me] to feel contented for the day. Which Singaporean stereotype do you fall under?

!!

What’s your favourite childhood memory?

I remember my grandfather bringing me to Tanjong Rhu for crabbing every weekend, and I’ll always bring [the crabs] home for my grandmother to cook and eat together.

Kanchiong would best describe me. I guess it’s because Singapore is very fast-paced and everything is super ‘chop chop’. Hence, I guess the culture here rubbed onto me and I’m not embarrassed to admit that!

Kiasi, because I’ve not earned enough [money], I’ve not gotten married, and I’ve yet to start a family of my own. (Laughs) What local superstition do you believe in?

I believe in spirits because I’m quite a traditional guy who prays and burns incense paper.

Cover Story

Girl of Now 987FM’s Sonia Nicola Chew is fast on track to becoming the nation’s new It girl, dispelling stereotypes along the way with her totally likeable yet borderline kooky demeanour. Here, she generously indulged our curiosity on her quirky hobbies, celebrity crushes and public misconceptions. BY Chew Hui Ling

F .O .O .D Fish Head Noodle Soup “There are a couple of famous ones along Maxwell Road and they’re all super delicious. It’s healthy as well – at least we like to think so.”

Popping by for her photo shoot in an ensemble that screams rocker chic, Sonia exudes a warm presence that ironically contradicts what she was wearing. But it wasn’t until the interview that we realised our cover girl has a killer personal brand: witty, feisty, and unapologetically herself. And it’s her natural sense of exhibitionism and willingness to be real that sets her apart from everyone else. She may not be your average role model, but there’s certainly a lot to learn from her. Sitting down with Sonia, we pick her brain about her off-air personality, on-air adventures and everything in between. Hair and makeup: Adelene Siow/PaletteInc using Urban Decay

Photography: Justin Loh Art direction: Aris Lai and Arissa Ha Styling: Sharon Tan

Sonia Nicola Chew is Singapore’s modernday renaissance woman: the 987FM DJ has been taking over the radio, the telly, and the Internet – armed with an onigiri headgear, no less – not to mention the cover of this very issue. As one of the youngest presenters on local English radio, the 23-year-old is already living the dreams of many, and has an inspiring resume of work that makes her exceptional beyond her years. When she’s not saturating the airwaves, rubbing shoulders with celebrities or hosting big-ticket events, Sonia’s the goofy girl-next-door that we can all relate to.

What is something people don’t usually know about you?

I’m an open book – what you see on my Instagram (@SoniaChew) is already a reflection of my personality. I don’t really hide anything, but I’m rather quiet outside of work. I enjoy my alone time, and I don’t actually mind eating lunch on my own. Unlike those who have 9 to 5 jobs, I tend to end early sometimes so I’ll just grab lunch myself (laughs). Perhaps it’s because I’m getting older and all my friends are also growing up. It seems only a few years ago that we were in university, and now we are all working adults. It’s pretty bizarre.

What about the one that you hate to admit, but is actually kind of true about yourself?

I’m career-driven. (Laughs)

Putting your radio personality aside, are you more of a talker or a listener?

H.A.N.G.O.U.T Parkland Green, East Coast Park “It’s a cool place to chill on a weekend when it’s not too crowded, plus they’ve got solid drinks and food options.”

What is the biggest misconception the public has about you?

That I’m very rebellious. I’m actually not! A lot of people used to draw similarities between me and Rozz, but we’re super different – she’s cynical, I’m optimistic. I may look unfriendly and fierce at first impression, but I’m really okay once you get to know me!

What is one stereotype that you dislike about the ‘typical’ Singaporean girl?

I’ve always heard people saying that Singaporean girls are so materialistic and career-driven, to the point where they don’t care about anything else. Contrary to popular belief, I feel that they’re just trying to strike a balance. I have friends who are facing similar problems, but at the same time they’re really just longing for a relationship or a life outside of work.

75

I’m definitely a talker amongst my friends, but it goes both ways. They seem to have this perception that since I have such a fun job, I must have a gazillion stories to tell, but it’s funny because I work alone most of the time and politics don’t occur as often as those who work in an office environment.

You previously co-hosted The Wake Up Call with Joakim Gomez, what’s the biggest difference between working with him and doing it alone?

Back then, it was fun because you have someone to laugh at your bad jokes, or

b.r.a.n.d mash-up “All their clothes fit me perfectly. They understand the Asian form and it’s unique because they infused a mix of Japanese culture and their own personality into the designs.”

Royal Wedding By Meg Cabot

Mia Thermopolis is back and she’s all grown up. Just when she’s getting hitched to her high-school sweetheart Michael Thermopolis and so close to her happily-ever-after, her dad decides to surprise her with even more family secrets. In true Mia fashion, she decides to take matters into her own hands to fix the big mess, but of course, we all know that never really works out well… For those who’ve read the Princess Diaries series, this one is definitely for you.

The Girls By Lisa Jewell

Don’t be fooled by its pretty cover, this read’s on the dark mysterious side so dive into its pages if you’re a fan of thrillers! Two young girls and their mom have just moved into a new flat in an attempt to escape their mentally unstable dad. While the new house seems like a safe haven at first, they quickly come to realise that danger awaits them at every turn when one of the girls is attacked and left for dead in the corner of their communal garden…

Fantastic Four

6

Aug

For those who think that this is just another remake of the Marvel cult classic, think again. This reboot is an all-new adaptation of the Fantastic Four movie in 2005, and while it has elements of its predecessor, the script is not based off any existing storyline. In this version, scientist Reed Richards’ (Miles Teller) new invention opens a portal to an alternate dimension where he and his three friends gain superpowers. The four then have to find a way to harness their newfound ability in order to save the Earth from a former friend-turned-enemy.

Crow Moon By Anna Mckerrow

16-year old Danny is just an ordinary boy. Only concerned with girls and getting wasted, he couldn’t really be bothered with the (dystopian) world around him. But when his community is threatened by external forces, he is forced to take on the challenges, drawing on magical powers that he never knew he had within him. Of course, it helps that he’s got the aid of a bewitching sorceress beside him. Now if only she’d just fall in love with him…

Mr Holmes

6

Aug

Sir Ian McKellen gives a poignant and touching performance as the long-retired Sherlock Holmes, who is haunted by a case that he had failed to solve. Disappointed by his expartner Watson’s account of his ventures, Holmes sets out to write his own account of the events, but is hampered by his deteriorating memory. With the help of his housekeeper’s young son, he revisits the circumstances of his last unsolved case, and seeks closure to the years-old mystery.

In this comedy flick, everything that can go wrong really does go wrong when dad Rusty Grisworld (Ed Helms) tries to bring his family together in a crosscountry road trip. Inspired by his happy childhood memories of his trip to the ‘Walley World Amusement Park’, Rusty attempts to recreate the experience with his own family. But of course, nothing goes according to plan when you’ve got a group of unwilling participants, and the family ends up in a series of misadventures instead – including one where they mistake a sewage dumping ground for a hot spring… (How does that even happen?!)

Vacation

In the year 1982, NASA launched a time capsule containing images of everyday life on Earth in an attempt to reach out to alien life forms. But the aliens misconstrued video feeds of our classic arcade games as an open invite for war and have sent down gigantic versions of them to annihilate our world. (Bizarre much?) To combat the video game characters, President Will Cooper (Kevin James) calls upon his childhood best friend (Adam Sandler) to help save humanity from the voracious appetite of Pacman and other assorted videogame baddies. See mom? Video games can save the world!

No Place in Heaven – Mika

The fourth studio album of the Lebanese-British singer and songwriter, No Place in Heaven, shows MIKA at his pop best. Like his previous three albums, this one features MIKA’s signature bright melodies – which belie the surprisingly heavy content of his lyrics. Look out for ‘Last Party’, a slow ballad that was written in tribute to Queen’s Freddie Mercury, of whom the singer is a fan of.

Inside out

27

Aug

It’s been two years since the last Pixar film was out in theatres, but the team behind Pixar looks set to make our wait worth it with Inside Out, a film about well, our feelings. In the mind of a young girl named Riley, five emotions – Joy, Sadness, Fear, Disgust and Anger – guide her actions and memories with the help of a control console. When Sadness unintentionally changes a happy memory, she and Joy get lost in Riley’s long-term memories and must find a way out before the rest of the emotions make Riley an emotional wreck.

Complete – BtoB

If you haven’t already heard of BtoB, boy have you been missing out. Despite this being their first full-length album since their debut, it’s easy to see why they’ve managed to top several music charts. Much like its name suggests, Complete’s got a little bit of everything. But what we loved best were their smooth R&B ballads, which perfectly showed off their singing chops and left us wanting for more.

95

The Crazy Ones – Chord Hsieh

The latest offering from Chord Hsieh cements his reputation as Taiwan’s resident bad boy in music. And it seems that he has a lot to prove, having been absent from the scene for a good four years. The 14-track album is heavy on his rap-centric rock tunes, and although it takes a while for us to get used to his sweet voice belting out harsh melodies, his songs get strangely addictive and you’ll find yourself hitting the replay button over and over again.

Quiz

Are You A

Cheapskate?

Are you a penny-pinching cheapskate or careless spendthrift? Find out which category you fall under! By Cara Wong

mostly

Cheapskate Alert!

Honey, we hate to break it to you but you’re the S ultimate cheapskate. Sure you might think you’re saving a lot of money, but when that second-hand skirt you got from the flea market tears for the umpteenth time, you’ll realise that it’s wiser to spend a little bit more for quality than to source for the cheapest item. Learn to distinguish what makes a buy worth it, and you’ll find that it all pays off in the long run (plus nobody likes a scrooge).

A

1. When you see goodie bags… your first reaction is: a) OMG FREE STUFF, eh give me yours too!

b) Oooh, looks fun let’s see what goodies are in there.

c) Meh… such a waste of space. 2. What pens do you use? a) Er… I can’t tell but it was a free gift from a goodie bag! I have 10 more at home!

b) A refillable pen which I’ve been using for years.

c) Can’t remember actually, I change pens whenever I feel like it.

3. When it comes to shopping, the most common phrase you’d say is: a) “You will not believe how much I saved. It was a steal!”

Photo: Getty images

b) “I don’t need to buy anything yet. My things still work fine.” c) “Er… I can’t remember how much they cost.”

4. Your clothes tend to be: a) Hand-me-downs or bought from thrift stores and flea markets.

b) Long-lasting threads that may or may not be branded, but hey you look stylish either way!

c) Designer stuff of course – as long as you look good, price is of no concern.

5. A friend wants to borrow some money from you. What is your response? a) Hell no. What do you mean you’ll return it on time, I’m broke enough as it is.

b) I guess I can spare him/her

mostly

You value the importance of money, and that’s why S you tend to spend and save wisely. You don’t splurge on useless knick-knacks, but you wouldn’t mind spending once in a while if something catches your fancy. That is, after you’ve done your due research to make sure you’re getting the best bargain for its quality. Good job! A little here and there will go a long way to keeping your wallet fat and healthy.

b

some cash, shall we work out a payment plan?

c) Take whatever you need. Don’t worry about repaying me!

6. You over-ordered at McDonald’s and ended up with too much food. What do you do? a) Ask for a bag and stuff your leftovers in it, along with truckloads of serviettes and condiments. It’s self-service anyway!

b) Pack the unfinished fries in a bag. Soggy fries are still edible right?

c) Takeaways? Don’t be ridiculous. Also McDonald’s? Who still eats there?

106

Frugal Friend

mostly

Spendthrift

Everyone loves generous people, especially if it S means free things for them. It’s good to be generous, but make sure you’re not going overboard with all that frivolous spending! Money doesn’t come easy, so it’s better to exercise some thought when making your purchase, especially on big-ticket items. Separate your needs from your wants – know when to loosen the purse strings and when to tighten them. And no, you do not need an extra pair of kicks.

DearKelly Happy National Day to the staff & readers of Teenage Dear readers,

Singapore will be celebrating 50 years as a nation in August. I clearly remember Singapore’s first National Day celebrations – everyone stood proudly as one people,

one nation, one Singapore!

I encourage you and your family to be present at as many celebratory functions as possible, armed with your mobile phones or cameras. Yes, do take many photos.

Create an album that will be a precious reminder of what you saw and experienced in 2015. I’m sure the fireworks will be especially interesting this year. I’m very excited as I went to the first National Day Parade with friends but we were a long way off from the centre of activities. This year, I will view the parade from the patio of the clubhouse in front of the historic Padang. I have invited close friends to join me on this momentous occasion, and ours will be a three-generation celebration force armed with cameras, video equipment and smartphones.

Singapore has come a long way since independence when some classmates lived in atap huts without electricity or running water. I lived in Frankel Estate and across the road was the Siglap kampong. As I rode around on my bicycle, I saw people washing clothes at a standpipe located along the dirt tracks. Some classmates had to do their homework with the aid of kerosene lamps. The light wasn’t very good but they plodded on knowing no alternative. Naturally, they were so excited when they moved into

their brand new HDB flat and proudly invited us over. The streets were very narrow in those days and it took a long time to reach school if you lived far from your chosen secondary school. Life was simpler

then and we enjoyed going to the nearby school field to play games like rounders, hopscotch and yes, even girls played football. Bowling alleys and our first fast-food restaurant were the talk of the town. Television was not a round-the-clock affair like today. The news was in all four languages and there was one programme for each language group daily in black and white. People who didn’t own a TV went to the community centre to watch programmes on large outdoor screens. It looked like a picnic each night. I know because I used to help out at the old Siglap Community Centre. Most people bought food from hawkers that either walked or cycled around the kampongs and housing estates. We regularly heard the ‘tick-tock’ sound

of bamboo sticks being knocked together to herald the approach of the

any movie – one week it was a Chinese movie, the next a Malay movie and an English movie another time. We knew all the actors by name.

We saw Singapore develop into a nation that I used to boast in national debates was “the envy of the region”. It was a magical transformation. We witnessed the opening of shopping centres, international hotels, and sports facilities. There was a surge in public transport and the general population began owning their own flats, cars, the latest gadgets and household appliances that we take for granted today. In the 1960s, few homes could afford the luxury of a phone. Mobile phones were a distant dream. People went to make calls at the public telephone booths located along roadsides – yes, it was inconvenient. In the 1960s, we went to tea dances with groups of friends, and to the Singapore Badminton Hall to see international stars like Cliff Richard perform to groups of screaming hysterical teenagers. We also enjoyed watching local bands perform. Football was ever popular.

‘mee’ man. There were hawkers selling

And of great national pride was the yearly National Day Parade. Everyone came out to celebrate. I am filing this

eagerly awaited the arrival of the ice cream man who would ride past ringing his bell. Going to the movies was a popular way to spend the weekend and kids rushed to theatres early to chope seats by tying handkerchiefs to the armrests. Yes, this was the beginning of Singapore’s unique chope culture. The kachang man was a fixture outside every cinema hall and he did a roaring trade. Kids were not particular, we saw

I encourage you to take the opportunity to be a part of the big SG50 celebrations with family and friends like I will be doing, all decked out in red and white. Happy National Day to everyone. Always here for you.

My sister’s late night dates Hey Kelly, you must help me. I don’t know whom to talk to. My classmate said, “Write to Dear Kelly” and so I am doing it. My friend advised me to tell you everything. I am in primary five and my sister, who is 17, shares a room with me. It used to be great fun as she would play dress up with me and let me wear her clothes and makeup. She’d tell me stories and show me Teenage. I’d cut out all the pretty pictures. It’s sad Kelly. Three month ago everything changed.

My sister has started to leave the house when my parents go to bed.

When she saw me, she grabbed my arm and threatened that she would “beat me” if I told my parents. I asked where she went, she angrily replied, “None of your business”. Now I see her leave the room at least three times a week on Monday, Wednesday and Friday.

I am so scared. Where is she going? What is she doing? I pretend to sleep. I am afraid of her. She has changed.

At first she said she was “going downstairs to study”. I believed her. One night, I couldn’t sleep so I went to be with her. She was nowhere to be

Please tell me what to do. I am very worried. What if something bad happens to her? God bless you.

Then show your parent this article. It explains everything

clearly. Your parent will take it from here.

Here’s what to do:

1

Decide if mum or dad would handle this information better.

Choose the calmer one to speak to. Make this clear: say you are sharing this information because you are worried

3

I think the best thing to do is to tell your parent to wait in a dark place at around 10.30pm when she usually leaves the room and catch her red-handed. You will be saved from being involved. I hope it all turns out okay. God bless you.
