Tech

iTravel Essentials Swipe those flight-booking apps and local maps aside – these unconventional apps could make your next trip abroad a fuss-free affair. By Bryan Yeong

Rebtel

Tripr

Free, Available on Apple iTunes App Store and Google Play Store

Think of Tripr as a networking app for solo travellers that’ll help you get in touch with your wanderlust. Whether you need help navigating an unfamiliar territory or are simply looking to make new friends at an upcoming local festival, this social app helps you connect with fellow globetrotters to share the experience with. After all, what would seeing the world be without human company?

PackPoint

Free, Available on Apple iTunes App Store and Google Play Store

TunnelBear

Free, Available on Apple iTunes App Store and Google Play Store

If you’re scatterbrained and tend to procrastinate on packing for your holiday, PackPoint will work wonders. All you need to do is enter your destination, indicate if you’re visiting for work or leisure as well as any activities you’ve planned, and leave the packing list to the app! It also lets you check off items once you’ve sorted them, and informs you of the weather forecast so you won’t risk over or under-packing. Now you won’t have to rush for your next flight!

We all know the importance of staying connected while overseas, but blindly connecting to unknown Wi-Fi hotspots can pose threats to your online security. To avoid sensitive information (including passwords and bank account details) from being compromised, get the TunnelBear app to protect your data via a VPN (Virtual Private Network) so you can surf the net with ease of mind. The free version only offers 500MB per month, but that should be more than sufficient for a quick use on the go.

16

Free, Available on Apple iTunes App Store and Google Play Store

Don’t waste money getting a SIM card to make calls when travelling. Download Rebtel instead, which requires no Internet to connect your call to literally anywhere in the world via phone lines instead of Wi-Fi. New users get their first three minutes free of charge, and the rates are reasonably low thereafter. So be it contacting your travel buddy after getting separated or making urgent calls back home, you can now bid farewell to shelling out big bucks for a short phone call.

Authentic Weather

TouchNote

$2.98, Available on Apple iTunes App Store and Google Play Store

Sky Guru

Free, Available on Apple iTunes App Store

Aerophobia (the fear of flying) is more common than you’d think. Which is why Sky Guru looks to quell jitters by giving users in-depth explanations of flight ongoings based off professional aviation data. Described as “flying next to an experienced pilot”, the app will help you attain a better understanding of your surroundings in-flight, making even turbulance a less stressful experience. You’ve got this!

Free, Available on Apple iTunes App Store and Google Play Store

Ever felt tired of your family and friends asking you what the weather’s like while you’re on vacay? We’ve all been there, so give them a different kind of response the next time they approach you with the same old conversation filler. The Authentic Weather app prides itself in being brutally honest, channeling our inner thoughts about a sweltering day out or subzero degrees with amusing text filters. And you can also use the camera function to layer your text over a photo of the current weather situation. Some of the app’s results can be expletive-laden, so be careful who (and where) you’re sharing it with.

Cool Cousin

Free, Available on Apple iTunes App Store

Doing touristy activities can get cliché so live like a true local on your next trip by using Cool Cousin to discover hidden gems only a local would know. Discover hipster food joints, off-kilter thrift shops and local festivities straight from helpful folks residing in your destination of choice. Who knows, you could even make a new friend in the process! The app is only available in select countries for now, but they’re working on an expansion real soon.

17

Staying in touch with your loved ones while overseas is simple with today’s technology, but why not make it extra special by sending a postcard their way? With TouchNote, you’ll be able to design and send thoughtful postcards to remind your family how dearly they’re missed – effortlessly from your phone. Once you confirm a design, the app will print and send a postcard to the address stated for a small fee. You can even edit existing photos from your phone, so you won’t need to spend time browsing for an appropriate postcard at a physical store.

Tech

For Memory’s Sake Keep your adventures picture-perfect to last a lifetime with these portable tech offerings. By Bryan Yeong

Although bulkier, the Canon SELPHY CP120 ($199) makes up for its cumbersome size with additional features that give it an edge over other contenders. Enjoy the freedom of transferring photos straight from your camera, SD card or USB stick, and having your print-outs come in different sizes – from postcards to collages! Plus, it has a 2.7-inch built-in screen that allows you to preview your custom-sized photos, leaving no room for error.

Forget heading to a photo printing store! Introducing the HP Sprocket ($199), a funsized pocket printer that lets you print out photos in your phone gallery or social media accounts, giving you instant memories wherever, whenever. That’s not even the best part – the prints are smudgeproof, tear-resistant and can even be made into fancy stickers!

Impossible Project’s Impossible I-1 ($465) analog instant camera makes staying true to Polaroid’s original format possible. At first glance, you’d be bowled over by the sleek design and unique shape – but that’s only scratching the surface of its capabilities. This reinvented camera marries the best of both old and new worlds, combining newgeneration technology such as smartphone control via Bluetooth connection with oldschool features like the pop-up viewfinder and the stylish LED ring flash lens. Truly #Lit!

18

If you’ve always wanted to post a scan of your polaroid to Instagram but never enjoyed cropping it to a square format, you’re in luck. The latest Fujifilm instax SQUARE SQ10 ($499) is the first-ever hybrid instant camera, boasting a 1:1 aspect ratio format along with a plethora of filters, shooting modes and editing functions to give you the option of enhancing your shots before printing them out.

Can’t decide between staying instant or going digital? Let the Polaroid Pop (price unavailable) answer that. Available in dashing hues of red, yellow and classic white, this dual-function gem has a 20-megapixel capture efficiency and 1080p full HD video recording capability. Having the option to switch seamlessly between shooting videos to capturing pictures will come in handy for any traveller, making this soonto-be-launched tech candy definitely something to look forward to.

You don’t need an instant camera to print snaps when there’s the new Prynt Pocket ($150 USD) to help turn your very own smartphone into one itself. On top of having a GIF-like video attached to printed photos that are viewable via the Prynt app to make for greater memories, the device doubles up as a phone case and is slimmer than its original predecessor. Need we say more?

Vintage camera fans, rejoice! Leica has released their first-ever instant camera, the Leica Sofort ($460) to much fanfare – and it doesn’t disappoint. Not only is the price much more walletfriendly than original Leicas, its compact size and alternative look make it a hipster shutterbug’s dream. Film options come in both black and white as well as colour, but quite possibly the most attractive feature is the practical ‘self-portrait’ function that makes all your future selfie shots flaw-free.

19

The Lomo’Instant Automat Cabo Verde (from $235) is perfect for summer just from its design – a striking pop of green with a dash of dots. Up your instant photography game with interchangeable close-up, wide-angle and fisheye lens, offered in the lens combo package to give you full creative control over your images. Top it off by experimenting with different Color Gels to brighten up your mood shots.

For more adventurous portable printer colour variants, opt for the Polaroid ZIP Mobile Printer ($199) which comes in bright shades of red and blue in addition to the classic black and white options. Fullcoloured printouts are literally at the tip of your fingers, easily accessible from your phone via Bluetooth connection. While you can’t edit your images on the device, its ZINK (short for ‘zero ink’) paper concept gives you quality, smudgefree print outs with a sticky back, perfect for scrapbook enthusiasts.

Sunrise Glow An effortless day look that uses only two shades, start off by dusting on the burnt orange hue as a base and lightly blending it over the eyes and lower lids. Keeping close to the lash line, follow up by subtly lining the eyes with gold eyeshadow. Layering a gold shade over the orange adds depth while creating a warm and flattering pop of colour. Skip out on harsh eyeliner and load up on mascara instead.

Evolve – Imagine Dragons

After a short hiatus that allowed frontman Dan Reynolds to battle and overcome his personal demons, our favourite Las Vegas rockers are back with a more “colourful” third album. Hoping to erase the stigma around depression, lead single ‘Believer’ is an anthem about finding meaning in pain experienced, and it’s definitely one to put on repeat anytime life knocks you down. Thanks, Imagine Dragons!

Last Young Renegade – All Time Low

Not many acts can change up their sound and get away with it, but All Time Low is a band that can, and does – proving their limitless talent once again with their seventh studio album. One major highlight is ‘Dirty Laundry’, a pop-rock number that goes slightly off-kilter with EDM-infused nuances. We don’t know if this new sound is gonna be permanent or fleeting, but we definitely approve!

13 jul

War For The Planet Of The Apes

Shangri-La – VIXX

A continuation of the events from Dawn of the Planet of the Apes, Caesar and his apes are in the midst of a deadly conflict with the human military led by a ruthless special ops soldier. Despite being armed with makeshift weapons and automatic rifles, the apes still find themselves suffering heavy losses after the first battle. Wanting to avenge his kind, Caesar finally comes face-to-face with The Colonel in an epic battle of man versus ape – but which race will prevail?

Known in the K-pop scene for their mindblowing concepts, VIXX continues to impress with their latest comeback inspired by the Chinese fable The Peach Blossom Spring – armed with traditional hand fans, oriental suits and tasselled ornaments. We especially love their overall softer sound throughout the album, truly highlighting their vocal capabilities in a way that some of their earlier tracks weren’t able to do. Give ‘Almost There’ and ‘To Us’ a spin and you’ll see exactly what we mean.

Jetiquette Flying for the first time? To help make your virgin flight experience a fuss-free one, follow these tips to keep your airplane etiquette in check. By Charis Chiang

To Recline Or Not To Recline? While you certainly have the right to recline your seat – especially when travelling for long hours or through the night, be mindful not to throw your seat so far back that you risk spilling over any drinks or colliding with the knees of the passenger behind. Practice the courtesy of alerting said person in advance that you’d be leaning back so they can get any items out of the way.

Off With The Metal Here’s a tip – make sure you’ve emptied pockets of loose change, belt buckles, accessories and other metal objects that may set off the metal detector while waiting in line at airport security checkpoints. That way, you won’t have to fumble around to separate your possessions while holding up the queue!

Keep Calm & (Don’t) Hog On Fighting for space in the overhead compartments is an inevitable war. Let’s face it: nobody wants to go through the hassle of checking luggage, and that leads to unruly passengers smashing their bulky carry-ons into the overhead bin without regard about potentially damaging the belongings of others. Make it a point to adhere to the airline’s cabin baggage sizing guidelines and chuck smaller bags below your seat to avoid taking up overhead space. For those having a brief stop in the waiting area, don’t hog the seats with coats or bags. You may reserve one or two seats for your group, but it’s only polite to give it up for others if the area starts filling up, especially for the elderly, pregnant women and families with small kids.

69

Turn Down The Volume We’ve all been there: people making phone calls at 30,000 feet in the air, speaking at the top of their voices and blasting music at full volume when you’re trying to get some shut-eye. Don’t be the one guilty of this – keep conversations to a low whisper and take note of the volume on your electronic devices to avoid disrupting your neighbours. You don’t want ‘em calling in a flight attendant to fix the situation!

Patience Is A Virtue Hey buddy, are you in a rush? Unless you’re on a private jet or have other practical reasons, avoid making a beeline for the exit as soon as the plane lands to allow passengers in the front rows to alight first. In fact, making your departure in an orderly manner helps to speed up the process sans the squeezing and pushing. Let’s keep it classy, folks!

Volunteering

Without Borders Lam Dong, Vietnam

Giving back can bring new adventures – take it from Singapore Polytechnic (SP) students Ian Tang and May Su Paing who ventured overseas to help the underprivileged and returned with more than just stamps on their passports.

What really struck Ian Tang Jia Ming, a graduate from the Diploma in Aerospace Electronics who embarked on a community service trip to Lam Dong Province, was how they go through every day with positivity and strength, despite having only the barest of necessities. During his time there, Ian had the opportunity to interact It was hard to say goodbye with the local kids while teaching them basic English. In to all the friends Ian had spite of language barriers and cultural differences, they made at Lam Dong! would put in their best effort to communicate with him and participate in class activities. Who knew volunteering could bring him such a rewarding experience? “This trip has allowed me to see things from a different perspective. Being away from home made me realise the things that we take for granted.”

Maubin, Myanmar

What is SP GoServe? Under the GoServe programme, SP students are offered opportunities to participate in overseas community service projects, where they will play the role of a socially-responsible citizen as they take charge of their own learning.

For May Su Paing, a Diploma in Media and Communication student, this trip back to her homeland was an unexpected eye-opener. Despite being a Burmese native, she had little confidence in reaching out to the children there. But all her doubts were dispelled after the first day and she soon found herself interacting with them without a problem. Aside from conducting English lessons, May also acted as a translator between her teammates and the locals. During this trip, she took the initiative to make insightful conversations with everyone around her – even the cooks who prepared their meals – thus gaining a deeper understanding of the local people and community. “It was truly an eye-opener that made me realise that everyone has a story to tell. Definitely an experience I will never forget!”

His Destiny An emerging artist now living and creating in Perth, we follow Rainer Goh’s journey as he exhibits his passion while leaving footprints across the globe. By Chew Hui Ling

You may be curious, how does one make a living off art? Just ask Rainer Goh, an up-and-coming artist who’s striking it out on his own in Perth, Australia. “Perth is one of the last places you’d associate with a thriving arts hub, but this is where I’ve met some of the most driven individuals who’ve inspired me to not only grow as a creative, but as a person,” he shares. The 26-year-old dabbles in highly stylised, realist paintings inspired by contemporary illustrations – and when he’s not showcasing his strokes of genius on canvas, the homegrown artist can be found running a boutique gallery. We caught up with Rainer as he discusses his honest thoughts on the local arts scene and how he’s making a name for himself abroad.

How did you get started in art? I’ve been exposed to art since I was a kid. My mother, who’s an artist turned art teacher, is always there to feed me with knowledge and aid me in my growth as an artist. I remember she used to teach me about human proportions through mangas and would buy loads of fine art magazines for me to read up on. It was through my mother’s efforts and love that I discovered artists whom I now look up to as well.

to host exhibitions, liaise with emerging and established artists, assist with customer service etc. I work very closely with my director and mentor, who is a master framer and an amazing businessman. Under his guidance, I’ve learned how to get an art gallery running from the ground up. As a small business, every day at work comes as a surprise as there are always new things to learn. Today, I took a break from organising logistics to participate in a framing workshop, where I was showed how to do framing conservation.

Now that you’re striking it out in Australia, what’s a typical day at work like for you? I work as a gallery manager at Studio 281, which is an art gallery and picture framer in Perth. I take charge of all the logistics involved

What are your thoughts on the local art scene, and how does it differ from Perth? The contemporary art scene in Singapore is strong, and has an undeniable influence on the industry at large. The infrastucture

76

is in place and many good seeds are being planted, but ironically, there’s something about our culture that constricts the growth of many young creatives. On the other hand, Perth is like a sproutling that’s beginning to shoot. For the past years, government bodies have been pouring in massive grants to promote art. We get lots of fresh ideas from passionate individuals who want to make a change and we’re all on the same page that Perth will have a thriving art scene within the next decade. What’s an artwork you’re most proud of? I’m currently working on a series that features portraits of iconic Muay Thai fighters done in a video game aesthetic and I aim to have them put up as motivational posters at local fight gyms. It’s a project that ties in with the two things I love – painting and Muay Thai. I go to work excited to start on it and go home looking forward to facing new challenges! What were you doing before pursuing this path? Before travelling, I was slogging it out at an admin job and attending figure

drawing art classes after work. While Singapore is and always will be my home, I knew from a young age that it wasn’t the ideal place for me to grow professionally and creatively. Back then, I used to do commissions for private and commercial purposes, but now I’m at the stage where I’m taking it all back and making sure my art is mine again; not for anyone else but myself. As an artist, it’s something very personal to me and I couldn’t be happier. Was it tough making a living out of your passion? I wouldn’t say it’s easy, but it’s not impossible. There are definitely struggles I’ve had to face, but it’s been a fruitful experience thus far. In my humble opinion, I feel that money comes to you when you serve the needs of others, which can be provided through a creative service, and this makes a world of difference between a starving creative and a successful one. Have you had any memorable experiences during your time abroad? Picking mulberries at a friend’s vineyard in Australia – just imagine climbing trees, tossing mulberries

77

down to your buddies’ baskets and playing with dogs on the vast fields of a spring morning. Sometimes, it’s these little things that make the biggest impact because we rarely experience them in Singapore. What are the top three things on your bucket list now? Make more art, run a killer art show for Australian artist Anthony Lister at our art gallery, and most importantly, doing the simple things in life that matter most. What are some of the important takeaways you’ve had after embarking on this journey? I’ve gained the confidence to take things in my own hands and see it through. This journey has taught me how to take full control of my life, and not just set it cruising on auto-pilot. What advice would you give to those who aspire to carve a career overseas? Just do it! The world is vast – simply going on an exchange programme abroad alone would open a ton of doors for you. Even if finances don’t allow, there are also plenty of grants and sponsorships available to help you get started.

21 May – 20 Jun Ever the social butterfly, your calendar has been filling up with invitations to social gatherings. But before you RSVP to every single one, be careful to not over-commit yourself, lest you end up burning out even before the events get into full swing. Don’t worry if you have to decline any invitations, your friends will understand!

Sagittarius

Well, aren’t you the charitable Virgo? Riding high on good fortune you’ve received during the previous month, now’s the best time to pay it forward. Be it caring for strays at an animal shelter, feeding the less fortunate at your local soup kitchen, or speaking out on a cause you’re passionate about, your small act of kindness will go a long way in making a difference!

New crush alert! Ever the charmer, your charismatic personality has caught the eye of the new kid on the block. While it’s perfectly fine to engage in a bit of harmless flirting, be mindful not to lead the other party on – the last thing you want is to send the wrong signals when you’ve no intention of moving him/her out of the friend zone.

With friends always coming to you for advice on their problems, you can’t help but feel a tad stretched thin trying to help everyone out in a bid to be polite. Learn to say no without feeling guilty and try setting boundaries as to when you want to be available. Allowing yourself some ‘me-time’ will also help you to recharge your batteries – it’s time to be kind to yourself.

79

Having to juggle between a hectic academic life and a jam-packed social calendar has left you with barely any time for your loved ones at home. If you find yourself neglecting family commitments recently, it’s not too late to make up for lost time. Big gestures aren’t needed; simply catching up on what’s been going on in your respective lives will be more than enough.

Hooray Cap! Your hard work over the past couple of months has finally paid off, and it’s time to reward yourself for a job well done. Be it indulging in a spa session, enjoying a fancy meal, or calling upon the squad for a big night out on the town, go ahead and treat yourself in the best way possible. You deserve it!

Feeling restless from your monotonous routine and longing for a change of pace? Why not try your hand at a new hobby or pick up a new skill this month? From signing up for a cooking class at your neighbourhood community centre or joining an adventure club in school, your options are endless. And hey, you might even gain a new friend or two to last a lifetime.
