Ed's Note LOVING THIS MONTH:

Hi everyone,

Cult fave Hope In A Jar by philosophy gets a reformulation to give your skin an even healthier, radiant glow. The philosophy Renewed Hope In A Jar ($62) has a triple blend of AHAs (mandelic, glycolic and citric acid) to gently exfoliate it while hyaluronic acid provides and locks in moisture for all-day hydration.

What an awesome time to live in! As someone who grew up just as the Internet became widely available (anyone here remembers 56kbps dial-up? No? #OkayCan), I saw its full effects come into play

especially when it came to seeking information. There’s no need to head over to the library for research (and lament when someone else has loaned the book you wanted), and you can Google anything with just

your mobile phone. As time went by, social media took charge and offered everyone a level playing field – we’re talking about regular Joes and Janes becoming famous (or infamous) through their talents (or lack thereof), without having to go through auditions after auditions.

Dreams are possible when you try hard enough! This month, we celebrate social media and everything about it. There are helpful

tips on how you can improve your #foodstagram posts (p. 98), dealing with social media envy (p. 102) and even an interview with local YouTubers Night Owl Cinematics (p. 90). Although there’s plenty of cool stuff to do

online, don’t forget to head out during the

school holidays. Check out the fashion and

beauty sections for cool summer style tips, how to get great looking hair and more. Enjoy your June holidays everyone!

ADVERTORIAL

WE’RE ALL FAMILIAR WITH THIS – IT’S THE DAY BEFORE YOUR BIG DATE, BIRTHDAY OR BIG EVENT, AND A PIMPLE DECIDES TO POP UP. HERE’S WHY YOU SHOULD USE THE NEXCARE ACNE PATCHES TO GET RID OF THE ZITS!

Reason #1:

No more stains on your pillows Some of us tend to move around while we sleep, and the constant rubbing might burst your pimples and stain your pillowcase (and it’s super gross when all the dirt and grime from your hair gets on the open wounds). Protect your pimples from abrasion and infection with the Nexcare Acne Patches.

Reason #3:

No more squeezing! The Nexcare Acne Patches effectively absorbs pus and sebum, without breaking the skin. Just leave it on (the Acne Patch Thinner is only 0.01cm thick and looks almost invisible under makeup) and let it do its work. Once the patch turns white, you can change to a fresh one so that it can continue working its magic.

Reason #2:

No touchy! There’s bacteria on our hands and touching your pimple will introduce it to your pimples, risking infection (yikes!). The Nexcare Acne Patches form a protective later between the pimple and external pollutants, while allowing it to heal properly.

Reason #4:

No more dryness Pimple creams contains ingredients which dries pimples out, but they end up causing dryness on the skin around the pimple as well. The Nexcare Acne Patches aid pimple healing without dehydrating the skin. Say goodbye to flaking skin!

Choose from a variety of Nexcare Acne Patches for both men and women. For the ladies, there’s the Nexcare Acne Patch Ladies 36s for regular use at home or at night. There’s also the NexcareAcne Patch Thinner 30s which is only 0.03cm thin for use during the day. For the men, there’s the Nexcare Acne Patch Mens 30s and 18s.

NEXCARE ACNE PATCHES ($4.95-$8.20) ARE AVAILABLE AT ALL GUARDIAN AND WATSONS STORES

DIY Tech Accessories Jazz up your blah-looking gadgets with these simple DIY tutorials. #TotalDoable By johanna teo

LG Pocket Photo printer This cool design was made entirely of washi tapes. Simply stick on the designs you fancy and carefully trim to fit. Don’t forget to cut out holes for the indication lights.

Chain Camera Strap

Photography: Justin Loh Craft: Arissa Ha, Johanna Teo Styling: Aris Lai, Johanna Teo

Measure a metal chain to your preferred length and attach lobster clasps – ensure the clasps fit your camera lug – to both ends securely. Then, weave a braided synthetic leather cord through the chain links. When you’re done, simply fit a jump ring through each end of the strip and trim to size. Prevent it from fraying by either painting on clear nail polish or singe it with a lighter (be careful!).

14

LG AKA phone Jawbone UP24 Fitness Band Dress up the plain band by braiding it with black cord and metal chains. Simply thread three pieces through the band and fold the strings over it to form six strands in total. Start braiding from right to left with two pieces of cord in each section, and loop the piece closest to the band over it before starting a new braid. When you’re done, simply double knot each piece before fixing on a jump ring and trimming to fit. Put on some clear nail polish/sealant over the cords to prevent fraying and attach decorative pendants for the final finish.

You can use water-based paint markers to doodle on whatever you please, but we stencilled on the AKA phones by sticking printout alphabets on the covers and outlining ‘em. Follow up by either doing a gradient dotting technique or free hand doodling. Leave the covers to dry overnight to avoid smudging your hard work.

Laptop Skin This DIY is simple but it requires time and precision. We recommend wiping down your laptop with wet wipes and a lint-free cloth to ensure a clean and oil-free surface before starting. Peel off your marble wallpaper sticker and slowly paste it onto a laptop corner while avoiding air bubbles, doing so for all four corners. To adhere it to the curves of the laptop, slowly pull downwards on the excess while using hairdryer heat to warp the sticker to the edges. Lastly, slowly and carefully cut along the laptop with a craft knife to take off the remaining material, taking care not to scratch your laptop (or cut yourself) while doing so.

Summer

Love LET’S GET AWAY

It might be summer all year round in Singapore, but gear up for the hottest months of the year with our fave summer essentials. BY ARISSA HA

Look Great at the beach

UV damage is the number one cause of premature skin ageing, so even though you’re still in your teens, put on sunscreen religiously – your 30-year-old self will thank you for it. Your sunscreen should have a Sun Protection Factor (SPF) of 30 with PA++ rating to protect against both UVA and UVB rays. Remember to reapply every two to three hours as sunscreens photodegenerate – this means that the sun’s rays break them down, rendering them ineffective after a period of time. A little bit of tan does wonders for hiding dark spots and pigmentation, but that’s almost like pouring salt on the wound. Tanning increases melanin production, and you might end up with even more dark spots (and if you’re unlucky, some of these spots might actually be cancerous!), so keep clear of the sun’s rays and fake the tan instead. Choose from a wide array of self-tanning products, or if you prefer something a little less permanent (not to mention fool-proof), brush on some bronzer for that perfect sun-kissed look.

PHOTO: GETTY IMAGES

So you have your June holidays all planned out – basking in the sun, enjoying the sea breeze and sipping an ice-cold beverage – but before flaunting the #BeachBod you’ve worked so hard for, check out these tips for looking good at the beach.

3 4 30

Less is more when it comes to putting on makeup at the beach. Lay off the heavy eye makeup and keep the false eyelashes for the parties instead. Work on enhancing your natural beauty – groom those brows, add a peachy flush to the apple of your cheeks and wear a tinted lip balm. If you do find yourself needing more makeup than that, choose waterproof products to avoid panda eyes after exiting the sea. Sea water, wind and sun is a triple-threat for your hair, especially when they are chemically-treated. If you do enter the sea, try braiding your hair instead of just tying it up in a ponytail and risking tangles. If your hair isn’t long enough to braid, apply leave-in conditioner to give it an added coat of protection against the elements. Bring along a wide-tooth comb to detangle your hair before hitting the showers.

Sunscreen Protect your skin from premature ageing and sun damage by applying sunscreen regularly.

BIORÉ UV AQUA RICH WATERY GEL SPF50+/PA++++, $18.90

TIPS Choose sunscreen based on the intensity of the sun’s rays and the time that you’ll be spending in the sun. SHISEIDO PERFECT UV PROTECTOR SPF50+/PA++++, $59

SKIN INC HYDRATING SHIELD+, $68

BELIF ALMIGHTY SUN POWDER SPF50+/ PA+++, $43

NIVEA SUN WATER SPORT SPF 50/PA+++, $19.90 CLINIQUE EVEN BETTER CITY BLOCK ANTI-POLLUTION SPF40/PA+++, $40

Sunscreens degenerate after sun exposure, so remember to reapply every two hours or immediately after swimming. Sunscreens with both SPF and PA rating blocks off UVA and UVB rays which causes melanin production (darker skin) and skin ageing.

tressed

for success

With the amount of hair products clogging up the beauty aisle, the choices can be pretty overwhelming. Not to worry, we did the grunt work for you and rounded up the top contenders in the market. By Chew Hui Ling

Types of shampoos: Clarifying If oily hair is your main concern, a clarifying shampoo ought to do the trick. It lifts away stubborn buildup and leaves your hair squeaky clean. Just be sure to use it sparingly as it can be drying to your hair. Volumising

shampoo

Lather, rinse, repeat – how hard can shampooing be, right? There’s more to it than you think. Many of us wash our hair every single day, but we often hear the debate that three days per week is the optimum. Excessive shampooing can strip your hair of its natural oils, which prompts your scalp to generate more sebum. This of course depends on the individual, but if you’re having more bad hair days than good ones, then it may be time for a change in your routine. Shampoos come in different variants, so it’s necessary that you select one that best suits your hair type. Most shampoos produce suds, which are extremely effective at removing dirt and grime, but they can also force out the natural oils, whereas sulfate-free formulas promise a mild wash that keeps your tresses clean without drying out your scalp. It might take some getting used without all the bubbles, but your parched strands will thank you.

plus 52

Those with flat, fine hair tend to struggle with greasiness and lack of body. A volumising shampoo will help to soak up the sebum and fluff up your hair. Moisturising For dry and unruly hair, try a hydrating shampoo that can calm those flyaways. Make sure the formula’s gentle enough to not cause any more irritations to your scalp. Colour protecting Stay away from sulfate-based shampoos, which can strip your hair of its new colour and cause frizz. Instead, reach for a product that boosts vibrancy and protects your hair against sunrays.

Types of conditioners:

conditioner A hot shower can make an angry scalp even worse, so keep the temp on the cooler side.

TRESemmé Color Revitalize Shampoo, $14.90

L’Oréal Paris Elseve Total Repair 5 Shampoo, $13.90 Phytocyane Densifying Treatment Shampoo, $39.80

The Body Shop Rainforest Moisture Shampoo, $16.90

While shampoos are designed to remove build-ups, conditioners contain ingredients that restore hydration lost from your hair during the cleansing process. Think of it as moisturisers for the face. One common misconception is that using a conditioner after every wash will only make your hair greasier – not true, people! You may not have to shampoo daily, but it’s essential to always keep your strands moisturised. It fills gaps along the hair shaft, therefore softening and hydrating hair to make combing easier. However, be careful not to over-condition, which can leave a residue and cause hair to feel overly soft and limp.

Instant conditioners Rinsed through the hair to smooth tangles and add moisture. Deep conditioners Strengthens and provides damage repair for driedout tresses. Leave-in conditioners Applied to post-shower hair to keep it hydrated throughout the day, while prepping hair for styling.

Always apply conditioner from the midshaft down to the ends before using a wide-tooth comb to ensure each strand is coated. Let it sit for two to three minutes before rinsing off with cold water.

Don’t confuse a conditioner with a treatment. The latter is meant for long-term results, while a conditioner is only a superficial layer that provides temporary protection and elasticity.

The Lottery Boy by Michael Byrne

Life hasn’t been swell for Bully ever since the passing of his mother, which led to him living rough on the streets with his pup Jack. Until one day, he pulls a Charlie Bucket (ala Charlie And The Chocolate Factory) and finds a lottery ticket hidden that could change his life forever. Everybody dreams of a big lotto win, but even if Bully gets all that money, will he be winning what he needs most?

Entourage

Four years after ending its run on HBO, the Entourage gang is getting back together and they’ve invited their famous buds along for the ride: Calvin Harris, Pharrell Williams, Jessica Alba… basically everyone in Hollywood. As for Vince (Adrian Grenier) and his chums, not much has been revealed about the plot, but we do know that Ari (Jeremy Piven) is now a studio head, E (Kevin Connolly) is living happily ever after with Sloan (Emmanuelle Chriqui), and Johnny “Drama” Chase (Kevin Dillon) is well… dramatic.

The Door That Led To Where by Sally Gardner

Time travel, old keys, secret doors – as cliche these elements sound, it amazes us how Sally Gardner manages to piece them into an intriguing, page-turning plot. 16-yearold AJ used to be an ordinary boy living in the suburbs, until he finds a key that leads him back to year 1830. Although life is cheap, AJ and his friends find that their existences have so much more meaning than present-day.

The Illusionists by Laure Eve

Picking up where Fearsome Dreamer left off, The Illusionists sees teenage dreamer Rue trying to adapt in a new and unfamiliar World, where everything is merely a virtual reality. However, she soon realises that the World’s obsession with technology can have dire consequences. Despite the uncertainty, this new life holds possibilities and freedom beyond her imagination, but can Rue face up to the challenge?

Jurassic World

11

June

There’s no reason not to be psyched about this ’90s reboot – you get a Disneyworld-esque theme park where people are just chilling with the dinos, but somehow you just know it’s the lull before the storm, where the plot will flesh out into some epic Chris Pratt action. That, and the introduction of Jurassic World’s newest and most dangerous creation yet, Indominus Rex. And it looks like she (yes, it’s a she) has some plans of her own…

Seriously, who doesn’t love minions? If you’re still not over Despicable Me and Despicable Me 2, brace yourselves – because these adorable lil’ critters are coming to the silver screen, and as usual, they’re up to no good. After accidentally destroying all their masters (R.I.P Genghis Khan, Napoleon and Dracula), the minions set off in search for a new boss to serve. That’s when they meet Scarlet Overkill, a young and ambitious villainess determined to conquer the world..

Minions

On The Way To The Stars – Kenji Wu

It’s been long since we last heard from Kenji Wu, but it seems like the three-year hiatus has done the Taiwanese heartthrob good. Unlike the usual Mandopop record, On The Way To The Stars sounds more like an album fit for a veteran Brit rocker, but with the singer’s trademark emotional arc. And if you’re still hung up on Kenji and Song Ji Hyo in Chinese film 708090, look out for their uber-cute duet ‘You Are So Cute’!

Ah Yeah – EXID

Handwritten – Shawn Mendes

EXID is arguably the K-pop girl group of the moment, and they’re continuing to roll out awesome tracks with their latest EP. Ah Yeah’s exactly what you’d expect – powerful vocals, bold and brassy raps, and maddeningly catchy riffs reminiscent of their viral hit ‘Up & Down’. It was a little too short and repetitive, but we can’t deny it was a good tease.

Meet Shawn Mendes, a singersongwriter with four million fans on Vine, a long list of celebrity besties (Ed Sheeran, Nick Jonas, The Vamps… need we say more?) and a massive music career at just 16-year-old. So it’s of no surprise that his debut album exploded at #1 upon release. It’s easy to dismiss him as a typical pretty boy, but give this album a listen – you’ll realise Mendes indeed has the chops to be called a real artiste.

Terminator Genisys

Hot off the heels of Kingsman: The Secret Service, Barely Lethal turns the ‘rebellious-teenager-turned-badass-assassin’ plot backwards and channels it into the next big action-comedy flick. Yearning for a normal life, 16-year-old secret agent Megan (Hailee Steinfeld) fakes her death and disguises herself as a high school student – which ended up being her greatest challenge yet. FYI, the film also stars Samuel L. Jackson (er, hi Valentine?), Sophie Turner and Jessica Alba amongst others, so look out for ‘em!

When Arnold Schwarzenegger last used the line “I’ll be back.” in Terminator 3: Rise of the Machines, little did we know it’d take the actor a decade to make his return. Set in a new timeline, the aged Terminator teams up with Sarah Connor (Emilia Clarke) and Kyle Reese (Jai Courtney) to stop the new T-800 and T-1000 from altering the past. To make matters worse, Kyle and Sarah’s son, John Connor (Jason Clarke), has been converted into an evil human-cyborg hybrid.

Digital Your Detox Guide As much as we love our tech toys, we can all agree that we need a break from time to time. And with summer upon us, there’s no better time to go on a (digital) vacay than now! By Chew Hui Ling

Reality check: how often do you actually chat with your online buds? You may have 1,000 friends on Facebook, but the truth is you can only count the true, flesh-and-blood ones with one hand – and btw, 150 friends is the max for our brain to handle, no matter how sociable you are. So start your detox diet by deleting people who aren’t your real pals and clearing your following list.

ANNOUNCE YOUR #DIGITALDETOX In a world where everybody expects everyone else to be on call 24/7, it’s hard to be off the grid for even a few minutes. As such, it’s important to let your friends and family know that you’ll be putting your digital life on hold, but don’t shut yourself out entirely. Allow yourself a specific time frame where you’ll be online so people can contact you in times of emergency.

CREATE A ONE-DAY BUCKET LIST Save those ridiculous tasks like bungee jumping or sky diving for another day – this list is more about the things that you wish to do more of, but think you have no time for. It can be something as simple as de-cluttering your room, cooking up a storm, or even doing a full-body workout. Make it a point to not check your social media accounts until you’ve accomplished everything on the list.

BUY AN ALARM CLOCK

EMBRACE JOMO It’s easy to fall into the FOMO (fear of missing out) trap during the first few days, but you’ll soon realise that those ‘important’ notifications are not even that significant in the grand scheme of things. Gradually, you’ll experience what they call the ‘joy of missing out’, aka JOMO. Instead of obsessively refreshing your feed, use the time to do things that truly make you happy. Grab yourself some Ben & Jerry’s, pop in your fave flick and chillax!

PLAY THE PHONE-STACK GAME

Treating your smartphone as a timekeeper is a habit we’ve all grown accustomed to, making it all too convenient to sneak one last peek at our social media accounts before falling asleep. Take a cue from Huffington Post co-founder Arianna Huffington, who gifted her friends an alarm clock “so they could stop using the excuse that they needed their very tempting iPhone by their bed to wake them up in the morning”.

APP-IFY YOUR PHONE

How annoying is it to finally hang out with your pals, but all of ‘em end up being glued to their phones? Besides, social gatherings are for socialising with your friends, not Facebook. Try to establish a ‘no phones’ rule and play a lil’ game when dining out – stack all the devices face down on the table, and the first person to succumb to the temptation has to pick up the tab!

JET OFF FOR A DAY (OR TWO)

KEEP YOUR HANDS BUSY If you’re always reaching out for your phone, perhaps it’s time for an intervention. A trick is to engage yourself in activities that will keep your hands occupied so you won’t feel the itch to text or tweet. Writing in a journal, snapping pictures with a camera and attempting that cool DIY that’s been sitting on your Pinterest board, are all fun ways to get some finger exercise.

Read a book

For those who are unable to go completely cold turkey, you’ll be glad to know that there are apps like Sabbath Manifesto and Digital Detox to help you along. Oh, the irony. These apps freeze up your phone and disable you from using it till the session is over. If that’s too extreme, try Moment – it keeps your daily usage in check and alerts you when you’re about to tip over the limit.

There are two types of people in the world: those who flip the pages of a novel, and those who swipe across the screen of a Kindle. Call us oldfashioned, but it’s so much more rewarding to finish a thousand-page paperback than an e-book. Make a trip to the library and pick up some physical reads for a change. To get you started, check out our Radar section for the newest titles.

Don’t just sit at home and wallow in post-detox misery, this is the perfect opportunity to get up and go (without your gizmos)! Tranquil retreats are the best way to unplug, so stay away from tech-laden hotspots like New York. If faraway destinations are out of your budget, Singapore has plenty of offshore islands like St. John’s Island, Kusu Island and Lazarus Island that are perfect for a weekend getaway.

DearKelly Dear readers, There are two scenarios that Singaporean students face during the June holidays.

Scenario 1 – Exam fever Okay, I know those sitting for their PSLE, ‘O’ and ‘A’ levels will be attending additional classes during the holidays. Take heart. Look at it this way. You are studying for a major exam.

Your future is at stake so hit the books and promise yourself you can celebrate magnificently at the end of the year when all the exams are over! For now you must:

1

Decide that you will attend extra lessons and tutorials with a positive mindset. If you resent learning, it just makes the learning process that much more difficult. Accept that you must focus on the work at hand.

2

Getting a study buddy or being

part of a study group will help many students. A buddy or a group keeps everyone on their toes. It can be comforting to have companionship. The chances of sleeping, playing computer games, chatting on the phone can be controlled. This is how it should be. All phones off during the set study period. And no gossiping.

FOCUS! FOCUS! FOCUS!

3

You can go ahead and rest after all the day’s work has

been completed. Do what makes you happy. You are entitled to have some fun. But make sure you get at least seven hours rest. Eight hours would be better.

4

Do consult your teachers

should you have problems in any area of study. Make the most of every learning opportunity. You will score if you keep up. Never give up. Hard

Scenario 2 – Holiday makers

It can be enormous fun. Pack a picnic tea or lunch. Bring along musical instruments and song sheets for a singa-long and even have a bit of a dance if you like. You will feel energised. The fresh air will do you good.

Take this opportunity to have a wonderful holiday by hanging out with family and friends. The travellers Make the most of this opportunity to bond with the family. Treasure the opportunity to spend time with your siblings and parents. Take lots of photos. They will be prized when you grow up. If you are fortunate to travel abroad, it is a good idea to first find out as much as you can about the country or countries you will be visiting. You’ll be in control and you’ll feel a certain amount of pride that you are not ignorant about your destination(s).

Those spending the midyear holiday in Singapore There are lots of things to do in Singapore. Check out newspaper listings that highlight activities offered on a weekly basis.

d) How about a kite-flying or

sandcastle building competition?

e) How about signing up for a cooking class? You never know how good you are until you try.

f) Also of interest is a visit to the Science Centre, a trip to Gardens By The Bay or a day at the Zoo. All interesting activities.

NOTE:

No drugs, no smoking and no underage drinking. Don’t get lured into sexual activities you’ll regret. Good clean fun is what you must seek so you will have no regrets. Please keep your parents informed about your whereabouts. Always here for you.

Do you have a problem you wish to share? Something to get off your chest? Kelly’s responses take into account age, experience and needs of writers. Those writing in know and seek her tough love, nononsense approach. Readers wanting a different type of response should seek advice elsewhere. Older and more experienced readers knowing the answers to questions need to exercise patience. Not everyone knows what you know. After qualifying as a teacher, Kelly Chopard went on to attend several counselling courses. Over the past 30 years, she has been invited to sit on panels and discussion groups, give talks and has taught modules dealing with youth issues. She counsels primary and secondary school pupils. She also engages in parent-pupil counselling sessions. In the 1970s, she was a member of a People’s Association Team counselling young adults in areas like drugs, smoking and other health and social issues. From 1979 to 1983 she had a counselling column in a local woman’s magazine. Since 1996 she has been responding to Teenage readers in her Dear Kelly column.

i am a cyber bully Kelly, I am a bad person. Several months ago, I read a letter that you answered and I realised I am the bully of the victim who wrote to you. What she described is exactly what I did to her. Until I read the letter, stating what the bully does online, I was not really aware of the pain I was causing my classmate.

Actually, I am addicted to bullying online. I am ashamed to admit I have other ‘victims’. Kelly, I have decided I will stop being a cyber bully. I have to confess certain things to you. You see it is easier when you don’t look at the person you are being mean to. It is a game to me. Until I read the letter addressed to you, I just looked at what I was doing as a game.

Kelly: It is at times like this that I am so pleased I have the Dear Kelly column. It helps me see I am making a difference in people’s lives. I have to say you must

be a good person deep down inside. You read the letter and realised you were the cyber bully. For the first time you were faced with your actions. It came as a shock when you came face-to-face with your victim, even though it was in print. Up to that point, you were removed from the situation and its hurtful consequences. The pain you caused struck a chord in you when you read the results of what you had done from your victim’s point of view. This is very important. Until you put yourself in the shoes of your victim, you were uninvolved regarding the consequences of your hurtful actions. Get the point you made that to you it was “a game”. Since you did not have

Your kindness, patience and encouragement towards my victim made me make myself a promise that I will stop torturing people online. Actually, I have apologised to my victim and she has forgiven me. Thank you for helping me indirectly understand what my actions can do to another. I promise I will never cyber bully again! God bless. From: Bad Person

to look into the eyes of your victims and see the pain you caused, you could stand back and not take responsibility for your cruel actions. But on reading your victim’s account and my response, you took responsibility for your actions. I salute you for your honesty and your decision to stop bullying online. I hope you will be there for other victims when you discover anyone being bullied online. You are essentially a good person.

I am very proud of you, my dear. To approach your victim and apologise is a very humble and noble thing to do. You have shown you can be a better person and I am sure in future, you will look upon everyone in a kindly way. It is time to stop referring to yourself as a “bad person” and to forgive yourself. God bless you too.
