K-Drama Fever
Descendants of the Sun might’ve torn up the ratings, but these new blockbusters are poised to take its spot as the next Hallyu torchbearer. Here are our picks for the biggest dramas this season. By Chew Hui Ling
We hardly get a drama focused on a heroine in K-dramas, so don’t blame us for harbouring the biggest girl crush on Park Shin Hye. Here, she takes on the headstrong character of Yoo Hye Jung, a badass doctor who can tackle a mob of gangsters effortlessly, but ironically struggles with childhood scars, old rivalries and work politics. As much as she denies the need for a knight in shining armour, we can’t help but flutter at the adorable exchanges between Hye Jung and her former mentor Hong Ji Hong (Kim Rae Won). This pair is definitely a match made in K-drama heaven! Available on Viu
Uncontrollably Fond Starring: Kim Woo Bin , Bae Suzy Hype factor:
It only took us 45 seconds to get us completely hooked: gorgeous cinematography, eye candy leads and superb chemistry that would even make their real-life beaus Lee Min Ho and Shin Min Ah jealous. After a terrible twist of fate separated the high school pals, snobbish rock star Shin Joon Young (Kim Woo Bin) and greedy documentary producer No Eul (Suzy) meet again a decade later – thus beginning their
heartbreaking, cliche-driven romance as the guy sets out to win her back again. The jury’s still out on this one, but if you’re a fan of watching starcrossed lovers in tragic melodramas, Uncontrollably Fond will be right up your alley. Don’t say we didn’t warn you: you’re gonna need lots of tissues. Available on Viu Spot Kim Woo Bin’s former Twenty co-stars, Jun Ho (2PM) and Lee Yoo Bi, making a cameo in episode four!

Doctors Starring: Park Shin Hye, Kim Rae Won Hype factor:
Dubbed the ‘action queen’ on set, Park Shin Hye performs all the action scenes in the drama without a stunt double. Props to her!

Legend of the Blue Sea Starring: Jun Ji Hyun , Lee Min Ho Hype factor:
Scar let Heart Starring: Lee Jun Ki, IU, Baekhyun (EXO), Kang Ha Neul, Nam Joo Hyuk, Ji Soo and more Hype factor:
The remake of Chinese novel Startling By Each Step has been on the lips of everyone thanks to its cast of fatally attractive actors, including Lee Jun Ki, Baekhyun, etc. The imperial princes fight for reign in power, all while vying for the heart of a time-travelling 21st century lady (IU). It’s blood, war, historic getups and everything a period drama will ever need, but will it do the original series justice? We’ll have to wait to find out! Available every Monday and Tuesday at 9pm on ONE
These two names alone are enough to dub this upcoming drama the next big hit. From the same writer of My Love From The Stars, Legend of the Blue Sea boasts incredible star power with Jun Ji Hyun and Lee Min Ho taking the lead. Not much is revealed about the plot yet, but sources state that it’s an adaptation loosely inspired by The Little Mermaid. Logic tells us that the girl will play the mermaid, but hey, wouldn’t it be interesting to see a merman instead? To be aired in November The drama is only airing in November, but Chinese broadcasters are already offering as high as $600,000 for the licensing rights!
Drama-ception! Did you know these actors were once co-stars?

While others took up horse-riding and action lessons, “Jun Ki hyung doesn’t need to because he already mastered everything”. As expected of the veteran actor!

Dream High Suzy, IU
The Heirs Lee Min Ho, Park Shin Hye, Kim Woo Bin
W Starring: Lee Jong Suk, Han Hyo Joo Hype factor:
If you thought Uncontrollably Fond was insane, you’re in for a real rollercoaster ride. Romance, suspense and fantasy rolled into one, W revolves around Oh Yeon Joo (Han Hyo Joo), the daughter of a webtoon creator in the real world, and Kang Chul (Lee Jong Suk), a chaebol who exists in the webtoon itself. The two universes collide when Yeon Joo gets sucked into the comic dimension –
and it’s now up to her to stop the mysterious murder attempts on Kang Chul. But behold the twist: the mastermind behind the evil schemes is none other than the webtoon creator himself. Mind-blown yet? Prep yourself; this is just the beginning. Available on Viu Lee Jong Suk confesses that he filmed “the most kiss scenes in this drama out of everything I’ve done”. Looks like we can expect lots of steamy action!

The Race Is On
from Halsey to Imagine Dragons, this year’s Singapore Formula 1 (F1) Grand Prix revs up for the biggest show yet with a smorgasbord of international headliners. By Chew Hui Ling
You’ve probably heard of Halsey, the rainbow-haired indie chanteuse who scored a Billboard-approved debut record by now. But despite being all Listen to: over the airwaves these days, the #1 ‘Colors’ 22-year-old is not your average top #2 ‘Ghost ’ 40s singer – she’s been described #3 ‘Castle’ as having the best musical vibes of Lorde, Lana Del Rey, Lauren Mayberry, and even Miley Cyrus, all packaged into one killer persona. Plus, it’s not that often you find a rising star with such a riveting presence. And you’re about to witness it in its full Badlands glory.
Queen + Adam Lambert
Any aspiring singer would’ve dreamt of playing with their favourite act one day, and that became reality for Adam Lambert Listen to: #1 ‘Bohemian Rhapsody’ who made it into American Idol #2 ‘Don’t Stop Me Now’ with ‘Bohemian Rhapsody’ as #3 ‘We Will Rock You’ his audition song. Two years later, the pop prince officially started collaborating with the group as the new frontman, marking a new era for the legendary rock band. For the millennials who’ve never heard of Queen, hit up any of their performances on YouTube and revel in the scale of an entire stadium howling along to cult anthems like ‘We Will Rock You’ and ‘We Are The Champions’. You’re welcome.

Imagine Dragons
18 Sep Padang Stage Listen to: #1 ‘Demons’ #2 ‘I Bet My Life’ #3 ‘Roots’
It feels like yesterday that Imagine Dragons was tearing up the behemoth Singapore Indoor Stadium – a year later, their Smoke + Mirrors concert stands strong as one of the best gigs we’ve ever been to. These multi-platinum rockers are amazing on record, but they pack twice the bite when paired with their bombastic stadium appeal. And if their show here is any indication, expect a whiplash set of high-energy showmanship and fist-pumping choruses come race day. They haven’t been churning out new tunes since the last album (not that we mind), but you can still look forward to live performances of their new movie soundtracks, ‘Not Today’ from Me Before You and ‘Sucker For Pain’ from Suicide Squad.
Bad Blood, Bastille’s set to show the world what they’re truly capable of with Wild World, which will encompass “much darker R&B and much heavier guitar stuff”. It’s a far cry from the Bastille sound we’re used to, but considering their knack at experimenting with genres, we’re sure they’ll perform wonders yet again. And with F1 happening in the same month, you don’t have to wait long to hear their new material live!

The only thing better than discovering your new jam? Finding out that Pentatonix (PTX) made a cover of it – from the famous Daft Punk medley to Taylor Swift’s 1989 album. But covers aren’t all they’re good at; PTX’s originals are just as mind-blowing. If you haven’t checked out their self-titled album, it’s their first release with original tracks such as ‘Can’t Sleep Love’ and ‘Sing’. Look ‘em up – your ears will thank you.

Our Chemical Hearts by Krystal Sutherland
The Square Root of Summer by Harriet Reuter Hapgood
Highly Illogical Behaviour by John Corey Whaley
With a film adaption already in the bag, Krystal Sutherland’s debut novel has received rave reviews and comparisons to YA king John Green’s work (the next TFIOS, anyone?). This is a love story with an unconventional lead: Grace Town, a girl with questionable hygiene who hobbles around school with a cane. And yet, it’s a sense of brokenness within Grace that draws hopeless romantic Henry Page to her, leaving readers to wonder if he’ll eventually be the one to piece her back together again.

sep
Gone are the days of Arthur Bishop’s (Jason Statham) contract killing, or so he assumed. When his arch-enemy holds the love of his life, Gina (Jessica Alba), hostage, he must go around the world to carry out three assassinations and make them all appear like accidents. Forced to return to his violent ways, Arthur must overcome all odds to murder the most dangerous men in the world.
When the book mentions how Gottie’s “past, present and future are about to collide” this summer, it literally refers to wormholes and rips in space-time continuum that turn her into an unwitting time-traveller. But Gottie’s no ordinary teen, having personally experienced a heavy measure of tragedy in losing loved ones. As she begins sinking deeper into her grief, she finds herself sent back in time – revisiting all the good and bad memories of loves past and present, and as a result, slowly piecing together the puzzle that is her life.
The illogical behaviour referenced in the title is agoraphobia: a fear of open or public spaces. Sixteen-year-old Solomon’s case is so severe, he hasn’t left his home in three whole years. That all changes when Lisa, the driven and aspiring psychology major, comes into his life. In order to get into the programme of her dreams, Lisa needs to pen an essay demonstrating her experience with mental illness. So she seeks Solomon out, and together with her boyfriend Clark, they try to “fix” him, forming an unlikely clique in this heartfelt novel about the power of friendship.
Florence Foster Jenkins

New York heiress Florence Foster Jenkins has big dreams of being an opera singer, and to perform in front of thousands in Carnegie Hall. There’s just one problem: she has a terrible singing voice. Based on a true story, this funny and heartwarming movie follows Florence (Meryl Streep), assisted by her husband who simply can’t bear to tell her the truth (Hugh Grant), and her pianist (Simon Helberg) who practises with her to achieve her near-impossible dream.

We are familiar with the pains of being a student tied to a shoestring budget. Here are some effective ways to earn more pocket allowance in your spare time.
94
Part Time arding Job s Rew It’s not uncommon for students to take up part-time jobs after school or on the weekends. If you’re able to excel in your studies while juggling work on the side, we’d suggest you try your hand at these well-paying temp gigs to make it worth your while.
Other ways to stretch your budget
Sell your stuff Private Tutor < $20 per hour Giving private tuition is highly lucrative – the market averages $50 per hour for university-grade subjects! Plus, most classes would probably be arranged after-hours, so there’s little chance of work clashing with school.
Don’t leave unused items collecting dust, sell ’em online instead! But be warned: don’t expect quick cash unless you’re putting up a rare collectible. We’d suggest this as a longterm venture instead.
Roadshow Promoter < $12 per hour
Use your student status Shops, restaurants, and other retailers often have student promotions, ranging from discounts to special meal combos. Make full use of it to enjoy deals and discounts all over the island!
Start a business If you make a mean cup of coffee, why not consider being a barista at a cafe? Granted, you might require latte-art making skills to snag yourself the job, but investing in a few coffee-making workshops might pay off in the long run.
Line Stander > $20 per hour We aren’t kidding. Whether it’s the upcoming iPhone 7 launch or the release of H&M’s latest designer collection, you can get paid to queue up on someone else’s behalf.
Pet sitting services range from walking dogs, paying house visits, or even hosting a pet sleepover, perfect for animal lovers. Flexibility aside, wouldn’t it be great to earn moolah while hanging out with new furry friends?
Focus Group Participant > $200 per survey It might not be a source for stable income, but participating in focus groups can be quite profitable. Incentives vary anywhere from a $10 voucher to $200 in cash, depending on the subject or survey duration.
Being a roadshow promoter can be well-paying if you’re willing to work long hours, Depending on the job scope, you might even be paid commission for every sale made! Can anyone say “ka-ching”?
Barista < $10 per hour
Unable to commit to longer-term jobs? Consider trying your hand at these (kinda) odd jobs. It’s a flexible alternative as you can adjust your working hours to suit your schedule, but it might not pay as much as a stable part-time job would.
Pet Sitter > $25 per hour
Mascot < $25 per hour If you’re nimble on your feet and don’t mind wearing a stuffy suit, try being a mascot! Despite it being physically taxing, you wouldn’t be required to don the suit for more than half an hour between breaks, which technically makes it ‘easier money’.
Odd Jobs Alert!
This is the ultimate moneymaking gig! Be creative – buy extra souvenirs when overseas, source for suppliers online, or even sell your DIYs. Start on a pre-order basis before fully taking the plunge. It’s risky, but the payoff will be worth it.
95
Mystery Shopper > $100 per hour The job’s simple: help companies evaluate service quality, staff performance and overall experience while disguised as a customer. Payouts start from $10 an hour to as high as $120 per job, so do shop (no pun intended) around for a better paying assignment.
DearKelly Dear readers,
paedophilia. A paedophile is a person who is sexually attracted to children. Today, I focus on
It calls for honesty, vigilance, knowing and admitting that paedophiles lurk on the Internet and in our midst. Adults must be at the forefront of this crusade to protect children from child predators of both sexes. It is not a time for political correctness; it is a time for us to watch out for the young and vulnerable. It is not the time for anyone to say that children should not be exposed to this kind of information.
I stress: the victims are kids. They must be taught, by responsible adults, how to look out for danger signals and protect themselves. “Knowledge is Power”. Even if parents block sites, savvy kids know what to do to get their way. The Internet allows kids to access even the most horrendous of information and meet perverts that groom children.
Grooming means preparing
a child with the intention of committing a sexual offence. This takes cunning, patience and an ability to win trust. Once paedophiles groom kids, thus winning their trust, they abuse them.
The danger of paedophilia is that victims seldom come forward. Even if they do, there are varying responses to the crime, as you will see in the letters below. Then there are the paedophiles that lurk amongst us. They adopt a kind demeanour to gain the trust of victims, parents and caregivers. Because they are masters at deception, they often succeed in their devilish missions.
Alert: Paedophiles could hold respectable and responsible positions in society.
Parents, educators, and even elder siblings should keep a diligent watch over the young and vulnerable – babies to those in their mid-teens are vulnerable. Last month, a 50-year-old confessed
to me that she was a victim of a paedophile and she is still under psychiatric care. She said the movie Spotlight, which deals with paedophilia, brought back unpleasant memories. She stressed, “You never forget. It lurks in the subconscious – movies, someone in the crowd resembling the molester, books, even a voice… can trigger past horrors.” Let’s turn to a recent case of a horrendous child molester in Malaysia.
Paedophile abused up to 200 Malaysian kids I closely followed media information on British paedophile, Richard Huckle, 30, who abused young kids, even sixmonth old babies in poor communities in Kuala Lumpur where he posed as an English teacher.
No! He was not exposed by victims or their irate parents! He would have gotten away had he not boasted, on a paedophile site, about his activities. To make matters worse, he posted videos and over 20,000 images of himself abusing his victims. And it gets worse. He wrote a manual entitled: Paedophiles and Poverty: Child Lover Guide which he intended to publish online. He focused on giving tips to paedophiles on how to avoid getting caught. Huckle’s crimes were so hideous that it was reported British prosecutors planned three trials (at time of writing), as they feared one jury could not cope with viewing the horrendous photos and videos of Huckle sexually abusing kids. Huckle obviously won the trust of parents. My question – how did he get access to babies? Why would babies need an

English language teacher? This is what a National Crime Agency investigator said about Huckles, “He was one of the most
committed, manipulative, conniving paedophiles”. He obviously patiently groomed his victims. But where were the parents? Were none of them following up on what he was teaching? Did no parent see any signs of sexual abuse on their child/children? Did nobody ask their children what they learnt from this man and ask to see the written work? Did no child appear distressed or uncomfortable? Maybe the answer lies with Huckle boasting he targeted children from poor communities, adding that they were “easier to seduce than middle-class western kids”. Huckle succeeded because parents and adults in the community did not warn children about paedophiles. I continually warn readers never to let anyone touch them, never agree to meet an adult in a secluded spot, never to go to the home of an adult you meet online or in person, never let, even a relative, touch you in a private place. Naturally, you have to explain what constitutes ‘a private place’, otherwise how would children protect themselves? I have met and received letters from the victims of paedophiles of both sexes, so I am very concerned about protecting potential victims. I have to carefully edit the letters because the contents can be very graphic and disturbing. Victims are
afraid, ashamed and wonder if they are, in some way, responsible for what happened. Readers, hand this column to your parents, relatives and friends. Teenage, together with the community, must take a united stand against paedophiles.
I repeat: Some are in responsible positions. Vigilance at all times is called for. Always here for you,

Molested by dad’s friend How are you Kelly? I hope you are well. It took a long time for me to write to you. I have read your column for many years. I am one of your faithful readers. I am in secondary 4. I have also been reading the newspapers and realise what happened to me has happened to others. This gives me courage to write to you. But my story is a bit different. [From: Upset]
Kelly: Welcome to the Teenage family, “faithful reader”. I am so glad you had the “courage” to write to me. No child should be treated as you have been. Sadly, I know of other parents who acted the way your parents did. It troubles me greatly. Why a parent would choose a molester over their child shocks me and makes me very angry. We will save this subject for another time. Today, we focus on helping you deal with your situation, my dear.
Q
When I was nine years old, I was left at home with my dad’s best friend when my family went to a funeral. I call him “uncle”. Uncle invited me to watch a movie. He patted the couch seat next to him and said with a smile, “Come sit”. I happily plonked myself down and smiled at him. When he put his arm around me, I snuggled up to him as I do with mum and dad. A little later, he put his hand on my knee. I just sat there watching the movie. Now, I think because I didn’t say or do anything, he
moved his hand up my thigh. I was

wearing shorts. I had no experience so I didn’t jump up or tell him to stop. I sat quietly watching the movie. Only when he shoved his hairy hand under my T-shirt, did I jump up in fright. He laughed and said, “Hey, come here pretty girl. I love you a lot. I won’t hurt you”. I sat down again a bit further away from him.
He moved near me and hugged me, and gave me ten dollars “to buy sweets”. We watched TV once more.
Suddenly, he grabbed me, kissed me and shoved his hairy hand into the top of my shorts. Kelly: You poor child. You were much too young to understand that you were being molested. Shame on this man! How could he betray your parents’ trust?
It is an offence to molest a child. Shame on him trying to bribe you with money; this is one of the tactics of paedophiles.
Q
I ran to my room and locked the door. He banged on the door and begged me to come out. I cried and shouted “No! Go away”. I was afraid but my mobile was in the hall so I couldn’t call my parents. When they returned, he left. My parents asked me to come for dinner. I said, “I

Instead, use your good judgment to make sense of the situation and go steadily from there.
It’s time to do some spring cleaning in your life! Start by getting rid of any emotional baggage you might be carrying, and declutter your mind from negativity. The same goes for physical objects as well, so clear up your space and discard the unnecessary. Make way for the new and exciting opportunities that are on their way.
