For more than 40 years, MarineQuest has been the official marine science outreach program for the University of North Carolina Wilmington, providing young people with opportunities to explore, discover and value our marine habitats. Whether you experience MarineQuest through dive explorations, studying marine life, or venturing out on research vessels, your time here will contribute to making waves in environmental science.
At MarineQuest, you’ll experience applied marine biology, chemistry, geology, physics, engineering and biotechnology while conducting field-based scientific investigations at the marsh, beach, fouling docks, and on a research vessel.
Start developing the skills and tools you will need to become a modern marine scientist with MarineQuest. Participate in laboratory and field-based research while enjoying various water sports to enhance your learning, activities may include fishing, kayaking, snorkeling, boogie boarding, and scuba diving. To ensure a quality experience, we have created a variety of different summer and school-year programs that are suited for appropriate ages, academic standing, and maturity levels.
Senior Dive Programs:
MarineQuest’s Senior Dive Programs are some of our most popular offerings for the next generation of marine scientists. They include the following:
Oceans-17:
• Capstone program designed to help students get a leg up in the college admissions process
• Hands-on research experience with UNCW faculty and staff
• Work toward PADI Advanced Open Water Scuba certification and gain skills of a scientific diver.
Scientific Diver:
• Preps students with alreadyexisting Open Water Dive certifications for underwater research
• Work toward two PADI specialties: Aware Fish ID and Peak Performance Buoyancy Curriculum focus on ichthyology
Dive Hawks:
• Beginner scuba course
• Work toward PADI Open Water Scuba certification
• Explore a variety of careers that require underwater skills
