How an Independent Educational Consultant Can Assist Families by Teri Solochek, Ph.D., CEP, IECA Member (California)
here are many children and adolescents with learning differences. They may be depressed, anxious, coping with substance use, or simply acting out from not having their everyday needs met. Often, they retreat and isolate themselves from the outside world. You as a parent should know that there are a significant number of resources and accommodations to help your teen. Public schools are effective in teaching the majority of children and adolescents, but are sometimes inadequate at serving children who have special learning, emotional, or behavioral needs. For these students, a mainstream setting may not work, and a non-public school placement or specialized program may be the best solution. If that is the case, a referral to an independent educational consultant (IEC) should be considered. Clergy, mental health professionals, and school counselors can provide a certain level of professional support. However, if consideration is being given to placement in a private day school, boarding school, or therapeutic program, the services of an IEC can be invaluable. IECs are trained professionals in school and specialized placement. Their professional expertise helps match the needs of children and adolescents with learning differences to the appropriate schools or treatment programs. Independent educational consultants have a variety of backgrounds including school or guidance counseling, teaching, school administration, and/or psychology. They are well versed in determining the needs of LD children, as well as how to work best in conjunction with schools, other professionals, and a teen's family; they serve as a family's “case manager” to ensure the best possible solution. Most importantly, they are extremely knowledgeable about the various placement options around the country and abroad—and can provide an unbiased assessment of the appropriate setting. How do they gain their knowledge? IECs spend much of their time on the road, visiting private

schools, boarding schools, therapeutic or emotional growth schools, residential treatment centers, wilderness programs, and colleges nationwide. They not only visit a variety of programs, but they visit often to stay abreast of program and staff changes. The goal of an IEC is to become a part of the team to coordinate the efforts of all involved—working with the child’s therapist, clergy, and current school in presenting placement alternatives to the family and aiding them in making the best decision. IECs coordinate the exchange of information between school, family, and other professionals and the recommended schools or treatment centers; aid the family in making their final decision; and facilitate enrollment.

How does a family start working with an IEC? The family, and if possible, the child, meet with the IEC for an initial visit. At this time a detailed history is obtained and releases are signed to enable the consultant to obtain information from the school, such as test results and any other information the consultant deems pertinent. If additional testing is recommended, this may be conducted by the consultant or referred to an outside professional, depending on the background of the consultant and the scope of the practice. Once the consultant has reviewed the case, he or she presents placement options to the family.

The Top Things Parents of a Student with LD Should Know by Pamela Tedeschi, IECA Member (Maryland) Being diagnosed with a learning disability is a lifelong, 24/7 challenge. Nevertheless, with the appropriate education, encouragement, love, and sheer determination, children with learning disabilities are able to compensate for their LD and succeed in life. Learning disabilities don’t affect any two children the same way.
When touring a campus, it is important to visit the Learning Center (for schools) and Office of Disability (for colleges) to get a sense of the director, personnel, and services available.
Students with learning disabilities often have comorbid psychological issues (i.e., depression, anxiety, mood disorders).
At the start of each school year, older high school and college students need to make sure that their accommodations are in place at the beginning of classes. Parents of younger students should work with their child’s teachers to ensure he or she receives the proper accommodations.
A thorough review of a child's records is necessary to diagnose a student’s particular learning difference. If records are not current or seem incomplete, consider a thorough evaluation from a neuropsychologist or a school psychologist who can provide a psycho-educational assessment. Very bright students with learning disabilities are often able to hide their LD, especially in elementary school. This is particularly true for students with strong verbal skills. Older teens need to become aware of their learning styles, strengths, and needs, and be willing to advocate and seek support for themselves. Independent educational consultants, teachers, parents, or disability office or learning center personnel find it difficult to help if the student is resistant.
Keep updated information in your files, including the documentation requirements for learning disabilities at schools and colleges. Gain familiarity with all of the new technology (Universal Design for Learning) that is available to make learning new concepts accessible to all students. Universal Design for Learning is a process of making course concepts accessible and skills attainable regardless of learning style, physical or sensory abilities (www.udlcenter.org).
Listen to your child to determine what strategies were effective and ineffective in previous learning environments. Parents should realize that their child’s Individual Education Program (IEP) does not carry over from high school to college.

Program Descriptions for Teens with Emotional or Behavioral Disorders Boarding Schools
Emotional Growth, Therapeutic These schools generally provide an integrated educational milieu with an appropriate level of structure and supervision for physical, emotional, behavioral, familial, social, intellectual and academic development. They grant high school diplomas or award credits that lead to admission to a diploma granting secondary school. Each school will vary in its approach to the emotional and behavioral needs of the child and we urge parents to review this approach with the professional that has been working with their child to ensure appropriate placement. Placement at these boarding schools can range from 12 months to two years depending on the program’s therapeutic components.
Outdoor Behavioral Health
Wilderness Programs and Outdoor Therapeutic Programs
Most outdoor behavioral health programs subscribe to a variety of treatment models that incorporate a blend of therapeutic modalities, but do so in the context of wilderness environments and back country travel. The approach has evolved to include client assessment, development of an individual treatment plan, the use of established psychotherapeutic practice, and the development of aftercare plans. Outdoor behavioral health programs apply wilderness therapy in the field, which contains the following key elements that distinguish it from other approaches found to be effective in working with adolescents: 1) the promotion of self-efficacy and personal autonomy through task accomplishment, 2) a restructuring of the therapist-client relationship through group and communal living facilitated by natural consequences, and 3) the promotion of a therapeutic social group that is inherent in outdoor living arrangements.
Residential Treatment Centers The focus of these programs is behavioral support. Medication management and medical monitoring is generally available on-site. These facilities treat adolescents with serious psychological and behavior issues. Most are Joint Commission (JCAHO) accredited. These facilities provide group and individual therapy sessions. They are highly structured and offer recreational activities and academics. Specialty residential treatment centers will include psychiatric and behavioral hospitals as well as eating disorder treatment centers.
Small Residential Programs Small residential programs are designed to serve fewer than 30 students in nurturing, often family-like settings. Small residential programs offer a holistic therapeutic milieu, which is based upon the relationships formed and the social dynamics created in small, intimate environments. They offer appropriate levels of structure and supervision for the emotional, social, and academic development of their students. These programs often incorporate life skills training, academic instruction, outdoor adventure, recreation, and family involvement into an experiential living environment. Small residential programs often maintain an area of specialty for the students they serve.
Transitional Independent Living/ Young Adult Programs These programs are designed for young people over 18 needing a safe, supportive environment and life skills training as they transition into adulthood. Many offer access to 12-step programs and may have a psychiatric component. Generally they will offer educational programs that are linked to community colleges or universities, or provide schooling at their location. Volunteering, employment arrangements, community service, and re-integration into the community at large are general components of the programs. Many operate on a small residential model and transition to a community based, independent living apartment model.

Families are also served who require transitional or reunification services to safely reunite them with their children following an out-of-home placement. The Therapeutic Boarding School A complete high school education and the support needed to keep a teenager on track

A therapeutic boarding school is a unique setting for students who are unable to succeed in a traditional high school setting. It offers intensive intervention for teenagers who may struggle emotionally or academically. Teenagers today can easily become lost or sad if they are not accepted into a peer group in high school. Some teenagers may be extremely bright but have difficulty handling their feelings and negotiating their behaviors, while others may have a specific learning disability that prevents them from keeping up with others academically. Whatever the case, being out of the mainstream can make a teenager show negative behavior such as acting out or changing his or her physical appearance to draw negative attention.

While emphasizing the importance of achieving academically, a therapeutic boarding school also offers support through clinical, nursing and psychiatric departments.
What Does a Therapeutic Boarding School Do? A therapeutic boarding school looks at the areas of competency and strength that each student possesses and then develops a plan to build resiliency and achieve academic goals. It offers a traditional college preparatory high school core curriculum with the flexibility to design individualized programs to ensure each student receives the courses needed to graduate with a high school diploma. What Support Services Does a Student Receive? When a student enters a therapeutic boarding school, an individualized educational plan is developed or revised. The plan addresses academic goals as well as social, emotional, and behavioral goals. When a student enters a therapeutic boarding school, he or she is assigned a clinician who meets with the student weekly and communicates with the parents regularly. If a student has a specific diagnosis or takes medication, the school psychiatrist will perform an assessment and monitor the student’s medication throughout his or her stay. All staff members are trained in a therapeutic management system, which includes crisis prevention to keep a student safe if he or she becomes overwhelmed.
How Does a Student Move On? The therapeutic boarding school not only focuses on college or career preparation, but also focuses on preparation for successful adult living through understanding each individual’s unique challenges and needs, and how to advocate for help that may be needed. The dormitory experience provides guidance in developing self-discipline and contributing to a positive community environment. Students participate in daily scheduled extracurricular and recreational activities both on and off campus. Field trips and excursions allow the students to explore arts, culture and the environment. Team meetings are scheduled periodically to review the progress a student has made toward achieving individual goals. When the therapeutic staff, the family and other involved professionals determine a student is ready to move on, a transition plan is developed. The plan addresses all aspects of the student’s future plans including college placement assistance.

What Makes a Therapeutic School Special? The therapeutic school provides a unique setting for students who have failed in the traditional school setting. Often such students end up in an inpatient hospital, detention center or on probation. Due to dramatic changes in insurance coverage, hospitals only provide short-term care, which leaves the family to try to handle any behavioral problems themselves. Parents often feel overwhelmed and the family system begins to fall apart. That is the critical time for intervention and consideration of a therapeutic boarding school, which can provide a complete high school education and the support needed to keep a teenager on track to a successful future.
