With Luc Bouliane Architect Inc.

This major renovation project involved the dramatic transformation of a former munitions factory into the new home to the Cossette Media family of agencies. The large-bay structure of the existing building – which had been broken into a dark warren of small rooms by a previous tenant – was recovered during the project, creating a bright and vibrant atmosphere that is reflective of the values of the client as well as a unique address for each of the different agencies operated by Cossette. The design brings the agencies together along an active interior street in which interaction occurs and which provides access to numerous shared services – from collaboration areas, cafe space and meeting rooms, to management, editing and production facilities. This strategy creates a lively central spine, which brings each facet of the agency together, while offering the autonomy and security required by each unit. By restoring the original large-bay structure of the building and the use of floating mezzanine meeting pods, the beauty of the original industrial space is restored, while also introducing an abundance of daylight into all work spaces, regardless of their location within the building.

Dramatically transforming a former munitions factory interior into the vibrant, inspiring and functional new home of a major advertising agency was the primary goal of this project.

The material choices create visual and acoustic separation between the various departments and prevent a sense of uniformity so as to maintain the identity of each office in a non-hierarchical, community-building way.

The large-bay structure of the existing building, which had been broken into a dark warren of small rooms by a previous tenant, was recovered during the project, creating a bright and animated atmosphere that reflects the values of the client as well as provides a unique address for each of the different sub-agencies operated by the company.

The design brings the departments together along an active interior “street, which facilitates interaction and provides access to numerous shared services, including casual socializing spaces, cafes and meeting rooms, as well as management, editing and production facilities.

By restoring the original large-bay structure of the building and the strategic introduction of floating mezzanine meeting pods, the beauty of the original industrial space was restored, while also introducing an abundance of daylight into all work spaces, regardless of their location within the building.

This lively central spine, which brings each facet of the agency together, offers the autonomy and security required by each unit, while fostering a sense of community and shared interests. Encountering the vibrant movement along this axis energizes the entire building, giving it a dynamism that uplifts the spirit.

Adaptively re-using the building was the best and most sustainable solution to the client’s environmental concerns and spatial needs. In fact, the restoration of the original interior proportions and incorporation of natural light brings the space back to its 1910s architectural glory, replacing First World War weaponry with sculptural forms, bold-coloured spaces, and the activity of creation.

The creative, independent-thinking users now find inspiration in the spacious, naturally-ventilated, well-lit space that, in its very essence, encourages productivity and exploration.
