Sherbourne Common Pavilion

This new pavilion provides services for Sherbourne Common Park – a key phase in the city’s ongoing waterfront revitalization plan. Working with landscape architects, artists and the civil engineers responsible for storm water purification for the entire waterfront, the pavilion was conceived in relation to an overall vision for the park that focused on public interaction and connection to water, specifically to Lake Ontario and its history.

The park itself is conceived as a memory of the waterfront’s long history. It is an abstraction of the condition of a pure stream, running through the landscape, into the lake. The “stream” is in fact a channel of storm water that is purified by the park infrastructure, which includes both UV filtration equipment housed in the pavilion and natural biofiltration. The pavilion forms a key node that interconnects the various elements of the park. The pavilion also houses washroom and changing facilities for the accompanying rink/water feature as well as a concession for food and beverages. It also accommodates the rink chiller equipment, fuel storage for the Zamboni, as well as UV filtration equipment for the waterfront as a whole. It is designed as a year-round facility to help service and activate the park at all times. The arch itself forms a covered seating area overlooking the rink/water feature.

After the storm, runoff is collected in East Bayfront’s Stormwater Management Facility located in tanks under the water’s edge boardwalk. These tanks have three key roles: collecting storm water, reinforcing the existing dock wall, and creating a platform for the public promenade.

After water is collected in the tanks, it is transferred to a large tank under the Parliament WaveDeck. The water is conveyed to the Sherbourne Common UV Purification Facility housed beneath the park’s Pavilion to treat the water with strong UV light.

travels through one of three dramatic channelled sculptures and a bio-filtration bed. The clean water is then discharged into Lake Ontario.
