The design of the John M. Harper Branch Library posed an exciting challenge in that the library shares its home with a new community YMCA. The desire was to embrace the confluence of these programmatically and technically different uses and create a functional and inspiring whole in which the programs interact and elevate each other to create an inspiring community experience.

The building, now certified LEED Silver, aimed to be as ecologically responsible as it is socially exciting. Extensive daylighting reduces energy consumption and creates a bright and interconnected space. In addition, the project employs displacement ventilation, green and white roofs, local, recycled and low-VOC materials, and on-site storm water management.

A key design feature is a light-filled galleria, which serves as a unifying spine through the building, while mediating between the different acoustic, humidity and security requirements of the two programs
