The Great Egg Hunt and Championship Chick Race on Saturday, March 30 Get ready for family fun in the park.

Tehachapi Valley Recreation Parks District is hosting The Great Egg Hunt and Chick Race Championship on Saturday, March 30, starting at 9 a.m. at West Park in downtown Tehachapi.

“The Easter egg hunt has become more and more popular over the years,” said Sandy Chavez, Tehachapi Parks & Rec recreation coordinator. “We hide more than 2,000 eggs all over West Park and it’s organized chaos when we begin each hunt.” Several hundred children participated in last year’s event, said Chavez. “It’s a blast to see kids scurrying in every direction all over the lawns at West Park. It’s one of my favorite TVRPD events.”

Chavez notes that children need to bring their own basket to gather eggs.

Shasta Villalvazo’s son Ezekiel was two years old last year when he participated in the event for the first time. “He’s already excited to do it again this year,” says Villalvazo. Ezekiel found a golden ticket in one of his eggs that he was able to redeem for a gift basket. “It’s definitely a great family event,” said

Villalvazo. “Everyone is very nice and it’s a positive atmosphere. It represents Tehachapi well.”

Mary Moreno, a teacher with Farmworker’s Institute of Education and Leadership Development (F.I.E.L.D.), a charter program for 18 to 25 years olds to get their high school diploma, is bringing several F.I.E.L.D. students to assist at the event. Bryce Leishman will serve as the event MC and Brianne Hafer will help little ones collect their eggs.

Moreno herself has been collecting donations for the event.

Farmer John Eggs in Bakersfield has donated 50 chicks for the Chick Race Championships, which opens at 9 a.m.; the race starts at 10 a.m.

Chicks can be purchased onsite for $20 to race side-by-side down an eight-foot track for the bragging rights of “The Fastest Chick in Tehachapi” and the winner’s purse.

Lots of other activities are being offered: Children will be able decorate a picture frame with Kathy Hinkle from Picture Perfect. Albertson’s has donated two basketball hoops that lucky winners from a hoops contest will take home

Downtown Tehachapi will celebrate the arrival of spring on Friday, April 5, with the monthly First Friday Art Walk from 5 to 8 p.m.

Participants will include Gallery ‘n’ Gifts, Tehachapi Treasure Trove, the Tehachapi Museum and the Tehachapi Community Church — other shops and venues may also be open.

The Tehachapi Treasure Trove, 116 E. Tehachapi Blvd., presents another First Friday Fun Fest. There will be fun, food, beverage, along with demonstra-

tions by artists Eugen Kunstmann and Chelsea Schmidt.

Kunstmann is a blacksmith who specializes in recreating found objects.

He is known for making coat hooks and other objects from railroad spikes. He will be at the Treasure Trove with his portable forge and will do a live presentation of the process he uses for his creations.

Schmidt is a remarkable artist who specializes in painting flowers and rocks but also does a number of other fun southwest and animal images. A developmen-

tally delayed individual, Chelsea has found her vocation with her painting. Her work is fun and whimsical. Chelsea grows in skill and diversity with each new project.

The Tehachapi Museum has three special displays ready for First Friday. One showcase features part of the collection of Dr. Terry Brady’s wooden boxes created by artists in his native Australia, from New Zealand and many from the US and Canada.

Some are carved, others machined and turned.

A new display in the family case will focus on

the Beauford family, one of Tehachapi’s early families. Harry Beauford was a barber as early as 1909, a member of the orchestra and a Grand Master of the Masonic Lodge in 1916.

His son Harry, Jr. was a pilot and the projectionist at the Beekay Theatre. Harry, Jr. is featured in a mural at the Hitching Post Theater that shows him preparing for takeoff for the first Air Mail sent from Tehachapi in 1938.

In the Community Case will be a display of toys from days gone by.

Dana Hubbard brings another shade of blues to Fiddlers Crossing

The Blues comes in numerous shades, and Fiddlers Crossing is presenting many of them this year. Dana Hubbard occupies one shade all by himself. He will be in concert at Fiddlers Crossing April 6, at 7 p.m. This will be his first appearance in Tehachapi.

Hubbard is a master of the blues guitar. Using a slide on his little finger, he gets more sounds out of one guitar and two hands than seems humanly possible. Hubbard has won award after award in the blues genre. He has performed with or opened with some of the greats of blues, jazz and folk, including, Sam Bush, David Wilcox, Greg Allman, Etta James, David Lindley and Little Feat.

Hubbard is a native Californian, born and raised on the Central Coast. He attended UC Santa Cruz only long enough to finish an elective course on country blues. Then, he hit the road and never looked back. He started the way many acoustic musicians start, by busking on the streets, in his case Berkeley and San Francisco.

Dana Hubbard er his own band, The Delta Twisters, playing blues clubs for more than a decade. He moved on to an electric guitar for a while, playing bigger venues and theaters.

He returned to the acoustic guitar with his second album and is a virtual one-man band on the instrument. Hubbard’s guitar playing has been called “amazing to watch and a joy to listen to.” You hear the bass and the back beat rhythm along with the melody and chords, and look around in vain for his backup guitar player. He does all this while singing his own

songs, often addressing social or environmental issues with a twinkle in his eye and a blues man’s grin.

Fiddlers Crossing is at 206 East F Street at Robinson Street, in Downtown Tehachapi. Remote link between heartburn and cancer

DEAR DR. DONOHUE: I have had heartburn for many years. I take Prilosec for it, and it works fine for me.

My doctor scheduled me for a gastroscope exam. I haven't had one for quite a while. The doctor who did the scope called me and my family doctor to say that I had changes seen in the biopsy he took. He says I have Barrett's esophagus, which can turn into cancer. Naturally, this has me worried.

Will you elaborate on Barrett's esophagus and what I have to look forward to? Neither of my doctors has suggested a change in medicines. Do you? -- T.M. ANSWER: Barrett's esophagus is a change in the kind of cells that line the lowermost part of

the esophagus, the part that attaches to the stomach. That change brings with it a chance of further, cancer changes.

The risk is quite small, about 0.5 percent per year.

Barrett's esophagus happens to people who have GERD, gastroesophageal reflux disease, more popularly called heartburn. You take a medicine, Prilosec, that suppresses the production of stomach acid. Medicines that act similarly sometimes can retard the progression of these cell changes into cancer cells. They most definitely control heartburn. Barrett's also can happen to

people who do not have GERD. The chance of cancer developing depends on a number of criteria. One is the kind of cells that have evolved. If they show low-grade changes, the likelihood of cancer is not as great as it would be if they show high-grade changes. The length of the area involved with these changes is another factor in determining the cancer risk.

You must not have had signs that raise the risk for cancer, or the doctor would have recommended immediate treatment.

About the only thing you need to do is comply with the suggested follow-up scope exams so the doctor can see if any procedures are needed to eradicate these new cells. You don't have to sit around and worry.

You have not received a death sentence.

was talking about pica.

It's a craving for materials not considered foods, like ice, clay, starch and dirt, to mention a few.

Sometimes it is an indication of iron deficiency, but far from always.

In someone like you, who has lab tests done twice a year, you're not anemic and don't have pica.

You do, however, have a habit that will ruin your teeth if you don't stop.

Chewing on ice can cause microscopic fractures in tooth enamel, which can become larger fractures.

DEAR DR. DONOHUE: As someone preparing for a liver biopsy, please discuss the procedure, recovery and possible side effects. -- R.J. ANSWER: Doctors perform a liver biopsy with a needle attached to a suction device that

can capture a thin piece of the organ for microscopic examination. The needle is inserted through the skin over the liver. First the doctor cleans the skin with an antiseptic and often numbs it. The procedure takes less than a minute.

You return home shortly thereafter.

Side effects are rare.

Bleeding is possible. So is infection. Neither happens frequently.

You don't have to prepare yourself in any special way.

"This Bugseum is one building that you literally 'Can't Miss!' It is bright yellow and green and covered in giant painted bugs," stated one comment on the Insect Lore Bugseum website. The pleased visitor continued, "The Bugseum was massively fun for the children that I was with.

They got to experience nature up-closeand-personal, seeing many bugs that they had never seen before. It turns out that the museum is only part of the experience, the place is actually a butterfly farm, and they built this museum only recently. This is well worth the detour off Hwy 99."

Can firearms be used to land halibut?

Question: I have a question about safely bringing large halibut onboard.

Because the Pacific halibut caught in Alaska are often over 100 pounds, deckhands use pistols or small shotguns to kill the fish before bringing them on board. This is to prevent the fish from causing damage or hurting anyone once on the deck. Would this method be legal to use in California ocean waters with large fish? Of course, the fish would already be "landed" by first being gaffed. Is it even legal to carry a pistol while fishing on a private boat near shore? (Timothy B., Morro Bay) Answer: Sport fisher-

men may take halibut by hand, hook and line, spear fishing, spear, harpoon or bow and arrow (California Code of Regulations Title 14, sections 28.65, 28.90 and 28.95.) Firearms are not a legal method of take for halibut, so a gun may not be used to assist in taking or landing the fish.

Distance from hoop nets allowed?

Question: How far can a fisherman be from his nets once the traps are in the water? 100 yards?

500 yards? (Dixon C.) Answer: There is no legal limit to the distance you can travel from hoop nets you have set in a recreational pursuit of lobster or crab. However, they must be checked - lifted to the surface - at least every two hours.

Transporting a whitetailed doe deer mount into California Question: I am looking to add a mounted whitetail doe head to the family cabin but want to be sure

before buying it. It was legally taken and mounted in another state. From what I hear, its really old. I dont believe they are native to California but I want to be sure its legal to do before purchasing and transporting it here. (Kristi D.) Answer: Yes, it is legal in California for you to purchase the taxidermied head of either sex of a white tail deer. California Fish and Game law (Fish and Game Code, section 3039) only prohibits buying or selling any species of bird or mammal that occurs in the wild in California. We have only mule deer and black tail deer here.

Any package in which birds, mammals, fish, reptiles, or amphibians, or parts thereof, are offered for transportation to, or are transported or received for transportation by, a common carrier or his or her agent shall bear the name and address of the shipper and of the consignee and an accurate description of the numbers and kinds of birds, mammals, fish, reptiles, or amphibians contained therein clearly and conspicuously marked on the outside thereof. Whats required to catch and breed tarantulas?

Question: I'm interested in catching some local tarantulas to try breeding them. I cant find anything obviously referring to either tarantulas or prohibitions on such things. Are there any licenses

required? Are there any definite prohibitions against it or any issues pertaining to the different public lands (e.g. city, county, state, federal)? (S. Godfrey) Answer: The Fish and Game Code and its implementing regulations currently do not prohibit the take of spiders, but federal laws may apply to the take or breeding of tarantulas.

You may want to consult the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service regarding federal prohibitions, and be aware that some public lands (e.g. state and national parks, scientific reserves, etc.) have laws that prohibit the taking of any live animals. You need to check with the jurisdiction of the land on which you want to hunt tarantulas.

"They can be tossed into salads or yogurt, marinated in teriyaki sauce and served with grilled meats, or turned into delicious snacks like these."

Not only do they taste good, they're good for you. Blueberries are good for your eyes and memory, and they have antioxidants, which may prevent some types of cancer. Strawberries have vitamin C and fiber, which is good for your digestive system and helps you feel full.

Strawberry-Yogurt Freezer Pops Yield: 10 servings • 1 pound Florida strawberries, hulled and chopped • 1/4 cup sugar • 1 lemon, juiced • 2 cups low-fat vanilla yogurt • 10 freezer pop molds and sticks In blender or food processor add half of the strawberries, sugar and lemon juice. Puree ingredients until sugar is dissolved. Pour mixture into a small pitcher or container and add the rest of the chopped strawberries. Fill each freezer pop mold by alternating layers of strawberry mixture and yogurt.

Insert handle or stick into each freezer pop and freeze at least 5 hours. To serve, run warm water over outside of molds until pops come out easily. If you don't have freezer pop molds, use small paper cups. Cover tops of cups with plastic wrap and poke the sticks through the plastic to keep them standing upright while in the freezer.

• 8 slices fresh bread (1/2 inch thick) • 1/2 cup mascarpone cheese • 1/2 pound Florida strawberries, hulled and sliced thin • Confectioners' sugar for dusting • 2 tablespoons unsalted butter, melted

• 1 cup pecans, chopped, divided • 3/4 cup whole-wheat flour • 3/4 cup all-purpose flour • 1/2 cup sugar • 1/2 teaspoon salt • 4 tablespoons cold unsalted butter, cut into small pieces • 1 large egg • 2 tablespoons canola oil • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract • 1/4 teaspoon almond extract • Pan release cooking spray

Fruit Filling:

Blueberry Biscuit Cookies Yield: 14 servings Grown-Up Alert: Supervise younger children when using the oven.

• 2 cups biscuit mix • 1 cup Florida blueberries • 1 cup pecans, chopped • 2 tablespoons low-fat milk • 1/2 cup honey, divided • Preheat oven to 350°F. In large mixing bowl, combine biscuit mix, blueberries, pecans and milk.

Mix well and add enough honey to make mixture stiff like cookie dough.

Place dough by tablespoonful onto a greased baking sheet about 2 inches apart. Bake until edges begin to brown, about 15 minutes. Remove from oven and drizzle remaining honey on each cookie. Bake an additional 5 minutes and serve immediately.

Heat a panini press or griddle over medium heat. Spread a thin layer of mascarpone on top of each bread slice.

Add an even layer of strawberries to 4 bread slices. Use the other 4 slices of bread to top the sandwiches. Brush sandwiches with butter and grill or press until golden, about 5 minutes.

Transfer panini to cutting board and dust with confectioners' sugar. Serve warm.

• 3 cups Florida strawberries, hulled and diced; divided • 2 1/2 cups Florida blueberries, divided • 1/4 cup orange juice • 1/2 cup sugar • 1/4 cup cornstarch • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract For crust: Combine 3/4 cup chopped pecans, both flours, sugar and salt in food processor. Pulse together until nuts are finely ground. Add cold butter to mixture and pulse until well incorporated. In small mixing bowl, whisk egg, oil, vanilla and almond extracts together. With motor running on food processor, add egg mixture to pecan mixture.

Continue to pulse until it begins to clump, 30 to 45 seconds.

Measure out 1/2 cup of mixture and combine in bowl with remaining 1/4 cup chopped pecans; set aside for topping. Preheat oven to 400°F. Coat 9by-13-inch baking dish with cooking spray.

Combine 2 cups strawberries, 2 cups blueberries, orange juice, sugar and cornstarch in large saucepan. Bring to a simmer over medium heat, stirring constantly, until mixture has thickened (about 4 to 5 minutes). Stir in remaining fresh fruit and add vanilla.

Transfer crust mixture to sprayed baking dish. Spread evenly and press firmly into bottom to form crust. Evenly spread fruit filling over crust. Sprinkle top of fruit filling with reserved topping mixture.

Bake bars for 15 minutes. Reduce oven temperature to 350°F and bake until crust and topping are lightly brown, 25 to 30 minutes more. Let bars cool completely before cutting. Serve with fresh fruit.

Maximize your disabled child’s government aid

Parents of special needs children have enough on their plates just tending to the health, educational and emotional needs of their kids – not to mention often having to cope with drastically lowered income because of reduced work hours or having to pay someone else for childcare.

So it's not surprising that many of these parents haven't had time to hatch a long-term financial plan in case their kids need care after they're not around.

Fortunately, many government programs and community resources are available to help relieve the financial burden of parenting special needs children.

But eligibility criteria are complicated and the application process time-consuming. Plus, if you're not careful, you or well-meaning relatives could inadvertently disqualify your kids for future benefits by not structuring their inheritances correctly.

Here's a brief overview of key government assistance programs: The Social Security

Administration provides two types of disability coverage: Supplemental Security Income (SSI) and Social Security Disability Income (SSDI). Rules and eligibility requirements differ between the two programs – and benefits differ for children and adults.

In a nutshell, SSI is a needs-based, cash-assistance program for disabled people of any age in lowincome families with limited resources. Children qualify for SSI benefits if they meet certain strict criteria outlined in SSA Publication 05-11000 (www.ssa.gov/pubs/11000 .html).

SSDI is a separate program funded by payroll deductions (part of FICA).

Although children sometimes receive SSDI payments if their parents are disabled, their eligibility is based on their parents' disability status, not on their own. However, after turning 22, already disabled children may qualify for SSDI on their own if at least one parent qualifies for Social Security benefits.

Eligibility rules and definitions for SSI and SSDI are

complex. To see if your child qualifies, call Social Security at 1-800-772-1213, or search the Disability and SSI tabs at www.ssa.gov.

One particularly helpful resource is "Benefits for Children with Disabilities," SSA Publication No. 0510026.

Many families inadvertently jeopardize their disabled child's eligibility for government-provided benefits by opening accounts in the child's name or designating them as beneficiaries. Unfortunately, federal law dictates that recipients of SSI, Medicaid and many state assistance programs will be disqualified if they have resources worth over $2,000. So, if Uncle Jerry leaves your daughter $10,000 in his will, she could lose her benefits.

One good alternative is to create a special needs trust, whose assets can be used by its trustee to manage the finances and personal effects of a disabled person. Trusts are governed by state laws and should only be drafted by an attorney familiar with this area of law.

Some parents name the trust as beneficiary of life insurance policies to ensure a source of funding if they die before their child. (Stay current on your premiums.) Other possible funding sources include cash, stocks and other investments, retirement plan death benefits, home sale proceeds and inheritances from other relatives and friends. Just make sure that the trust –not the child – is named beneficiary.

Preparing a special needs trust can be expensive – possibly several thousand dollars, depending on your situation. But weigh that against the prospect of your child losing out on a lifetime of government-provided benefits because of an accidental inheritance – speaking of which, be sure to let any well-meaning relatives or friends know about the trust.

Check plants regularly throughout the growing season. It is easier to control a few insects than the hundreds that can develop in a week or two. And when problems arise, look for the most eco-friendly control. Start by removing small infestations by hand. Consider traps, barriers, and natural products if further control is needed. And as always be sure to read and follow label directions carefully.

•Energy Wise Landscape Design Use landscape plantings to keep homes warmer in the winter and cooler in the summer. Homes will have a more comfortable temperature throughout the seasons and energy costs will be reduced.

Plant trees on the east and west side of a house to shade windows in the summer and let the sun shine in and warm it up through the south-facing windows in winter.

Shade air conditioners, so they run more efficiently and be sure to collect and use any water they produce

for container gardens.

Incorporate these changes into gardening routines and habits over time. Soon these and many more strategies that help save time and money while being kind to the environment will seem to occur automatically.

Pet vaccination and microchip clinic April 6

On Saturday, April 6, Have A Heart Humane Society and Kern County Animal Control are hosting a pet vaccination and microchip clinic at West Park Activity Center, 410 W. “D” St. The event hours are 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. No appointment is needed.

Dog DHPP and Cat FVRCP vaccinations are free. Microchipping for cats and dogs are also free, rabies vaccinations are $5, and dog licensing is $15 for altered dogs, more for unaltered dogs.

The event is being funded by dona-

tions made to Have A Heart Humane Society, whose goal it is to make Tehachapi a pet-friendly and pet-safe town. Kern County Animal Control is providing additional funding and support.

If your dog is current on its rabies vaccination and you wish to license it, you must bring proof of the rabies vaccination, which should be on file with your vet. Simply ask your vet to provide you with a rabies certification.

All dogs coming to this event should be securely leashed and not led by children. All cats should be in carriers or containers of some kind.
